Abstract:Electronic nose (E-nose) technology has emerged as a promising tool for rapid and objective analysis of complex odor profiles in various industries, including the tobacco sector. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the applications of E-noses in the tobacco industry, focusing on their potential for enhancing quality control, optimizing blend formulations, monitoring processing conditions, and assuring the quality of finished products. We discuss the basic principles, working mechanisms, sensor types, and data processing techniques employed in E-noses, as well as the challenges and limitations associated with their adoption in the tobacco industry. These challenges include sensor drift, calibration, interference from environmental factors, the complexity of tobacco aroma and flavor profiles, and regulatory and ethical considerations. Abstract:With the development of olfaction sensors sensors, many research and applications have been made in the electronic nose. The electronic nose consists of an array of gas sensors with different selectivity patterns, signal handling and pattern recognition and decision strategy. Measurement data from the artificial smell and taste sensors are used to produce sensor-specific opinion about these two human-like sensing modalities. This paper is introduced the configuration and basic principle of electronic nose? at the same time, current research situation and applications of the electronic nose in the food industry have been introduced in details. It is also given that the theoretic and technology problem which should be solved.

Abstract:As a novelty bionic technology, the electronic nose has attracted attention in detection of food and agricultural by-products. Literatures have been reported in the applications of wine, tea, beverage, grain, oil, meat, dairy, vegetables, fruits and so on, showing a well application prospect in food and agricultural byproducts detection by using electronic nose. With the deepening of relevant researches and constantly emerging of new technologies, the electronic nose technology has also been improved. The emergence of new sensor technologies helps to develop electronic noses with completely novelty mechanisms. A more comprehensive detection could be realized integrating the electronic nose with other analytical instruments. A combination of electronic nose and the wireless communication technology, overcoming the limitation that a traditional electronic nose can not be applied to the on-site and mobile environments, expands the scope of applications of electronic nose. This paper aims at making comprehensive discussions and analyses from these three aspects respectively, then summarizing as a reference for the subsequent researches.

Abstract:As a novel bionic analytical technique, an electronic nose, inspired by the mechanism of the biological olfactory system and integrated with modern sensing technology, electronic technology and pattern recognition technology, has been widely used in many areas. Moreover, recent basic research findings in biological olfaction combined with computational neuroscience promote its development both in methodology and application. In this review, the basic information processing principle of biological olfaction and artificial olfaction are summarized and compared, and four olfactory models and their applications to electronic noses are presented. Finally, a chaotic olfactory neural network is detailed and the utilization of several biologically oriented learning rules and its spatiotemporal dynamic propties for electronic noses are discussed. The integration of various phenomena and their mechanisms for biological olfaction into an electronic nose context for information processing will not only make them more bionic, but also perform better than conventional methods. However, many problems still remain, which should be solved by further cooperation between theorists and engineers.

Abstract:This review paper introduces the research progress of bioelectronic nose and bioelectronic tongue technology in vitro and in vivo in our group recent years. Bioelectronic nose and bioelectronic tongue is one kind of biomimetic sensors system or a smart instrument combined electronic sensors with biological olfactory and gustatory organ and pattern recognition techniques etc. In this research work we presented some novel ideas in series including culturing living olfactory and gustatory tissue and cells and cell network on the surface of devices and the implanted electrode in olfactory bulb, and while the paper also gives some practiccal applications in the fields of detection of odorants and tastants in food.

Abstract:The electronic nose (e-nose) is designed to crudely mimic the mammalian nose in that most contain sensors that non-selectively interact with odor molecules to produce some sort of signal that is then sent to a computer that uses multivariate statistics to determine patterns in the data. This pattern recognition is used to determine that one sample is similar or different from another based on headspace volatiles. There are different types of e-nose sensors including organic polymers, metal oxides, quartz crystal microbalance and even gas-chromatography (GC) or combined with mass spectroscopy (MS) can be used in a non-selective manner using chemical mass or patterns from a short GC column as an e-nose or "Z" nose. The electronic tongue reacts similarly to non-volatile compounds in a liquid. This review will concentrate on applications of e-nose and e-tongue technology for edible products and pharmaceutical uses.

Abstract:An electronic nose is a bionic instrument comprising an array of electronic chemical sensors with partial specificity and an appropriate pattern-recognition system,which mimic the mammal olfaction system and can recognize simple or complex odors.As a newly developed measurement method,electronic nose with many advantages including general purpose,fast analysis,versatile,easy to use,low cost,portable,suitable for automated and on-line monitoring has been used widely in the areas of food industry,environmental monitoring,public safety and medical diagnostics.With the growing demand for on-line and continuous monitoring of environmental applications,electronic nose also shows its potential in environmental monitoring.Based on brief introduction of the concept,principles and history of electronic nose,application and progress of electronic nose in environmental monitoring were reviewed.Conclusion is drawn that electronic nose is suitable in large sample scale screening,emergent pollution alarm and pollution sources monitoring.

Abstract:The electronic nose, commonly referred to as e-nose, has become an essential tool for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which play critical roles in air quality, climate change, and human health. Inspired from the human olfactory system, e-noses offer key advantages in portability and cost-effectiveness, making them indispensable for identifying a series of VOCs. This review explores advancements in e-nose technology for VOC detection, detailing the operational principles of various sensors, and assessing their strengths and weaknesses. It also examines the conventional and novel algorithms for VOC pattern recognition, highlighting their role in enhancing detection accuracy and application robustness. Moreover, the review discusses the diverse applications of e-noses, ranging from environmental monitoring to critical sectors such as food processing and medical diagnostics. Finally, the review addresses current challenges in e-nose applications, such as selectivity and sensitivity, and offers insights into emerging trends and future perspectives in e-nose development.

Abstract:As two of the basic senses of human beings, olfaction and gustation play a very important role in daily life. These two types of chemical sensors are important for recognizing environmental conditions. Electronic nose and electronic tongue, which mimics animals' olfaction and gustation to detect odors and chemical components, have been carried out due to their potential commercial applications for biomedicine, food industry and environmental protection. In this report, the biomimetic artificial nose and tongue is presented. Firstly, the smell and taste sensors mimicking the mammalian olfaction and gustation was described, and then, some mimetic design of electronic nose and tongue for odorants and tastants detection are developed. Finally, olfactory and gustatory biosensors are presented as the developing trends of this field.

Abstract:Artificial olfaction, also known as an electronic nose, is a gas identification device that replicates the human olfactory organ. This system integrates sensor arrays to detect gases, data acquisition for signal processing, and data analysis for precise identification, enabling it to assess gases both qualitatively and quantitatively in complex settings. This article provides a brief overview of the research progress in electronic nose technology, which is divided into three main elements, focusing on gas-sensitive materials, electronic nose applications, and data analysis methods. Furthermore, the review explores both traditional MOS materials and the newer porous materials like MOFs for gas sensors, summarizing the applications of electronic noses across diverse fields including disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring, food safety, and agricultural production. Additionally, it covers electronic nose pattern recognition and signal drift suppression algorithms. Ultimately, the summary identifies challenges faced by current systems and offers innovative solutions for future advancements. Overall, this endeavor forges a solid foundation and establishes a conceptual framework for ongoing research in the field.

Abstract:The electronic nose (e-Nose) has more and more promising applications in home healthcare. In this paper, we introduce a portable e-Nose intended to satisfy the home healthcare applications. It employs semiconductor and electrochemical sensors to compose an array in a chamber to conduct breath analysis with pre-concentration and multiple desorption procedures. ON e-Nose II supplies a smart and interactive graphical user interface by a colourful TFT LCD and USB host interface. A package of supporting software on personal computer (PC) is also developed for data acquisition and pattern recognition. The results indicate that using multiple desorption methods, our e-Nose system may distinguish lung benign diseases, like pneumonia and pneumoconiosis, especially, healthy controls and lung cancer patients were separated with high accuracy through the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath. Our e-Nose instrument demonstrates excellent potential for assist in quick monitoring of respiratory diseases for family members at home in the near future.

Abstract:A developed electronic nose system is described and used to measure different brands and qualities of milk. Pattern recognition algorithm serves for data analysis and recognition. In the experiment, milk components can be detected by Metal Oxide Sensor Array, and data graphs from sensors are then recorded in computer. Principal Component Analysis and Artificial Neural Network identify graph eigenvalues and distinguish different components. After, being compared to standard sample, milk's deteroprate grade can be estimated. Experimental results demonstrate good identification of this system in milk quality determination. With other advantages such as convenience and safety, electronic nose technology shows the potential in future application.
Quality characterization of tobacco flavor and tobacco leaf position identification based on homemade electronic nose

Abstract:A set of nine unique tobacco extract samples was analyzed using a self-developed electronic nose (E-nose) system, a commercial E-nose, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The evaluation employed principal component analysis, statistical quality control, and soft independent modeling of class analogies (SIMCA). These multifaceted statistical methods scrutinized the collected data. Subsequently, a quality control model was devised to assess the stability of the sample quality. The results showed that the custom E-nose system could successfully distinguish between tobacco extracts with similar odors. After further training and the development of a quality control model for accepted tobacco extracts, it was possible to identify samples with normal and abnormal quality. To further validate our E-nose and extend its use within the tobacco industry, we collected and accurately classified the flavors of different tobacco leaf positions, with a remarkable accuracy rate of 0.9744. This finding facilitates the practical application of our E-nose system for the efficient identification of tobacco leaf positions.

Abstract:The application of e-nose and e-tongue in determining food quality were introduced.Future trends and limitation of e-nose and e-tongue were discussed.Working principles of sensors and pattern recognition algorithms were introduced.An e-nose or an e-tongue is a group of gas sensors or chemical sensors that simulate human nose or human tongue. Both e-nose and e-tongue have shown great promise and utility in improving assessments of food quality characteristics compared with traditional detection methods.This review summarizes the application of e-nose and e-tongue in determining the quality-related properties of foods. The working principles, applications, and limitations of the sensors employed by electronic noses and electronic tongues were introduced and compared. Widely employed pattern recognition algorithms, including artificial neural network (ANN), convolutional neural network (CNN), principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square regression (PLS), and support vector machine (SVM), were introduced and compared in this review.Overall, e-nose or e-tongue combining pattern recognition algorithms are very powerful analytical tools, which are relatively low-cost, rapid, and accurate. E-nose and e-tongue are also suitable for both in-line and off-line measurements, which are very useful in monitoring food processing and detecting the end product quality. The user of e-nose and e-tongue need to strictly control sample preparation, sampling, and data processing.

Abstract:The dairy and food industries aims to achieve targeted productivity and very keen on product quality and consumer demand. Due to increasing technological advances, these food and dairy industries gained numerous technological support. Among the diverse development, the usages of e-nose and e-tongue paved the way to handle the production without any kind of deviation. In the food industries product perfection, uniform taste and aroma plays a supreme role because these parameters determine the marketing strategy. The electronic nose (e-nose) is a non-destructive intelligent electronic sensing instrument, which mimics the human olfactory system to detect, discriminate and classify odour samples. e-nose and e-tongue is an electronic tool used as a fast screening method to provide information about the product quality which is not easily done by manual methods as it is a time-consuming process. In this paper, the principle of e-nose and e-tongue and their applications in the dairy and food industries are explained.

Abstract:This paper provides a review of the most recent works in machine olfaction as applied to the identification of Chinese Herbal Medicines (CHMs). Due to the wide variety of CHMs, the complexity of growing sources and the diverse specifications of herb components, the quality control of CHMs is a challenging issue. Much research has demonstrated that an electronic nose (E-nose) as an advanced machine olfaction system, can overcome this challenge through identification of the complex odors of CHMs. E-nose technology, with better usability, high sensitivity, real-time detection and non-destructive features has shown better performance in comparison with other analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Although there has been immense development of E-nose techniques in other applications, there are limited reports on the application of E-noses for the quality control of CHMs. The aim of current study is to review practical implementation and advantages of E-noses for robust and effective odor identification of CHMs. It covers the use of E-nose technology to study the effects of growing regions, identification methods, production procedures and storage time on CHMs. Moreover, the challenges and applications of E-nose for CHM identification are investigated. Based on the advancement in E-nose technology, odor may become a new quantitative index for quality control of CHMs and drug discovery. It was also found that more research could be done in the area of odor standardization and odor reproduction for remote sensing.

Abstract:Electronic nose technology has been developed over the past 15 years in the field of chemistry as an electronic equivalent of the biologic mechanism of smell. Since its inception, it has been well recognized that there is great potential in applying this technology to the field of medicine. This review discusses those areas of medicine in which electronic nose technology has been applied. For each area, this review addresses the scope of the medical problem that has been studied, how the electronic nose technology may help address the medical problem, and the results of such studies to date. Next generation electronic noses will be refined to better analyze specific disease states. This will require further evaluation of the specific volatiles to be tested. This information may then be brought to bear on refinement of the chemistry of the electronic nose sensors, making them more sensitive and specific for the particular disease of interest. The ultimate goal of work in this arena is to make an electronic nose that is portable, fast, inexpensive and, therefore, suitable for use in the examination room or at the bedside, making it facile as a diagnostic tool.
