Tissue Engineering Research in Stomatological Medical Field

Abstract:Tissue engineering efforts in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery are aimed at reconstruction and repair of oral－ maxillofacial tissue, for restoration of function, and for cosmetics. With the advances of both biomedical engineering science and dentistry, scientists, engineers and dentists are now working as a team to use biocompatible resorbable matrices and living cells or growth factors to fabricate scaffolds that, when delivered in vivo, can induce hard or soft tissue formation at a desired site. It has a potential, in the field of stomatology, to regenerate TMJ－ cartilage, alveolar bone, oral mucosa, maxillofacial skin, muscle, nerves, salivary glands, teeth and periodontium with the tissue engineering techniques. So the development of the tissue engineered cellular dental and maxillary implants has a bright future and will bring about a new era to the fields of oral－ maxillofacial surgery. The present article tried to introduce the International and domestic advances of the Tissue Engineering research in the fields of dentistry and oral－ maxillofacial surgery.
