Abstract:This study employed cognitive diagnostic modeling to examine whether learners' performance on the common subskills of listening and reading varied across modalities and performance levels, aiming to provide a better understanding of the similarities and differences between listening and reading in the Chinese EFL context. Specifically, we retrofitted a large-scale EFL test taken by 797 non-English-major undergraduates. We utilized the G-DINA package in R to obtain test takers' mastery patterns of global and local subskills in the listening and reading tests and further compared them through a mixed-design ANOVA. The results showed that the comprehension subskills were manifested similarly in listening and reading, but a modality effect did exist. Learners generally performed worse in listening and their mastery status of local and global skills was significantly different across modalities in that learners fulfilled global tasks better in listening and local tasks better in reading. The high-performing group mastered global skills better in listening and local skills better in reading while the low-performing group mastered global skills better in both listening and reading. The findings of the study provide backing for a modality effect in L2 comprehension, encouraging comprehension theorists and language teachers to reconsider the value of the modality-specific characteristics.

Abstract:The development and application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the field of Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) have had a considerable impact on the teaching methodologies in China. With an increasing emphasis on strengthening students’ learning initiative and adopting a “student-centred” teaching concept in FLT, language teachers and researchers in China have resolved to explore effective and appropriate teaching models both in theory and practice. A range of reforms of college English teaching in China has demonstrated the shift of the teaching focus from enhancing students’ reading ability to their listening and speaking abilities. More focus has been put on improving students’ communicative language ability (CLA). This paper aims to examine the feasibility of the student-centred teaching model utilised in an English audio-video speaking class (EAVSC) in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) environments at the authors’ university by carrying out two quantitative longitudinal case studies. Analysis of correlated data shows that this specific teaching model in general is both plausible and effective in improving students’ communicative language abilities, especially in their speaking abilities.

Abstract:Using Chinese language teaching in an engineering department as an example, this paper explores how language teaching can meet the challenges of globalisation and the advancement of technology by fulfilling its educational function as described in Byram's model of intercultural communicative competence. By adapting theories and practices from counselling psychology, the proposed curriculum focuses on emotions to help learners uncover emotional barriers that arise when confronted with differences. It will support learners in raising awareness and developing their capacity to negotiate differences, leading to more effective cooperation with others. The paper discusses the use of experiential exercises in the classroom. They include those developed in Chinese language pedagogy, namely the performed culture approach and those developed in humanistic psychotherapy, such as body psychotherapy. The aim is to help learners notice their own feelings, attitudes, and behaviour as well as the otherness of the other in the classroom. This approach is powerful because it is in the here and now. It utilises movements and different senses as well as cognition. It helps uncover barriers to intercultural communication hidden under the surface by making the unconscious conscious. Reflection is a key part of this process. Learners are expected to reflect on their own thinking and feelings and to make sense of the dynamics in the classroom. Learners are expected to develop reflexivity, subjectivity and intersubjective awareness while acquiring linguistic competency and social cultural rules of use.

Abstract:In this article,the author presents a brief overview of a new teaching model for CSL (Chinese as a Second Language) listening which was proposed in his newly published book Teaching Chinese Listening: Theory and Method. The model is guided by the Inclusiveness Principle which intends to maximize teaching effectiveness by means of designing activities that are capable of fulfilling more instructional goals in addition to the primary one. It also adopts a different framework of communicative language competence. The model distinguishes between teaching activities that focus on sound and those that focus on comprehension. Within each category,two types of questions are addressed: 1) How to select and adapt materials so that they are instructionally appropriate? 2) How to train listening skills by using the selected materials? The model not only reveals the unique feature of teaching listening,but also shows the inherent connection between listening teaching and the teaching of other skills.

Abstract:There has been much research into teacher beliefs about teaching and learning as seen in the general teacher education literature. In the field of language teacher education, this line of research has been evolving, with the recent trend being streamlined into "teacher cognition" as a generic or umbrella term. Despite increasing amounts of research output so far, research into foreign language teachers' cognitions about their own teaching and decision-making is still insufficient, particularly with regard to university-level English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) teachers in China. Drawing on Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory, this qualitative research focused on EFL teachers' cognitions about form-focused instruction in Chinese university settings. It intended to discover how teachers' cognitions changed when they were expected to teach in actual classrooms and what factors contributed to these changes. Data collected from four teacher-participants through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations and follow-up stimulated recall interviews showed participants' support for focus-on-form instruction, which means they not only paid attention to the grammatical form of the language but also to the meaning it is intended to convey. However, data also showed that the teacher-participants shifted from focus-on-form to focus-on-formS instruction in actual teaching, which suggests that they might have realized the challenges of carrying out teaching activities surrounding focus-on-form and would like to take an easier approach by only teaching the grammar of the language by focusing on formS. Such incongruences are interpreted with reference to a plethora of sociocultural factors including traditional Chinese thinking and institutional expectations. The implications of the findings for stakeholders in universities, including faculty members, students, and curriculum developers in similar contexts, are also discussed.

Abstract:Nowadays, language life is very prosperous, and a large number of new online words and phrases continue to emerge. These new words are an important way for international students to understand Chinese culture and improve their Chinese communication skills. The Chinese listening and speaking class integrates listening and speaking training, and is an important course type for cultivating the oral communication skills of international students in Chinese. Therefore, in teaching Chinese listening and speaking as a foreign language, we must pay attention to the use of new words and phrases on the internet.On the basis of previous research on teaching new words and phrases on the internet, this article investigates and analyzes the acquisition of new words and phrases by advanced stage international students, starting from the characteristics of new words and phrases on the internet. Through analysis, this article finds that there are some problems in the teaching of online new words and phrases. Therefore, teaching suggestions are proposed from three aspects: setting teaching objectives, selecting teaching content, and exploring teaching methods, in order to provide a certain teaching reference for the teaching of online new words and phrases in advanced listening and speaking classes.

Abstract:The accelerated process of globalization has increasingly underscored the significance of Chinese as a world language, with the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language assuming a crucial role in cross-cultural communication. Traditional cultural teaching methods, which often rely on unidirectional knowledge transmission, frequently fail to engage learners fully, resulting in superficial cultural understanding. Experiential cultural teaching, centered around the learners, utilizes immersive activities and interactive experiences to effectively address this shortcoming, allowing learners to perceive and comprehend the rich connotations of Chinese culture in authentic contexts. This paper will analyze the application of experiential teaching in Chinese cultural education for foreigners, exploring its unique advantages in enhancing learners’ cultural identity and practical language proficiency, and propose specific implementation strategies and considerations, aiming to provide new perspectives and methodological foundations for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

Abstract:This paper explores the possibility of teaching vocabulary in lexical chunks based on cognition.The author argues that the development of modern linguistics gives rise to the new realization that the mastery of lexical skills is closely related to people's cognitive ability.And then with the concept of meaning and the theory of prototypes and basic-level structures in cognitive linguistics as theoretical basis,the paper concludes that lexical chunks as a method of instructing vocabulary accord with the cognitive regularity in the learning process.Finally,this paper proposes a hypothesis about the design of the lexical chunks and exercises from the perspective of cognition.

Abstract:This research focuses on the practice of contextualization in teaching Chinese as a foreign language among a cohort of bilingual language teacher-researchers. It aims to extend the prevalent emphasis in the current literature that acknowledges the role of context in language education; however, these research studies primarily give voice to linguistic contexts or relegates context into a static physical space such as 'environment'. This research is grounded in a social constructionism perspective whereby context is regarded as a dynamic relation-building process, or more accurately, a contextualizing process, enabled through various sociocultural activities. The data reveal that the teacher-researchers employed various forms of contextualization in teaching and linked these to particular teaching content through identifiable, purposeful activities, resulting in a variety of students' responses. This research provides an evidence-based understanding of contextualization in CFL teaching for a more sustainable second language education.

Abstract:Listening causes great difficulties for EFL learners and little is known concerning the contribution of EFL learners' metacognitive awareness to their listening performance and to their mastery of listening subskill. In the present study, the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ) and an in-house listening test were used to collect data from 567 Chinese EFL college students. The G-DINA package in R was adopted to identify students' mastery patterns of listening subskills. The correlations of test takers' MALQ results and their listening scores and listening subskills mastery probability were analyzed, respectively, to investigate how test participants' metacognitive awareness relates to their language proficiency and listening subskills. According to the study, learners' metacognitive awareness has a significant positive relationship with their listening performance at overall and subskills levels. The findings of the study provide additional evidence for using the MALQ as an instrument to interpret learners' metacognitive awareness of listening strategies. It is thus recommended that theorists and language teachers involve metacognitive awareness of strategies in listening instructions.
Linguistic Relativity Unveiled: An Exploration of Language and Cognition in Second Language Acquisition

Abstract:In an era of rapid globalization, cultural exchange promotes a multilingual environment, thereby increasing exposure to different linguistic frameworks. This paper takes Chinese students with second language acquisition as the research object and tries to explore whether they are affected by psychological factors and environmental factors in the process of thinking and communication in their mother tongue or non-mother tongue. Based on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which holds that language shapes thinking, the study investigates the cognitive linguistic challenges posed by the diversity between Chinese and Western languages and the cultural specificity behind different languages for Chinese students studying abroad. Eight in-depth interviews were conducted with Chinese students who have studied and lived abroad to gain a nuanced understanding of their language background, learning process and experiences in different language environments. Qualitative textual analysis of these interviews revealed the profound impact of cultural and thinking differences on the language difficulties encountered by participants. This study also explores the psychological factors that influence the choice of thought and expression language in the second language environment. The results show that context, common language with communication partners and cultural differences play a key role in language selection among Chinese students. In addition, the study explored the feasibility of how different languages might be better suited to express specific concepts or emotions.
Optimizing auditory input for foreign language learners through a verbotonal-based dichotic listening approach

Abstract:Abstract The quality of the physical language signals to which learners are exposed and which result in neurobiological activity leading to perception constitutes a variable that is rarely, if ever, considered in the context of language learning. It deserves some attention. The current study identifies an optimal audio language input signal for Chinese EFL/ESL learners generated by modifying the physical features of language-bearing audio signals. This is achieved by applying the principles of verbotonalism in a dichotic listening context. Low-pass filtered (320 Hz cut-off) and unfiltered speech signals were dichotically and diotically directed to each hemisphere of the brain through the contralateral ear. Temporal and spatial neural signatures for the processing of the signals were detected in a combined event-related potential (ERP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment. Results showed that the filtered stimuli in the left ear and unfiltered in the right ear (FL-R) configuration provided optimal auditory language input by actively exploiting left-hemispheric dominance for language processing and right-hemispheric dominance for melodic processing, i.e., each hemisphere was fed the signals that it should be best equipped to process—and it actually did so effectively. In addition, the filtered stimuli in the right ear and unfiltered in the left ear (L-FR) configuration was identified as entirely non-optimal for language learners. Other outcomes included significant load reduction through exposure to both-ear-filtered FL-FR signals as well as the confirmation that non-language signals were recognized by the brain as irrelevant to language and did not trigger any language processing. These various outcomes will necessarily entail further research.

Abstract:Foreign language education involves not only language education but also cultural education. It is the new mission of today’s foreign language education to integrate Chinese traditional culture into foreign language teaching and cultivate foreign language talents who can tell Chinese stories well and spread Chinese voice. As a basic course for English majors, English Listening and Speaking faces many challenges when it is integrated into Chinese traditional culture, such as complex teaching content, limited teaching resources, insufficient teachers’ literacy, and students’ listening and speaking difficulties. In order to solve these problems, teachers and universities should work together to sort out the connotation of Chinese traditional culture, develop audio-visual teaching materials, organize teacher training, and innovate teaching methods, so as to effectively promote the connection between Chinese traditional culture and English Listening and Speaking curriculum system.

Abstract:With the rapid development and continuous improvement of modern science and technology, the multimedia technology based on computers and networks is becoming more and more popular due to its characteristics of the diversity of expression means, interactivity of operation forms, richness and sharing of resource storage, etc., into all aspects of social life. This research mainly discusses the current situation and countermeasures of college English listening teaching in the new multimedia environment. In teaching, teachers must create a good learning environment for students. In this learning environment, students carry out learning through independent inquiry and cooperative learning, and students are in a dominant position in the learning process; teachers should promote and supervise the development of students. Therefore, multimedia technology has created a real learning situation for English teaching, prompting students to give full play to their subjective initiative. Multimedia technology can realistically simulate various real situations and things, visually provide students with examples, and prompt students to quickly grasp knowledge and apply it in real life. First of all, this research aims to explore the effectiveness of the theory in teaching by applying multimedia to actual listening teaching, enrich the content of listening teaching, and provide a certain degree of reference for actual teaching. Second, through the experimental data and research results of this study, it is proved whether multimedia is better than the existing listening teaching mode, and it is verified whether the method can improve the listening comprehension ability of students to a certain extent. The individual scores of the subjects’ listening tests have been significantly improved, from the initial scores of 52.4% and 53.1% to 70% and 73%. Multimedia teaching can effectively stimulate learners’ interest in learning, enrich teaching methods, and improve learning effects, which has become one of the hotspots in educational research. For English teaching that pays great attention to practical application, listening teaching is the most basic and most important link in the whole teaching system. This research is helpful to promote the development of college English multimedia listening teaching.
