Abstract:A mild and efficient oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds using the PhI(OAc)2 (1.1 eq.) with n-Bu4NBr (8 mol %) in water at room temperature is described.This new procedure is very simple and affords the desired carbonyl compounds in high yields.

Abstract:The oxidation of alcohols by N-bromosuccinimide with water as the reaction medium was developed.A series of alcohols including benzylic and aliphatic alcohols were converted into the corresponding ketones or aldehydes in high yields under catalyst-free conditions in water,except for some alcohols bearing donating substituents.However,the oxidation of less active alcohols could be carried out smoothly with Salen-Co(III) complex as a catalyst in a medium of water and CH2Cl2 mixture.

Abstract:A new system consisting of a copper(I) complex generated in situ from a tetradentate nitrogen ligand and CuI in combination with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives was successfully developed. The system was suitable for efficient and selective aerobic oxidation of primary benzyl and allyl alcohols with a wide range of functional groups to the corresponding aldehydes at room temperature. The best result was obtained with N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine as the ligand and 4-OH-TEMPO as a cocatalyst in CH3CN. In addition, high-resolution mass spectrometry, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical experiments were used to provide evidence of intermediates.

Abstract:A new catalytic system for oxidation of alcohols with oxygen by N -hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) combined with CuBr has been developed. The reaction results showed that this catalytic system can effectively catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carboxylic acids or ketones. We obtained 100% selectivity for acetophenone at 94.2% conversion of phenylethanol at 75 °C for 20 h. A mechanism of oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by NHPI/CuBr was proposed.

Abstract:An efficient protocol for the oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds with molecular iodine and potassium tert-butoxide is described. Various primary and secondary alcohols were converted to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in high yields. The oxidation of 2-phenylethanol produced an "abnormal" acetalic ketone. The readily availability of starting materials, convenient synthetic procedure, operational simplicity, mild reaction conditions, and high yields makes this protocol a competitive alternative in the synthesis of ynones and ketones as well as aryl aldehydes.

Abstract:Owing to the ubiquity of the hydroxyl group, reductive deoxygenation of alcohols has become an active research area. The classic Barton-McCombie reaction suffers from a tedious two-step procedure. New efficient methods have been developed, but they have some limitations, such as a narrow substrate scope and the use of moisture-sensitive Lewis acids. In this work, we describe the Ph3P/ICH2CH2I-promoted reductive deoxygenation of alcohols with NaBH4. The process is applicable to benzyl, allyl and propargyl alcohols, and also to primary and secondary alcohols, demonstrating a wide substrate scope and a good level of functional group tolerance. This protocol features convenient operation and low cost of all reagents.

Abstract:The oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl compounds proceeds with high efficiency under molecular oxygen in the presence of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and tungsten oxide/alumina (WO3/Al2O3). The method is environmentally benign, because the reaction requires only molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant and gives water as a side product. Various aromatic, alicyclic, and aliphatic alcohols can be converted to their corresponding carbonyl compounds in excellent yields. It is noteworthy that the oxidative transformation of the alcohols proceeds chemoselectively in the presence of other functional groups. In addition, a plausible catalytic pathway is proposed.

Abstract:An efficient and practical catalytic system for the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes/ketones using catalytic amounts of Bi(NO3)3 and Keto-ABNO (9-azabicyclo [3.3.1]nonan-3-one N-oxyl) with air as the environmentally benign oxidant was developed. Various primary and secondary alcohols were smoothly oxidized to the corresponding products under mild conditions, and satisfactory yields were achieved. Moreover, this methodology avoids the use of a ligand and base. The gram-scale reaction was demonstrated for the oxidation of 1-phenyl ethanol, and the product of acetophenone was obtained at an isolated yield of about 94%.

Abstract:Reductive deoxygenation of alcohols is particularly challenging because of the high bond dissociation energy of the C-OH bond and the poor leaving ability of the hydroxyl group. Herein we describe a Ph(3)P═O-catalyzed reductive deoxygenation of benzyl alcohols with PhSiH(3) under an air atmosphere within 30 min of reaction time. The use of catalytic loading of Ph(3)P═O enhances the practicality of this protocol.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)-catalyzed oxidation of alcohols has been achieved with di-tert-butyldiaziridinone as the oxidant under mild conditions. A wide variety of primary and secondary alcohols with various functional groups can be oxidized to aldehydes and ketones in high yields. The reaction proceeds under neutral conditions making it compatible with acid- or base-sensitive substrates, and it is amenable to gram scale.

Abstract:An efficient and convenient method for the synthesis of phenols and aliphatic alcohols is described in this paper. The oxidative hydroxylation reaction of various organoboron compounds proceeded smoothly by employing H2O2 as the oxidant and citric acid as the catalyst in water at room temperature to produce phenols and aliphatic alcohols in satisfactory to excellent yields (up to 99% yield). Various synthetically useful functional groups, such as halogen atom, cyano, and nitro groups, remain intact during the oxidative hydroxylation. The developed catalytic system also could accommodate phenylboronic pinacol ester and potassium phenyltrifluoroborate to give the target product good yields.

Abstract:A highly efficient catalytic system without transition metals in water has been developed for aerobic oxidations of benzylic alcohols. The newly developed catalyst system could oxidize benzylic alcohols and heteroaromatic analogues with 1 mol % TEMPO as a catalyst and with a catalytic amount of 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin and NaNO2 as cocatalysts. Under the optimal conditions, various alcohols could be converted into their corresponding aldehydes or ketones in high yields.

Abstract:A highly practical metal-free catalytic system has been developed for aerobic oxidation of alcohols to corresponding ketones and aldehydes using catalytic amount of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and tert-butyl nitrite (TBN) with molecular oxygen serving as the terminal oxidant. A variety of aliphatic, aromatic, allylic, and heterocyclic alcohols were smoothly converted to desired products with moderate to excellent yields. Abstract:An inexpensive catalytic system consisting of vanadyl sulfate and sodium nitrite was developed for the oxidation of benzylic alcohols with molecular oxygen under mild conditions. Benzyl alcohols with various substitutions were efficiently converted to their corresponding aldehydes with high conversion and selectivity under 80 C (e.g., 4-nitrobenzyl alcohol was smoothly oxidized to 4-nitrobenzyl aldehyde with 94% yield under 0.5 MPa of molecular oxygen). Halogen, noble metals, extra base or complicated ligands were avoided. Addition of a trace of water to this system before the reaction was crucial for the high efficiency.
