Abstract:Enantioselective hydrogenation of ethyl 2-oxo-4-phenylbutyrate to ethyl (R)-2-hydroxy-4-phenyl- bu-tyrate on Pt/γ-Al2O3 modified by 10,11-dihydrocinchonidine was studied by investigating the influences of the amount of modifier, initial concentration of reactant, pressure and temperature on conversion and enantiometric excess in a stirred autoclave and the effects of the liquid velocity, gas velocity, modifier concentration and various catalytic beds in a trickle-bed reactor. The maximum optical yields were about 50% and 60% in the two types of reactors, respectively. It was assumed that the total hydrogenation rate included the reaction rates over the unmodified and modified active sites on platinum surface and a kinetic model, which fitted the experimental data well in autoclave, was obtained. A simplified plug-flow model was proposed to describe the bed average efficiency of trickle-bed reactor.
Factors Controlling Adsorption Equilibria from Solution Onto Solid Surfaces: the Uptake of Cinchona Alkaloids on Platinum Surfaces

Abstract:The room-temperature adsorption of four closely related cinchona alkaloids and three reference quinoline-based compounds from CCl4 solutions onto a polycrystalline platinum surface was characterized by in situ reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). The adsorption equilibrium constants (Kads) were found to follow the sequence cinchonine > quinidine > cinchonidine > quinine > 6-methoxyquinoline > lepidine > quinoline. Some of this ordering can be explained by differences in solubility, but quinidine displays a much larger Kads than expected on the basis of its large relative solubility; bonding to the surface must also play a role in determining its behavior. It was determined that each alkaloid binds differently on Pt at saturation coverages. While the quinoline ring of cinchonidine tilts along its long axis to optimize pi-pi intermolecular interactions, in cinchonine it tilts along the short axis and bonds through the lone electron pair of the nitrogen atom instead, and both quinine and quinidine exhibit additional bonding via the methoxy oxygen atom at intermediate concentrations. Perhaps a more surprising result from this work is the fact that cinchonine displays a higher Kads than cinchonidine, quinine, or quinidine even though, according to previous work, it can be easily displaced from the surface by any of those other cinchona alkaloids. A full explanation of these observations requires consideration of the solvent above the adsorbed species.

Abstract:The physico-chemical properties of cinchona alkaloids have been characterized in connection to their use for catalytic enantioselective conversions. Adding to the previous identification of their active site at the nitrogen atom in the quinuclidine ring and the chiral environment provided by the carbon centers of the neighboring alcohol linker, an argument is made here for the importance of the adoption of certain rotational conformations by those cinchona alkaloids in optimizing their chiral promotion. Because catalysis with cinchona alkaloids involves a liquid phase, there is a dynamic conformation isomerization process controlled by a number of factors having to do with the exact structure of the cinchona as well as with the nature of the solvent used and, in the case of heterogeneous catalysis, the presence of a solid surface. Solvents of intermediate polarity have been found to be the best for dissolving the cinchona, for establishing rapid adsorption equilibria with metal surfaces, and for promoting chiral catalysis. Protonation also leads to a dramatic change in performance, locking the cinchona molecule in a specific conformation held in place by the counter anion of the acid used, and modifying the chemical and biological activity of the system. Comparative studies with several cinchona indicate that molecular groups attached to peripheral positions also exert a great influence on the conformational and adsorption behavior of these molecules.
The Influence of Dissolved Gases on the Adsorption of Cinchonidine from Solution Onto Pt Surfaces: an in Situ Infrared Study

Abstract:The influence of different dissolved gases on the adsorption of cinchonidine from CCl4 Solutions onto polycrystalline platinum surfaces has been studied by in situ reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). It was observed that Ar, N-2, O-2, air, or CO2 neither enhances the adsorption of cinchonidine nor damages cinchonidine adlayers once they have formed on the surface. On the other hand, H-2 plays a unique role, initially facilitating the uptake of cinchonidine, but later removing some of the resulting adsorbed cinchonidine from the platinum surface. It was also found that CO is a strong inhibitor, significantly retarding the adsorption of cinchonidine. Adsorbed CO can be removed by H-2 dissolved in the cinchonidine solution, a process that also boosts the adsorption of cinchonidine. O-2 can remove the surface adsorbed CO as well, but without facilitating cinchonidine adsorption. The cleanliness of Pt surfaces at different stages of the experiment was probed by CO adsorption. Abstract:The adsorption of 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine (NEA) on platinum surfaces has been characterized by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) both under ultrahigh vacuum and in situ from liquid solutions. The main focus of this study was to identify the mechanism by which single enantiomers of NEA bestow chirality on the platinum surface. Evidence was acquired for both of the prevailing explanations available in the literature for the NEA behavior: formation of supramolecular chiral templates and complexation of individual modifiers with the reactant. Indeed, TPD titrations of NEA-modified Pt(111) using propylene oxide (PO) as a chiral probe point to a relative enhancement in the adsorption of one enantiomer over the other at intermediate NEA coverages, which is the behavior expected from the templating mechanism. However, a difference in adsorption energetics was also observed. Both the TPD and RAIRS data suggest possible interactions between the adsorbed NEA and adjacent PO that differ according to the relative chirality of the two compounds. The NEA uptake from solution displays additional enantioselectivity, in particular when the adsorption of enantiopure compounds is compared with that of racemic mixtures, and also points to possible adsorption changes induced by ethyl pyruvate, a common reactant in chiral hydrogenation processes.
Surface processes occurring on Rh/alumina during chiral modification by cinchonidine: an ATR-IR spectroscopy study

Abstract:Cinchona alkaloids are frequently used for chiral modification of supported noble metal catalysts employed in heterogeneous enantioselective hydrogenation. In order to gain molecular insight into the surface processes occurring at the metal/liquid interface, cinchonidine (CD) adsorption on vapor-deposited Rh/Al2O3 films has been studied in the presence of solvent and hydrogen by means of attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. The spectrum of CD adsorbed on Rh exhibited two dominant signals at 1593 and 1511 cm(-1), which are characteristic of a surface species having a quinoline ring tilted with respect to the metal. Interestingly, no adsorbed modifier in the flat geometry (quinoline parallel to the metal plane) was observed. During desorption, these signals vanished, and a new prominent signal appeared at 1601 cm(-1) which belongs to a species with the quinoline ring hydrogenated on the heteroaromatic side. Concentration-dependent experiments and the reversibility of the observed phenomenon indicate that CD was readily hydrogenated to 1',2',3',4',10,11-hexahydrocinchonidine (CDH(6)) on Rh. The ATR-IR spectra also reveal that the flat species was indeed immediately hydrogenated when CD was provided from solution, and the only visible adsorbed species was the tilted species, which displaced the hydrogenation product from the metal surface. In the absence of dissolved CD, during desorption, the tilted species was converted to the flat species and rapidly hydrogenated. The hydrogenation product was stable on the metal surface only in the absence of CD. Therefore, the adsorption strength of the different species is as follows: flat >> tilted > CDH(6). Evidence for the formation of the flat species and its role as an intermediate to the hydrogenation product is given by an experiment in which CD was adsorbed in the absence of dissolved hydrogen after surface cleaning. The adsorption and hydrogenation of CD on Rh deviate significantly from that observed earlier on Pt and Pd under similar conditions, where the flat species could be observed even in the presence of hydrogen. This difference is attributed to the weaker interaction and lower hydrogenation rate occurring on Pt and Pd.
In Situ Characterization of Adsorbates in Solid−Liquid Interfaces by Reflection−Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:A cell has been designed for the in situ characterization of catalytic intermediates adsorbed at liquid-solid interfaces by single-reflection infrared spectroscopy. The design of our cell is based on previous setups used for the study of electrochemical systems, and consists of a cylindrical Teflon body terminated by a calcium fluoride prism cut in a trapezoidal shape with two faces beveled to 60degrees to let the infrared beam in and out of the cell on one end and by a polished platinum disk (the solid sample) mounted on a retractable rod on the other. The solid sample is cleaned by repeated electrochemical oxidation-reduction cycles using KClO4, HClO4, or H2SO4 electrolytes, and a thin liquid film is then trapped between the two surfaces for the liquid-solid adsorption studies. The performance of this cell was first tested by studies on the adsorption of carbon monoxide from 1.0 M H2SO4 solutions. Significant signals were detected for the adsorbed CO, comparable to those seen under vacuum or under high pressures of CO gas, and also to data reported previously. A more detailed characterization of our experimental setup was carried out with cinchona alkaloids. Discrimination between adsorbed and dissolved species was accomplished by dividing spectra obtained with p- and s-polarized light, and was corroborated by a number of tests, including a variation in the liquid film thickness and the nature of the adsorbing surface. The importance of the in situ characterization was assessed by comparing spectra for quinoline deposited under vacuum versus adsorbed from a carbon tetrachloride solution.

Adsorption of platinum(IV) and palladium(II) from aqueous solution by thiourea-modified chitosan microspheres.

Abstract:The chitosan microparticles were prepared using the inverse phase emulsion dispersion method and modified with thiourea (TCS). TCS was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, sulfur elemental analysis, specific surface area and pore diameter. The effects of various parameters, such as pH, contact time, initial concentration and temperature, on the adsorption of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) by TCS were investigated. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity was found at pH 2.0 for both Pt(IV) and Pd(II). TCS can selectively adsorb Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from binary mixtures with Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II). The adsorption reaction followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating the main adsorption mechanism of chemical adsorption. The isotherm adsorption equilibrium was well described by Langmuir isotherms with the maximum adsorption capacity of 129.9mg/g for Pt(IV) and 112.4mg/g for Pd(II). The adsorption capacity of both Pt(IV) and Pd(II) decreased with temperature increasing. The negative values of enthalpy (ΔH°) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) indicate that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous in nature. The adsorbent was stable without loss of the adsorption capacity up to at least 5 cycles and the desorption efficiencies were above 95% when 0.5M EDTA–0.5M H2SO4 eluent was used. The results also showed that the preconcentration factor for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was 196 and 172, respectively, and the recovery was found to be more than 97% for both precious metal ions.

Abstract:Chitosan microspheres were prepared by inverse phase emulsion dispersion method. Adsorption behavior of thiourea-modified chitosan microspheres(TCS) in adsorption of Pt4+ or Pd2+ especially from binary sail solution mixtures were investigated. TCS was characterized by means of SEM, FTIR and N2 adsorption-desorption. Particle size of TCS was about 10-30 μm and its specific surface area, average pore diameter and pore volume were 95.6 m2/g, 12.6 nm, and 0.298 cmVg, respectively. The maximum amount of adsorption occurred at pH about 2 of salt solution. The adsorptive kinetics follows pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, indicating the main adsorption mechanism of chemical adsorption. Adsorption isotherms were well described by Langmuir model and maximum adsorption amounts of Pt4+ and Pd2+ reach 129.87 mg/g and 112.36mg/g, respectively. In binary mixture adsorption TCS showed excellent selectivities to Pt4+ or Pd2+, thus it is possible for selective separation of either Pt4+ or Pd2+ from binary mixtures with one of the following Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+ and Ca2+ salt solution.
Theoretical-Study of Cn Chemisorbed on the Pd(111) Surface

Abstract:The chemisorption of CN on the Pd(111) surface has been studied by the DV-Xα and ASED-MO methods using cluster models. The binding energies and equilibrium geometries for several adsorption sites have been determined by the ASED-MO method. The results show that the center superposition site (hcp) with the CN axis parallel to the surface and to the [112] direction is the most stable site and the optimized height is equal to 1.51 Å. We also calculated the electronic structures with the DV-Xα method. In the total DOS curves for the equilibrium adsorption geometry, four peaks located at 8.77, 7.25, 6.02 and 5.09 eV below EF are found. They are determined to be the 4σ(a′), 1π(a′), 1π(a″ and 5σ(a′) levels respectively. The total charge transferred from the substrate to the CN is about 0.51 electrons, which is mainly in to the 5σ orbital.

Abstract:The adsorption from solution onto a Pt surface of 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine (1-NEA), a chiral modifier used to introduce enantioselectivity in catalytic hydrogenation reactions, as well as its subsequent chemical reactivity, was characterized by a combination of kinetic catalytic measurements, surface-science experiments, and quantum mechanics calculations. By using both 1H NMR and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry detection, it was determined that 1-NEA can undergo H-D exchange with D2 in solution when promoted by supported heterogeneous Pt catalysts. In situ infrared absorption spectroscopy studies at the solid–liquid interface afforded the detection of vibrational features indicative of the formation of N–D bonds, and quantum mechanics calculations helped with the peak assignment and provided evidence supporting an H-D exchange mechanism involving the formation of an intermediate-adsorbed protonated 1-NEA species. The reaction proved to be general, as it was observed with r- and s-1-NEA, r- and s-2-NEA, and cinchonine, and on Pt/SiO2 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. NEA adsorption and protonation through the amine N atom explain a number of reported but previously not fully understood observations and provide a way to envision the mechanism by which the NEA molecule bestows enantioselectivity to Pt hydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:Deposition of fluorene-1-carboxylic acid molecules on Cu(110) surface has been investigated by LEED and STM. By saturating the surface with one monolayer, a (4 x 4) pg ordered structure is formed judged from the LEED pattern. STM image shows that the ordered structure is formed in small locally areas. STM results indicate that the molecular aromatic plane of FC-1 is parallel to the substrate. First-principle calculations determined the favorable adsorption site. The adsorption structure presents a chiral property. Abstract:The chemisorption of specific optically active compounds on metal surfaces can create catalytically active chirality transfer sites. However, the mechanism through which these sites bias the stereoselectivity of reactions (typically hydrogenations) is generally assumed to be so complex that continued progress in the area is uncertain. We show that the investigation of heterogeneous asymmetric induction with single-site resolution sufficient to distinguish stereochemical conformations at the submolecular level is finally accessible. A combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations reveals the stereodirecting forces governing preorganization into precise chiral modifier-substrate bimolecular surface complexes. The study shows that the chiral modifier induces prochiral switching on the surface and that different prochiral ratios prevail at different submolecular binding sites on the modifier at the reaction temperature.

Chiral selectivity of amino acid adsorption on chiral surfaces - the case of alanine on Pt

Abstract:We study the binding pattern of the amino acid alanine on the naturally chiral Pt surfaces Pt(531), Pt(321) and Pt(643). These surfaces are all vicinal to the {111} direction but have different local environments of their kink sites and are thus a model for realistic roughened Pt surfaces. Alanine has only a single methyl group attached to its chiral center, which makes the number of possible binding conformations computationally tractable. Additionally, only the amine and carboxyl group are expected to interact strongly with the Pt substrate. On Pt(531) we study the molecule in its pristine as well as its deprotonated form and find that the deprotonated one is more stable by 0.39 eV. Therefore, we study the molecule in its deprotonated form on Pt(321) and Pt(643). As expected, the oxygen and nitrogen atoms of the deprotonated molecule provide a local binding "tripod" and the most stable adsorption configurations optimize the interaction of this "tripod" with undercoordinated surface atoms. However, the interaction of the methyl group plays an important role: it induces significant chiral selectivity of about 60 meV on all surfaces. Hereby, the L-enantiomer adsorbs preferentially to the Pt(321)$^S$ and Pt(643)$^S$ surfaces while the D-enantiomer is more stable on Pt(531)$^S$. The binding energies increase with increasing surface density of kink sites, i.e. they are largest for Pt(531)$^S$ and smallest for Pt(643)$^S$.

Abstract:Chiral surfaces are an object of interest due to their application in catalysis, separation and sensors. Such surfaces can exhibit chirality on molecular or supramolecular level. Previously we have studied the thermodynamic features of adsorption on non-porous surfaces with supramolecular chirality. However, to apply them for enantiomer separation, the enantioselectivity and capacity should be greater. Porous adsorbents are promising for this purpose. In this work, the enantioselectivity of copper borophosphate LiCu 2 [BP 2 O 8 (OH) 2 ] was studied. This zeotype material was obtained by hydrothermal synthesis without any sources of chirality. Supramolecular chirality was achieved by spontaneous symmetry breaking according to Viedma ripening. XRD and SEM were used to prove the synthesis accuracy. Enantioselectivity during adsorption was studied using adsorption isotherms of α–pinene and limonene enantiomer analysis. The experimental isotherms were approximated by Langmuir, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Freundlich and Fowler-Guggenheim equations. A t-test was used to prove the reliability of the difference in enantiomer adsorption. The isosteric heats of adsorption were calculated from the adsorption isotherms. The data obtained have shown the ability of LiCu 2 [BP 2 O 8 (OH) 2 ] surface to recognize both α–pinene and limonene enantiomers. The molecules of α–pinenes adsorbed without pores, with the maximum enantioselectivity coefficient of 1.23 at 80 °C. Limonenes molecules adsorbed in pore volume as single molecules or 1D chains. This phenomenon was proved by analysis of isosteric heats. The enantioselectivity of copper borophosphate to limonenes and α–pinenes was similar. The capability of pores with supramolecular chirality (and without molecular chirality) to recognize enantiomers was discovered in this paper for the first time.
