Abstract:Academic literature includes abundant citation information, which becomes the major analysis object and hot topic in both bibliometry and scientific research evaluation field.Compared with quantitative analysis methods based on mathematics and statistics, the use of visualization methods can realize the vivid presentation of citation information in time sequence and hierarchy, as well as the interactive mining of complex citation networks, which is of great significance to the reform of scientific research evaluation and the innovation of bibliometric methods.This paper introduces domestic and foreign relevant research on academic citation information analysis in recent years, summarizes the general framework of academic citation information visualization;classifies visualization methods according to two types of analysis tasks, entity evaluation and bibliometry, then elaborates the current research status, advantages and disadvantages of each type of methods, and finally points out the challenges and directions for further exploration of academic citation information visualization.

Abstract:Objective: To improve the performance of citation recommendation, by using innovative citation recommendation methods. Methodology: By utilizing changes in the topical content of publications over time, citation graph, plus proximity-based citation contexts, I calculate the publication topical importance (prior) over time, and I use the topic prior, publication prior from author relation and Wikipedia along with the language model prioritize a number of scientific publication given their published time and user information need, i.e., a piece of working context or a publication abstract. Preliminary Experimentation and Result: In the preliminary experience, I employed the classical language model (without priors) and the language model with PageRank priors as the baseline. Preliminary experiment shows publication topic prior is important for citation recommendation given a textual information need.
Recovering uncaptured citations in a scholarly network: A two-step citation analysis to estimate publication importance

Abstract:AbstractThe citation relationships between publications, which are significant for assessing the importance of scholarly components within a network, have been used for various scientific applications. Missing citation metadata in scholarly databases, however, create problems for classical citation-based ranking algorithms and challenge the performance of citation-based retrieval systems. In this research, we utilize a two-step citation analysis method to investigate the importance of publications for which citation information is partially missing. First, we calculate the importance of the author and then use his importance to estimate the publication importance for some selected articles. To evaluate this method, we designed a simulation experiment-"random citation-missing"-to test the two-step citation analysis that we carried out with the Association for Computing Machinery ACM Digital Library DL. In this experiment, we simulated different scenarios in a large-scale scientific digital library, from high-quality citation data, to very poor quality data, The results show that a two-step citation analysis can effectively uncover the importance of publications in different situations. More importantly, we found that the optimized impact from the importance of an author first step is exponentially increased when the quality of citation decreases. The findings from this study can further enhance citation-based publication-ranking algorithms for real-world applications.

Abstract:Citations are the cornerstone of knowledge propagation and the primary means of assessing the quality of research, as well as directing investments in science. Science is increasingly becoming "data-intensive", where large volumes of data are collected and analyzed to discover complex patterns through simulations and experiments, and most scientific reference works have been replaced by online curated datasets. Yet, given a dataset, there is no quantitative, consistent and established way of knowing how it has been used over time, who contributed to its curation, what results have been yielded or what value it has. The development of a theory and practice of data citation is fundamental for considering data as first-class research objects with the same relevance and centrality of traditional scientific products. Many works in recent years have discussed data citation from different viewpoints: illustrating why data citation is needed, defining the principles and outlining recommendations for data citation systems, and providing computational methods for addressing specific issues of data citation. The current panorama is many-faceted and an overall view that brings together diverse aspects of this topic is still missing. Therefore, this paper aims to describe the lay of the land for data citation, both from the theoretical (the why and what) and the practical (the how) angle.

Abstract:During the last 10 years, a new framework of SCIENCE STUDIES Theory System has been formed with the progress of science and technology (S&T). Starting with the research tradition and paradigm, we study the main academic fields, the relative disciplines and focuses of SCIENCE STUDIES with the analytical tools and the methods in Scientometrics. The results of study conclude the following: l in the applied field, “Science”, “Technology”, “Innovation” and corresponding “ST l in the methodological field, “Webometrics”, “Knowledge Mapping and Visualization Technology”, which are the advanced domains, have developed greatly; l in the theoretical field, scholars and scientists start to focus on the interaction of Science-Technology-Innovation, the evolution of some disciplines in natural science and the theory of cooperation in S&T. Basing on the above, the construction of SCIENCE STUDIES Theory System in the new century is discussed.
The relationship between interdisciplinarity and citation impact-a novel perspective on citation accumulation

Abstract:Interdisciplinary research is of significance for creating breakthroughs and facilitating innovations and may achieve higher citation impact, although contrary results still exist. The current study looks into the relationship between interdisciplinarity and citation impact from a brand-new perspective-the process of citation accumulation-by exploring how interdisciplinarity, as measured by Rao-Stirling and DIV, affects the accumulating process of citations, based on scientific papers published by Chinese or US authors in 2009-2011 in Chemistry. Two metrics are used to measure how long it takes for a paper to reach its citation peak (PEAK_YEAR) and how sustainable the citation impact remains after the peak (SUS). The results show that compared with Rao-Stirling, DIV is more sensitive to the length of the citation window and more closely aligned with the nature of interdisciplinarity. In Chemistry, higher interdisciplinarity is more likely to encounter delayed recognition and greater citation sustainability, which may explain the inconsistency in the relationship between interdisciplinarity and citation impact. In conclusion, it is necessary to consider the length of the citation window when explaining the relationship between interdisciplinarity and citation impact. A longer citation window may be a better solution, as an alternative or supplement, in assessing the academic performance of interdisciplinary research.

Abstract:Scientometrics is the study of the quantitative aspects of the process of science as a communication system. It is centrally, but not only, concerned with the analysis of citations in the academic literature. In recent years it has come to play a major role in the measurement and evaluation of research performance. In this review we consider: the historical development of scientometrics, sources of citation data, citation metrics and the “laws” of scientometrics, normalisation, journal impact factors and other journal metrics, visualising and mapping science, evaluation and policy, and future developments.

Abstract:Citations in science are being studied from several perspectives. On the one hand, there are approaches such as scientometrics and the science of science, which take a more quantitative perspective. In this chapter I briefly review some of the literature on citations, citation distributions and models of citations. These citations feature prominently in another part of the literature which is dealing with research evaluation and the role of metrics and indicators in that process. Here I briefly review part of the discussion in research evaluation. This also touches on the subject of how citations relate to peer review. Finally, I try to integrate the two literatures with the aim of clarifying what I believe the two can learn from each other. The fundamental problem in research evaluation is that research quality is unobservable. This has consequences for conclusions that we can draw from quantitative studies of citations and citation models. The term "indicators" is a relevant concept in this context, which I try to clarify. Causality is important for properly understanding indicators, especially when indicators are used in practice: when we act on indicators, we enter causal territory. Even when an indicator might have been valid, through its very use, the consequences of its use may invalidate it. By combining citation models with proper causal reasoning and acknowledging the fundamental problem about unobservable research quality, we may hope to make progress.

Abstract:Scientific data is an important strategic resource, and scientific data management has received extensive attention in academic research and practice. Scientific data management pertains to the utilization of scientific data, and the scientific data requirements can be identified through observation and research of the scientific data uses. This paper discusses relevant research on scientific data citation using the academic achievements of citation content analysis as reference. The citation content analysis framework of scientific data was developed, which divided the importance of scientific data based on the citation functions, and the value of the scientific data and its sources was judged according to their importance. The consistency of the framework was tested by quantitative analysis, and 32 English papers in the field of oceanography were selected as samples to analyze the value and source characteristics of the scientific data in oceanography.

Abstract:[Purpose/significance] Based on citation, academic evaluation is one of the main academic evaluation paradigms at present, but the academic circle has not formed a unified scientific understanding of the essence（or citation relationship） and function of citation, so the result of academic evaluation based on citation has been questioned by the academic circle.[Method/process] To this end, 720 papers from the representative journals of engineering, management, pharmacy, science, literature and philosophy from 2010 to 2021 were selected to manually identify and label the positions, forms, types and functions of cited references（citations） in the papers（cited references）,then a total of 16133 citation data were obtained.Secondly, based on the theory of discourse structure and function, the distribution of citation features and citation functions in different disciplines and years is judged and counted.Finally, the correlation between citation features and citation functions is analyzed, as well as the evolution trend of them during the period of time.[Result/conclusion]As a result, the following conclusions are found: first, there is a certain relationship between the location, type, form and function of a citation.To some extent, citation characteristics don’t only reflect the author’s citation motivation, but also influence or determine the citation function.Second, nearly 2/3 of the citations played the role of persuasion in academic papers, and only about 1/3 of the citations played the role of identification or knowledge transmission.Third, there are some differences in the relationship between citation characteristics and functions of different disciplines.Generally, from the perspective of discourse structure and function theory, although citation is not a necessary component of discourse, in fact, no matter what role and function citation plays in academic papers, it has become an organic part of the discourse structure of academic papers.And the phenomenon that the academic evaluation result based on citation is questioned by the academic circle is rational.Therefore, in academic evaluation activities, it is necessary to avoid simply using quotations to make evaluation results.
A Study On Knowledge Diffusion Between Scientific Institutions Based On Citation Network Analysis

Abstract:Knowledge diffusion has played a more and more important role on knowledge innovation process. Nowadays, with the continuous development of globalization, knowledge diffusion has been beyond the limitation of institutions, areas, and countries toward a global process. For institutions such as universities and research department, knowledge diffusion between them can show their cooperation relationship and closeness of knowledge flow. Scientific papers, are main carriers of scientific knowledge, and the mutual citations between scientific institutions depict the paths and directions of knowledge diffusion. This paper establishes a visualization perspective of knowledge diffusion by combing scientometrics and complex network theory. We selects a Chinese university, Harbin Institute of Technology ( HIT) as a sample, construct its mutual, citation networks with Web of Science database, and compares network topology parameters and evolution process of these citation networks. Finally, this paper proposes a suggestion on how to find the closer relationship with a institution and how to make the knowledge diffusion between them more fluent and efficient.

Abstract:[Purpose/Significance]The citation frequency of documents has always been the focus of researchers in the field of metrolo﹣gy. Traditional research work may be biased because of too much attention being paid to journals and other factors other than literature it﹣self or insufficient attention to the distinctions of the title and abstract, which characterize the core information of of the literature. [Meth﹣od/Process]In this study, we use TF-IDF algorithm and negative binomial regression model to analyze the citation frequency, which is mainly due to the influence of the paper's own factors. [Result/Conclusion]It is concluded that the factors such as the distinction between the title and abstract, the number of papers used and the ability of hot spot persistence have a positive effect on the cited frequency, while the length of papers has a negative effect on the cited frequency, and the relationship between the author's cooperation intensity, the num﹣ ber of references cited and the cited frequency presents an inverted U-shape. The differences in citation between the funded and non-fund﹣ed factors confirm the existence of the optimal scale of co-authorship based on the index of citation frequency. It is suggested that research﹣ers organize headlines and abstract languages with more novel and refined words in the process of writing papers, to distinguish from other similar research results, improve the quality of academic results and the amount of papers used, maintain the hot-spot guiding role, and thus improve citation performance.

Abstract:This study seeks to investigate the place and role of citation analysis in our own discipline and other disciplines. The authors have examined the research literature of informa tion science and other disciplines in order to: determine what proportion is devoted to citation analysis, develop an inductive typology to categorize the major foci of research being conducted under the rubric of citation analysis, and use the typology to determine how citation analysis is applied within information science and other disciplines. By isolating citation from bibliometrics in general, and by exploring the topic across literatures, the authors differen tiate their work from previous studies. Analysis of data from a ten-year sample of transdisciplinary social sciences literature suggests that two application areas predominate: the validity of citation as an evaluation tool, and impact or performance studies of authors, journals and institutions.
