Abstract:A typical wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of sensor nodes, and is envisioned to support a wide range of applications. As most sensor nodes are operating unattended for a long lifetime, the need for robust software is very important for networked sensor systems. Simulation of networked sensor systems should be an important phase in application development. In this paper, we provide a detailed technical review of sensor network simulators. We not only list existing sensor simulators in the literature, but also summarize each simulator's advantages and disadvantages. Hence, simulator users can benefit from this summarization. We provide a taxonomy of various simulators based on the simulator architecture, the simulated CPU model, radio model, and sensor model. We point out some challenges of sensor network simulation, and summarize some recent techniques to address these challenges. Simulator developers can benefit from these descriptions. Finally, we further highlight some guidelines from both simulator users' perspective and simulator developers' perspective, and give case studies on how to select a simulator.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the simulation of Finite State mobile agent, which regards the migration, execution, and searching of the mobile agents as finite states. As the finite state mobile agents are deployed under the virtual organization platform, the corresponding search algorithm in virtual organization is also introduced. The experiments results based on the finite mobile agent’s evaluation model show the finite mobile agents can achieve satisfied performance.
Scalable and Interactive Simulation for IoT Applications with TinySim.

Abstract:Recent years, the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and applications have been witnessed. Three important features are characterized in modern IoT applications: 1) device heterogeneity; 2) long-range communication; and 3) cloud/edge-device integration. Difficulties are raised by the above features toward IoT application developers, e.g., predicting and evaluating the performance of the entire IoT application system. To deal with the above difficulties, we design and implement an IoT simulator, TinySim, which satisfies the requirements of high fidelity, high scalability, and seamless transplantation. TinySim takes advantage of the hardware-independent features of TinyLink programming language. Hence, a similar code can be used for both simulation and execution on real hardware platforms. Many virtual IoT devices can be simulated by TinySim at the PC end. These IoT devices can send or receive messages from the cloud or smartphones, making it possible for the developers to evaluate the entire system without the actual IoT hardware. We connect TinySim with Unity 3-D to provide high interactivity. To reduce the event synchronization overhead between TinySim and Unity 3-D, a dependence graph-based approach is proposed. We design an approximation-based approach to reduce the number of simulation events, greatly speeding up the simulation process. We carefully evaluate TinySim using benchmarks and two concrete case studies. TinySim can simulate representative IoT applications, such as smart flowerspot and shared bikes. We conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of TinySim. Results show that TinySim can achieve high accuracy with an error ratio lower than 9.52% in terms of energy and latency. Further, TinySim can simulate 4000 devices within 11.2 physical-minutes for ten simulation-minutes, which is about $3\times $ faster than the state-of-art approach.
FastSim: A Modular and Plug-and-Play Simulator for Aerial Robots

Abstract:State-of-the-art robotics simulators are equipped with well-established mapping, planning, and control systems. However, they lack modularity and the convenience of plug-and-play functionality. In this work, we present FastSim, a high-fidelity and user-friendly simulation framework based on the Unity engine. FastSim enables users to build robot simulation scenarios efficiently, by decoupling various simulation tasks with customizable modules, which contains simulated sensors, integrated utilities, visualization tools, and template robots. Besides high-performance robot dynamics simulation and high-quality image rendering, hardware-in-the-loop and mixed-reality applications are also available in this framework. The distinguished merits of FastSim include: (1) Robot Operating System (ROS) compatible control interfaces and abundant visualization tools for researchers who prefer ROS-based toolchains and (2) its integration of state-of-the-art planning algorithms, which enables users, even beginners, to quickly master the deployment of highly autonomous robots in simulations. Finally, we demonstrate the flexibility of FastSim by several experiments and performance evaluations with open source examples in repository: https://github.com/ZJU-FAST-Lab/FastSim .

Abstract:Flight simulator is important aviation experiment equipment using simulation technology to develop/test different airplane systems and train pilots. With the development of computer science and modeling technology, new more powerful computers and application software have made it possible to built more and more advanced simulators which allows more complicated and high efficiency simulation. While modern flight simulator is a complex system in existence including software and hardware, with the improvement of fidelity request, real-time constraints and other quality attribution of software system must be guaranteed. In order to fulfill the requirements of extendibility, reusability, compatibility and maintainability for flight simulator, according to the components of flight simulator, software architecture decomposition modules and hardware architecture were given, object-oriented technology and rapid control prototyping technology were used to develop flight simulator system. Result shows that the developed system fulfilled above-mentioned requirement. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Simulators play a crucial role in autonomous driving, offering significant time, cost, and labor savings. Over the past few years, the number of simulators for autonomous driving has grown substantially. However, there is a growing concern about the validity of algorithms developed and evaluated in simulators, indicating a need for a thorough analysis of the development status of the simulators. To bridge the gap in research, this paper analyzes the evolution of simulators and explains how the functionalities and utilities have developed. Then, the existing simulators are categorized based on their task applicability, providing researchers with a taxonomy to swiftly assess a simulator's suitability for specific tasks. Recommendations for select simulators are presented, considering factors such as accessibility, maintenance status, and quality. Recognizing potential hazards in simulators that could impact the confidence of simulation experiments, the paper dedicates substantial effort to identifying and justifying critical issues in actively maintained open-source simulators. Moreover, the paper reviews potential solutions to address these issues, serving as a guide for enhancing the credibility of simulators.

Abstract:Simulation technology is a comprehensive method for predicting possible outcomes or evaluating decision-making effects by establishing computer models of complex systems and simulating their behavior and evolution processes. This paper systematically reviews the development history, main methods, application fields, challenges, and future trends of simulation technology. Firstly, the article defines the connotation of simulation technology and expounds its important value in military, business, public policy, and other fields. Secondly, the article traces the development of simulation technology from its origins in World War II to the present, summarizing key milestones such as modeling languages, graphical interfaces, distributed interaction, and cloud computing. Thirdly, the article introduces the main modeling paradigms, such as system dynamics, discrete events, and agents, as well as compound modeling methods like continuous-discrete hybrid and multi-agent-macro hybrid. Meanwhile, the article also demonstrates typical applications of simulation in defense, business, government, engineering, healthcare, and other fields, using case studies in military operations, consumer markets, macroeconomics, traffic management, and disease spread. Based on an analysis of existing technical challenges, practical dilemmas, and methodological controversies, the article finally outlines the development prospects of simulation technology in the directions of large-scale high-performance computing, data-driven modeling, human-computer hybrid, cognitive-behavioral simulation, and cross-domain coupling. The article points out that simulation is accelerating its integration with artificial intelligence, big data, digital twins, and other technologies, evolving towards more intelligent, real-time, and immersive directions, and will become an indispensable enabling technology in the digital era. Strengthening theoretical innovation and application expansion of simulation is of great significance for enhancing national scientific and technological strength and comprehensive competitiveness.

Complex System Modeling and Simulation

Abstract:The research on complex systems is different from that on general systems because the former must consider self-organization, emergence, uncertainty, predetermination, and evolution. As an important method to transform the world, a simulation is one of the most important skills to discover complex systems. In this study, we provide a survey on complex systems and their simulation methods. Initially, the development history of complex system research is summarized from two main lines. Then, the eight common characteristics of the most complex systems are presented. Furthermore, the simulation methods of complex systems are introduced in detail from four aspects, namely, meta-synthesis methods, complex networks, intelligent technologies, and other methods. From the overall point of view, intelligent technologies are the driving force, and complex networks are the advanced structure. Meta-synthesis methods are the integration strategy, and other methods are the supplements. In addition, we show three complex system simulation examples: digital reactor simulation, simulation of a logistics system in the industrial site, and crowd evacuation simulation. The examples show that a simulation is a useful means and an important method in complex system research. Finally, the future development prospects for complex systems and their simulation methods are suggested.

Abstract:A novel realistic simulation framework (R-simulator) is developed based on OMNeT++ in the paper. R-Simulator has realistic GUI and strong Â¿messageÂ¿ management while considers the mobility of node and protocol stack. RSimulator is also time-saving and memory-efficient. The design of R-Simulator and its advantage are described in detail. Finally, an example is given to show its favorable performance.

Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory

Abstract:In computer architecture studies, simulators are crucial for design verification, reducing research and development time and ensuring the high accuracy of verification results. Several studies have developed and employed a verification environment by designing a custom in-house simulator that verifies the performance improvement of the proposed architecture for each research purpose by integrating multiple simulators or modifying existing ones. Recent advancements in deep neural networks and increased computational complexity have prompted research into emerging technologies, such as GPUs, processing-in-memory (PIM), and neural processing units (NPUs). Recently, custom in-house simulators were developed and actively employed for performance verification. However, constructing proper custom in-house simulators requires a greater grasp of the support functions and characteristics of current architectural simulators, which constitute the backbone of simulator creation. To meet these criteria, a comprehensive comparative analysis was conducted by examining the structures and output metrics supported across various architecture simulators, including representative CPU and memory simulators. Furthermore, it analyzes actual case studies of in-house simulators developed in recent emerging technology research ( i.e. , GPUs, NPUs, PIM). Additionally, we examine the characteristics of compilers that support optimization for various recent workloads and simulators by analyzing case studies in which the integration of simulators and compilers has contributed to optimizing the overall simulator operations. Analyzing the overall verification process using these simulators, comparing each component, and confirming actual cases can provide essential insights for selecting and developing simulators suitable for computer architecture research. Consequently, this study contributes to maximizing the accuracy and efficiency of computer architecture research.

An Optimized Distributed Real-Time Simulation Framework for High Fidelity Flight Simulator Research

Abstract:Flight simulator is among the most sophisticated software systems in existence. It is highly distributed, has rigorous timing requirements, and must be amenable to frequent updates to maintain high fidelity with the ever-changing vehicle and environment it is simulating. We proposed an optimized distributed real-time simulation framework to facilitate the high fidelity flight simulator research. It uses mediator and data bus design patterns to improve software quality and decrease communication delay. The mediator design pattern uses mediator as an information "broker" between components of a sub-system which minimizes component interdependencies, improves the extendibility for the simulator and makes the maintenance easier. Meanwhile, the data bus design pattern employs publish/subscribe communication paradigm and distributed database to facilitate data share among sub-systems which decreases the communication latency. The real-time execution components in the framework are also described in this paper. The validation methods and contrasting simulation results are presented finally to show the feasible design to carry out flight simulation with high quality and low communication latency.

Abstract:For power system simulation, the contradiction between the computational efficiency and the system scale as well as the detailed modeling comes into being. The electromagnetic / electromechanical hybrid simulation technology has been thereupon proposed. In this paper, a novel real-time hybrid simulator, which is based on two personal computers (PCs) and an analog communication device for data exchange between two PCs, is designed and built, and the key techniques are studied. For the unsolved essential difficulties in hybrid simulation technology, this paper initially studies the forecasting and correction method. The case studies not only indicate that the hybrid simulator is a success, but also testify to the practicability and necessity of the forecasting and correction method. All the achievements have paved the way for the forthcoming studies on the original hybrid simulator based on digital computers and real-time digital simulator (RTDS).

Abstract:SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. In recent years, the number of invested resources adopted in experiments of embedded applications dropped significantly as many simulation technologies are widely used. However, the efficiency of simulations is seriously influenced by some expensive and difficult-to-obtain devices. It is urgent and of great significance to build a universal simulation platform for embedded applications on general-purpose operating systems with an objective of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of system development and implementation. Since virtualization technology can greatly enhance the simulation efficiency by providing virtual models to simulate the behaviors of real devices, this paper designs and realizes a real-time simulation platform on general-purpose operating systems with the virtualization technology such that embedded applications would be correctly and efficiently debugged and tested on the general-purpose operating systems. The proposed simulation platform contains four layers named hardware resource, virtualization, virtual runtime environment, and interface adaptation, allowing dynamic debugging and testing of embedded applications without requiring the actual presence of real devices. Experiments are conducted to verify the functionalities of the proposed simulation platform, and results demonstrate that the proposed simulation platform can meet the real-time and high reliability requirements of embedded applications.

Abstract:Driving simulators are largely employed in automotive industry, government, military and academic research fields. This paper provides an overview of the development of a kind of special amphibious vehicle driving simulator. A modularization structure was developed according to the structure character, maintainability and fixing space requirement which provide a kind of convenient methods to replace failure device and cut down simulator maintenance cycle effectively. A mixed network structure based on PC was developed which was used to change information between computers and simulated cabin device. A special amphibious vehicle dynamics simulation model was proposed for use on the driving simulator adopting Commercial-of-The-Shelf (COTS) product Matlab/Simulink and Rapid Control Prototype (RCP) technology. The experiment results shows that the amphibious vehicle driving simulator can provide the near same performance as the actual vehicle and improve the driver's operation skill effectively.

Abstract:The future robots are expected to work in a shared physical space with humans [1], however, the presence of humans leads to a dynamic environment that is challenging for mobile robots to navigate. The path planning algorithms designed to navigate a collision free path in complex human environments are often tested in real environments due to the lack of simulation frameworks. This paper identifies key requirements for an ideal simulator for this task, evaluates existing simulation frameworks and most importantly, it identifies the challenges and limitations of the existing simulation techniques. First and foremost, we recognize that the simulators needed for the purpose of testing mobile robots designed for human environments are unique as they must model realistic pedestrian behavior in addition to the modelling of mobile robots. Our study finds that Pedsim_ros [2] and a more recent SocNavBench framework [3] are the only two 3D simulation frameworks that meet most of the key requirements defined in our paper. In summary, we identify the need for developing more simulators that offer an ability to create realistic 3D pedestrian rich virtual environments along with the flexibility of designing complex robots and their sensor models from scratch.

Abstract:Flight simulator is among the most sophisticated software systems in existence. It is highly distributed, has rigorous timing requirements, and must be amenable to frequent updates to maintain high fidelity with the ever- changing vehicle and environment it is simulating. Current flight simulation framework and software developing pattern are complicated to use and time consuming. We have accomplished a flight simulator prototype system based on a new distributed real-time simulation framework and non-flight-certified Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions and have proved its fidelity and coordination characters as a flight training device. The distributed real- time simulation framework uses mediator design pattern as an information broker among flight simulation models of a sub-system which minimizes model interdependencies, improves the extendibility for the simulator and makes the maintenance easier. Meanwhile, the simulation models and executable code in the simulator were generated through COTS software and run on a PC cluster by which the difficulties of programming tasks are descend. The simulation modeling process and virtual prototype of the motion system are also expatiated. The validation methods and contrasting simulation results are presented finally to show the feasible design to carry out flight simulation with high quality.

Abstract:Utilizing virtual reality technology for 3D modeling of experimental equipment, this study achieved digital simulation of the signal transmission process and developed a multi-user collaborative, immersive virtual simulation system for communication principles using the Unity 3D rendering engine. This system allows multiple students enter the same virtual space simultaneously via the network to collaboratively manipulate 3D virtual instruments and complete communication experiments such as modulation and demodulation of AM signal. The underlying information exchange architecture employs the MySQL database to store user data, uses C# for networking servers, and establishes a data exchange protocol with Socket, creating a decoupled foundation network that allows real-time data reading and exchange from multiple clients to meet the requirements of online collaboration. This approach addresses the issues of insufficient space and equipment resources in conventional laboratories, alongside overcoming the limitations on students' practice time and space, and streamlines the evaluation process in experimental education.
