Abstract:Using Chinese urban household survey data,we find that income inequality has a negative(positive)impact on households\u0027 consumption(savings),even after controlling family income.We argue that people save to improve their social status when social status is associated with pecuniary and non-pecuniary benefits.Rising income inequality can strengthen the incentives of status-seeking savings by increasing the benefits of improving status and enlarging the wealth level that is required for status upgrading.We also find that the negative effect on consumption is stronger for poorer and younger people,and income inequality stimulates more educational investment,all consistent with the status seeking hypothesis.

Abstract:The paper investigates income inequality in urban China by using 2002—2007 UHS datasets.It finds that:(1) The Gini coefficient rose first and then fell,and it's 0.342,0.361 and 0.349 for 2002,2004 and 2007 separately.(2) The effects of real estate market and finance market on enlarging income inequality are increasingly stronger.Income from wealth has become the third important factor affecting income inequality,whose effects are just inferior to those of wage income and net public transfer income,and its contribution rate has arrived at 7.3% in 2007.(3) Real estate investments can enlarge income inequality more greatly than finance investments because of the higher investment threshold and the lasting rise of house prices.

Abstract:Using the nationally representative Urban Household Income and Expenditure Survey (UHIES) conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of China, we document a steadily rising trend in income and consumption inequality during the period from 1992 to 2003 in urban China. Despite the rising urban inequality over time, the social welfare of urban residents unambiguously improved because every income group saw their income and consumption increase over this period (higher income groups experienced faster increases). Moreover, consumption inequality follows income inequality very closely. Labor income inequality accounts for about two‐thirds of total income inequality quite consistently over time. We find that only about one‐third of urban inequality can be attributed to observable individual choices and characteristics, of which education has increasing explanatory power, while regional differences become less important over time. We also find that restructuring of the SOE sector, urbanization, and globalization are important contributing factors to rising overall urban inequality and the within‐group inequality not accounted for by observable individual choices and characteristics.

Abstract:Compared to income or wealth, household consumption expenditures can reveal households’ real economic well-being derived from income and other material resources. This chapter uses the CHIP data from 1995, 2002, and 2013 to investigate the structure and inequality of consumption expenditures in urban China. Overall inequality in urban household consumption expenditures as measured by the Gini coefficient decreased slightly from 1995 to 2002 but then increased to 2013. The percentile ratio of p90/p10, however, increased continuously during these years. Basic food consumption inequality was much smaller than inequality of overall consumption, and as consumption grew over time, the food share of consumption fell steadily—from 34 percent in 1995 to 24 percent in 2013. Housing consumption inequality was much larger than overall consumption inequality but it decreased over time. Housing’s share of total consumption, however, rose markedly from 23 percent in 1995 to 38 percent in 2013.

Abstract:This research uses nationally representative data to study how economic resources and inequalities are associated with life satisfaction of Chinese residents. We construct economic resource and inequality measures from expenditure rather than from income, after confirming that expenditure inequality is a better measure in the Chinese context. We find that economic inequalities in general are negatively associated with life satisfaction, and that this association is larger for inequalities in the lower half of the distribution than those in the upper half of the distribution. We further explore the mechanisms under which inequality can be associated with life satisfaction, and find that aspiration is potentially one important channel.

Abstract:Growing research shows that information technology accelerates economic growth and development, but the effect of internet penetration on inequality is less well documented, especially about consumption inequality. On the one hand, internet lowers transaction costs and offers equal access to online products especially beneficial for remote and poor populations, seemingly reducing inequality. On the other hand, uneven access to the internet may increase divergences. This study examines the relationship between internet penetration and consumption inequality. Using data from 155 counties available from 2010‐2016 China Family Panel Studies, this study examines whether internet penetration potentially impacts consumption inequality considering regional heterogeneity. Based on fixed‐effect models and the two‐stage least squares regressions, results suggest the internet penetration may increase consumption inequality measured by the Gini index. Furthermore, higher education and over a certain internet penetration rate buffer the positive impact of the internet. In some cases, the internet has smaller positive or even negative impacts on consumption inequality in regions with higher education levels and over threshold penetrations.

Abstract:We use CHIP data from 1995, 2002, and 2013 to investigate inequality in urban household consumption expenditures. Overall inequality in urban household consumption expenditures measured by the Gini coefficient decreased slightly from 0.33 in 1995 to 0.32 in 2002, but it increased to 0.36 in 2013. This followed the same trend as that of urban income, though to a greater extent. However, the percentile ratio of p90/p10 shows that consumption inequality always increased. In addition, basic food consumption inequality was much smaller than overall consumption, with its contribution decreasing from 20 percent in 1995 and 2002 to 14 percent in 2013 and its share decreasing steadily from 34 percent in 1995 to 30 percent in 2002 and further to 24 percent in 2013 as the level of overall consumption moved up in the distribution during each of the three years. Housing consumption inequality was much larger than overall consumption but it was decreasing over time, with its contribution to overall consumption inequality increasing 35 percent in 1995 and 2002 and then to 40 percent in 2013 and its share also sharply increasing from 23 percent in 1995 to 30 percent in 2002 and further to 38 percent in 2013. In addition, its share reveals an upward slope as the level of overall consumption increased in each of the three years.

Abstract:Wealth and income inequality has attracted intensive interest in recent years due to its great significance both in reality and theory. Inspection on individual behaviors in a microscopic view would be useful in clarifying possible reasons for inequality and proper policies for reducing inequality and poverty. This paper presents an inhomogeneous agent-based model to explore the emergence of income inequality, in which individuals with varied qualities work, consume and invest. In despite of the small attribute difference for individuals, large income/wealth inequality and class differentiation naturally occur through a mechanism of capital (investment) income, which shares some analogy to the endogenous growth. The obtained income distribution is well described with an exponential law at smaller values and a power law at large values. Education, which is modeled as increasing the average productivity and decreasing the productivity width, is able to improve the equality and lower the Gini coefficient. The uplift of salary level hampers the speed of investment (industrialization) and the short-term income, but it brings long-term benefits of higher efficiency and equality. These results support the potential capacity of the model as a basic and open framework to investigate multifarious questions regarding income inequality. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Proper, reasonable gap in income is not only the important condition of stimulating competition and developing economy, it is also the essential condition of positional consumption. But excessive gap will not only have negative influence on people's social psychology and the improvement of real consumption, but also lead to malformed positional consumption behavior, even lead to the problem of social stability. Therefore, when analyzing income distribution, we should take a new perspective of positional consumption to study its effect on social stability. The analyzing of positional consumption helps us to survey the effectiveness of reformation from the satisfaction degree of people's comparison. It also helps us to weight the advantages and disadvantages and to take micro measures to reduce the friction and resistance in reformation.

Abstract:Prior research has shown the relationship between objective economic inequality and searching for positional goods. It also investigated the relationship between social class and low income with conspicuous consumption. However, the causal relationship between economic inequality (the difference in wealth between individuals and groups living in a shared context and consumer behavior) has been less explored. Furthermore, there are also few studies looking for the psychological mechanisms that underlie these effects. The current research’s main goal is to analyze the consequences of perceived economic inequality (PEI) on conspicuous and status consumption and the possible psychological mechanisms that could explain its effects. Furthermore, the current research aims to examine whether there is a causal relationship between PEI and materialism preferences and attitudes toward indebtedness. This work includes two preregister experimental studies. In the Study 1 ( n = 252), we manipulated PEI and its legitimacy through a 2 (high vs. low inequality) × 2 (Illegitimate vs. legitimate) between-participants experiment. Results showed a main effect of PEI on status consumption, status seeking, status anxiety, materialism, and attitude toward indebtedness. No interaction effect between legitimacy and inequality was found. In the Study 2 ( n = 301), we manipulated the PEI through the Bimboola Paradigm. We replicated the effect of PEI on status consumption, status seeking, and materialism and found that status seeking mediated the relationship between PEI and status and conspicuous consumption. Economic inequality affects consumer behavior and favors consumption preferences for products that provide desirable symbolic values associated with status. These results could have important implications in the interpersonal and intergroup processes, including those related to consumption and purchase.

Abstract:The past researches about social stratification and consumption focused on how to reflect the distinction of different social stratum or to achieve the reproduction of social status,o-verlooked to discuss the mechanism between the social stratification and consumption systemati-cally.This study focuses on the division of consumer preferences among different social strata, embedded in the framework of class analysis and historical change.Using the repeated design da-ta from China General Social Survey 2003 and 2013,the research finds that,on the surface,peo-ple's preferences in the material consumption,cultural consumption and leisure activities etc,are obviously increased in 2013 compared with 2003,but this trend is not significant after controlling the main social fators,demonstrating a kind of"kick upstairs"trend.Nevertheless,the relation-ship between social status and consumer preferences continued to be related robustly in ten years, the consumer preferences of the professionals,managers,and the routine non -manual workers have significantly advantage over the supervisors,technical workers,self -employed owners, and unskilled workers etc,forming a clear boundary or distinction.From the perspective of class analysis,social stratum still has significant explanatory power in China's social transformation, and the distinction of consumer preferences may further solidify the boundary between the social strata.

Abstract:This paper adapts ideas from social identity theory to set out a new framework for modelling conspicuous consumption. Notably, this approach can explain two stylised facts about conspicuous consumption that initially seem at odds with one another, and to date have required different families of models to explain each: (1) people consume more visible goods when their neighbours' incomes rise, but (2) consume less visible goods when incomes of those with the same race in a wider geographic area rise. The first fact is typically explained by `Keeping up with the Joneses' models, and the second by signalling models. Our model also explains related features of conspicuous consumption: that the rich are more sensitive to others' incomes than the poor, and that the effect of income inequality on consumption differs qualitatively across groups. Importantly, it explains this fourth stylised fact without falling back on differences in preferences across groups, as required in other models. In addition, our model delivers new testable predictions regarding the role of network structure and income inequality for conspicuous consumption.

Abstract:Building on theories explaining social outcomes of economic inequality, our research examined the psychological impact of inequality on the desire for wealth and status. Our studies provide both experimental (Studies 1 and 3, Ns = 321 and 596) and correlational (Study 2; N = 141,477 from 73 countries and regions) evidence that higher inequality heightens people’s desire for wealth and status. Notably, this effect of inequality on desire is independent of the influence of societal wealth. Moreover, our results reveal social class differences in why inequality fuels motivations: Lower-class individuals are more likely to respond to higher inequality with a heightened desire reflecting self-improvement concerns, whereas upper-class individuals are more likely to respond with a heightened desire reflecting social comparison concerns. These findings suggest that higher inequality creates an environment of restlessness in which both the poor and the rich feel obliged to seek wealth and status, albeit for different reasons.

Abstract:Based on AIDS,this paper researches the impacts of income difference on Chinese citizens' consumption behaviors of Food,Cloth,Durable Consumable,Medical,Transportation,Communication,Education,Entertainment and House,which are the common or popular consumption goods nowadays.Citizens are classified into seven groups by their incomes and been shown by dummy variables in the models.The models,estimated by 3SLS,clearly reveal the differences of consumption behaviors by income group and overcome the shortcomings of estimation by area group.Through the analysis,we can make the conclusions that income difference does affect the citizens' consumption behaviors,especially consumption of durable consumable,but it has little effects on consumption of cloth and education.

Abstract:This paper tests using survey data from China whether individual health is associated with income and community-level income inequality. Although poor health and high inequality are key features of many developing countries, most of the earlier literature has drawn on data from developed countries in studying the association between the two. We find that self-reported health status increases with per capita income, but at a decreasing rate. Controlling for per capita income, we find an inverted-U association between self-reported health status and income inequality, which suggests that high inequality in a community poses threats to health. We also find that high inequality increases the probability of health-compromising behavior such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Abstract:Using household data from 1988 to 2018, we confirm that the increase in income inequality in China has come to a halt in recent years but show that inequality in wealth and consumption continues to increase. We report a clear convergence of inequality across the different dimensions of income, consumption, and wealth. Households at the top of one dimension are increasingly located at the top of the other two dimensions. The mechanisms for such convergence across dimensions are analyzed. The savings rate links income and consumption, while capital accumulation is the central mechanism linking income and wealth. In addition, the wealth and income structure contribute to intensifying the convergence trend. We argue that the relatively high level of inequality in China may continue since income, consumption and wealth are increasingly reinforcing each other.

Abstract:In our paper, we test how the social security system affects citizens’ consumption behavior through narrowing the income gap between residents with different social status and decreasing the uncertainty of income and cost. In the theoretical part, we firstly extend the model of Keynes to test the income distribution hypothesis; then, we use the coefficient of absolute risk aversion (CARA) model and a two-period model to test the uncertainty hypothesis. Empirically, (1) we use China’s data (2003–2012) to test the theoretical results, and find that the social security system has a positive effect on consumption by reducing the income gap; (2) according to a 10-year panel data (2003–2012), we find that reducing income uncertainty can increase consumption. Besides, medical insurance and endowment insurance have a positive impact on consumption by reducing citizens’ cost uncertainty, but to different extents.

Abstract:Increased conspicuous consumption motivated by status-seeking behavior can undermine the gains in well-being derived from economic growth. Using expenditure surveys from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay, we assess visible consumption motivated by status seeking behaviour, analyzing different hypotheses about the role of externalities driven by social comparisons and income inequality. Specifically, we provide evidence for the relevance of different reference groups, assessing comparisons with richer (Veblen effects), poorer and similar profile groups (Duesenberry effects). We show that individuals are affected by multiple reference groups. Regarding between-group inequality, we find that individuals mainly seek to differentiate themselves from poorer groups, rather than imitating richer ones. In all cases, average reference group income of similar profile individuals is negatively related to visible consumption. Meanwhile, within-reference group responses are relevant in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico: increased visible goods consumption is associated with larger relative income gaps. In Argentina and Brazil, the sensitivity of visible goods expenditures to income is higher among households located above the reference threshold, which is consistent, again, with more affluent households trying to signal status by differentiating themselves from the most deprived group members. Meanwhile, in the case of Mexico, there is a symmetric response.
