Abstract:In order to meet the design need of focuses fragment warhead,the damaging evaluation of focuses fragment warhead against battleplane target is researched in this paper.Through analyses the vulnerability of the battleplane target,developing the target damage model,takes the damage probability of one missile as index,the evaluation model of the damage effect for focuses fragment against battleplane target warhead is established by Monte Carlo method.Through analyses the simulation result,the law that kill probability of one missile enhance with the increase of velocity of missile beyond target and the reduce of CEP and fuze startup time,this is consistent with theoretics.

Abstract:In order to scientifically evaluate the target damage effectiveness when warhead fragments formed by projectile explosion attack targets, this paper proposes a new method by using the multi-layer warhead fragments distribution division mechanism to study an evaluation and calculation model of target damage effectiveness under uncertain information of warhead fragments. On the basis of the spatial relationship between projectile explosion position and target, we first analyze the target damage rules based on the target's own vulnerability characteristics. Then we use the fuzzy prior probability theory to establish the membership function of the target damage factor and an evaluation model of the target damage grade, and use the stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis method to obtain the evaluation index value of the target damage level. Finally, considering the ratio between the effective area of the warhead fragment group attacking target and the area of target itself and the effective number and area ratio of warhead fragments penetrating target, we give a numerical calculation method of target damage effectiveness. Through simulation and calculation, the results show that when the distance between the projectile explosion position and the target is less than 7 m and the coordinate interval of the projectile flight direction is −2.5 m to 2.5 m, the damage probability of warhead fragments to the target is greater than 75%. When the weight of the damage factor of the target changes, the damage effectiveness of the target also changes, and this result is in accordance with the actual experiment, which verifies the rationality of the proposed mathematical model.

Abstract:The high impulsive overload when a projectile penetrates multilayered targets affects the performance of explosive charge, which is an important component of many weapons. A tensile stress wave is generated in the charge when the compressive stress wave is reflected from the free surface, which is the main reason of the damage occurrence. Here, the damage behavior of charge under the multiple high impulsive overloads is systematically studied by a strain-rate-dependent cohesive zone model. Therein, a critical δn (normal separation) is determined to describe the macrodamage evolution of charge by contrasting the predictions with the experimental results. Our numerical results show that the δn at the edge of charge is larger than that in the interior and that the angle between the macrodamage area and the transversal direction increases with the targets obliquity. It is found that the maximum δn and the macrodamage proportion during oblique penetration are larger than those during normal penetration. With the increase in the projectile velocity, the maximum δn and the total macrodamage proportion increase, and severe macrodamage area is closer to the tail. As the targets spacing expands, both the maximum δn and the total macrodamage proportion change non-monotonically, while the distance from the severe macrodamage area to the tail expands.
Numerical simulation of the disk fragment impacting resistance of plate target

Abstract:In order to investigate the ballistic resistance and failure pattern of the casing with the impact of disk fragment, and find out structure optimization method, the phenomena of 1/3 disk fragment impacting on single and double layers plate target were simulated using nonlinear dynamical analysis software Dytran. Johnson-Cook material model was introduced for the disk fragment and the plate target, along with Gruneisen equation of state. Based on Lagrange method, impaction was simulated using explicit finite element method. Simulation results show that the major failure patterns of the plate target include plastic deformation, shear and tensile fracture, and that the single-layer plate has greater resistance than any other double-layered plates. Conclusions are also made that the ballistic limit velocity increases with the distance when it is beyond a certain value, and that the greater resistance is obtained in low or high proportion of the first layer with a constant of the total thickness. So, the resistance of double-layered plate targets may exceed that of the single plate, by reasonably arranging the thickness and the standoff distance of two plates.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a constitutive model for predicting dynamic anisotropic damage and fragmentation of rock materials under blast loading. In order to take account of the anisotropy of damage, a second rank symmetric damage tensor is introduced in the present model. Based on the mechanics of microcrack nucleation, growth and coalescence, the evolution of damage is formulated. The model provides a quantitative method to estimate the fragment distribution and fragment size generated by crack coalescence in the dynamic fragmentation process. It takes account of the experimental facts that a brittle rock material does not fail if the applied stress is lower than its static strength and certain time duration is needed for fracture to take place when it is subjected to a stress higher than its static strength. Numerical results are compared with those from independent field tests.

Abstract:Quantification of the target damage under missile striking is not only a key issue in the field of damage, but also an important basis for the attack strategy evaluation. Based on Monte Carlo method, an improved quantitative method of building target probability damage is proposed in this study. By analyzing the relationship between landing points of the warhead and damage contour lines of the target, this method can quickly, accurately and reliably evaluate the percentage of damaged area Pd of the target under a warhead attack. Firstly, the method takes the percentage of damaged area Pd as a standard to measure the damage degree of the building target, and determines how the percentage of damaged area Pd is related to overpressure Ps and impulse i. Secondly, based on different target scales and the TNT equivalents of the missile warhead, the evaluated target is discretized and corresponding grid division criteria are formulated. Thirdly, building targets with different equivalent areas are taken as objects, and the percentage of the damaged area of each target under different landing points is calculated. Landing points with the same percentage of damaged area Pd are connected to obtain damage contour lines of respective targets. Finally, Monte Carlo method is used to simulate missile landing points, which are distributed in the form of a two-dimensional normal distribution, where the distribution center point is the ideal landing point. Combined with the damage contour line, the damage probability value under the arbitrary percentage of the damaged area of each target can be obtained.

Abstract:Damage assessment of a small-weight precision-guided warhead to evaluate the effect on the performance of high-value vulnerable targets should focus on functional damage instead of physical damage. Developing a damage assessment model that considers target function attenuation as a damage criterion for warhead design and tactical application is of great significance. In this paper, an accurate mathematical description of a preformed fragment warhead is provided. The failure of phased-array antenna elements in different initiation conditions is predicted by a shot-line model and spatial coordinate mapping. A real-time co-simulation model of the explosion damage field and the phased-array antenna electrical performance is developed and the effective damage modes are obtained through multi-condition simulation and electrical performance parameters analysis, which has more tactical application value than the structural damage assessment method with equivalent targets and the electrical simulation in artificial or random phrased-array-element failure conditions.

Abstract:To scientifically evaluate the damage effectiveness of a projectile explosion on the equivalent target, this article studies a warhead fragment distribution parameters’ measurement method based on a six-screen-sensors’ intersection test system; establishes a parameter calculation model of the warhead fragment hitting the equivalent target, the time and space constraints’ discriminant model of six infrared detection screens, and the time-value-matching model of multiple warhead fragments; and gives the calculation of the specific fragment distribution position and the time-matching algorithm of each infrared detection screen. According to the obtained warhead fragment parameters, a calculation method of the damage probability of equivalent target is constructed. Through experiments and analysis, it is verified that the established warhead fragment parameter measurement method and the damage probability model of the equivalent target are scientific.

Abstract:To improve the damage ability of the hollow-charge warhead, and the utilization of the dynamite, added the prefabricated fragments at the circumferential of the shaped warhead, used the finite element software to calculate the influence of different prefabricated fragments, different shell structure on warhead's EFP and fragments performance, and also the penetration capability of them. The results show that: the performance of the damage elements formed by this anti-armor composite warhead are very well, it can damage the armored vehicles, ships and other targets, the sphere fragment can penetrate 12mm thick armor steel in 60m, and damage personnel in the 240m, EFP can penetrate the armor steel more than 0.5 times of the charge's diameter, this research can provide reference for the further research on multi-using warhead.

Abstract:To address the difficulty in evaluating the damage effect of missile target attacked by fragmented warheads, this paper proposes a new damage assessment method. In this paper, the damage to the missile target is regarded as the result of the continuous action of multiple layers of warhead fragments at multiple times. Based on this damage mechanism, sample data is formed using the characteristic parameters of warhead fragments, by introducing intuitionistic fuzzy neural network (IFNN), a new missile target damage effect evaluation model based on IFNN is established. Finally, training and testing are conducted on the data of actual missile target intersection damage tests, and the results are compared with other target damage evaluation methods. The results show that this evaluation method can effectively obtain the damage value of the missile target, and the evaluation model has good generalization ability. This provides ideas for developing a new method to evaluate the static or dynamic damage effectiveness of intelligent ammunition.

Abstract:Damage enhanced materials were used to improve damage efficiency of fragments antiaircraft weapons.A kind of damage enhanced fragments(DEF)containing Al/PTFE with dimension of Φ10 mm×10 mm was designed and prepared.Damage performance experiments show that damage enhance fragments attack targets not only by kinetic energy,but also by combined damages such as exploding,overpressure,high temperature,and setting fire etc.The results show that the designed damage enhance fragments have remarkably higher damage performances than steel fragments with the same dimensions,and its potential chemical energy is 12.4 times as high as its kinetic energy.

Abstract:Aiming to address the issue of assessing the effectiveness of target damage in air defense interception under projectile and target intersection, this paper proposes a novel target damage effectiveness assessment mathematical calculation method using an adaptive fuzzy neural network. The design and calculation methods introduce the target cabin’s damage weight factor, the dispersion error and coverage density and fire density of warhead fragment, and the ratio of the number of warhead fragments to the cross-sectional area of the target as the primary damage factors, and we establish a new model for calculating the target damage efficiency using Takagi-Sugeno adaptive fuzzy neural network with the multiple damage factors. In the designed model, we take the characteristic parameters of warhead fragments formed by the projectile explosion as the sample data and learn the mapping relationship between damage factors and damage effect expressed by the system of fuzzy rule. Combined with the vulnerability weight and damage factors of the target, the fuzzy rule system is applied to predict and calculate the damage probability and damage effectiveness. In addition, we use shot-line technology to set up the intersection criterion between warhead fragments and target, analyze the coordinate relationship of the projectile explosion relative to the target based on the ground coordinate system, and derive the distribution density function of warhead fragment and research a calculation model for target damage probability with multiple vulnerable cabins. Finally, we use the established model to train, test, and calculate the data from the actual projectile and target intersection damage test and present the comparison results to other damage calculation methods. By calculation and comparative analysis, the results show the smaller the distance between projectile and target, as well as the smaller the average intersection angle, and the larger the weight coefficient of the warhead fragment covering the target cabin, the total target damage probability increases obviously. In the two experimental calculations, the target cabin with the largest weight coefficient was considered, and compared with the existing literature, the damage probability of the proposed calculation method was increased by 9.13% and 10.93%, respectively, and it is clear that the proposed target damage assessment method can effectively reflect the real target damage effectiveness in the state of projectile and target intersection.

Abstract:A strong shock-wave, produced by plate impact, explosive detonation or laser irradiation, can induce metal materials to melt. Reflection of the triangular pressure wave from the free surface generates a strong tensile stress in the liquid state, resulting in the creation of an expanding cloud of liquid debris. This phenomenon is called micro-spalling. The understanding of spall damage evolution and dynamic fragmentation of melted metal under shockwave loading and subsequent releasing is an issue of considerable importance for both basic and applied science, to predict the evolution of engineering structures subjected to explosive detonation in implosive dynamics or inertial confinement fusion, the latter involving high energy laser irradiation of thin metallic shells. For dynamic failure processes, spall fracture in solid material has been extensively studied for many years, while scarce data can be found about how such a phenomenon can evolve after being melted partially or fully when being compressed or released. In this paper, by studying the physical laws of void evolution in melted metals, we expect to reveal the mode and criterion of void coalescence, inertial and temperature effects on void distribution and evolution, and the relationship between fragment distribution and characteristics of breakup of damaged material. According to these physical laws, we can develop theoretical model to describe the damage evolution and fragment distribution of metal that melts when shock releases. This model is implemented as a failure criterion in a one-dimensional hydrocode. The experimental results and computational results are in fairly good agreement with each other. Some discrepancies are explained by using both experimental uncertainties and model limitations which are carefully pointed out and discussed. We believe that these results can deepen our physical understanding of the damage evolutions of metals and improve the credibility of numerical simulation on the damage and fragmentation of materials under implosive loading.

Abstract:This study established a typical tractor model and divided the vehicle model into five parts. At the same time, combined with the damage model of the fragment warhead, the probability of damage to various parts of the vehicle when the fragment warhead explodes at different positions was analyzed. Based on the constructed model, we randomly generate 1000 bomb landing points to obtain the number of bomb fragments hitting different parts of the vehicle. Then we analyze the vulnerable parts in each part of the vehicle, and provide corresponding repair methods and spare parts carrying capacity for the corresponding parts. It has certain reference significance for the battlefield support of vehicle.
Expansion And Fracture Of Fragmenting Warhead Shells Of Various Materials Under A Cl-20 Explosive Charge

Abstract:To study the effect of the warhead material characteristics upon warhead expansion and fracture and upon the formation of fragments under a high-power explosive charge, four different warhead materials; 30CrMnSiNi2A steel, 40CrMnSiB steel, 50SiMnVB steel and 82 steel; are examined. This paper builds a analytical modeling to theoretically analyze the expansion and fracture processes for the different material warheads. In addition, the AUTODYN-3D finite element software is used to numerically simulate the expansion and fracture processes of the four materials, and high-speed photography technology and a tinfoil target velocity test system are used to verify the simulation results. It is found that, for the "phi 62mm" aperture warhead under the explosive CL-20 charge, the expansion and fracture processes of the four materials all require similar to 60 mu s, and the shell expansion velocity in the whole process can be divided into three stages called libration, acceleration and stabilized. The initial velocities of the fragments along the warhead axis for the different warhead materials are consistent with each other, though the expansion velocity and the maximum initial velocity of the fragments are largest for the 30CrMnSiNi2A steel warhead. It is found that the warhead expansion velocity and the initial velocity of the fragments decrease gradually as the ultimate tensile strength of the warhead material decreases and as its dynamic fracture toughness increases. This study introduces the coefficient of radial warhead expansion and acquires the function for the distance of the radial warhead expansion over time, which is influenced by the warhead material characteristics. The results of this study will provide a reference for fragmenting warhead shell material selection and design.

Abstract:Dynamic spatial distribution and killing characteristics of warhead fragments are important topics in the field of weapon effectiveness and protection. However, there is little research on the fragment distribution formed by continuous dynamic attacks of multiple projectiles that explode above the ground. This study analyzes spatial distributions of warhead fragments using witness boards in a rectangular target test. The results show that the fragment distribution of multiple projectiles in continuous dynamic attacks demonstrates a spatial superposition characteristic. The superimposed distribution is the sum of the distributions of two independent fragment distributions. The distribution characteristics are consistent with fragment scattering behavior. Therefore, they can be used to analyze the killing effects of multiple projectiles conveniently. The effects of falling speed, falling angle, and explosion height on the damage range of fragments were explored by a fragment spatial distribution model obtained from experiments. Analysis indicates that the prefabricated fragment distribution conformed to a spatial superposition relationship under dynamic multiprojectile continuous attacks, and the superposition obeyed fragment scattering characteristics. As the projectile falling angle increased at the explosion center, or as the falling height decreased, the positive pressure duration increased gradually. The falling speed had the greatest impact on the specific impulse of overpressure. The falling angle had the greatest impact on the peak value of overpressure. Both the falling angle and the explosion height had the greatest impact on the positive pressure acting time.
Study on evaluation method for driving fragment ability of explosives

Abstract:The present study proposes an evaluation method for the driving fragment ability of explosives, which aims to provide theoretical and technical support for the selection of explosives used in warheads. The evaluation method is proposed in the light of the dimensional method and the similarity principle, and it uses TNT equivalent as the evaluation indicator. To acquire the evaluation indicator, a test system for driving fragment ability of explosives is constructed, which includes a dynamite gun type driven device, a spherical fragment, and a multi-zone fragment velocity measurement system. TNT and thermobaric explosive were used to carry out the verification experiments of the evaluation method. On the basis of the evaluation method, the basic evaluation model for the driving fragment ability of explosives was established by the TNT mass and the corresponding fragment maximum velocity. Using the basic evaluation model, the TNT equivalent of the thermobaric explosive in driving fragment ability was calculated to be 1.29, which was 3.2% different from the ratio (1.25) of both explosives' Gurney-specific energy. The relative error of 3.2% falls within the allowable range of engineering error, confirming the feasibility of the proposed evaluation method. The result shows that the proposed evaluation method is effective and accurate in evaluating the driving fragment ability of explosives.

Abstract:To solve the problem of the damage effect of static detonation test fragments on target, a photogrammetric technique is proposed to obtain the images of the equivalent target plate before and after the static detonation based on the static detonation test fragments acting on equivalent target plate. For the weak texture of the target plate and the difficulty to measure of the warhead detonation center, their shape feature is represented with single point mark, the salience regions are extracted and tracking matched for the sequence image, the image is absolute localized based on SFM and PnP, then the 3D point cloud of the detonation field shape is reconstructed based on the triangulation method. For the similar of the target plate, it is difficult to identify before and after detonation, the code mark is utilized for the equivalent target plate, the invariance of the cross ratio with the affine transformation is used to decode, and a back-projection localization model of the fragment perforation on the equivalent target plate after the static detonation was established. Finally, The fragment dispersion parameters are obtained, and a complete fragment measurement system is constructed. Through calculation and experimental analysis that the method has higher accuracy and automation for fragments dispersion parameters calculation. Meantime, it is not sensitive to the target plate color and layout, and suitable for complex environments of static detonation test, which can provide accurate and complete data support for the development, improvement and product identification of high-energy and high-efficiency munitions, and provide fragments spatial distribution for the precision strike of new weapons and equipment, therefore, it is beneficial for evaluating the performance parameters of the warhead and target damage efficiency.

Effect Of Warhead Shell Thickness On Fragments' Formation And Penetration Performance

Abstract:To analyze fragments formation situations of warhead shells different in thickness under high power explosive charge, this paper made numerical simulation of the effect of warhead shell thickness on fragments formation by the application of fragmentation warhead design software and AUTODYN-3D finite element software and did research on fragments' mass distribution, maximum initial velocity and penetration ability in real detonation environment by experiments. With the increase of warhead shell thickness, the total quantity of 50SiMnVB steel shell forming fragments decreases under high power explosive charge while the quantity of significant fragments whose mass over 1g increases. The change laws of initial velocity along warhead axis of different thickness shells forming fragments are accordant that the minimum initial velocity appears where approaching the initiation point and the maximum initial velocity appears where about 60% cylinder length away from the initiation point. Fragments' maximum initial velocity and shell thickness are negatively correlated. With the warhead shell thickness increasing from 5mm to 8mm, fragments' total number decreases by 39.1% and the significant fragments' quantity increases by 25.5%. Fragments' maximum initial velocity decreases by 27.9%. The quantity of fragments hitting target in per unit area decreases by 36.6% while its penetration probability increases obviously, reaching to 46.2%. In other words, the fragments' penetration ability is enhanced significantly.
