Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenides (2D TMDs) have a significant "innate" advantage in gas sensing applications, showing many advantages such as high sensitivity, fast response, low energy consumption and ability to work at room temperature. Compared to the single 2D TMDs, gas sensor based on 2D TMD heterojunctions exhibit superior gas sensing performance. Here, we will systematically summarize the research progress of 2D TMD heterojunction gas sensor, especially the key scientific questions such as structure design, structure-activity relationships and sensing mechanism ls for nano-heterojunction based on 2D TMDs and metal oxide, metal sulfides, carbon nanomaterials and quantum dots. Innovations in sensing materials and sensing mechanisms have a significant scientific impact on improving sensing performance and extending sensing multi-functions. Through the further study of the gas sensing mechanisms based on nano-heterojunction, we seek to realize the artificial design and controllable preparation of nanoheterojunctions, and improve the high sensitivity and selective identification and detection of the target gas at room temperature. In the design of nano-heterojunction structure, 2D TMDs are used as conductive subject material to grow various nanostructures on the surface. Considering the acid-basic property of nano-heterojunctions, work function, the polarity of the target gas molecules, and the redox reaction between the heterojunctions and gas molecules, we choose moderate object nanomaterials to construct nano-heterojunctions based on 2D TMDs. We control the size of nanomaterials less than twice the size of the electron depletion layer, and the quantum confinement effect of the nanoparticles is fully utilized. Here the nanoparticles act as the "antenna molecule" or "probe molecule" of the sensing. Nano-heterojunctions based on 2D TMDs were designed to obtain highly sensitive selective identification and detection for target gas molecules.
