Abstract:Two new organically templated zinc phosphites, [tmpip]0.5[Zn2(HPO3)2(H2PO3)] (1) and [dmdabco][Zn3(HPO3)4]·(H2O) (2), have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions, where tmpip=N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-piperazinium and dmdabco=N,N′-dimethyl-1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane. Note that the templating agents tmpip2+ and dmdabco2+ originated from in situ N-methylation transformations between CH3OH solvent and corresponding cyclic aliphatic amine precursors, i.e. piperazine, 1-methylpiperazine or 1,4-dimethylpiperazine in 1, and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane in 2. Distinct from conventional Eschweiler–Clarke methylation with excess formic acid and formaldehyde, such direct methylation transformation from methanol molecules is unique. Compound 1 consists of ZnO4 tetrahedra, HPO3 and HPO2(OH) pseudopyramids, exhibiting a complex double layered structure with 12-ring windows. Compound 2 is constructed from strictly alternating ZnO4 tetrahedra and HPO3 pseudopyramids, and possesses a (3,4)-connected interrupted architecture with intersecting 8- and 12-ring channels.

Abstract:From 1-D to 3-D zinc coordination polymers based on multifunctional flexible 4-(1,2,4-triazole-methylene)-benzonitrile (tzbt), {[Zn(tzbt)(2)(bdc)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (1), [Zn(tzbc)(2)](n) (2), and [Zn(bpdc)(H2O)](n) (3) (bdc = 1,4-benze-nedicarboxylic acid, tzbc = 4-(1,2,4-triazole-methylene)-benzoic acid, bpdc = 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid), were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The tzbt was synthesized by N-alkylation and hydrolyzed in situ to produce tzbc (in 2). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that 1 displays 1-D wave-like chains based on [Zn(bdc)](n). 2 is a chiral twofold interpenetrating 2-D architecture constructed with "V"-shaped tzbc. 3 is a 3-D chiral compound constructed from achiral H(2)bpdc with right-handed helical chains. 1-3 display stable blue-emitting luminescence with emission maxima ranging from 383 to 410 nm, depending on ligand-centered pi*->pi transitions. The effects of different polarity solvents and temperature on luminescence are discussed. TGA and VT-XPRD reveal that 2 has thermal stability to 360 degrees C.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:Two new organically templated zinc phosphites, [H2dmpip][Zn3(HPO3)4] (1) and [HMedmpip][Zn3(HPO3)4] (2), where dmpip=2,6-dimethyl-piperazine and Medmpip=N-methyl-2,6-dimethyl-piperazinium, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Note that the new Medmpip2+ template in 2 is generated from in situ N-methylation reaction between CH3OH and the dmpip amine precursor, which is used to serve as template in 1. Such direct N-methylation transformation is unique, and quite different from conventional Eschweiler–Clarke methylation in which an excess of formic acid and formaldehyde was required. Both compounds are constructed from strictly alternating ZnO4 and HPO3 units, and possess different (3,4)-connected interrupted frameworks with intersecting 8-, 10- and 12-ring channels (for 1), and 8-, 12-ring channels (for 2), respectively. The occurrence of helical channels in the open structure of 1, and fascinating hydrogen-bonded helices between the host inorganic chains and guest organic templates are also noteworthy.

Abstract:Two three-dimensional open-framework zinc phosphites with the same organically templated, [H2pip][Zn3(HPO3)4(H2O)2] (1) and K[H2pip]0.5[Zn3(HPO3)4] (2) (pip=piperazine), have been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by IR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffractions. Compound 1 consists of ZnO4 tetrahedra, [HPO3] pseudopyramids and [ZnO4(H2O)2] octahedra, which are linked through their vertexes to generate three-dimensional architecture with intersecting 8-membered channels along the [100], [001] and [101] directions. Compound 2 is constructed from strictly alternating ZnO4 tetrahedra and [HPO3] pseudopyramids, and exhibits (3,4)-connected inorganic framework with 8-, and 12-membered channels, in which the K+ and diprotonated H2pip2+ extra-framework cations reside, respectively. The coexistence of inorganic K+ and organic piperazine mixed templates in the structure is unique and, to the best of our knowledge, firstly observed in metal-phosphite materials. In addition, the participation of left-handed and right-handed helical chains in construction of the puckered 4.82 sheet structure in 2 is also noteworthy.

Abstract:By using flexible 1,2-bis(2-aminoethoxy)ethane (BAEOE) as a pillaring ligand, a new inorganic–organic hybrid open-framework zinc phosphite, [C6N2O2H16][Zn(HPO3)]2 (1), has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by IR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffractions. The structure of 1 consists of neutral layers of zinc phosphite which are further pillared through linear BAEOE ligands, generating a 3D framework with unusual (3, 4)-connected dmc topology. The participation of left-handed and right-handed helical chains in the construction of puckered sheet structure with 4.82-net is also noteworthy.

Abstract:Protic ionic liquids (PILs) are a subset of ionic liquids, which are cost-effective and easily produced through the combination of a Bronsted acid and a Bronsted base. In this work, we have taken an organic amine, triethylenetetramine (TETA), as an example to form a PIL with acetic acid, and described the ionothermal synthesis of zinc phosphate in a PIL for the first time. Two crystalline zinc phosphate materials, ZnPO-TETA1 and ZnPO-TETA2, were successfully produced by using this PIL as the solvent and template. Powder X-ray diffraction, SEM, TGA and CHN analysis were used to characterize the two materials. The two crystalline solids are very similar to two known zinc phosphates. ZnPO-TETA1 has an open-framework and ZnPO-TETA2 has a ladder structure, and the TETA cation was incorporated into their final structure to balance the framework negative charge. It was found that the P/Zn ratio is crucial to the phase selectivity in a protic ionic liquid. Low P/Zn ratios favor the structure with higher dimensions and high P/Zn ratios tend to form the lower dimensional structures.

Abstract:A series of syntheses in the HF–ZrO2–P2O5–pyridine–H2O system have been performed in an attempt to synthesize novel materials with open zirconium phosphate framework structures. One of the resulting products, designated ZrPOF–pyr (∣(C5H6N)4(H2O)2∣[Zr12P16O60(OH)4F8]), has been characterized by XRD, SEM and TG-DTA, and its crystal structure determined from powder diffraction data using direct methods (Pnnm, a=19.1595(2)Å, b=15.1428(1)Å, c=6.61804(6)Å). The framework structure, consisting of corner sharing ZrO6, ZrO5F, ZrO4F2 octahedra and PO4 and PO3OH tetrahedra, proved to be identical to that of ∣(C5H16N2)2(H2O)6∣[Zr12P16O60(OH)4F8], which had been reported previously. In both structures, the terminal P–OH group is disordered. The non-framework species (pyridinium ion and water molecule) could be located in the channels of the framework. Structure solution was also performed using a charge-flipping algorithm, which makes no symmetry assumptions, to verify that the P–OH disorder is inherent to the material and not a result of an incorrectly assumed space group. The phase is thermally stable to 450°C, but transforms to another phase at higher temperatures.
Three Novel Isomeric Zinc Metal-Organic Frameworks from a Tetracarboxylate Linker.

Abstract:Three porous supramolecular isomers (IZE-1, IZE-2, and IZE-3) with the same framework component [Zn(2)(EBTC)(H(2)O)(2)] (EBTC = 1,1'-ethynebenzene-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylate) were successfully constructed by finely tuning the reaction condition. Although both IZE-1 and IZE-2 are constructed from the linear EBTC subunits and one kind of regular [Zn(2)(CO(2))(4)] paddlewheels, their frameworks exhibit two different (3,4)-c net of fof (sqc1575) and sqc1572, respectively, resulting in cavities with different size and shape. However, as for isomer IZE-3, the EBTC ligands are bent and one-half of the [Zn(2)(CO(2))(4)] paddlewheels are distorted, leading to a novel (3,4,4)-c hyx net with point symbol (6.7(2))(4)(6(2).8(2).10(2))(7(2).8(2).11(2)) and vertex symbol (6.7.7)(4)(7(2).7(2).8.8.12.12)(6.6.8.8.10(2).10(2)). Quantum chemical calculations by DFT indicate that the three isomers have very close thermodynamic stabilities, which may explain that subtle condition change leads to variation of the frameworks. Further theoretical semiempirical investigation on the interactions between solvent molecules and compounds shows different hydrogen binding patterns in good agreement with the experimental observations. Furthermore, they exhibit good solid-state luminescence properties with long lifetime.

Abstract:Three zinc phosphonocarboxylates, Zn2(pbc)2 x Hdma x H3O x 2 H2O (1), Zn(pbc) x Hdma (2), and Zn4.5(pbc)3(OH)(H2O)0.5 x Hdma (3) (H3pbc = 4-phosphonobenzoic acid, dma = dimethylamine) were synthesized by the mixed solvothermal reaction of Zn(Ac)2 x 2 H2O and 4-phosphonobenzoic acid in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and water. The zigzag and ladderlike chains completely constructed by triply fused 4-membered rings (denoted SBU-1) are linked by the organic moieties to form the 3D zeolite-like structure 1 and the layered structure 2, respectively. As for structure 3, a new second building unit (SBU-2) formed by the inset of the [Zn3O12] trimer into the 4-membered ring as well as SBU-1 is observed. The connections between the two types of SBUs lead to a "zinc phosphate" layer, which is linked by the organic groups to generate a 3D pillar-layered structure. Both solution-mediated and solid-state transformations of 1 to 2 and 3 were observed. A possible mechanism for the transformation is proposed. Gas sorption studies show that 1 has accessible pores for methanol and water and exhibits size selectivity for alcohols.

Abstract:A new zincophosphate [C6N4H22][ZnPO4]4 1 has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallized in the triclinic space group P1 with a=9.784(2) Å, b=10.074(2) Å, c=8.0573(16) Å, α=121.62(3)°, β=119.20(3)°, γ=98.37(3)°, V=496.96(17) Å3, Z=1. Refinement gave R1=0.0651, wR2=0.1476 for observed data. The zinc and phosphorous atoms are tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen atoms with a Zn to P ratio of 1. The structure of 1 is constructed by strictly alternating linking of ZnO4 and PO4 with four-membered rings as the secondary building units. The four-membered rings are further connected in three styles: sharing zinc atoms to form a chain structure, connected using vertices to form an undulating chain, and a 4–1 connection. These connections give a complex three-dimensional eight-membered ring channel system.

Abstract:Two zinc-phosphites modified by a rigid amine 3,5-bis(imidazole-1-yl)pyridine (BIP), [Zn-2(HPO3)(2)(BIP)]H2O (1) and [Zn-3(HPO3)(3)(BIP)(H2O)]H2O (2), were solvothermally prepared. Compound 1 possesses a zincophosphite layer decorated by BIP moieties via coordinating to intralayer Zn(ii) ions. Compound 2 features a 3D frame with a pillar-layer structure, in which the organic BIP pillars the inorganic zincophosphite layer via coordinating to interlayer Zn(ii) ions. The structural diversity from a 2D layer to a 3D frame was mainly attributable to the different bridging modes of BIP in the process of assembly. Their temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties have also been studied.

Abstract:Two novel zirconium phosphate compounds, [(C9H8N)(4)(H2O)(4)][Zr8P12O40(OH)(8)F-8] and [(C9H8N)(2)][Zr2P2O6-(OH)(4)F-4], designated as ZrPOF-Q1 and ZrPOF-Q2, respectively, have been synthesized hydrothermally in the presence of quinoline and HF and characterized by elemental and thermogravimetric analyses, UV-vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Their crystal structures were determined from powder X-ray diffraction data using a charge-flipping algorithm. The ZrPOF-Q1 structure [P (1) over bar, a=10.7567(1) angstrom, b=13.8502(1) angstrom, c=14.8995(1) angstrom, alpha= 109.6(1)degrees, beta=101.1(1)degrees, and gamma=100.5(1)degrees] consists of zirconium phosphate layers with quinolinium ions in between. The layers are unusual in that isolated ZrO2F4 Octahedra are anchored on both sides of the layer and protrude into the interlayer space. The ZrPOF-Q2 structure [P (1) over bar, a=7.7058(1) angstrom, b=12.3547(1) angstrom, c=6.5851(1) angstrom, alpha=97.0(1)degrees, beta = 89.7(1)degrees, and gamma=101.9(1)degrees] consists of zirconium phosphate chains with an unusual Zr/P ratio of 1.0, interspersed with quinolinium ions. Both materials are stable up to 250 degrees C and exhibit interesting photoluminescence in the UV-vis spectral region. This is attributed to the protonated quinoline molecules, which are an integral part of both structures.

Abstract:Six zinc phosphonocarboxylate hybrid materials, namely, Zn-2(pbC)(2)center dot 2Hdma center dot DMF center dot H2O (1), Zn-2(pbc)(2)center dot H(2)teta center dot H2O (2), Zn(pbc) center dot H3O (3), Zn-4(pbc)(3) center dot HTEA (4), Zn-3(pbc)(2)(en)(2) (5), and Zn-3(pbc)(2)(H2O) (6) (H(3)pbc = 4-phosphono-benzoic acid, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, dma = dimethylamine, teta = triethylene tetramine, TEA = triethylamine, en = ethylenediamine) have been synthesized using organic amines as structure-directing agents under mixed-solvothermal condition. These new compounds have been characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction together with infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). In structures I and 2, the double crankshaft chains constructed by the corner-sharing of ZnO4 and CPO3 tetrahedra are cross-linked by the organic moieties of the ligands into three-dimensional (3-D) structures with GIS (gismondine) and GIS-related zeolite topologies. In structure 3, the connectivity between ZnO4 and CPO3 results in inorganic (4.6.12) sheets, which are pillared by the benzoic acid group -C6H5-COO- into a 3-D open framework structure with zeolitic SOD (sodalite) topology. Structures 4-6 are pillar-layered structures where the Zn-O-P layers show different configuration due to the directing effect from different organic amines and solvents employed during the synthesis. The results show that the amines and organic solvents acting as structure-directing agents along with control of reaction condition are effective in achieving varieties of zinc phosphonocarboxylate structures.

The occurrence of extra-large tubular channels constructed by the concatenation of 24- and 30-ring windows along the [001] direction in the two structures is very unusual in known extra-large micropore materials. Abstract:Two novel phosphonate compounds, (Cu2CuII)-Cu-I[(3-C5H4N)CH(OH)PO3](2) (1) and Zn[(3-C5H4N)CH(OH)PO3] ( 2), have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions of the corresponding metal salts with [hydroxy(3-pyridyl)methyl]phosphonic acid. Compound 1 contains inorganic chains made up of (CuO4)-O-II planes and CPO3 tetrahedra through corner sharing. These chains are connected by (CuON)-O-I units through pyridine rings, forming a 3D open framework structure. Compound 2 adopts a new type of pillared layered structure. The inorganic layer contains 8- and 16-membered rings made up of ZnO3N and CPO3 tetrahedra. Pyridine rings are fixed between the inorganic layers through covalent bonds. The magnetic study shows that weak ferromagnetic interactions are mediated between magnetic centers in compound 1.

Abstract:Two isostructural zinc phosphonates [Zn(H2O)6][Zn8(OOCC6H4PO3)6(4,4′-bipy)] (1) and (dabcoH)2[Zn8(OOCC6H4PO3)6]·6H2O (2) (dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) have been obtained by hydrothermal reactions of zinc sulfate and 4-carboxyphenylphosphonic acid in the presence of additional organic ligands 4,4′-bipyridine and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, respectively. Both show pillared layered open framework structures. The inorganic layers are of particular interest in which the highly symmetric tetranuclear clusters, composed of corner-sharing {ZnO4} and {ZnO3N} tetrahedra, are linked by {CPO3} tetrahedra through corner-sharing, forming an inorganic layer containing large 12-membered windows. The [Zn(H2O)6]2+ cations (for 1) or lattice water (for 2) reside in the cavities generated by the 12-membered windows and the organic pillars.
