Abstract:In the realm of English teaching, teacher talk stands as a pivotal instructional instrument, serving both as a vital tool for teachers and a primary conduit for knowledge input for students. Effective classroom instruction is intricately woven with the dynamic, two-way interaction between teachers and students, which is expertly guided by the teacher talk. While numerous scholars have delved into the exploration of teacher talk, there remains a dearth of research investigating the specific landscape of novice English teachers’ classroom talk, particularly within the framework of Walsh’s Self-Evaluation of Teacher Talk (SETT). This study addresses this gap by observing the classes of four novice English teachers in junior high schools based on Walsh’s SETT framework to meticulously examine the current state of novice middle school English teachers’ classroom discourse. The objective is to cultivate teachers’ reflective awareness regarding their own discourse in the classroom and enhance their capacity to critically evaluate its efficacy as well as elevating the overall effectiveness of English classroom interactions in the context of secondary education.

Abstract:Effective teacher discourse is critical in improving English as a foreign language (EFL) education, particularly in junior high schools in China, where students are at a crucial stage in their language development. As junior high school students are at a pivotal developmental stage, this research investigates the discourse patterns employed by novice and expert teachers to assess their impact on students' engagement and language acquisition. Despite the extensive research on teacher discourse in higher education, a significant gap remains regarding its application in compulsory primary education settings. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the current classroom discourse patterns of EFL teachers in junior high schools to identify the distinctions between novice and expert teachers and explore the factors contributing to these differences. This mixed-methods study includes qualitative and quantitative analyses. Verbatim transcriptions of six classes were used to create a corpus exceeding 20,000 words. The data were analysed using cross-tabulation in Excel and Chi-square tests in SPSS 22.0, complemented by semi-structured interviews with selected teachers. The theoretical framework is grounded in Long's（1996）interaction hypothesis, which underlines the significance of communication in facilitating language proficiency through meaningful interaction, and the analysis follows Sinclair and Coulthard's（1975）discourse patterns. The initiation-response-feedback (IRF) and initiation-response-0 (IR0) emerged as predominant patterns among both novice and expert teachers. Novice teachers predominantly relied on the basic IRF pattern, while expert teachers exhibited greater flexibility and more frequent use of variant patterns, such as IRFR, I[RnFn] and [InRn]F. Such adaptability among expert teachers creates a more interactive and engaging learning environment, thereby enhancing student participation and language acquisition. The study also identifies a novel variant structure, IRnF, used more frequently by expert teachers, underlining the benefits of group work in fostering teamwork and independent thinking. Expert teachers demonstrated a greater propensity to adapt their discourse strategies to foster a more production-oriented learning environment, which was the main factor driving the teachers' differing discourse patterns. This study significantly contributes to the analysis of teacher discourse in the junior high school EFL context, providing empirical evidence and practical insights that bridge the gap between theory and practice. By elucidating the distinct discourse practices of novice and expert teachers, this study offers valuable recommendations for teacher professional development and highlights the importance of employing varied and interactive discourse structures to improve EFL teaching effectiveness. The study also provides valuable insights for educators striving to improve their instructional practices and the language acquisition in EFL classrooms.

Abstract:In English classroom instruction, teacher talk is a critical role to impart comprehensible language to students and serves as a medium for the application of pedagogical strategies. The implementation of the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education requires junior high school English teachers to be more conscious of the ways in which their teaching incorporate emotional attitudes and values. Consequently, the analysis of excellent junior high school English teacher talk in terms of interpersonal function theory, proves instrumental for front-line teachers to reflect on their discourse regarding student emotion, teacher role, and the teacher-student relationships. This study endeavors to unravel the interpersonal significance embedded in teacher talk based on the mood system of the Systemic Functional Grammar model advanced by Halliday. And the research data are carefully collected through observing and recording classroom discourse of 5 distinguished junior high school English teachers in the 16th National Junior High School English Teaching Seminar. Based on the research findings, the study proposes pragmatic strategies aimed at refining teacher talk in order to foster an equitable and harmonious classroom atmosphere.

Abstract:Reading is not only one of the difficult problems for students, but also one of the most important teaching parts for teachers. 126 students in Xingfeng Jiudu Middle School were taken as the research objects, and their English reading learning was investigated by means of questionnaire survey, so as to find problems existing in junior English reading teaching. Based on the three characteristics of discourse reading: integrity, comprehensiveness and applicability, the paper analyzes junior English reading teaching strategies from the three aspects of pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. The research shows that under the guidance of discourse reading theory, using the method of discourse reading teaching is beneficial to stimulate students' interest in reading and improve their reading ability. For English teachers, it is also a good way to improve teaching efficiency and reduce teaching pressure.

Abstract:In China, due to the lack of a real language learning environment, the main place for students to contact English is the classroom. Therefore, teachers’ discourse in the classroom has an important impact on learners’ language acquisition. Specifically, on the one hand, teacher talk can organize and manage classroom teaching. On the other hand, it is conducive to students’ language input. At the same time, senior high school is a key period for students to learn English. The impact of excellent teacher talk on students’ language acquisition is beneficial. As a result, at this stage, it is vital to study teacher talk. Based on the input hypothesis proposed by Krashen and the interaction hypothesis proposed by Long, this article selects a senior teacher and her class in Zhengji senior high school in Jiangsu Province as the research object, and uses the method of naturalistic observation to observe and record the teacher’s discourse in the classroom. Then, through the analysis of the data, the current situation of English teachers’ classroom discourse in senior high schools is investigated in three ways in this thesis: the quantity of teacher talk, questioning methods and feedback methods, analyzes the existing problems, and tries to offer some sound counsel. Through research and analysis, this article draws the following conclusions: 1. Teachers are fully aware of the main role of students in classroom discourse, are changing the traditional teacher-centered teaching model, and strive to make students more involved in classroom activities. 2. Teachers should reasonably use the method of questioning in the classroom to combine display questions with referential questions, so as to cultivate students’ innovative thinking ability. 3. Teachers should use a variety of feedback methods to continuously stimulate students’ learning motivation and increase the number of possibilities for kids to develop language.

Abstract:The English Curriculum Standards for Ordinary High Schools puts forward that teaching should focus on the improvement of students' language ability. The interaction between teachers and students is an important part of the classroom and one of the most important ways to improve learners’ language ability. English teachers’ classroom discourse is an important medium for English teachers to organize classroom teaching and impart knowledge. Classroom turn-taking can reflect the fluency, quantity and style of classroom communication. Based on the theory of conversation analysis, this research takes one of the 15th National High School English High-Quality Classes as the research object, listening and speaking lessen as the research class type, and transcribes and analyzes classroom teaching video. Through the research, this research aims to find the types of teachers’ classroom feedback used frequently in classroom and the influence of teachers’ discourse pattern on students’ turn-taking. And the writer finds that teacher tends to use single positive feedback most frequently in classroom, and IRF discourse pattern is the major discourse structure in the classroom. So students have a little chance to get the turn from their teachers and most of the time the class is still dominated by the teacher,and students don’t need to open a new turn.
A Survey and Analysis of English Teachers’Classroom Discourse Repetition in High Schools

Abstract:Repetition plays an important role in discourse structure.In order to understand the current situation of discourse repetition in English class,the thesis adopted the method of sounds recording and then we transcribed them into written materials.Also,we analyzed the discourse repetition in English class from four dimensions.The results showed that the repetition of English teachers in senior high school is arbitrariness and simple.Therefore this thesis reveals that teachers focus on the inappropriate repetition of teachers,optimize teachers' discourse,and make the repetition scientifically and effectively,which contributes to efficient classroom teaching and students’ second language acquisition.

Abstract:This study employs the 13th National Junior High School English Demo Classes as a corpus for multimodal analysis using ELAN, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Its objective is to investigate the structural features of middle school English reading teaching, the utilization of modes, and the realization of the meaning system. The findings are as follows: English reading teaching in Demo Classes comprises eight steps and utilizes multimodality, wherein visual, actional, and auditory modes are extensively employed to execute teaching procedures. The realization of the meaning system relies on these modes themselves, as well as their reinforcement and complementarity.
A Study of Teacher Talk in Interactions in English Classes

Abstract:The success of teaching depends to a large extent on the way teachers talk and interactions that occur between teachers and students. And the happening of interaction is affected directly by ways of teacher talk. This study investigated ways of teacher talk preferred respectively by teachers and students. It was found that in initiating an interaction, invitation is the first preferred choice by both teachers and students, but the least employed one. Question was more preferred by teachers and the least preferred by students, but it is the mostly used one. Direction is not preferred by teachers but more used, and students prefer them to questions. In ways of follow up, when students produce no answer or an incorrect answer, teachers usually prefer ways of prompting, and this is what teachers really did in class. However, students prefer to be informed by the teacher. When students provide the expected answer, they still prefer to be commented, rather than being just simply acknowledged. Encouragement is always welcomed. It is suggested that teachers should pay attention to their language in the process of interactions with students, so as to provoke more interactions in class.

Abstract:In terms of English education, much research has been done on the combination of reading and writing, but there are relatively few studies on the combination of reading and speaking. In this study, the combination of reading and speaking in English through activities was expounded. The effect of this teaching mode was studied based on students’ understanding of the subject, practical application, and transfer of knowledge. The goal of this teaching mode is to develop students’ core literacy and to enable them to interpret and utilize text resources. With these as objectives, teachers can design lessons and evaluations that require students to verbally explain what they understand after reading lessons and guide students in a stepwise manner, from superficial text understanding to in-depth understanding and eventually to thinking beyond text learning, so as to promote the integration and development of students’ language skills, cultural awareness, thinking, and learning ability.

Abstract:English has always been an essential part of junior high school curriculum. Improving students’ reading ability is not only the purpose of learning English for junior middle school students, but also an important means to acquire new knowledge. However, reading as one of the four basic skills required by the English course often keep students from getting high marks in the middle of the exam, although they took lots of time to read. This paper emphasizes the importance of English reading in junior middle school and analyzes the current situations and problems of students’ reading. It introduces the theories of reading and reading comprehension, discourse and discourse analysis, and the relationship between reading and discourse. The author puts forward some measures to improve the reading ability of students. There are many researches on discourse analysis about university, but the research is less involved in the secondary school, and the study of reading comprehension in junior middle school is even rarer. Therefore, the author thinks that it is very necessary to improve the discourse ability of junior high school students.

Abstract:EFL classroom teaching in China, no matter whether it is traditional one or a flipped one, is a dynamic communicative process by using English with the aim of learning it. The interactive discourse between the teacher and the student has its own pragmatic functions, especially the feedback given by the teachers which may influence the teaching and learning efficiency. In order to provide appropriate investigation resources, a corpus of 128,223 words with 36.65 hour-2199 minute real audiovisual college EFL classroom teaching transcripts is built. Taking the data of the resources as supporting evidence, this paper analyzes the pragmatic functions of EFL classroom feedback discourse, and proposes certain pragmatic strategies of increasing interactivity, which has certain pedagogical implications for EFL classroom teaching.

Abstract:English is widely taught as a foreign language in China. However, the current situation of English teaching cannot keep pace with the requirements of the Senior High School Standards. The improvement of teaching quality has become the focus in the new era. This paper analyzes the situation of English teaching in Southwest China. A questionnaire-based survey indicates the typical problems, such as silent classes, lack of student-student interaction, and low quality of teacher-student interaction, which will impede the improvement of English teaching quality and hinder students to develop. The author suggests using interactive teaching in senior schools in China.
Comparing Discourse Behaviors of a High‐Rated and a Low‐Rated Chinese EFL Teacher: A Systemic Functional Perspective

Abstract:This case study compares the discourse behaviors of 2 Chinese teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), one rated high and one rated low by their respective students. The teachers were each audio-recorded for a total of 100 minutes during the 'text session' of an Intensive Reading course. Drawing on Yang's (2010) model of EFL classroom discourse developed within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, each teacher's class was transcribed and coded in terms of the teacher's choices of (a) ways of interacting with students, (b) kinds of information exchanged during interaction, and (c) contents of the information exchanged. All instances of the two teachers' choices were also analyzed quantitatively, which revealed their different discourse features. The high-rated teacher takes the floor most of the time but introduces engaging information that construes a friendly ambiance, while keeping a balance among text study, language study, and life-experience sharing. The low-rated teacher gives students more speaking opportunities but chooses disengaging information that construes a distant relationship, while devoting his class to language study. These discourse features are described in terms of meaning patterns that are realized in lexicogrammatical forms while construing specific contextual values. The findings are discussed in relation to students' perceptions of effective teaching, and implications for EFL teachers' performance in classroom interaction are explored.

Abstract:With the progress and development of society and the continuous advancement of curriculum standard reform, society has higher requirements for students’ English skills. The junior high school stage is the best time to cultivate students’ communication skills, however, junior high school English classes are currently still based on traditional teaching as the main teaching method, which only focuses on cultivating students’ reading and writing skills, thus neglecting the training of listening and speaking skills. Despite its evident benefits, the implementation of the task-based language teaching (TBLT) method in junior high school English communication classes is not without challenges. The current state of these classes reveals a significant gap in the integration of communicative tasks into the teaching process. This gap stems from a variety of factors, including the lack of appropriate resources, insufficient teacher training, and the deeply ingrained reliance on traditional teaching methods. This study will briefly explain the definition and characteristics of the task-based language teaching method, analyze the current situation of junior high school English communication classes, the difficulties of using TBLT in junior high school English classrooms, and the application methods of task-based teaching methods. The teaching method makes up for the shortcomings of English communication classes in junior high schools and improves the quality of teaching.
Study on the Discourse Optimization of English Classroom Teachers from the Perspective of Subject Core Literacy

Abstract:Subject core literacy is the key goal of English learning in the new era. As a medium of language and education, classroom discourse contains rich humanistic functions and plays an important role in the cultivation of core literacy. However, there are still many problems in the usage of classroom discourse, such as excessive quantity, mechanical repetition, single form of questioning and feedback, etc. These questions are not conducive to the development of the core quality of English subject. Therefore, this paper analyzes in detail the promotion effect of English teachers’ discourse with humanistic functions on students' language ability, cultural awareness, thinking quality and learning ability, and puts forward optimization suggestions on teacher consciousness, content extraction, question design and classroom feedback. This research will be used to improve the quality of classroom teaching discourse and provides some constructive ideas and methods for the cultivation of core literacy of English subject.

Abstract:With the rapid development of society, people's attention to the problems of junior high school English education is grad-ually increasing. Relatively speaking, the lesson is a relatively new means of education, attaching great importance by the whole so-ciety. In traditional teaching mode, the teacher is the leader of teaching, and students passively study. As time goes by, studentswill lose enthusiasm and passion to learn English. Micro class can better stimulate students' interest in learning, let students partic-ipate in English teaching, give full play to the main body status of students' learning, and improve the efficiency of English teach-ing. The construction of micro lesson puts forward higher requirements to junior middle school English teachers, so teachersshould constantly improve their professional level and comprehensive quality, to better meet the demands of students' learning.
