Abstract:Optical Burst Switching (OBS) has been proposed as a new paradigm to achieving a practical balance between Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS). Hybrid Optical Networks (HON) that combines OCS and OBS has emerged to grant the OBS network the ability to support connection-oriented applications. Although efficient in terms of reducing the burst loss probability as well as improving the overall network performance, it provides a limited degree of Quality of Service (QoS). What we mean by QoS is the capability of a network to provide a guaranteed level of availability while satisfying strict limits on delay. In this paper, we propose new hybrid architecture for OBS networks. The proposed architecture qualifies the OBS network to support different classes of QoS.

Abstract:The multi-log(2)N network architecture is attractive for constructing optical switches, and the related routing algorithms are critical for the operation and efficiency of such switches. Although several routing algorithms have been proposed for multi-log(2)N networks, a full performance comparison among them has not been published lip to now. Thus, we rectify this omission by providing Such a comparison in terms of blocking probability, time complexity, hardware cost and load balancing capability. Notice that the load balance is important for reducing the peak power requirement of a switch, so we also propose in this paper a new routing algorithm for optical multi-log(2)N networks to achieve a better load balance.

Abstract:Load-Balanced Optical Switch (LBOS) [20] ensures close-to-100% throughout and all-optical transmission between linecards. In this paper, we extend LBOS for multi-cabinet implementation. The challenges lie in the fact that the practical implementation requirements in single-cabinet LBOS become un-scalable for multi-cabinet scenario. First of all, we remove the restriction on LBOS that propagation delay (tp) between adjacent linecards must equal to the transmission time (tpkt) for sending one packet. The delay t p is relaxed to be any value, which can accommodate the long and unequal distances fibers among cabinets. Secondly, we outstrip the upper bound of switch size N = 160 in LBOS. The basic idea is that the adjacent linecards share an identical channel/wavelength. Then LBOS can be scaled to support the large switch size of multi-cabinet. Last but not least, a more feasible fair scheduler is devised to replace the original one in LBOS. The simulation results show that multi-cabinet LBOS yields a much better delay/throughput performance than other multi-cabinet optical switches (e.g. Fasnet [8]). © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Performance Evaluation of Optical Burst Switching Networks with Limited Number Wavelength Conversion

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is a switching technology proposed to efficiently support the growing broadband traffic over all optical WDM networks. In this paper, we analyze the blocking performance of an OBS network with limited number wavelength conversion, where only a fraction of input wavelengths can be converted to a set of (but not all) output wavelength. We have derived exact analytical results for the blocking probability for the case of exponentially distributed burst size. Analytical and simulation results indicate that by using wavelength conversion, we can improve the burst blocking performance evidently. These results also indicate that, by using limited number wavelength conversion (for example, the number of wavelengths that can be converted is seven-eighths of the total number of wavelengths), we can achieve almost the same performance as that of using full wavelength conversion.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is proposed as a high speed, flexible and transparent switching technology. It facilitates the efficient integration of both IP and WDM. And it provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of OBS networks is mainly hampered at the network nodes by resource contention. Due to the fact that the random access memory is not available in the optical domain, there exists a real possibility that bursts may contend with one another at a switching node. Therefore, many contention resolutions are proposed, such as fiber delay lines, wavelength conversion, and deflection routing, etc. These resolutions are focus on the node design. They are increase the complexity of the node. But they can not always take some significant effect and make notable gains in cost-efficiency. In this paper, unlike these schemes are focus on the node design, we proposed a novel link architecture named dual-fiber-link (DFL) for OBS networks. We also proposed a relative media access control protocol. We have developed some scenarios to evaluate this architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed link can decrease packet drop probability in terms of orders of magnitude in OBS networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions.
Design and Performance Analysis of an Ip Wavelength Routing Network

Abstract:The network architecture where each node integrates an IP router and an OXC (optical cross-connect) is an attractive paradigm for the next generation optical Internet. IP wavelength routing or POW (packet over wavelengths) is based on this kind of architecture. The goal of this architecture is to switch as much traffic as possible directly by means of OXCs, because IP forwarding is relatively expensive and causes large end-to-end delay by comparison. Based on analyzing the problems and shortcomings of the previous node structure, a novel node structure is proposed to overcome the problems-encountered by the previous scheme. Then two IP switching protocols, IFMP (Ipsilon Flow Management Protocol) and GSMP (General Switch Management Protocol), are extended to support IP wavelength routing networks. Finally, the performance of an IP wavelength routing network is analyzed with self-similar network traffic model. The simulated results show that the higher the network traffic self-similar degree, the higher switching gain the network gets.

Abstract:The rise of big data and cloud computing applications is driving an explosion in the growth of data centers (DCs), and is already resulting in networking bottlenecks and performance degradation. The size and capacity of DCs are being constrained by the traditional packet-based switching architectures due to high energy consumption.Introducing optical circuit switching (OCS) into the packet-based switching architectures becomes a promising solution to reduce energy consumption in future large-scale high-capacity DC networks. Current fiber/wavelength-switching-based OCS, however, requires each lightpath to occupy the full bandwidth of a fiber/wavelength, leading to coarse switching granularity, low bandwidth utilization, and weak scalability. In order to raise bandwidth utilization in high-capacity DC networks, we proposed and realized a novel hybrid packet/fine-grained optical switching architecture in a prototype DC test bed. In this architecture, optical time slice switching (OTSS) is used for sub-wavelength optical switching in the temporal domain. With high-precision time synchronization and accurate control of optical switches, ultra-fine switching granularity and much higher bandwidth utilization can be achieved. Similar to the spectrum fragments in spectrum-sliced elastic optical switching networks, time slot fragments exist in OTSS networks, which hinder the improvement of bandwidth utilization. In this work, we propose a new overlay hybrid packet/OTSS DC network architecture to get full utilization of time slot fragments. Compared with the peer-to-peer hybrid packet/OTSS architecture, the overlay architecture achieves better bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:A detailed examination of evolving traffic characteristics, operator requirements, and network technology trends suggests a move away from nonblocking interconnects in data center networks (DCNs). As a result, recent efforts have advocated oversubscribed networks with the capability to adapt to traffic requirements on-demand. In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of OSA, a novel Optical Switching Architecture for DCNs. Leveraging runtime reconfigurable optical devices, OSA dynamically changes its topology and link capacities, thereby achieving unprecedented flexibility to adapt to dynamic traffic patterns. Extensive analytical simulations using both real and synthetic traffic patterns demonstrate that OSA can deliver high bisection bandwidth (60%-100% of the nonblocking architecture). Implementation and evaluation of a small-scale functional prototype further demonstrate the feasibility of OSA.

Abstract:In traditional lambda-based multigranularity optical networks, a lambda is always treated as the basic routing unit, resulting in low wavelength utilization. On the basis of optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) technology, a novel OCDM-based multigranularity optical cross-connect (MG-OXC) is proposed. Compared with the traditional lambda-based MG-OXC, its switching capability has been extended to support fiber switching, waveband switching, lambda switching, and OCDM switching. In a network composed of OCDM-based MG-OXCs, a single wavelength can be shared by distinct label switched paths (LSPs) called OCDM-LSPs, and OCDM-LSP switching can be implemented in the optical domain. To improve the network flexibility for an OCDM-LSP provisioning, two kinds of switches enabling hybrid optical code (OC) - wavelength conversion are designed. Simulation results indicate that a blocking probability reduction of 2 orders can be obtained by deploying only five OCs to a single wavelength. Furthermore, compared with time-division-multiplexing LSP (TDM-LSP), owing to the asynchronous accessibility and the OC conversion, OCDM-LSPs have been shown to permit a simpler switch architecture and achieve better blocking performance than TDM-LSPs. Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty IP traffic over optical WDM networks. It provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of OBS is mainly hampered at network nodes by burst contention. The contention is serious constraints on the capacity of OBS networks. A leading source of contention is the congestion at congested links where a limited number of wavelengths are shared by a lot of bursts. These congested links are stemming from burst routing algorithms. In this paper, we studied on routing path competition phenomenon. We proposed a differentiated QoS aware multipath routing algorithm for OBS networks. This algorithm is evaluated through extensive numerical studies over a typical topology--the 14-node NSFnet. Results show that it outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of burst blocking probability and link utilization.

Abstract:Many recent studies have convincingly demonstrated that network traffic exhibits a noticeable self-similar nature, which has a considerable impact on network performance, and most studies of optical burst switching (OBS) networks are under a fundamental assumption that full wavelength conversion is available throughout the network. In practice, however, economic and technical considerations are likely to dictate a more limited and sparse deployment of wavelength converters in the optical network. Therefore, we present a novel scheme for OBS networks, called logical cascaded private subnet (LCPN) with start wavelength assignment policy. We define the concept of canoe relative to cluster in self-similar traffic, and introduce a new device named payload segregator at the edge node as a gateway to the core node in OBS Networks. According to the changes in the edge node framework, we put forward the concept of cluster private subnet and canoe private subnet in the core node correspondingly. A new start wavelength assignment policy is proposed for the absence of (full) wavelength conversion capabilities in the core node of OBS Networks. The performance study indicates that, our new scheme is robust under self-similar traffic and wavelength continuity constraint.

Abstract:Abstract Optical fiber has huge bandwidth, as a physical medium, it has good anti electromagnetic interference characteristics and excellent security performance, which is very suitable for the establishment of backbone transmission network. Wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) network based on optical fiber has been widely used. Using optical fiber for information transmission can give full play to the nearly unlimited transmission capacity of optical fiber. With the advent of the information age, data service has become the mainstream business, replacing the original telephone voice service. The great development of data transmission service further promotes the continuous development of WDM network technology. Among all kinds of services in optical network, IP service accounts for the largest proportion. In optical networks, switching is an important technology. Network performance is directly related to switching technology. With the development of optical communication technology, a variety of optical switching devices are introduced into WDM optical network, such as optical packet switching, optical burst switching and so on. This makes WDM layer have the ability of dynamic path establishment and removal similar to IP layer. In order to improve the performance of the optical network and reduce the blocking rate of the network, in WDM optical network, the services are designed in different levels. For some very important services, the highest priority is given, and the optical path channel with better survivability and higher fault tolerance is selected. For general services, it can be designed as a lower level service, and choose the appropriate optical path channel for transmission. The experimental results show that this hierarchical service design method can make more effective use of network resources, reduce the network blocking rate, and improve the overall performance of the network.
Homodyne crosstalk analysis in integrative OADM/OXC in WDM optical transport networks

Abstract:Optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) and optical cross-connect (OXC) are key network elements in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transport networks. Homodyne crosstalk, due to the non-ideal performance of the demultiplexers/multiplexers and the switches, is introduced in OADMs and OXCs and causes system performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a low crosstalk structure for integrative OADM/OXC that implements the function of OADM and OXC simultaneously. For joined adding and dropping, we place a set of 2x2 switches between the demultiplexers and the cross-connect array instead of using larger dimensional cross-connect array. We also theoretical compared the impact of the homodyne crosstalk in the proposed structure and in the conventional integrative OADM/OXC. Simulation result shows that the power penalty caused by homodyne crosstalk can be decreased significantly in the proposed structure. Since the add/drop and cross-connect state of the integrative OADM/OXC changes from time to time for reconfiguration and restoration, and the polarization state of the signals varies constantly due to the thermal and mechanical fluctuations, we statistically analyzed the power penalty distribution. It can be obtained that the power penalty in the proposed structure distributes in a smaller range. This is very helpful to the planning and design of the optical transport networks.
An OBGP-Based Mechanism for Inter-Domain Routing in Optical Networks

Abstract:The authors proposed a novel mechanism based on Optical Border Gateway Protocol (OBGP) that implements inter-domain routing in optical mesh networks.Based on an idea of minimum-hop optimal path and a bypass routing during the request course of lightpath setup phase,they achieved the procedure of dynamic and distribution lightpath establishment efficiently in optical networks,which results in a lower blocking probability than before.They also made resource reservation and configured hardware with a “parallel signaling” mode,which can reduce the end-to-end delay.An experiment of this mechanism using optiman network simulation tools has been presented,which has shown that our study can decrease blocking probability on condition of heavy traffics and make network performance better.It also demonstrates that the three factors,such as network scales,number of wavelengths and traffic loads,have influenced on the network performance.The analysis indicates that a value related to the change of blocking probability approximates the product of end-to-end delay and network scales.

Abstract:In a conventional wavelength-routed network, the bandwidth of one wavelength is considered as the minimum granularity for a given connection request. Therefore, no multiple connection requests can be accepted by using a single wavelength simultaneously. This may cause inefficiency in the bandwidth utilization in some cases. In this paper, the focus is on the variable-bandwidth approach called an optical code (OC)-based path to improve this bandwidth utilization. The concept of OC-enabling paths is investigated, which shows its potential in resolving the above granularity problem inherent to the wavelength-routed network. First, two optical paths, called the OC-labeled and OC division multiplexing (OCDM) paths, are proposed. The former is based upon label switching and statistical multiplexing, while the latter is based upon OCDM. Next, OC-label and OCDM optical cross connects are described to support OC-labeled and OCDM paths, respectively. In this paper, a coherent time-spread OC is adopted. A two-state flow-fluid traffic model is addressed and regarded as the general analysis model. Finally, the performances between these proposed paths are qualified and compared, and numerical results show that the OC-labeled path outperforms the OCDM path under short burst duration time, whereas the OCDM path, provides higher flexibility than the OC-labeled path, owing to its independence of burst duration time

Abstract:Fiber optic rings are widely deployed in metropolitan area networks (MAN). These rings currently employ architectures and protocols that are neither optimized for nor scalable to the network demand. Therefore, emerging technologies are being pushed to replace the traditional architectures. Among these technologies, optical burst switching (OBS) is an effective and promising technology. In this study, a novel architecture, dual-fiber OBS (DOBS), is proposed. This architecture has similar functions to those of fiber delay lines, partial wavelength conversion and deflection routing. A theoretical model is developed to evaluate the performance of DOBS, which is compared with single-fiber and simple two-fiber schemes by introducing them into ring and mesh MAN in simulations. The results reveal that DOBS can exponentially reduce the burst dropping probability. Moreover, since DOBS can be implement using commercially available devices and dark fibers, it is commercially viable in metro networks.

Abstract:With the double growth of Internet traffic every six months, data exceeding voice traffic is only a problem of time, so, the network based on circuit switching will evolve to network based on packet switching unavoidably. But as for optical Internet, because of lacking of optical logical devices and optical buffer, very high bit-rate all-optical packet switching is difficult to realize. On the other hand, the new propose, optical burst switching, is simple compared to optical packet switching, and has better performance, thus, OBS is the prefered we think. We introduce the studying state-of-the-art of optical packet switching and optical burst switching, compare their characteristics and at last, point out the possible directions of OBS.

The analytical results clearly show that logical cascaded private subnet scheme can yield better performance in terms of block probability than traditional OBS Networks, and logical cascaded private subnet with start wavelength assignment policy has the potential to improve the block probability by more than one order of magnitude compared with traditional OBS Networks, helping reduce the performance gap with respect to full wavelength conversion.

Abstract:With the advent of several new Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) technologies, todays networking environment is dramatically altered and is experiencing a rapid transformation. One of the most important is Ethernet based C-RAN, in support of which many products such as optical Ethernet switches have recently appeared on the market. This paper presents the performance analysis of such switches with respect to Packet Loss Ratio (PLR), Latency and Packet Delay Variation (PDV). We employed the Simula based on Discrete Event Modelling on Simula (DEMOS), a context class for discrete event simulation to simulate a cut-through optical Ethernet switch under two types of traffics: High priority (HP) traffic and Low priority (LP) traffic. In this way, the paper evaluates the optical Ethernet switch performance quantitatively. The results obtained from the simulator showed that the high quality of service was reflected on HP traffic and the low quality of service in LP traffic. Hence, HP traffic can be used for transporting Radio over Ethernet (RoE) traffic while LP traffic can used for transporting time insensitive application. It is also found that HP traffic experiences a PDV equals to the duration of maximum sized LP traffic in Optical Ethernet switch.

Novel Approaches to Improve the Capacity of Optical Packet-Switched Networks Without Optical Buffers.

Abstract:Under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of optical packet-switched networks is mainly hampered at the network node by resource contention. The contention is serious constraints on the capacity of the network. Therefore, most of the research activities are focus on the node design. Unlike the existing research activities are focus on the node design, we proposed a new concept--server vision for optical packet-switched networks in this paper. From the point of view of server vision, the network resource is categorized into three types---the access server, the node server and the link server, based on the fact that the network resource performs the different function for the traffic. After present the server vision optical network, we presented two novel approaches--two link server solutions-- to erase the resource contention. One solution is the packet calking, and the other solution is the dual-fiber link. We have developed some scenarios to validate these solutions. Simulation results show that the dual-fiber link can reduce the contention in terms of orders of magnitude in optical packetswitched networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions.
