Abstract:Objective To explore the effect of cesarean-section and natural delivery on children's mental development. Methods 381 normal children who have taken part in the program of early education tracking during January 2005 and June 2006 in our hospital, were selected as subjects. Of these children, 218 cases were naturally delivered, and 163 cases were delivered by cesarean-section. The children's developmental quotient(DQ) were evaluated by the neuropsychological development inventory for children aged 0~4 years-old. Results No significant diference was found between two groups in the total DQ or the single DQ of fine movement, adaptability, language or social behavior. The DQ of the gross movement was significantly higher in the natural delivery group (101.4±18.4) than in cesarean-section group(96.9±20.8). Conclusion The cesarean-section was not superior to natural delivery for children's mental development and the gross movement. It is necessary to cautiously choose delivery methods and carry out early intervention of the movement development for infants delivered by cesarean-section.
