Abstract:The fiber strapdown inertial navigation system (INS) has been widely utilized in aircraft, autonomous driving, robotics, and other fields due to the rapid growth of fiber technology. The core components of INS, the fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) and quartz flexible accelerometer (QFA), are prone to affected by the environmental temperature variation. The traditional temperature drift compensation method requires a considerable time to calibrate each inertial sensor individually. But after the six inertial sensors are integrated, the temperature environment inside the INS will become more complex. As a result, this device-level method has an unsatisfactory effect in the practical application of INS. Furthermore, the traditional method ignores the fact that the temperature drift characteristics of FOG are not the same at different working states. To solve the above problems, we propose a novel temperature drift compensation method of INS based on gravitational search algorithm (GSA) tuning support vector regression (SVR). The startup state and stable working state are modeled independently based on the FOG's features. Without adding additional thermometers to the inertial sensors, the temperature field is constructed by making full use of the information provided by the built-in thermometer of six inertial sensors. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of our method during different working states. And compared with the traditional polynomial fitting method, our method has better performance in the navigation experiment, the navigation accuracy increased by more than 50%.

Abstract:The fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) is an angular rate sensor based on Sagnac effect. It has been widely used in aviation, unmanned, robot, and other fields due to its benefits of all solid state, high precision, and low cost. However, the photoelectric devices inside the FOG will produce a non-negligible error in the dynamic environment, resulting in zero bias drift and increased noise. Currently, research on the dynamic error of FOG focuses primarily on linear vibration, assuming that no input angular rate exists at this moment. However, the dynamic errors caused by angular vibration are more complicated in the practical application environment. The output of FOG includes both effective angular information and dynamic error at this moment, which means that the dynamic error should be removed while the effective angular information must be retained. In this paper, we focus on the effect of angular vibration on FOG, and propose a dynamic error compensation method of FOG based on complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) that properly separates the effective signal and dynamic error. We also consider the amplitude frequency characteristics of FOG under dynamic conditions and utilize the FOG bandwidth test experiment to verify the effectiveness of our method. The experimental results show that the compensated signal can correctly calculate the bandwidth of FOG. It indicates that our method can effectively compensate the dynamic error in angular vibration environment while improving the performance of FOG in dynamic environment.

Abstract:The calibration accuracy of the inertial navigation system (INS) has a non-negligible effect on its actual navigation performance. As the core component of the INS, the scale factor error of the fiber optical gyroscope (FOG) is one of the main error sources of the INS, which has a vital impact on the navigation accuracy. Generally, the scale factor of FOG is considered to be a constant value, but with the increasing demand for the accuracy of FOG, the scale factor error can not be ignored, how to calibration the FOG scale factor at different input velocity rates and temperature has attracted people's attention. The traditional calibration methods usually select several fixed temperature points and input velocity points, then the scale factor error is compensated by linear fitting or piecewise fitting. In order to improve the calibration accuracy, our paper considers the coupling effect of input velocity rate and temperature and designs a calibration experiment at continuous input velocity rates and temperature, the calibration time is shortened by 30%, then we propose a nonlinear error compensation method based on the LSTM. The experimental result shows that the std error of the FOG scale factor is reduced from 280 ppm to 13 ppm and the angle measurement error is reduced by 70%, which verify the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:The fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) has been widely used in the field of dynamic angle measurement due to its characteristics of wide dynamic range and high precision. Considering the change of the installation state of the FOG and the inconvenience of the calibration of the scale factor in engineering, an error compensation of the angle measurement using FOG, which is based on the tilt sensor, is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the principle of the angle measurement based on the FOG and the principle of the tilt sensor are introduced and the error compensation model based on tilt sensor is established. Secondly, simulation analysis and error analysis are performed and the compensation scheme is designed. Finally, according to the compensation scheme, the instrument prototype is built and the experiments are carried out. The experimental results show that although the error is not completely eliminated after adopting compensation scheme, the angle measurement deviation of the FOG can be greatly reduced and limited within 5 '' when the tilt state changes within a small range (the output of the tilt sensor is less than 0.3 degrees). It indicates that the compensation scheme is effective and feasible. More importantly, it is easier to realize in engineering in contrast with other compensation methods.

Abstract:The fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) is the core component of the inertial system, which has been widely utilized in aviation, maritime, automotive, and other fields. The scale factor is one of the critical parameters to characterize the dynamic performance of the FOG. Due to the temperature sensitivity of the optoelectronic devices, the scale factor errors will be caused with the temperature change. The traditional compensation method usually compensates the output of the FOG in a stable working state. Without considering the difference between the characteristics of the FOG in the start-up stage and the stable working state, the compensation accuracy of the traditional method cannot meet the demand for quick start-up in application areas. According to the above analysis, a novel scale factor error compensation method based on the grey wolf optimization (GWO) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, a new experiment is designed to calibrate the scale factor error in the start-up stage, which can reduce the calibration time and ensure the calibration accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed method significantly improves the compensation accuracy compared with other methods, such as the multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) and the traditional GRU network.

Abstract:The navigation accuracy of the inertial navigation system (INS) can be greatly improved when the inertial measurement unit (IMU) is effectively calibrated and compensated, such as gyro drifts and accelerometer biases. To reduce the requirement for turntable precision in the classical calibration method, a continuous dynamic self-calibration method based on a three-axis rotating frame for the hybrid inertial navigation system is presented. First, by selecting a suitable IMU frame, the error models of accelerometers and gyros are established. Then, by taking the navigation errors during rolling as the observations, the overall twenty-one error parameters of hybrid inertial navigation system (HINS) are identified based on the calculation of the intermediate parameter. The actual experiment verifies that the method can identify all error parameters of HINS and this method has equivalent accuracy to the classical calibration on a high-precision turntable. In addition, this method is rapid, simple and feasible.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the causes and effects of error in the Strapdown Micro-Electro-Mechanical System Inertial Measurement Unit (MEMS-IMU), utilizing a sensor calibration method based on a two-axis turntable. By considering deterministic errors such as sensor bias, scale factor, and non-orthogonality of the sensitive axis, an error model was established to assess their impact on measurement accuracy. An expression was provided to represent the relationship between sensor data collection and external input stimuli, storing the error parameters of the accelerometer and the gyroscope separately in parameter matrices. The error parameter matrix between input and output quantities was fitted using the least squares method, and error compensation was completed in conjunction with the error model. By comparing the original data with the error-compensated data, the calibration results were obtained. This improved the consistency of the measurements from the sensitive axes to the stimulus source, reduced the zero bias error of each sensitive axis, and enhanced the positioning accuracy of the Strapdown MEMS-IMU.

Abstract:In the rotational inertial navigation system (RINS), the horizontal gyro drift can be modulated when the IMU rotates around the z axis. At the same time, the scale factor error of the z gyro can be offset by forward and reverse rotation. However, in the forward and backward rotation, the gyro scale factor error will still cause the heading angle output error. Moreover, the change of the scale factor error of the fiber optic gyros(FOG) is sensitive to temperature changes, which makes it difficult to calibrate gyro scale factor error accurately. Therefore, in this paper, a method to calibrate the scale factor errors of two RINSs dynamically is proposed. During the movement of vehicle, the heading angle difference between the RINS1 and RINS2 is calculated real time, the scale factor errors of RINS1 and RINS2 could be estimated at the same time with the least squares filtering algorithm. The simulation experiments show that when RINS1 and RINS2 adopt a reasonable rotation strategy, the gyro scale factor errors were less than 0.5ppm. In the vehicle experiment, the heading angle error caused by the gyro scale factor error is kept below 5". And the method significantly improves the problem that scale factor error affected by temperature changes during navigation process, and at the same time solves the problem of the calibration coefficient error in the dynamic situation.

Abstract:To solve the problem of constant drift divergence in strapdown inertial navigation system, a self-compensation method using missile rotation modulation is proposed. The constant drift of gyroscope and accelerometer can be modulated into periodic signal by spin modulation of missile body without special rotating mechanism. The influence of constant drift can be effectively eliminated by integral operation. The simulation results show that the method can effectively suppress the error growth, improve the navigation accuracy of SINS.

Abstract:Error distribution analysis is an important assistant technology for the research of SINS(Strapdown Inertial Navigation System). Error distribution result can provide the contribution of different errors to final navigation error, which is helpful for modifying and optimizing SINS. To realize decomposing the navigation error into parts that caused by each error source, the SINS error state space model is established and covariance matrix is decomposed according to error sources. The proposed error distribution analysis method based on 34-dimension SINS error model can quantitatively analyze the contribution to the end navigation error of initial errors, IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) bias, IMU scale factor errors, mounting errors of gyroscopes and accelerometers, and IMU stochastic errors. The simulations in static condition and single axis rotation condition indict that the distribution result of proposed analysis method accords with the law of error propagation. After trajectory determined, the corresponding error distribution result will be calculated with the proposed method. Compared with the Monte-Carlo method and other method based on covariance matrix, the proposed method uses more complete error model, considers the interaction effect of error sources and can be easily realized with less computation.

Abstract:The GNSS/INS (Global Navigation Satellite System/Inertial Navigation System) navigation system has been widely discussed in recent years. Because of the unique INS-aided loop structure, the deeply coupled system performs very well in highly dynamic environments. In practice, vehicle maneuvering has a big influence on the performance of IMUs (Inertial Measurement Unit), and determining whether the selected IMUs and receiver parameters satisfy the loop dynamic requirement is still a critical problem for deeply coupled systems. Aiming at this, a new parameter self-calibration method based on the norm principle is proposed which explains the relationship between IMU precision and the velocity error of the system; the method will also provide a detailed solution to calculate the loop steady-state tracking error, so it will eventually make a judgment about the stability of the tracking loop under present system parameter settings. Lastly, a full digital simulation platform is set up, and the results of simulations show good agreement with the proposed method.

Abstract:It is vital for a strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) to be calibrated before normal use. In this paper, a new kind of norm-observed calibration method is proposed. Considering that the norm of the output of accelerometers and gyroscopes can be exactly the norm of local acceleration of gravity and Earth rotation angular velocity, respectively, optimization function about all-parameter calibration and the corresponding 24-position calibration path is established. Differential evolutionary algorithm (DE) is supposed to be the best option in parameter identification due to its strong search and fast convergence abilities. However, the high-dimensional individual vector from calibration error equations restrains the algorithm’s optimum speed and accuracy. To overcome this drawback, improved DE (IDE) optimization is specially designed: First, current “DE/rand/1” and “DE/current-to-best/1” mutation strategies are combined as one with complementary advantages and overall balance during the whole optimization process. Next, with the increase of the evolutionary generation, the mutation factor can adjust itself according to the convergence situation. Multiple identification tests prove that our IDE optimization has rapid convergence and high repeatability. Besides, certain motivation of external angular velocity is added to the gyroscope calibration, and a series of dynamic observation paths is formed, further improving the optimization accuracy. The final static navigation experiment shows that SINS with calibration parameters solved by IDE has better performance over other identification methods, which further explains that our novel method is more accurate and reliable in parameter identification.

Abstract:Strapdown inertial navigation system/celestial navigation system (SINS/CNS) integrated navigation with narrow-field-of-view (NFOV) star tracker is widely employed in the aviation and aerospace fields contributed by its high accuracy and autonomy. However, due to the computational cost and data transmission of CNS, the output data of CNS and SINS cannot be completely synchronized, which seriously affects the performance of integrated navigation, particularly in highly dynamic environments. To solve the problem above, this article constructs a model and proposes an online calibration method for the asynchronous time between the outputs from SINS and CNS with NFOV star tracker. First, the error characteristic of SINS/CNS asynchronous time is analyzed, and the imaging detection is revealed to be significantly affected by the SINS/CNS asynchronous time in dynamic environments. Additionally, on the basis of the error characteristic analysis, a corresponding error model is established. Finally, an online calibration scheme of SINS/CNS asynchronous time is designed based on the backtracking navigation algorithm. Simulations and field experiments show that the online calibration method works well in calibrating the SINS/CNS asynchronous time and compensating for the tri-axis attitude misalignment angles of the SINS, affirming the efficacy and feasibility of the established model and proposed calibration method in this article.

Quantitative analysis of SINS attitude Drift error in high dynamic

Abstract:Under the High Dynamic (HD) flight environment, there is a specific precision demand on the attitude updating algorithm for the Strap-down Inertial Navigation System (SINS) applied to ultra-high speed vehicles. This paper deduces the attitude drift error criterion for the optimized coning algorithm (OCA) for each type of sub-sample (including 2 sub-samples, 3 sub-samples and 4 sub-samples, etc.) that is used in the equivalent rotation vector algorithm (ERVA) of attitude updating. Moreover, the quantitative analysis of applicability is studied on each type of sub-sample for ERVA of attitude updating. Numerical analysis and simulation results show that this attitude drift error criterion is in more accordance with the practical attitude calculation about ERVA of attitude updating than before. ? 2014 ISSN 1881-803X.

Abstract:The rotational inertial navigation system (INS) has received wide attention in recent years because it can achieve high precision without using costly inertial sensors. However, the introduction of the turntable causes additional errors, including mounting errors between the inertial measurement unit (IMU) axes and the turntable axes. Analysis, calibration and compensation of the mounting errors are necessary in rotational INS. In this paper, the mounting errors are introduced into the sensor model of a dual-axis rotational INS. Analysing the improved model indicated that the mounting errors’ effect on the IMU errors is inconspicuous, but the effect on the output attitude is significant. If the output attitude is not required, the mounting errors can be ignored; conversely, it is important to calibrate and compensate for such errors. A calibration method for the mounting errors is designed using the thin-shell (TS) algorithm, and the method's precision has the same order of magnitude as the residuals of gyro misalignment in the simulation test. Laboratory experimental results validate the theory and proved that the calibration and compensation method for mounting errors proposed in this paper helps improve the output attitude's precision without a precise installation.

Abstract:By rotating a strapdown inertial navigation system (INS) over one or more axes, a number of error sources originating from the employed sensors cancel out during the integration process. Rotary angle accuracy has an effect on the performance of rotational INS (RINS). The application of existing calibration methods based on gyroscope measurements is restricted by the structure of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and scale factor stability of the gyroscope. The multireadhead method has problems in miniaturization and cost. Hence, optical angle encoder calibration methods using accelerometers are proposed, on the basis of navigation error and accuracy requirement analyses for a single-axis RINS. The test results show that the accuracy of calibration methods proposed is higher than 4 arcsec (1σ).

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the calibration accuracy of FOG depends on the precision of turntable, the relationship between the rotation excitation mode calibration and system-level calibration of FOG and the precision of turntable is analyzed. Firstly, the error model of fog is given, and the optimal rotation path is designed based on the principle of rotation excitation mode calibration. The rotation excitation mode calibration and system-level calibration simulation are carried out respectively. The comparison results show that when the precision of the turntable is 1", the scale coefficient error of the rotation excitation mode calibration is about 60% lower than that of the system calibration. Through further simulation, it is found that the scale coefficient error of the gyroscope calibrated with 10 turns of the turntable is about 50% lower than that of the gyroscope calibrated with 5 turns, and the scale coefficient error can be effectively reduced by increasing the number of turns of the turntable. Finally, the actual experiment is carried out, and it is proved that the calibration accuracy of the rotating excitation mode is higher than that of the system level when the precision of the turntable is higher, which has a certain practical significance for improving the precision of the inertial navigation beacon.

Abstract:It is a challenge to achieve high accuracy navigation for land vehicles without the aid of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Inertial measurement unit (IMU) and odometer (OD) are widely deployed due to their complementary properties. In this paper, SINS/OD integrated navigation algorithm based on body frame position increment is studied to improve the navigation performance. Taking the calibration errors of odometer scale factor, IMU installation angle, and lever arm into consideration, the odometer measurement model is derived. Then measurement equations based on body frame position increment are proposed to overcome the amplified random errors in the traditional velocity observation approach. Odometer fault detection and exception are conducted based on residual χ 2 detection method, with the nonholonomic constraints of land vehicles applied to mitigate the standalone SINS error drift. Long distance real test is carried out using laser gyro SINS to assess the proposed algorithm, which shows that navigation performance can be effectively improved.

Abstract:The structure of micro-inertial navigation unit(MINU) was designed.Mathematical models of rolling method and rotating platform method were set up separately to calibrate zero bias,scale factor and installation angle error of accelerators and gyroscopes.An on-field optimal calibration method based on fictitious noise was presented.Kalman filter was used to estimate and compensate zero bias of accelerators and gyroscopes.The results of static and vehicle tests show the validity and feasibility of the above methods.The calibration methods are characterized by celerity and easy to implement,and could improve navigation accuracy.They are suitable for short-time,low or middle precision navigation system.

Abstract:A gyroscope-free strapdown inertial navigation system (GFSINS) solves the carrier attitude through the reasonable spatial combination of accelerometers, with a particular focus on the precision of angular velocity calculation. This paper conducts an analysis of a twelve-accelerometer configuration scheme and proposes an angular velocity fusion algorithm based on the Kalman filter. To address the sign misjudgment issue that may arise when calculating angular velocity using the extraction algorithm, a sliding window correction method is introduced to enhance the accuracy of angular velocity calculation. Additionally, the data from the integral algorithm and the data from the improved extraction algorithm are fused using Kalman filtering to obtain the optimal estimation of angular velocity. Simulation results demonstrate that this algorithm significantly reduces the maximum value and standard deviation of angular velocity error by one order of magnitude compared to existing algorithms. Experimental results indicate that the algorithm's calculated angle exhibits an average difference of less than 0.5° compared to the angle measured by the laser tracker. This level of accuracy meets the requirements for attitude measurement in the laser scanning projection system.
