Abstract:The available capacity of motorway networks is degraded in presence of traffic congestion, leading to reduced throughput, increased pollution and higher accident risk. The traffic flow efficiency may be increased via suitable application of several control measures, such as ramp metering, driver information, route guidance, variable speed limits and further link control measures. This paper presents a macroscopic traffic flow model along with selected validation results, followed by an overview of some generic traffic surveillance methods and control strategies for motorway networks. Limited simulation and field results demonstrating the efficiency of the presented methods are also provided.

Abstract:In order to realize the energy efficient on the traffic and illuminating lights in city, the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System is proposed in this paper. The working criteria of real-time monitoring and intelligently control are designed. The key technologies including Internet of Things with power line communication by LonWorks technology and the piezoelectric sensor on site detecting are utilized in the research. The traffic density is detected by piezoelectric sensor and is "told" to LonWorks network to adjust the traffic red lamp lighting time and the illuminating time. The working flow of the Intelligent Traffic and Illuminating Control System has been verified to ensure the sufficient capability by Cp 1.72 and Cpk 1.60 within Statistical Process Control. The Energy efficient is achieved by 35.71% electrical energy reduction and 66.67% fuel consumption reduction on the energy saving and the carbon oxide emission reduction, which demonstrates that the Intelligent Control System achieves effective and valuable real-time monitoring and intelligently control with superiority of the energy efficient compared to the previous reports.

Abstract:We use the fuzzy neural networks to solve the real time region traffic distributed control problem. The region traffic is regarded as a large scale system and the subsystems are the intersections in the region. Each intersection has its own traffic controller which manages the green phase and the phase length dynamically according to its own and its neighbors traffic situations. The simulation shows this method has better performances in the cases of time-varying traffic patterns and heavy traffic conditions than the vehicle actuated method.

Abstract:For a lack of complex intersection effective control method, a novel single intersection intelligent control technique was presented. Signal lamp setting, phase division, pedestrian press-button response, signal lamp advance-off and late-on were discussed in detail. Being a function of traffic flow saturation degree the cycle time was optimized by one fuzzy neural network, and the variable splits were adjusted based on historical and real-time traffic information. The goal was to make the intersection expedite, vehicles stop rate shortest and average - vehicle delay time less. However, the crossing-crosswalk safety of pedestrian had to be assured firstly. This control technique has been used successfully in the intersection of No. 9 road and No. 12 road in Xiasha economic technical development area Hangzhou, China, and the application results have shown to be very good.

Abstract:A novel general multi-phase signal control method was presented based on the idea of object-(oriented) design to increase the efficiency of intersection signal control.A general single intersection model was built up to adjust the phase number and traffic flow in time based on the distributing information of traffic flow for current intersection.Aimed at minimum vehicle time delay,the intersection signal phase and the green light time were optimized respectively with fuzzy control technologies.Comparison of result of simulation with application data with that of an actual signal control method show that this new signal control scheme can make the traffic flow balanced and reduce the average vehicle time delay.

Abstract:This study primarily focuses on the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) as a form of traffic flow detection, which transmits collected information related to traffic flow directly to a control system through an RS232 interface. At the same time, the sensor analyzes and judges the information using an extension algorithm designed to achieve the objective of controlling the flow of traffic. In addition, the traffic flow situation is also transmitted to a remote monitoring control system through ZigBee wireless network communication technology. The traffic flow control system developed in this study can perform remote transmission and reduce traffic accidents. And it can also effectively control traffic flow while reducing traffic delay time and maintaining the smooth flow of traffic.

Abstract:A multi-phase intelligent traffic controller based on inductive vehicle detection technology is designed to resolve complex intersection traffic signal control problems.With six control algorithms and eight operation modes,this controller can meet control requirements of most complex types of intersections.Also,the controller has the functions of green-conflict detection,fault detection and degradation mechanism under fault conditions,so the controller can ensure traffic safe and smooth in most cases.A single-intersection multi-phase traffic signal self-adaptive control strategy based on vehicle queuing length is proposed.The algorithm ensures traffic smooth and makes vehicle delay as short as possible.The controller has been practically applied in Hangzhou and other cities,and the results are satisfactory.

Abstract:Urban large-scale traffic congestion is often formed from the individual intersection's traffic jam. According to the characteristics of these intersections, this paper presents the conception of traffic bottleneck. To prevent bottleneck intersection's queuing back,this paper analysis bottleneck control strategy and its trigger conditions, and presents traffic bottleneck control strategy in single and coordination situation,then conceives single bottleneck control model and coordination bottleneck control model. At last, we prove the control effect of single bottleneck control model in practice. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper presents an automatic traffic surveillance system which is utilized to monitor the traffic intersections. Moving vehicles are extracted accurately from video sequences based on improved background modeling and object tracking method. In this paper, 16 types of general traffic behaviors at intersections are specifically defined and the traffic information collected from the tracking results is used to monitor them. The obtained information of the traffic flow at intersections can be utilized in intelligent traffic management to increase the efficiency and optimize spatial resources of urban road traffic infrastructures.

Abstract:One disadvantage of most conventional vehicle detection methods in a traffic control system is that they can only detect the vehicle in a fixed position. This paper proposed a new vehicle detection method using the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technology. The striking feature of the proposed WSN-based method is that it can monitor the vehicles dynamically. This paper also developed a new signal control algorithm to control the state of the signal light in a road intersection. Simulations of the real-life intersection traffic control system are conducted in the paper. The simulation results show that the proposed method is effective for the traffic control in a real road intersection.
An On-Road Wireless Sensor Network Approach for Urban Traffic State Monitoring

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks are expected to be deployed on urban roadways to monitor the traffic continuously. One of the requirements of traffic monitoring is displaying the traffic states of the front roadways, which can guide the drivers to choose the right way and avoid potential traffic congestions. In this scenario, the information of traffic state changes should be refreshed as early as possible. We propose an adaptive segmentation of the traffic flow based on discrete Fourier transform, which responses timely to traffic state changes without inducing large error. On the other hand, considering the limited power of wireless sensor networks, we propose a novel algorithm for in-network aggregation of the traffic flow time-series, which reduces the communication cost between the sensor nodes and base station significantly. The proposed algorithm scales well with the size of the sensor networks. Our methods are computationally efficient and suitable to be implemented on sensor nodes. The primary experiments on PeMS data demonstrate the effectiveness and energy efficiency of our approach.

Abstract:In urban areas, traffic congestion has become a serious phenomenon resulting in a great waste of time and fuel. How to detect road condition and disseminate traffic information effectively has become a significant challenge. Recently, the technology of vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) has been utilized to deal with this problem, and become an important component of the intelligent transportation system (ITS). As two basic paradigms, both vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-RSU (V2R) communications have their own advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, we propose two novel approaches based on V2V and V2R communications respectively to explore a more suitable candidate for the traffic management. The travel time of vehicles is selected as the common indicator to evaluate the traffic state of route. On the basis of it, a routing algorithm is designed to provide a reasonable route for drivers. Finally, our two approaches are validated in a realistic scenario by Veins. The simulation results show that the performance of V2R scheme is restricted by the limited transmission range of RSU, while the V2V scheme is more appropriate for traffic information dissemination if the broadcast storm is well solved.

Abstract:As living standards rise, there is a noticeable surge in the number of private vehicles. This increase places considerable strain on urban transportation, leading to significant congestion in metropolitan areas. This research delves into the establishment of intelligent traffic control, focusing specifically on the signal light control system to address this growing concern. The realm of intelligent transportation seeks to bolster the efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability of transit systems. To discern variations and identify potential bottlenecks in traffic flow, the background difference method compares traffic data over distinct time frames. This paper melds the background difference method with the SORT tracking algorithm to meticulously recognize and monitor vehicles. Two timing algorithms, Webster and ARRB, are explored in this study. Both are commonly employed to optimize traffic signal control and amplify the fluidity of traffic movement. Presently, the domain of intelligent transport systems is transitioning to embrace digital advancements, aiming to offer astute, efficient, and user-friendly traffic management solutions.
A Robust Traffic Parameter Extraction Approach for Surveillance System at Urban Intersection

Abstract:For a typical urban intersection, moving vehicle shadow and vehicle-pedestrian mixed conditions exist in traffic scene commonly. These interfering factors lead to a very low correct rate of the traffic parameters extraction. This paper presents robust traffic parameters extraction (RTPE) approach for traffic surveillance system at an urban intersection, which contains three key algorithms. First, a texture-based vehicle segmentation (TVS) algorithm is introduced to solve the moving shadow problem. Second, we propose an image exponential entropy-based vehicle exist detection (IEE-VED) algorithm to reduce the noise interference by pedestrians at the intersection, and we extract vehicle features from raw visual information to determine whether there is a vehicle in the detection zone. On this basis, the traffic parameters measurement (TPM) algorithm is introduced to calculate some important traffic parameters of the intersection for traffic management and traffic jam detection, such as traffic flow, time occupancy ratio, space mean speed and the difference of IN/OUT traffic flow. Experimental results indicate that the proposed RTPE approach is effective for traffic parameters extraction, and these parameters can truly reflect the prevailing traffic condition.

Abstract:Advanced Internet of Things (IoT) technology has a profound impact on improving the intelligence level of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and promoting the sustainable development of urban transportation. However, how to use IoT to process traffic flow and make ITS develop towards automation and global control is still a challenge. Against this backdrop, a prospective traffic controlling model is proposed for ITS based on IoT to enhance the awareness of roads and the responsiveness of transportation system. When traffic congestion events occur, ITS can provide the optimal control strategy of vehicle-to-everything supported vehicles (V2X-supported vehicles) from a macro perspective to control the traffic flow globally and improve traffic efficiency. Specially, the optimal control strategies consider the potential congested road segments caused by congestion propagation. Meanwhile, this paper explores the impact of route choice behavior of V2X-supported vehicles on system performance. The simulation results show the optimal control strategies can alleviate congestion effectively and improve transportation system performance significantly by controlling vehicles.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the vehicles total number growth rates, which exceed the rates of expansion and optimization of the transport infrastructure, the need for the introduction of real-time traffic forecasting and control systems is shown. The factors that make it possible to detect the probability of potentially dangerous situations on the road, such as traffic jams, accidents and lack of parking spaces, respectively, in certain urban areas, based on the data of sensor networks and surveillance cameras combined within the global system of the Internet of Things, have been determined. It is proposed to build a sensor network based on magnetic sensors, which allows for high-precision geolocation with refinement of the received data by using ultrasonic sensors and optical monitoring tools, while identification is carried out by reading RFID tags. It is shown that the task of optimal organization of the relay system includes the determination of the features of the city infrastructure and statistical indicators of the city's traffic flows, and for a multi-level communication system, protocols are determined depending on the distance between nodes, requirements for the level of data protection, data transmission speed, minimum radio signal amplitude, as well as restrictions on the power supply of a separate node. The presented topology of the relay network includes the organization of sensor nodes into clusters, transmission from the main node of the cluster to the gateway node, and from the gateway nodes to the base station. On the basis of the specified model, a scheme for building cluster self-organization algorithms can be presented by forming clusters in real time according to the topology of the cluster tree, which allows simplifying the data transfer subsystem and reducing the time of processing input data. The developed scheme for analyzing the traffic flow at the intersection and the availability of parking spaces can be used in the development of methodological recommendations for the implementation of the "Smart City" concept and the creation of software applications that provide drivers with information about the state of traffic and predicted changes within a certain time interval. Coping with Real-World Challenges in Real-Time Urban Traffic Control

Abstract:In urban road networks, the use of real-time adaptive traffic signal control systems faces two typical challenges. First, various sources of uncertainty and disturbance can significantly degrade the accuracy of real-time flow predictions. Second, the optimization of vehicle flows must also give active attention to other transportation modes such as bus transit and pedestrian flows. In this paper, these challenges are investigated in the context of a recently implemented system called SURTRAC (Scalable URban TRAffic Control), which has now been running continuously in an actual urban environment for more than one year. SURTRAC takes a decentralized, schedule-driven approach to real-time traffic control and its design aims at urban (grid-like) networks with multiple, completing dominant flows that shift through the day. Motivated by observations of the system in operation, several strategies are proposed for strengthening the basic SURTRAC algorithm to better deal with real-world uncertainties and disruptive events, as well as multi-modal traffic demands. We evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies using both simulations and analysis of data collected from the pilot deployment.

Abstract:From the past few decades, technology is out breaking with its significant application in each and every field. Gradually, technology is becoming integral part of human life and effectively used to address many societal issues. One such issue is traffic in urban areas that leads to elongated waiting time at road intersections. An Intelligent Traffic Signal System (ITSS) can mitigate the urban traffic congestion. Already many researchers are working towards and proposed various solutions or techniques. The solution involves combination of different technologies such as Fuzzy Logic, Wireless Sensor Network, Machine Learning, Artificial Neural Networks, Internet of Things, Microcontrollers and high level computing environments. The proposed ideas are capable of adapting to the traffic demands based on real time situations on the road, resulting in efficient utilization of the available road infrastructure. In this paper, an attempt has been made to classify the traffic control signal system deployed at the intersections based on technology adopted and various research contribution for developing ITSS are also summarised.

Abstract:Recent emergency of sensor networks has been identified as one of the most important technologies in future. It leads to numerous novel applications for environment monitoring and collaborative information processing in diverse fields. This paper describes the concept of a sensor network-based traffic information service system which can provide a satisfying solution to urban traffic surveillance and traveling information release. First, general tasks and unique advantages of the system are explored, and the layered architecture of system is outlined, as well as hardware and software configuration. Then, a pilot platform is analyzed to exemplify the concept. Open research issues for development are discussed in the end.
