Abstract:Experimental study and thermal elastic-plastic finite element method( FEM) of plate surfacing were carried out for 304L stainless steel, and rationality of assumed material properties under high temperature in calculation was verified by consistency of experimental results and numerical simulation results. On this basis, thermal elastic-plastic FEM was applied to welding of dome and cylinder shell of independent liquid tank of 304L stainless steel LNG carrier, and structural welding deformation was predicted successfully.
Effect of Welding Defects on Mechanical Properties of Welded Joints Subjected to Temperature

Abstract:Welding defects negatively affect the safety of steel structures. In fire, the steel connections with welding defects would fracture prematurely that cause the structure lose their fire resistance. However, the knowledge of effects of welding defects on welding connections at elevated temperature are still limit. This paper conducted steady-state tensile tests on butt welded specimens with artificial defects to investigate the effect of defects on the mechanical properties of butt welding at high temperatures. These effects on the evolution law of stress and strain, fracture strengths and extension abilities were discussed. The results show that the stress concentration caused by the defects in the welding zone reduced the yield strengths of the weldments at high-temperature, and the stress concentration induced brittle fracture occurring at the welding zone at high temperature with low levels and produced different failure modes. The extension abilities of the weldments at different temperatures were influenced by the defect levels significantly.
The Corrosion Resistance of 0cr19ni9 Stainless Steel Arc Welding Joints with and Without Arc Surface Melting

Abstract:In order to improve the corrosion resistance of stainless steel welded joints, thin surface melted layers with refined microstructure were produced on 0Cr19Ni9 stainless steel arc welding joints by micro-plasma arc surface melting (MASM). The arc surface treatment changed the anodic polarization behaviour in 1 N H2SO4 solution. The polarization tests showed that for the as-welded joint both the heat-affected zone and the weld metal decreased in resistance to corrosion compared with the as-received parent material while for the micro-plasma arc surface melted joint the corrosion resistance increased significantly. This increase in corrosion resistance as a result of MASM is attributed to rapid solidification of the melted layer. Rapid solidification of the melted layer refines the microstructure, decreases microsegregation, and inhibits the precipitation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries.

Abstract:This subject was raised by an automotive company. Based on the welding design on the curved surface, the effect of prior deformation on the weld structure was studied. Metal active-gas welding was used on the T-joint and pre-deformed plates of austenitic stainless steel 304L to find the proper welding parameters and observe the effect of prior deformation on the microstructure. The proper parameters acquired are: the speed of the torch is 4mm/s, the speed of delivery of welding wire is 2. 5m/min and the voltage is 17V. In the T-joint and pre-deformed joint, the weld toes are in the zone with strain of 0 % and 30%. In the pre-deformed welding specimen, it was observed that the fusion zone and partially melted zone are narrowed, carbide precipitation and ferrites are found less. In all, the microstructure in the pre-deformed weld joints on 304L is more uniform.

Abstract:Aimig at butt-welded Q235A steel sheet with the thickness of 5mm,a compared study on the welding deformation of double arc welding(DSAW),pulse double arc welding and vibratory stress relief(VSR) assistant welding was performed.The influence of the distance between two arcs of double arc welding(DSAW),pulse welding and vibratory stress relief(VSR) assistant welding on the deformation of MAG welding were discussed.The vibratory stress relief assistant pulse double arc welding can decrease the deformation to a certain extent,which has guiding significance for the optimization of welding parameters and welding deformation control of steel sheet.

Abstract:Pitting initiation mechanism of different areas of welded joints 321 stainless steel was clarified through potentiostatic pulse technique tests. Inclusions were found to be the main cause of pitting in the parent metal. However, δ-ferrite became the main pitting inducer of the fusion zone due to the inclusion elimination in welding process. The thick lathy δ-ferrite and the resulting Cr-depleted regions in tungsten inert gas welding fusion zone reduced the pitting resistance. The δ-ferrite in the fusion zone of electron beam welded joint was fine and evenly distributed, thus the fusion zone showed excellent pitting resistance.

Abstract:With the improvement of the strength of stainless steel, the proportion of stainless steel used for structural components has increased significantly, and the welding problem has become increasingly important. In this study, the microstructure features of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) welded duplex stainless steel (DSS) before and after deformation were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and nanoindentation. The results show that base metal (BM) consists of bimodal ferrite grains and fine austenite grains while weld zone (WZ) features fine acicular austenite grains scatter between irregularly shaped ferrite. Coarse equiaxed ferrite grains were observed in heat affected zone (HAZ) which have a relatively poor capacity for dislocation multiplication and storage. The appropriate distribution of fine delta-ferrite and gamma-austenite and almost no precipitate together guarantee the high yield strength (768.6 MPa), ultimate tensile strength (935 MPa), and enough plasticity (total elongation 32.6%) for the welded DSS. Fractography presents that welded DSS is in ductile rupture mode composed of various dimple patterns in the different regions. The drop in the elongation of welded DSS is attributed to the weakened deformation coordination involving dislo-cation slipping and multiplication. Investigating the microstructure origin related to the mechanical properties of welded joint may provide ideas for improving the welding process from the microstructure design level.

Abstract:Microstructure of the heat affected zone (HAZ) of a 308L-316L stainless steel (SS) weld joint and its corrosion behavior in high temperature water were studied. Peak of the residual strain was observed to approach to the fusion boundary in the HAZ while the strain increased from the top to root areas of the HAZ. The root area of the HAZ shows a lower corrosion resistance in high temperature water than the top and middle areas of the HAZ. This is attributed to a higher level of residual strain in association with a higher density of tangled dislocations in the top area of the HAZ. The results suggest that the residual strain in the HAZ could also promote the SCC through its effect on corrosion, in addition to that on the local microstructure and mechanical property of the steel.

Abstract:The welding of the AP1000 Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) casing and Steam Generator (SG) is an important issue to maintain the integrity of pressure boundary. The position tolerance of pump casing nozzles after welding will directly affect the internal components of the main pump, as well as the on-site assembling processes. This article investigated the method of controlling deformations during welding (such as assembly alignment, groove design, welding process control, etc), in order to prevent excessive welding deformation and therefore extra discrepancies during pump casing positioning. In this paper, we have developed a welding process, which can allow the installations of AP1000 pump casings to meet all nuclear grade requirements.

Abstract:The effect of room temperature deformation on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of selective laser-melted (SLM) 316L steel in 0.9 wt.% NaCl medium was explored by electrochemical tests, microstructural analysis, and passive film characterization. The irregular evolution of corrosion behavior was first found in the deformed SLM 316L steel. The corrosion resistance of SLM 316L steel improved with increasing room temperature deformation level reached the maximum at 20% deformation, and then weakened with further increasing deformation below 40%. Microstructural analysis indicated that the deformation twins passed through the molten pool boundaries when the deformation was 20%, but not when the deformation was 40%. The dislocation density, Σ3, and low-angle grain boundaries increased slightly with increasing deformation below 20%, but they increased distinctly with deformation level greater than 20%. Besides, room temperature deformation modified the oxide content of the surface passive film, especially for the chromium oxide, which affected the corrosion resistance of passive film. Above results indicate that low room temperature deformation level of SLM 316L stainless steel is feasible to improve its corrosion resistance and optimize the passive film.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the main welding defects that frequently exist in piping and equipment and how to detect these defects without destroying the welds using Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods. Then, the sensitization of stainless steel weld, characterization, processing and structure properties of HAZ as well as weld metal will be discussed in details. Furthermore, this paper will illustrate the treatment of the weld decay by recovery of passivation film after welding which will be followed by prevention of intergranular corrosion or weld decay of SS using surface mechanical attrition treatment and all of these will be described with help of characterization techniques XRD, SEM, TEM and EPMA.

Abstract:Underwater wet welding of 316L stainless steel was performed with specially designed nickel-based tubular wire at shallow water. Microstructural observations showed that fully austenitic weld metal without cracks and pores was achieved by the nickel-base filler materials. The ultimate tensile strength of welded joints was 508MPa and the average elongation of the joints was up to 32%. The impact test results indicated that all specimens exhibited ductile fracture and Charpy impact toughness value of weld metal at 0°C was 159J/cm2. The average hardness of weld metal was 156HV. There was a sharp increase of hardness occurred in fusion zone due to more ferrite formation.
SCC on austenitic stainless steel welded structure due to poor welding quality

Abstract:316L stainless steel is a kind of material with good corrosion-resistance, but its properties of anti-SCC are considerably affected by assembling quality, especially by welding quality. The failure on the heat affected zone (HAZ) in a 316L stainless steel welding structure is analysed in the present paper. The results show that the failure is caused by SCC, and the bad welding quality is the basic reason. The way to improve the welding quality and prevent SCC is presented.

Abstract:Specimens of AISI 321 stainless steel (0Cr18Ni9Ti) of various martensite contents were prepared by the low temperature(-70 degrees C) elongation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron micrograph (TEM) techniques were used to study the phase transition process and its structure. The relationship between deformation-induced martensite and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of the steel in 42% (boiling) MgCl2 solution was investigated using the constant load SCC test with the normalized threshold values. The results reveal that when the alpha'-martensite content is less than 5% and also in the range of 15%-24%,the SCC susceptibility of this material decreases with the increase of alpha'-martensite content.However,when the alpha'-martensite content is in the rang of 5%-15% and more than 24%, the SCC susceptibility of this material increases with the increase of the alpha'-martensite content. The SCC fracture surface of the specimens exhibits a stepped fracture surface and transgranular stress corrosion fracture surface morphology.

Abstract:The new technology of welding with impacting rotation is put forward to decrease the wave-like deformation of the TC4 thin plate weldment. The thermal stress and strain are vital to understand the mechanism of controlling the wave-like deformation. In order to know the development of internal thermal stress and strain, finite element method is utilized for the stress and strain are difficult to be investigated by experimental methods during the welding process. Temperature field, thermal stress evolution and distortion of thin plate are compared with the test results such as weld thermal cycle, residual stress sectioning measurement, and the deflection of the thin plate respectively. By the finite element analysis and test results verification, the mechanism of the technology to control the wave-like deformation is brought forward, non-uniform thermal elastic strain between compressive plastic region and elastic extensive region is diminished by a certain amount of extensive plastic deformation by welding with impacting rotation process. ©2010 Editorial Board of CHINA WELDING.

Abstract:Pneumatic chipping hammer and ultrasonic impact peening were used to relieve the welding residual stress of 2205 duplex stainless steel by manual argon arc welding, and the influences of these mechanical shock treatment technologies on the residual stress, microstructure, and corro-sion resistance of the welding seam were studied. Results showed that after pneumatic chipping hammer or ultrasonic impact peening, a small amount of plastic deformation occurred in the welded joint of 2205 duplex stainless steel, which led to an increase in the dislocation density in the microstructure. Meanwhile, the stress state of the welded joint changed from the residual tensile stress to the residual compressive stress. The maximum residual compressive stress could reach −579 MPa. The combined action of the two effectively improved the corrosion resistance of the welded joint. Among them, the best overall effect was the ultrasonic impact peening tech-nology.

Abstract:Heat-resistant austenitic stainless steels are widely used in the final stages of superheater and reheater in in the new generation of fossil fuel power stations, due to their high creep strength. Similar weld joints, fabricated using gas tungsten arc welding, for connecting different components made of the heat resistant austenitic stainless steels usually suffer from premature failures at elevated temperature [1]. Experimental studies showed that cracks may nucleate in the heat affected zone or weld metal of the similar welded joints under service conditions. In order to reveal the physical origin of unexpected failures of the weld joints, a microstructure-based modelling work has been performed. Firstly, the microstructure of the welded joints was experimentally characterised, and then a representative weld microstructure model was digitally reconstructed using Electron-Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) and finite element techniques. The stressstrain behaviour of each weld region at different temperatures was identified using a combination of digital image correlation (DIC) techniques, uniaxial tensile and microindentation tests. Dislocation density-based crystal plasticity models [2] are then formulated and calibrated so as to describe the behaviour of each weld region. Crystal plasticity finite element simulations were carried out based on the generated weld microstructure model to study the heterogenous distribution of stress and strain at the grain level. Local damage initiation mechanisms were systematically analysed for different weld regions.

Abstract:Main structural components on crawler excavators are upper and carriage frames, boom, stick and bucket. The frames are important components of an excavator and the carriers of work attachment and travel mechanism. The structural components quality strongly influences work performances and operation life of an excavator. Thicknesses of steel plates on most structural component vary greatly so their welding parameters also changes tremendously. Main structural components are box structures so that welding distortion will be great if the process couldn't be controlled properly. Aiming at different welding deformation of structural components on compact excavators, methods to control welding distortion are suggested. They are negative distorting, welding with rigid fastening back to back and strict control on welding sequence. They not only reduce the workload to rectify welding distortion but also guarantee the quality of structural components so that the reliability and work life of basic machine are increased.

Abstract:In the process of deep-drawn strain test for CR 304 stainless steel plates,the strain distribution law in each area of the deep-drawn parts,the martensitic transformation analysis,wall thickness and history of hardness change are carefully studied through using martensitic transformation analysis method.Effect of properties of CR 304 stainless steel plates on strain distribution of users' water tanks with cracks are analyzed.Methods and improvement measures for determining dangerous positions of deep-drawn parts are put forth.

Abstract:The serious residual stress and distortion are the weld defects associated with welding thin plate structure of high strength aluminum alloys.By applying a longitudinal tensile stress less than yield strength of the material,the residual stress of the flat butt welding was analyzed by the ellipsoidal heat source model.The results show that it can improve the residual stress distribution of welded joint and the peak value of the residual stress reduced evidently.The greater the pre-stress,the lower the residual stress. So welding distortion reduced.The values of deflection between conventional welding and welding with pre-stress were compared.It is found that the deflection reduced with the increase of longitudinal pre-stress.The maximum deflection of thin plate decreased from 38 mm under the condition of conventional welding to 18 mm and 7 mm respectively when 0.5σs and 0.7σs were applied.The value decreased to 17% of that in conventional welding.The reliability of numerical simulation results is proved by the experimental results.
