Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) have emerged as cutting-edge solutions in the realm of composite materials, revolutionizing the polymer industry. Traditionally, the augmentation of polymer properties relies on the integration of various micrometer-sized fillers such as carbon black, calcium carbonate, glass fibers, and talc. However, this approach often requires high filler concentrations, resulting in elevated material viscosities and processing challenges. Recent advancements have highlighted the remarkable potential of incorporating nanomaterials (NMs) into polymers. Even at minimal quantities, these nanofillers exhibit a profound impact on enhancing polymer properties while preserving processability. However, challenges such as poor dispersion, agglomeration, and interfacial adhesion remain significant hurdles to achieving optimal performance. In this review, a new classification of polymer non-covalently modified nanomaterials (PNCMNMs) and polymer-grafted nanomaterials (PGNMs) as the most efficient methods to fabricate High-Performance PNCs are introduced. Furthermore, recent studies have addressed the influence of significant factors on these methods, such as the type of NMs and polymers, grafting density, length of the polymer, surface modification and so on are examined. For surface modification, coupling agents that facilitate the attachment of polymer chains to nanomaterial surfaces are discussed. Overall, this study offers valuable insights into the advancements, challenges, and future prospects of PNCMNMs and PGNMs, paving the way for their continued development and widespread use in diverse applications.
