Abstract:There are many kinds of micronutrient elements contained in foods that are vital to human health. The strong dependence of the toxicity and bioavailability of microelement upon their chemical forms has made the speciation and bioavailability vital to the food quality control and nutrition evaluation. A brief introduction to the high performance liquid chromatography hyphenated with inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry ( HPLC-ICP-MS) is given. The hyphenated technique which based on several chromatographic separation mechanisms plays an important role in speciation analysis for its advantage of high sensitivity, high selectivity, wide linearity, low detection and multi-microelement determination simultaneously. The application of HPLC-ICP-MS in microelements speciation analysis and bioavailability research in foods concerning the selenium speciation analysis in selenized yeast, selenium-enriched garlic, selenium nutritional supplement and other foods, the arsenic speciation analysis in sea-products and farm products, the other microelements speciation analysis and the investigation of metabolic and bioactivity of microelement in organism is reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:In order to obtain a well understanding of the toxicity and ecological effects of trace elements in the environment, it is necessary to determine not only the total amount, but also their existing species. Speciation analysis has become increasingly important in making risk assessments of toxic elements since the toxicity and bioavailability strongly depend on their chemical forms. Effective separation of different species in combination with highly sensitive detectors to quantify these particular species is indispensable to meet this requirement. In this paper, we present the recent progresses on the speciation analysis of trace arsenic, mercury, selenium and antimony in environmental and biological samples with an emphasis on the separation and detection techniques, especially the recent applications of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenated to atomic spectrometry or mass spectrometry.

Stability of selenium and its speciation analysis in water using automatic system separation and HR-ICP-MS measurement

Abstract:A simple and convenient method has been developed for the pre-concentration and separation of inorganic selenium species from environmental water samples using anion exchange chromatographic column combined with high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) measurement. 75Se(IV) and 75Se(VI) were prepared and used as tracers during the experiments. The volatility of selenium during solution evaporation was investigated to establish a reliable water samples pretreatment procedure. The parameters which affect the uptake of Se(IV) and Se(VI) on Dowex1 × 8 resin was optimized and the procedure for Se(IV) and Se(VI) separation was proposed. Both Se(IV) and Se(VI) are retained on the column in natural or alkaline solution with high distribution coefficient. The successive gradient elution of pre-concentrated species of selenium with HNO3 solution allows to differentiate between them. Se(IV) and Se(VI) finally were eluted with 0.05 mol/L HNO3 and 5.0 mol/L HNO3, respectively. The proposed method has been successfully verified using the certified reference materials (CRMs) of real water samples, and spiked recoveries for real samples were 98%-104% with 5% relative standard deviations (RSDs). The developed procedure is proved to be reliable and can be used for the rapid determination of selenium species in environmental water samples.

Abstract:The quantitative speciation of selenium in biological systems is highly important for evaluating health status and elucidating transformations of Se species in physiological and pathological processes. Hyphenation of capillary electrophoresis with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICPMS) is promising for this purpose. However, the unfavorable or insufficient sensitivity for selenium analysis with CE-ICPMS seriously limits its practical applications in biological analysis, e.g., cell analysis. Therefore, it is crucial to improve the detection sensitivity for Se species. In this study, CE-ICPMS sensitivities for five selenium species (selenocystamine (SeA), methyl-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-1-seleno-β- d -galactopyranoside (SeSug 1), selenomethionine (SeMet), Se-Methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys) and selenocystine (SeCys)) were improved by in-capillary stacking via pH gradient between the zones of sample-leading buffer and the incorporation of isopropanol. The improvement on sensitivity of up to 9.9 folds was achieved in different biological samples, with LODs of 0.29–0.52 μg L −1 . This approach was further applied for Se speciation in cell lysate, urine and culture medium. It showed that SeMet was more readily reduced in the medium and favorably accumulated by HepG2, HuH-7 and HCCLM3 cells with respect to SeSug 1 and MeSeCys. In cells, all the three Se species were largely transformed into other Se species. Furthermore, more than 70 % of SeMet reduced in medium was transformed into unknown Se species after 48-h interaction with cells.

Abstract:The knowledge of elemental speciation and interaction between elemental species and ligands (including biomolecules) can provide an understanding of their transport, transformation, bioavailability, metabolic pathways and toxicity in organisms. By taking advantage of the powerful separation capabilities of capillary electrophoresis (CE) in capillaries/microchannels, and the atomic specificity, multi-elemental characteristics and extremely high sensitivity of inductively coupled plasma spectrometries (ICPs), the CE-ICP hyphenation is one of the most preferred choices in elemental speciation and element-ligand/element-biomolecule interaction as well as the indirect determination of non-metallic compounds. This article provides an overview of electrophoresis in capillaries and microchannels coupled to an ICP with respect to interfaces and applications from elemental speciation, element-ligand interaction to indirect determination.

Abstract:Speciation analysis is a key aspect of modern analytical chemistry, as the toxicity, environmental mobility, and bioavailability of elemental analytes are known to depend strongly on an element’s chemical species. Henceforth, great efforts have been made in recent years to develop methods that allow not only the determination of elements as a whole, but also each of its separate species. Environmental analytical chemistry has not ignored this trend, and this review aims to summarize the latest methods and techniques developed with this purpose. From the perspective of each relevant element and highlighting the importance of their speciation analysis, different sample treatment methods are introduced and described, with the spotlight on the use of modern nanomaterials and novel solvents in solid phase and liquid-liquid microextractions. In addition, an in-depth discussion of instrumental techniques aimed both at the separation and quantification of metal and metalloid species is presented, ranging from chromatographic separations to electro-chemical speciation analysis. Special emphasis is made throughout this work on the greenness of these developments, considering their alignment with the precepts of the Green Chemistry concept and critically reviewing their environmental impact.

Speciation of Selenium Nanoparticles and Other Selenium Species in Soil: Simple Extraction Followed by Membrane Separation and ICP-MS Determination

Abstract:The application of selenium nanoparticle (SeNP)-based fertilizers can cause SeNPs to enter the soil environment. Considering the possible transformation of SeNPs and the species-dependent toxicity of selenium (Se), accurate analysis of SeNPs and other Se species present in the soil would help rationally assess the potential hazards of SeNPs to soil organisms. Herein, a novel method for speciation of SeNPs and other Se species in soil was established. Under the optimized conditions, SeNPs, selenite, selenate, and seleno amino acid could be simultaneously extracted from the soil with mixtures of tetrasodium pyrophosphate (5 mM) and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (1.2 μM), while inert Se species (mainly metal selenide) remained in the soil. Then, extracted SeNPs can be effectively captured by a nylon membrane (0.45 μm) and quantified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Other extracted Se species can be separated and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ICP-MS. Based on the difference between the total Se contents and extracted Se contents, the amount of metal selenide can be calculated. The limits of detection of the method were 0.02 μg/g for SeNPs, 0.05 μg/g for selenite, selenate, and selenocystine, and 0.25 μg/g for selenomethionine, respectively. Spiking experiments also showed that our method was applicable to real soil sample analysis. The present method contributes to understanding the speciation of Se in the soil environment and further estimating the occurrence and application risks of SeNPs.
Speciation of Inorganic and Organic Species of Mercury and Arsenic in Lotus Root Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometric Detection in One Run.

Abstract:Multi-elemental speciation analysis in a single run reduces costs, waste and time, and also sample consumption, which is favorable to a large set of instable samples. This work demonstrates mercury and arsenic speciation in a single run using high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric detection (HPLC/ICP-MS). Thiol compounds in mobile phases interfered with the elution of arsenite because of coordination action, which was overcome by gradient elution (elution of As(III) by thiol-free mobile phases at first). Four arsenic forms (As(III), DMA, MMA and As(V)) and three mercury species (Hg(II), MeHg and EtHg) were separated and detected by HPLC/ICP-MS using 4 mM tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) (pH 6.0) in the first 1.0 min and 4 mM TBAH + 20 mM L-cysteine (pH 6.0) in the next 9.0 min. The detection limits were obtained at 0.078 for As(III), 0.081 for DMA, 0.078 for MMA and 0.15 mu g L-1 for As(V), and 0.016 for Hg(II), 0.027 for MeHg and 0.032 mu g L-1 for EtHg, and the reproducibilities (50 mu g L-1 for each As-species and 10 mu g L-1 for each Hg-species) were all lower than 3.7%. The proposed method was successfully applied for speciation analyses of arsenic and mercury in five lotus roots, which indicated DMA (3.5-7.9 mu g kg(-1)) as the only arsenic species and MeHg (0.6-1.0 mu g kg(-1)) as the only mercury species. Analyses of two certified reference materials demonstrated good agreement between determined values and certified values. All results prove its advantages including high sensitivity and high analytical efficiency, which are beneficial for routine speciation analyses of arsenic and mercury in a single run in environmental and food fields.

Abstract:Selenium is an indispensable trace element for humans and other organisms; however, excessive selenium in water can jeopardize the aquatic environment. Investigations on the biogeochemical cycle of selenium have shown that anthropogenic activities such as mining, refinery, and coal combustion mainly contribute to aquatic selenium pollution, imposing tremendous risks on ecosystems and human beings. Various technologies thus have been developed recently to treat selenium contaminated water to reduce its environmental impacts. This work provides a critical review on the applications, characteristics, and latest developments of current treatment technologies for selenium polluted water. It first outlines the present status of the characteristics, sources, and toxicity of selenium in water. Selenium treatment technologies are then classified into three categories: 1) physicochemical separation including membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation/precipitation, 2) redox decontamination including chemical reduction and catalysis, and 3) biological transformation including microbial treatment and constructed wetland. Details of these methods including their overall efficiencies, applicability, advantages and drawbacks, and latest developments are systematically analyzed and compared. Although all these methods are promising in treating selenium in water, further studies are still needed to develop sustainable strategies based on existing and new technologies. Perspectives on future research directions are laid out at the end.

Abstract:Analytical atomic spectrometry is a well-established and widely-used analytical technique for the sensitive detection of inorganic elements in diverse samples. Sample pretreatment methods are still a critical part of elemental analysis, which are usually used to remove interfering matrix components and preconcentrate the targets of interest before analysis. Significant advances in the development of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for elemental analysis have been made in recent years. This review focuses on the applications of sample separation and preconcentration techniques for analytical atomic spectrometry, including liquid phase (micro)extraction, cloud point extraction, solid phase (micro)extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, chemical vapor generation as well as hyphenated techniques. This review presents several applications of the above sample pretreatment methods in recent years, whose advantages and drawbacks were also discussed.

Abstract:Elemental selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have gained a growing interest due to their low toxicity, high antioxidant activity, good biocompatibility, and versatility. This review provides a summary of the recent advancements in SeNPs synthesis, characterization, properties, and applications. The challenges and the future trends of SeNPs research are also discussed. Selenium is an essential trace element that plays a crucial role in various physiological activities, exerting a significant impact on human health. Selenium deficiency can lead to the development of several diseases, while excessive doses can be toxic. In recent years, there is a growing interest in elemental selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) due to their good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and high antioxidant activity, making them suitable for numerous applications. Speciation and Distribution of Copper in A Mining Soil Using Multiple Synchrotron-Based Bulk and Microscopic Techniques

Abstract:Molecular-level understanding of soil Cu speciation and distribution assists in management of Cu contamination in mining sites. In this study, one soil sample, collected from a mining site contaminated since 1950s, was characterized complementarily by multiple synchrotron-based bulk and spatially resolved techniques for the speciation and distribution of Cu as well as other related elements (Fe, Ca, Mn, K, Al, and Si). Bulk X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed that soil Cu was predominantly associated with Fe oxides instead of soil organic matter. This agreed with the closest association of Cu to Fe by microscopic X-ray fluorescence (U-XRF) and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) nanoanalysis, along with the non-occurrence of photoreduction of soil Cu(II) by quick Cu L3,2-edge XANES spectroscopy (Q-XANES) which often occurs when Cu organic complexes are present. Furthermore, bulk-EXAFS and STXM-coupled Fe L3,2-edge nano-XANES analysis revealed soil Cu adsorbed primarily to Fe(III) oxides by inner-sphere complexation. Additionally, Cu K-edge μ-XANES, L3,2-edge bulk-XANES, and successive Q-XANES results identified the presence of Cu2S rather than radiation-damage artifacts dominant in certain microsites of the mining soil. This study demonstrates the great benefits in use of multiple combined synchrotron-based techniques for comprehensive understanding of Cu speciation in heterogeneous soil matrix, which facilitates our prediction of Cu reactivity and environmental fate in the mining site.
Nanosemiconductor-based photocatalytic vapor generation systems for subsequent selenium determination and speciation with atomic fluorescence spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Abstract:We reported novel Ag-TiO(2)- and ZrO(2)-based photocatalytic vapor generation (PCVG) systems as effective sample introduction techniques for further improving the sensitivity of the atomic spectrometric determination of selenium for the first time, in which the conduction band electron served as a "reductant" to reduce selenium species including Se(VI) and convert them directly into volatile H(2)Se, which was easily separated from the sample matrix and underwent more effectively subsequent atomization and/or ionization. These two PCVG systems helped us to overcome the problem encountered in the most conventional KBH(4)/OH(-)-H(+) system, in that Se(VI) was hardly converted into volatile selenium species without the aid of prereduction procedures. The limits of detection (LODs) (3σ) of the four most typical Se(IV), Se(VI), selenocystine ((SeCys)(2)), and selenomethionine (SeMet) species were, respectively, down to 1.2, 1.8, 7.4, and 0.9 ng mL(-1) in UV/Ag-TiO(2)-HCOOH, and 0.7, 1.0, 4.2, and 0.5 ng mL(-1) in UV/ZrO(2)-HCOOH with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 5.1% (n = 9 at 1 μg mL(-1)) when using atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) under flow injection mode. They reached 10, 14, 18, and 8 pg mL(-1) in UV/Ag-TiO(2)-HCOOH, and 6, 7, 10, and 5 pg mL(-1) in UV/ZrO(2)-HCOOH with the RSDs lower than 4.4% (n = 9 at 10 ng mL(-1)) when using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). After the two PCVG systems were validated using certified reference materials GBW(E)080395 and SELM-1, they were applied to determine the total Se in the selenium-enriched yeast sample and used as interfaces between high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and AFS or ICPMS for selenium speciation in the water- and/or enzyme-extractable fractions of the selenium-enriched yeast.

Abstract:<p>As an essential trace element, selenium participates in numerous important life processes and plays a significant role for human beings. Owning to its unique physical, chemical and biochemical properties, selenium has attracted numerous attentions in biosensing, catalysis, diagnosis as well as treatment of diseases. Traditional research concerns are mainly focused on organoselenium compounds or polymers. However, their practical application is often hampered by their intrinsic drawbacks, such as complex preparation, high toxicity and low recycling efficiency. With the development of nanotechnology, numerous functional selenium-based nanomaterials such as selenium nanoparticles, quantum dots, graphene oxide-selenium nanocomposites, and nanoparticles, etc. have been constructed and shown great promises in various field of research. In this review, new constructed selenium-based nanomaterials are included and we will systematically introduce recent research progress of selenium-based nanomaterials in areas as diverse as biomedical diagnosis and imaging, antibacteria and anti-virus, cancer therapy and cytoprotection, etc. The current challenges and future prospects are also summarized and discussed. We hope this review may provide a comprehensive understanding on the latest progress of selenium-based nanomaterials and promote their future development.</p>

Abstract:Elemental speciation is reviewed as a new approach to trace metals analysis. The importance of metal speciation relative to total metal analysis is considered. Various types of chromatographic separation methods using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection are discussed. A brief introduction to the instrumental techniques is given, as well a discussion of coupling the instrumentation. Various chromatographies are included with an emphasis on liquid chromatography (LC). Gas chromatography (GC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) are also discussed. Application examples contrast and compare the advantages and disadvantages of ICP- MS with other detection methods. Summary tables are included for two of the LC methods.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) is an essential metalloid and is categorized as emerging anthropogenic contaminant released to the environment. The rise of Se release into the environment has raised concern about its bioaccumulation, toxicity, and potential to cause serious damages to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem. Therefore, it is extremely important to monitor Se level in environment on a regular basis. Understanding Se release, anthropogenic sources, and environmental behavior is critical for developing an effective Se containment strategy. The ongoing efforts of Se remediation have mostly emphasized monitoring and remediation as an independent topics of research. However, our paper has integrated both by explaining the attributes of monitoring on effective scale followed by a candid review of widespread technological options available with specific focus on Se removal from environmental media. Another novel approach demonstrated in the article is the presentation of an overwhelming evidence of limitations that various researchers are confronted with to overcome achieving effective remediation. Furthermore, we followed a holistic approach to discuss ways to remediate Se for cleaner environment especially related to introducing weak magnetic field for ZVI reactivity enhancement. We linked this phenomenal process to electrokinetics and presented convincing facts in support of Se remediation, which has led to emerge ‘membrane technology’, as another viable option for remediation. Hence, an interesting, innovative and future oriented review is presented, which will undoubtedly seek attention from global researchers.
