Abstract:Abstrcat In this paper, the chemically reacting flow-field induced by detonation waves propagation is simulated with CFD methods. The dispersion-controlled dissipative scheme (DCD) is adopted to solve two-dimensional Euler equations implemented with detailed chemical reaction kinetics of hydrogen-oxygen-argon mixture. The fractional step method is applied to treat the stiff problem. For validation and verification, computational results are compared with experimental schlieren and nice agreement is obtained. The triple-point trajectories and the critical wedge angle α_(cr) are measured experimentally, analytically and numerically. From numerical results it is observed that the critical wedge angle α_(cr) for the transition from Mach reflection to regular reflection is very close to the experimental data. The numerical results also show that the angle (χ) of triple-point trajectory mainly depends on wedge angle (α) and is not sensitive to variation of the initial pressure P_0. In addition, the detailed cellular structures are also simulated to demonstrate the evolution of multi-wave front structure of a detonation wave and the mechanism of the formation of triple-point when a detonation front reflects over a wedge.
Numerical Simulation for Combustion of Droplet with Volume of Fluid Formulation

Abstract:Understanding the combustion process of a single droplet is helpful to improve the design for internal combustion engine.The volume of fluid(VOF)formulation is applied to model the combustion process of an n-decane droplet in room and high temperature(300 K,633 K,and 1000 K)convective air streams.The flow fields for both phases are obtained with the axisymmetrical model.The chemical reaction is modeled with the one-step finite-rate mechanism and the physical properties of gas mixture are species and temperature dependent except for surface tension.A mass transfer model applicable to the VOF calculations due to vaporization of the liquid phase is developed in consideration with the fluctuation of the liquid surface.The model is validated by checking the burning rate constants,which accord well with the experimental data in literature.The Stefan flow is also clearly captured by the calculations.The results verify the feasibility of the VOF CFD formulation as well as the mass transfer model due to vaporization.

Abstract:In the spray combustion process, the distribution of droplet size and velocity will affect the atomization performance of the fuel and the combustion effect. Compared with binary equal-sized droplet collisions, binary unequal-sized droplet collisions are more in line with the actual situation. In this paper, a numerical investigation of binary unequal-sized droplet collision has been performed under different high Weber numbers (from 210 to 810) and impact parameters (B ≈ 0.3–0.9) by a coupled level-set and volume of fluid method with adaptive mesh refinement technology. Unlike the coalescence and separation phenomena at low and medium Weber numbers, at high Weber numbers, due to the difference in velocity between large and small droplets, the rim expands radially outward in different ways and further breaks up. The splashing behavior of the droplets can also be observed. As the Weber number increases, the breakup moment of the droplets advances and the maximum radial deformation diameter increases first (We = 210–360) and then decreases (We = 360–810). By changing the impact parameters, it can be found that binary off-center collisions are associated with rotational motion. At larger impact parameters, the features of the capillary wave instability can be observed on the surface of the ligament.

Abstract:A new structure of solution elements and conservation elements based on rectangular mesh was proposed and an improved space-time conservation element and solution element (CE/SE) scheme with second-order accuracy was constructed. Furthermore, the application of improved CE/SE scheme was extended to detonation simulation. Three models were used for chemical reaction in gaseous detonation. And a two-fluid model was used for two-phase (gas–droplet) detonation. Shock reflections were simulated by the improved CE/SE scheme and the numerical results were compared with those obtained by other different numerical schemes. Gaseous and gas–droplet planar detonations were simulated and the numerical results were carefully compared with the experimental data and theoretical results based on C–J theory. Mach reflection of a cellular detonation was also simulated, and the numerical cellular patterns were compared with experimental ones. Comparisons show that the improved CE/SE scheme is clear in physical concept, easy to be implemented and high accurate for above-mentioned problems.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, an Eulerian–Lagrangian two-phase flow model for liquid-fueled detonations is constructed. The gaseous mixture is described by an Eulerian method, and liquid particles in gaseous mixture are traced by a Lagrangian method. An improved space-time conservation element and solution element (CE/SE) scheme is applied to the simulations of detonations in liquid C10H22-O2/air systems. Different fuel droplet sizes and equivalence ratios are considered in the present study. Interestingly, the numerical results show that liquid-fueled detonations have some difference with gaseous detonations. Especially, a deficit in the propagation velocity compared to the gaseous detonation velocity is observed in mixtures with lean fuel and larger droplet sizes, while an increase in the propagation velocity compared to the gaseous detonation velocity is observed in the mixtures with very rich fuel. The surprising phenomenon is analyzed and discussed with the aid of detailed numerical results. In addition, the formation and propagation of two-phase detonation waves are characterized by series of results and the influence of particle radii is also discussed. All numerical results show that the present model can describe the gas-particle two-phase system accurately, and can be applied to numerical simulations of liquid-fueled detonations.
Numerical Study of Gaseous Detonation Propagation Through a Bifurcated Tube

Abstract:Gaseous detonation propagation through a bifurcated tube was numerically investigated.A 2~(nd) additive semi-implicit Runge-Kutta method and a 5~(th) order WENO scheme were used to solve two-dimensional reactive Euler equations.A detailed chemical reaction model was utilized to describe the heat release of detonation.The contours of density,pressure,temperature,species OH mass fraction,the computed cellular pattern and the traveling speed of detonation were obtained.The results show that,influenced by the rarefaction waves from the left sharp corner,the reaction zone is separated from the leading shock.Then,the detonation is degenerated into the deflagration.The winkled reaction front can be clearly identified in numerical schlieren and temperature contours.Re-initiation is induced by the leading shock reflection on the right wall in the vertical branch.Mach reflection of disturbed detonation occurs in both vertical and horizontal branches.The boundary between regions of uniform and larger cells is not a straight line;it doesn't exactly start at the left sharp corner and is usually upstream of the left sharp corner.The triple-point trajectory characterizing Mach reflection locates downstream of the right corner in the horizontal branch.Complex structures of vortices,the unreacted region,and shock-vortex interaction are observed in flow field around the left corner.Vortices accelerate reaction rates of the unreacted region.The reflected shock interacts with vortices and breaks them into pieces.Reflected shock also accelerates the consumption of the unreacted region and then an embedded jet is produced.The evolution of detonation wave and computed cellular pattern are qualitatively consistent with those from experiments.
Numerical study on re-initiation phenomenon of gaseous detonation induced by the coalescence of high temperature regions

Abstract:The re-initiation phenomenon of gaseous detonation in a heart-shape tube was numerically studied. The 2nd additive semi-implicit Runge-Kutta method and 5th order WENO scheme were used to solve two-dimensional reactive Euler equations. Detailed chemical reaction model was utilized to describe the heat release of detonation. The results show that, when gaseous detonation propagates in a heart-shape tube, influenced by the wall geometry, detonation fails and then re-initiates. Detonation re-initiation is induced by the coalescence of high temperature regions twice at the different place in the tube. Some complicated phenomena such as the formation of unreacted gas pockets and jets, Mach reflection, shock-flame interaction and the resultant flame instabilities exist in the current detonation flow field. The computed evolution of cellular pattern in the process of detonation re-initiation is qualitatively consistent with that from the experiments.

Abstract:The complex dynamics of two flow problems of vapor explosion bubbles near a free surface and between two parallel plates are simulated by a compressible three-phase flow code. Firstly, a coupled high-order monotonicity-preserving (MP) interface capturing scheme is developed for the numerical computation of compressible three-phase flows, which is followed by validation with previous numerical and experimental data. Phase changes are taken into consideration and the empirical condensation coefficient is calibrated with the experimental data. For both two flow problems, good agreement between the numerical results and reference data is obtained. Most physical phenomena, including the free surface spike, the liquid jet before the impact and the complex interface deformations during multiple expanding and collapsing oscillations, are reasonably well reproduced. Afterwards, the effects of the initial vapor pressure and the non-condensable gas volume fraction in the surrounding water on the behavior of vapor bubbles are analyzed and discussed. It is found that both the initial vapor pressure and the non-condensable gas volume fraction have a substantial influence on the behavior of the bubble. Higher initial vapor pressure does indeed tend to result in larger bubbles. The presence of non-condensable gases tends to hinder the transfer of heat, slowing down condensation and potentially resulting in larger bubbles. When the initial vapor pressure is in the range of 10 to 20 atmospheres and the gas volume fraction is in the range of 0 to 0.2, the maximum vapor bubble volume is found to increase linearly with an increase of the amount of non-condensable gas.

Abstract:We extend GFM method to capture the interface.Besides,Eulerian equations are discretized by upwind TVD scheme to describe flow field,and level-set equations by 5th order WENO scheme to obtain the evolution of interface.The phenomenon of collapsing between underwater shock and bubbles and the expansion of two V-shapes high-pressurized gas bubbles underwater are simulated.The results demonstrate application of GFM is capable of capturing interfaces with high ratios of pressure and density underwater.

Abstract:The level set method, TVD scheme of second order upwind procedure coupled with flux limiter, ENO velocity extension procedure inside the bubble, and MAC projection algorithm were incorporated to simulate the whole collapse evolution of a cavitation bubble near a rigid wall with many complicated phenomena. such as topology distortion and shrinking, jet impact. bubble breaking into a toroidal form. and diminishing volume to zero, etc. The bubble shape, evolution and distribution of velocity and pressure fields of the fluid during the bubble collapsing were investigated. It is found that the method is numerically stable and has good convergence property. and the results are in good agreements with those in previous work.
Experiment and numerical simulation for liquid dispersion drived by explosion

Abstract:In the process of liquid dispersion drived by explosion, the liquid characteristics and dispersion feature may be directly affected by the propagation of explosion shock wave in liquid and the interaction in the gas-liquid interface. The process of liquid dispersion was tested by the method of exploding the detonating cord under water. The experimented results show that the liquid characteristics change and the cavitation phenomenal occurs near the interface. The interaction between the powerful shock wave and gas-liquid interface is simulated numerically by using level-set and GFM. The simulated results, such as the pressure distribution and interface shape, indicate also that the cavitation phenomenon occurs.

Abstract:The shock waves and high-speed jets induced by the violent collapse of bubbles can cause serious damage to nearby structures. To fully understand the shock wave and jet characteristics induced by bubble-bubble interaction, we developed a diffuse-interface method for the simulation of compressible two-phase flow, which combined interface compression technique with interface sharpening technique to keep the sharpness of the shock wave and phase interface. The thermodynamically consistent five-equation model was improved using interface compression technique to maintain a constant thickness of the phase interface. To further suppress numerical dissipation, the high-order scheme WENO (Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory) and interface sharpening function THINC (Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface Capturing) were used for the flux reconstruction at the grid boundary to ensure that the total variation at the cell boundary was minimized (Boundary Variation Diminishing, BVD), thus the spatial reconstruction scheme, named WENO-THINC-BVD, was developed. Moreover, we extended the present method to a block-structured adaptive mesh refinement framework to improve grid resolution and save computing resources. Numerical results of several benchmark tests fully demonstrated the advantages of the present method in simulating complex compressible flows containing shock-shock and shock-interface interactions. Based on the present high-fidelity numerical methods, we investigated the shock wave and liquid jet induced by the two-bubble interaction in an open space. A phase diagram of the liquid jet propagation direction as a function of the initial bubble pressure and the inter-bubble distance was summarized. Finally, according to the bubble-bubble interaction process, an empirical formula for the collapse strength and another for the attenuation of shock waves were developed.
Numerical simulation of explosive dispersal of liquids in far-field period

Abstract:The process of explosive dispersal on liquids has been numerically simulated. The turbulent motion of fluid phase is represented with k-ε two equations model in Euler coordinate system and computed by Mac Cormack differential scheme. The motion of particle phase is represented with particle stochastic trajectory in Lagrange coordinate system. The behavior of drops are calculated with breakup, coalescence, and evaporation models. The simulated results predict that the refluence of fluid influences the cloud size obviously, the velocity of cloud expansion in early time is faster than the velocity in last time, and then a flat cloud is formed ultimately. In the formed cloud, the diameters which 90 percent of particles have are less than 100 μm, and the diameters which 70 percent of particles have are less than 50 μm. In general, the big particles are dispersed to the cloud fringe, and the small particles are dispersed in the cloud interior. The breakup phenomenon is dominating mechanism during the evaluation of cloud particles diameter distribution.

Abstract:Gaseous detonation propagation through a semi-circle bend tube was experimentally and numerically investigated. The laser schlieren system was employed to obtain the images of detonation front at the different position. The 2nd additive semi-implicit Runge-Kutta method and 5th order WENO scheme were respectively used to discretize the time and space terms of reactive Euler equations. Detailed chemical reaction model was utilized to describe the processes of detonation chemical reactions. The contours of pressure, temperature, OH mass fraction, numerical cellular pattern and average detonation speed were obtained. Experimental and numerical results show that, influenced by the rarefaction waves and compression waves, the detonation front is distorted. Due to the shallow curvature of the bend tube, the detonation front is not so seriously distorted and there is no evidence of detonation failure. The leading shock along the concave wall is much stronger than that along the convex wall. The reaction zone along the convex wall is also wider than that along the concave wall. The triple-point number decreases in the process of detonation propagation through the bend tube, and therefore the detonation wave is degenerated. However, it can be recuperated to self-sustaining cellular detonation at the exit section. The computed detonation flow field, cellular pattern and average speed are qualitatively consistent with those from the experiments.

Abstract:A Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) scheme for solving the temporal-spatial multiscale problem of sympathetic detonation is proposed. According to the physical and chemical properties, the SD process is divided into two stages in the numerical simulation. Two different grid sizes are used in the two stages to improve calculation accuracy and efficiency. The local Level Set Method is used to accurately track the multi-material interface, and the Harten Lax and van Leer Contact (HLLC) method is used to solve local Riemann problem. Based on the computing method mentioned above, choosing the high evolution Weighted Essentially Non-Oscillatory (WENO) scheme for the spatial discretization of governing equations in alliance with Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) Runge-Kutta for time discretization, the Eulerian code of SD is developed. It solves the data interaction between the two solvers with variable grid size and time step, and realizes the three-dimensional parallel computing of SD. Composition B is taken as the research object. The processes of SD in different stand-off distances are analyzed. The transmission and safety distances of Composition B are given. The test under the same conditions is designed to verify the numerical simulation. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment, which proves the accuracy and feasibility of the numerical method.

Numerical Simulations of Droplet Impact Onto a Pool Surface

Abstract:Multi-scale flow structures can be observed in the process of droplet impact on a deep pool, such as central jet, splash, micro-droplets. We have performed 3-D direct numerical simulation of this problem. By using block-based adaptive mesh refinement (BAMR) algorithm, highresolution can be achieved near interface to characterize micro flow phenomenon. A high-robustness algorithm for large-density-ratio two phase flow is used to improve the accuracy for momentum and interface advection. Crater depth and central jet height during impact are compared with available experimental data. The evolution of crown splash at high Weber number is analyzed using numerical tools.

Abstract:Due to the complexity and short timescale of detonation, it is usually difficult to capture its transient characteristics experimentally. Advanced numerical methods are essential for enhancing the understanding of the flow field structure and combustion mechanism of detonation. In this study, a density-based compressible reactive flow solver called CDSFoam is developed for simulating gas-droplet two-phase detonation combustion based on OpenFOAM. The primary feature of this solver is its implementation of two-way coupling between gas and liquid phases, utilizing the Eulerian–Lagrangian method. The key enhancement is an improved approximate Riemann solver used to solve the convective flux, reducing dissipation while ensuring robustness. Time integration is achieved through the third-order strong stability preserving Runge–Kutta method. Additionally, CDSFoam incorporates dynamic load balancing and adaptive mesh refinement techniques to mitigate computational costs while achieving high-resolution flow fields dynamically. To validate the reliability and accuracy of the solver, a series of benchmark cases are examined, including the multi-component inert and reactive shock tube, the stable diffusion process, the Riemann problem, the one-dimensional detonation, the two-dimensional detonation and oblique detonation, the droplet phase model, the two-dimensional gas–liquid two-phase detonation, and the two-phase rotating detonation. The results show that CDSFoam can well predict the shock wave discontinuity, shock wave induced ignition, molecular diffusion, detonation key parameters, detonation cell size, and the main characteristics of gas–liquid two-phase detonation.

Abstract:This article examines the structure and stability of detonations in mixtures of gases and solid particles via direct numerical simulation. Cases with both reactive and inert particles are considered. First, the two-phase flow model is presented and the assumptions that it is based upon are discussed. Steady-wave structures admitted by the model are subsequently analysed. Next, the algorithm employed for the numerical simulations is described. It is a recently developed high-order shock-capturing algorithm for compressible two-phase flows. The accuracy of the algorithm has been verified through a series of code validation and numerical convergence tests, some of which are included in this article. Subsequently, numerical results for both one-dimensional and two-dimensional detonations are presented and discussed. These results show that the mass, momentum and energy transfers between the two phases result in detonation structures that are substantially different from those observed in the corresponding purely gaseous flows. The effect of certain important parameters, such as particle reactivity, particle volume fraction, and particle diameter, are examined in detail. The numerical results predict that increased particle reactivity suppresses the flow instabilities and increases the detonation velocities. It is further predicted that sufficiently high particle volume fractions can cause detonation quenching regardless of particle reactivity.
