Abstract:The robust H-infinity control problem for time-varying uncertain linear systems with time-varying state and control delays is considered. Based on the Riccati equation approach, we design a robust H-infinity linear time-invariant state feedback control law, which stabilizes the system and reduces the effect of the disturbance input on the controlled output to a prescribed level for all admissible uncertainties. A sufficient condition for the existence of the robust H-infinity controller is derived and two synthesis methods are presented for a robust H-infinity control law to uncertain time-delay systems. One is to construct a robust H-infinity control law by an equivalent linear time-invariant structural description for the sufficient condition and the control law can be obtained by solving an algebraic Riccati equation (ARE). The other method is to transform the sufficient condition into a linear matrix inequality (LMI) problem and the control law can be obtained by solving the LMI. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the obtained results.

Abstract:The modern power system features high penetration of power converters due to the development of renewables, HVDC, etc. Currently, the controller design and parameter tuning of power converters heavily rely on rich engineering experience and extrapolation from a single converter system, which may lead to inferior performance or even instabilities under variable grid conditions. In this paper, we propose an H_∞-control design framework to provide a systematic way for the robust and optimal control design of power converters. We discuss how to choose weighting functions to achieve anticipated and robust performance with regards to multiple control objectives. Further, we show that by a proper choice of the weighting functions, the converter can be conveniently specified as grid-forming or grid-following in terms of small-signal dynamics. Moreover, this paper first proposes a decentralized stability criterion based on the small gain theorem, which enables us to guarantee the global small-signal stability of a multi-converter system through local control design of the power converters. We provide high-fidelity nonlinear simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) real-time simulations to illustrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:Robust gradient-type iterative learning control (ILC) was studied for a class of uncertain linear systems. A sufficient condition to ensure the robust convergence of the ILC process in the finite time interval was obtained by analyzing the plant uncertainty's effects on feedback and feedforward control. A robust ILC law with both feedback and feedforward was obtained by reformulating the ILC design problem as an H_∞ synthesis problem based on the above condition. The ILC design procedure has two steps: first, the feedback controller is synthesized based on the H_∞ approach; then the feedforward controller is designed by the gradient method with fixed step size. The presented simulation example verified the feasibility of the proposed design procedure.

Abstract:Based on Lyapunov method,a nonlinear robust adaptive control scheme is proposed for an electro-hydraulic system to reduce the influence of the systems uncertain parameters and uncertain model.Firstly,the control objective function is defined.Then,on the base of the control objective function,the adaptive controller and the parameters update laws are presented via using Lyapunov stability method and a simple robust method is introduced to compensate the model uncertainty.The proposed control scheme is simple and insensitive to parameter and model uncertainties.In addition,the controller is smooth and does not cause chattering phenomena.Simulation results show that the control approach can improve tracking accuracy effectively and the theory analysis is correct.

Abstract:In this paper, a parallel AC/DC power system is investigated, and a nonlinear robust controller is proposed to improve transient stability of the power system and to damp out any prolonged oscillation after a fault is cleared. Lyapunov's direct method is used to synthesize the control, and asymptotic stability of the closed loop system and improved dynamic performance are shown by both theoretical proof and simulation results.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the problem of robust H-infinity control for linear uncertain time-delay systems with norm-bounded nonlinear uncertainty in both the state and control. Also, the time delay is time-varying and can exist both in the state and control. Using the fact that the type of nonlinear uncertainty set considered here has an equivalent representation by linear uncertainty set, we propose an approach for designing a memoryless state feedback control law which will stabilize the time-delay systems and, simultaneously, guarantee a prespecified H-infinity disturbance attenuation constraint for all admissible uncertainty.

Abstract:Based on HVDC transmission system, this paper presents an approach to design decentralized robust adaptive controllers for converters. Utilizing Backstepping procedure, general expression of control strategy for HVDC converters is acquired. The control strategy can restrain the nonlinear uncertainty through injection of adaptive nonlinear damping terms in controllers. The proposed decentralized adaptive control scheme guarantees that all the signals in the closed-loop system are bounded in the presence of high order interconnections and bounded disturbances. The controllers only use local measurements, which makes them practicable. Moreover, the control law is independent of transmission network parameters. Simulation results acquired by using NETOMAC software show that the controllers have better performance than the traditional PI controllers and can improve the stability of HVDC transmission system.

Abstract:A three-order non-affine nonlinear control model is presented for HVDC systems and the inverse system method is used for the linearization of systems. A feedback linearization controller and a pole-place controller are designed for the converter operating in constant rectifier firing angle/constant inverter DC current mode. The stability of the closed-loop system is analyzed. Its effectiveness is demonstrated with the simulation results. Abstract:A nonlinear auxiliary controller for HVDC converters in AC/DC power systems,where the AC and DC lines are not in parallel connection,was developed to damp inter-area oscillations.The method treats the dynamics of DC power regulation as a first-order inertia block and simplifies the AC/DC multi-machine system into a two-machine power ( )system.Based on the third-order model obtained,state-feedback linearization and LQR approach are applied to design a nonlinear controller.Computer simulation results have shown that the controller can effectively damp inter-area oscillations and enhance transient stability.But the auxiliary control for HVDC converters also introduced some undesirable side effects.Possible problems and future work are discussed at last.

Abstract:Robust self-adaptive output-feedback controllers have been designed for the converters of High voltage direct current (HVDC) system. First, the dynamic model of the converters of HVDC system is transferred to a nonlinear system with an input-output model. Then, a self-adaptive nonlinear damping item is used to counteract the nonlinear uncertainties and unknown bounded disturbances. Lyapunov stability theory is to form the controller and the self-adaptive law of the controller parameter. It is shown that the controllers can guarantee the stability of the closed loop system. Finally, the controllers are applied to a HVDC transmission system with 3 generators. Simulation results show that the controllers can enhance the system stability and robustness, compared with the traditional PI controllers.

Abstract:Voltage source converter (VSC) based HVDC is a multivariable, strongly coupled nonlinear system. It is quite difficult to establish the precise mathematic model of the VSC. This paper adopts the theory of the nonlinear transformation and the feedback linearization of nonlinear system, establishes the nonlinear mathematic model of the VSC in d-q synchronous reference frame. The decoupled control strategy with state variable feedback linearization, which is combined with the optical control theory, is proposed in this paper. And with this strategy the active and reactive power can be controlled independently. Simulation results realized by PSCAD/EMTDC show that the designed control system has better control performance.

Abstract:The Hα robust controller design of AC/DC power system is investigated in this paper. Firstly, a novel fifth-order uncertain non-affine nonlinear model is put forward which describes the dynamics of both DC and AC systems. Then, an Hα controller is constructed by employing the feedback linearization technique and linear Hα theory. It is shown that the stability of the system is enhanced by the proposed firing angle control of the converter. The robust performance is improved as well. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Abstract:The dynamics of a large-scale power system are both nonlinear and interconnected. The equilibrium of such a system is typically unknown and uncertain, and the controllers within are also subject to physical limitations. In this paper, a new application of nonlinear robust control is presented for power system control design. rt is assumed that the controllers are designed as a part of generator excitation system design. First, a customized exact feedback linearization scheme is developed for the power system under investigation. This new linearization scheme allows one to transform the power system with a single-axis system model into a linear uncertain system with an unknown equilibrium. Based on the latest development of nonlinear robust control theory, a novel control design is then applied to stabilize the resulting linearized uncertain system. Finally, a nonlinear decentralized excitation control is obtained by the inverse transformation. Compared with existing control schemes, the proposed control is free from such common deficiencies of power system nonlinear controllers as network dependence and equilibrium dependence. Detailed stability analysis and engineering judgment in the control design are provided. The results of simulation studies are presented.

Abstract:The control problem for a class of differential inclusion system with prespecified time domain performances of output was considered. The system may be converted to the nonlinear uncertain system with output constraints. Based on practical stability theory, the control problem of the system was analyzed. The design method of the nonlinear robust controller with specific time domain performance was given. The conditions of strongly practical robust stability for the system is to satisfy a series of parameter conditions and linear matrix inequalities. The simulation results have shown that the dynamic response of the closed loop system has reached time domain performance of the original design.

Abstract:For linear multivariable discrete-time control systems, a new design approach to robust optimal controllers is developed in this paper. By presenting a new design concept to select row characteristic functions for a multi-variable system, a robust decomposition method is built up to guarantee the normalization of the closed-loop transfer function matrix. The H-infinity robust stability and the optimal time domain indices for the closed-loop system are then achieved simultaneously by utilizing the 1-infinity optimal control approach in its decoupling equivalent system. Finally, optimization and robustness of this digital controller are verified by an on-line application in a paper-making control system for three different indices of quantity and moisture.
Robust Design of HVDC Supplementary Controllers Based on WAMS Signals

Abstract:The supplementary control of high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission is capable of enhancing the stability of AC/DC power systems; however, inaccuracies of the reduced HVDC model, signals' time delays and disturbances increase the uncertainties which should be considered in the control design process. In order to enhance the stability of AC/DC power systems despite the presence of these uncertainties, a wide area robust controller (WARC) design method for HVDC supplementary controller was proposed. The sliding mode manifold was designed according to the dynamics of the center of inertia and the sliding mode control method; and then the Lyapunov stability criterion was adopted to guarantee that the AC/DC power system would be asymptotically stable in the presence of the uncertainties. The validity of the WARC was verified by comparing with the conventional pole placement method and PID control method in a parallel AC/DC power system and a multi-infeed AC/DC power system, respectively. The results from both time-domain simulation and inter-area oscillation mode analysis prove that the proposed WARC can improve system stability effectively and has obvious superiority over the conventional methods. © 2013 Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering.

Abstract:A nonlinear robust internal controller design methodology based on feedback linearization H∞ theory for a unified power flow controller(UPFC) was presented to solve the uncertain disturbance rejection problem faced by voltage source converter(VSC) based flexible AC transmission system(FACTS) devices.A 5th-order UPFC affine nonlinear system considering external disturbances was converted to a linear system via exact feedback linearization method.A linear H∞ approach was then applied to design the robust internal controller and the final control law for the original UPFC system was achieved by the feedback mapping.The proposed robust controller was validated via a detailed device-level simulation on a 4-genarator-12-bus system platform and compared with the conventional PI controller.The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed UPFC controller exhibits excellent robustness under various disturbances and provides better performance in power system transient stability enhancement and power oscillation damping than the conventional PI controller.
