Abstract:The life-cycle reliability of engineering structures was analyzed from a historic viewpoint.Review of historic failure accidents reveals that the structure reliability under ordinary loads and ordinary use purpose can be ensured by current design codes.However,there are still many things to be understood especially regarding structure reliability in construction/aging stages and even more things to be investigated regarding structure safety in some extraordinary conditions such as explosion,shock and fire.The state-of-the-art of these problems were reviewed,especially regarding reliability problems analyzed from the viewpoint of load-resistance distribution model,structure failure probability-(acceptable) target failure probability and sensitivity analysis-structure modification.Due to the difference of load-resistance distribution model and the target failure probability,the well-known load and resistance factor design(LRFD) method may not be an effective approach.

Abstract:Transportation infrastructure has been identified by the US Department of Homeland Security as one of sixteen critical infrastructure systems essential to the well-being of modern society. In this study, we propose a resilience-based framework for mitigating risk to road systems, considering both community and regional scales. We utilize recent developments in modern network theory to introduce a novel indicator based on system reliability and network connectivity to measure resilience and resilience improvement of a road transportation network. Our formulation systematically integrates the network topology, redundancy level, traffic patterns, and functionality during a community’s post-disaster recovery period, includes structural reliability (failure probability) of individual bridges in the network, and permits risk mitigation alternatives for improving transportation network resilience to be compared on a common basis. We propose a project ranking mechanism for identifying and prioritizing bridge maintenance or retrofit projects that are critical for effective pre-disaster risk mitigation of bridge systems. We provide a decision methodology to select optimal solutions among possible alternatives when the prospect of new construction offers opportunities to improve the resilience of the network by altering its existing topology. Finally, we conclude with an illustration of this resilience-based risk mitigation framework using a hypothetical bridge network susceptible to seismic hazards.

Abstract:The construction of infrastructures is becoming increasingly complex and risky under uncertainty, which often results in construction delay. Many efforts have been made to identify and control construction schedule risks. However, previous efforts only focused on the diversity of risks with assumption that risks are independent. The ignorance of (1) interdependencies between the originalities of risks within infrastructures as a sociotechnical system, and (2) links between risks impedes the reasonable explanation for and assessment of the construction delay of infrastructures. This paper aims to develop a novel hybrid approach to address these issues based on dialectical systems and network theory. It first identified construction schedule risks from the perspective of dialectical systems at the industry level, which were further verified by global expert interviews and refined by questionnaire survey based on the Chinese infrastructure industry. Then, using network theory-based analysis, the key challenges and solutions were identified at project level based on a real infrastructure case. Seven key risks and 20 key risk links were identified with effective risk mitigation strategies provided for this case project. This research provides a new approach to understanding and analyzing construction schedule risks for better delivery of infrastructures. The results are not only helpful for the Chinese infrastructure industry, but with revisions are also applicable for other regions to improve construction schedule risk management. Abstract:Extreme events and structural deterioration leads to failure accidents of bridge structures, thus caused immeasurable economic losses. Selecting ultimate bearing capacity of the bridge structure as the structure function indicators, two recovery functions were presented including a linear model based on empirical investigation and a fitted model based on mechanical analogy. Based on the above the disaster resilience index was established so as to measure the resilient capacity of bridge structure; Meanwhile, Bridge structure disaster resilience grading standards was recommended so as to provide new ideas and reference for bridge disaster prevention design.

Abstract:In view of exsisting situation on river course management and flood-control influence assessment in Chi- na,a new assessment concept of flood-control risk for river-crossing road and bridge construction was presented with a comprehensive application of generalized structural reliability principle and relative disciplines theory.The assess- ment index system and management system for the risk was established.Finally,the adaptability and reliability was varified by an actual engineering example.

Abstract:A great progress has been achieved in the research of structural reliability theories and their applications since 1920s when it became a topic of worldwide interest. Based on extensive published papers and research documents, a state of the art summary, consisting of structural reliability fundamental theories and approaches, structural system reliability, Monte Carlo modeling in structural reliability analysis, ultimate and serviceability limit state reliability, fatigue and aseismic reliability as well as construction and wear out period reliability of reinforced concrete structures, is presented in three parts. This is the third part of the serial papers, it focuses on the aspects of development of aseismic reliability, as well as constructuion period and wear out period reliability of reinforced concrete structures.

Abstract:Transportation infrastructure has been identified by the US Department of Homeland Security as one of sixteen critical infrastructure systems essential to the well-being of modern societies. We utilize recent developments in modern network theory to introduce a novel metric based on system reliability and network connectivity to measure resilience-based performance of a road transportation network. The formulation of this resilience-based performance metric (referred in the paper as WIPW), systematically integrates the network topology, redundancy level, traffic patterns, structural reliability of network components (i.e. roads and bridge) and functionality of the network during community's post-disaster recovery, and permits risk mitigation alternatives for improving transportation network resilience to be compared on a common basis. Reliability analysis of structure of open-spandrel truss-arch type prestressed aqueduct

Abstract:By combination of the 3-D finite element method with the response surface method, a reliability analysis is made of the structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type prestressed aqueduct, which has been widely used in the South-to-North Water Transfer Middle Route Project. The result shows that the reliability of the aqueduct structure meets the design requirement, and that the response surface method is an effective method for reliability analysis of the aqueduct structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type.

Abstract:: The reliability and integrity of smart roads in the context of homeland security and asset management pertain to different risks and phenomena. Unfortunately, many issues remain unsolved in terms of the relationship between different types of risks ( e.g ., safety versus structural integrity), the impact of information technologies, and the impact of the construction technologies and design options ( e.g ., viaduct or tunnel). In light of the above, the objectives of this paper were confined to the following: 1) Analysing critical road infrastructures, CRI, in the context of homeland security, asset management and information communication technologies, ICT. 2) Setting up a risk model for CRIs. Three equations were derived. Results demonstrate the complexity of the studied system, where many components interact. Future research will focus on the main criticalities that emerged in the study.

Abstract:When encountering crisis events, systems, organizations, and people must react and handle these unpredictable events. Under these circumstances, important social functions and infrastructures must be restored or adapted as quickly as possible. This capacity refers to resilience. Although considerable research has been conducted on the resilience of infrastructure systems over the past years, a critical review of these studies remains lacking. Therefore, this study aims to bridge the knowledge gap by presenting a comprehensive review of infrastructure research conducted in the past decade, namely, from 2011 to 2021. On the basis of a systematic search, this study identified 222 journal articles investigating infrastructure resilience. A review of the identified papers revealed five research streams in the area of infrastructure resilience (IR), namely, the assessment of infrastructure resilience, improvement of infrastructure resilience, conceptualizing infrastructure resilience from various perspectives, factors influencing infrastructure resilience, and the prediction of infrastructure resilience. This study also presented some directions that future research can pursue. These directions include analyzing factors influencing infrastructure resilience based on simulation, assessing the resilience of green infrastructure, improving the resilience of interdependent infrastructure, and predicting the resilience of infrastructure based on empirical research.

Abstract:Population growth, economic development, and rapid urbanization in many areas have led to increased exposure and vulnerability of structural and infrastructure systems to hazards. Thus, developing risk-based assessment and management tools is crucial for stakeholders and the general public to make informed decisions on prehazard planning and posthazard recovery. To this end, structural risk and resilience assessment has been an ongoing research topic in the past 20 years. Recently, machine learning (ML) techniques have been shown as promising tools for advancing the risk and resilience assessment of structure and infrastructure systems. To date, however, there is a lack of a holistic review on ML progress across various branches of structural engineering; an in-depth analysis of literature that can provide a timely evaluation of risk and resilience assessment methods of the built environment, where different types of structural and infrastructure facilities are interconnected. For this reason, this study conducted a comprehensive review on ML for risk and resilience assessment in four main branches of structural engineering (buildings, bridges, pipelines, and electric power systems). To cover the crucial modules in the prevailing risk and resilience assessment frameworks, existing literature is thoroughly examined and characterized in terms of six attributes of ML, including method, task type, data source, analysis scale, event type, and topic area. Moreover, limitations and challenges are identified, and future research needs are highlighted to move forward the frontiers of ML for structural risk and resilience assessment.

Abstract:Reliability theory encountered huge difficulties for complex structures due to its being studied from the mathematical aspect more than physical analysis aspect in the past few decades. This paper summarizes a physical approach to the engineering reliability, including: (1) the physical random models for structural loading, especially taking dynamic excitations as examples; (2) the physical random model for structural resistances, especially taking multi-scale stochastic damage model for concrete as an example; (3) the randomness transmission in structural systems, especially stressed on the Probability Density Evolution Method (PDEM) and its advances for nonlinear stochastic dynamics, respectively. In this framework, the concept and framework of generalized engineering reliability theory is clarified. © 2013 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Abstract:The present paper studies the reliability-based structural optimization of the civil engineering in the seismic zone. The objective is to minimize the sum of construction material cost and the expected failure loss under severe earthquake, which is obtained by the sum of the products of the failure probability and its failure losses for the important failure modes. The set of constraints includes the deterministic constraints, and the constraints based on structural reliability—the reliability index constraints of structural element failure for the serviceability state under minor earthquake and the failure probability of the structural system for the ultimate limit state under severe earthquake. By introducing the load roughness index, the structural system reliability computation under hazard load can be greatly simplified, which is approximately determined by its weakest failure mode. Finally, the numerical example of high rising shear RC frame is calculated.

Abstract:As the uncertainty of the influencing factors including the vehicle load and road environment and the complexity of road structure design parameters making the structural design of concrete pavement does not match with the actual existing situation, therefore, how to further improve the existing pavement design methods and how to scientifically and reasonably evaluate the reliability of the existing pavement performance have been a hot issue among academics and engineers at home and abroad. This paper analyzes and summarizes results of recent studies on the basis, combining with the actual situation of concrete pavement project, and carries out a more in-depth systematic study on the reliability analysis of concrete pavement. By studying the basic theory of engineering structure reliability, this paper proposes analysis methods of pavement reliability which are appropriate for the characteristics of pavement structure.

Abstract:The performance of structures is a time-variant process with large amount of uncertainties as well as the load and environmental effects on them.The reliability of a specific structure should be managed considering not only a generic design but also the inspection and maintenance strategies during its life-cycle.In the paper,firstly the advantages and limitations of the time-variant reliability theory currently used in structural design are discussed.Then the concept of life-cycle reliability management is introduced.A framework considering risk optimization and safety constraint is proposed for life-cycle reliability management.Several important theoretic issues are discussed,including the definition and usage of time-dependent reliability and dynamic reliability index,the expression of life-cycle cost and the Bayesian decision analysis,etc..The framework stresses the importance of information updating during the structural life-cycle,and keeps consistent with current design practice.
