Abstract:Postmodification methods are effective tools in preparing functional polymers, and novel end-group reactions have attracted much attention from researchers for postmodification applications. Here, a new high-efficiency postmodification method is proposed, which can change bromine-containing polymers to functional polymers in one step. Phenol, 1-hydroxynaphthalene, and 4-(2-phenyldiazenyl)-phenol (Azo-OH) are successfully grafted onto the polymeric branch chain of bromine-containing polymers, i.e., homopolymer, bromoethyl methyl acrylate, (pBMEA) and amphiphilic block copolymer p(BMEA)-b-p(mPEG), with a high grafting rate that is near 100%. Also, the micelles of the postmodified amphiphilic block copolymer p(BMEA-Azo)-b-p(mPEG) are broken up under ultraviolet irradiation. The proposed method can be used as a platform to prepare a variety of stimuli-responsive polymeric nanoparticles.

Abstract:A facile synthetic route to functional hyperbranched polymers is developed. Arylene bipropiolates (HC C-CO2-Ar-O2C-C CH; 1-4) are readily prepared from a one-step esterification reaction between commercially available propiolic acid and arylene diols. Polycyclotrimerizations of 1-4 proceed regioselectively in reflux dimethylformamide (DMF), giving hyperbranched poly[1,3,5-tri(aroxy-carbonyl)phenylene]s (hb-P1-hb-P4) of high molecular weights (M-w up to similar to 8.3 x 10(5)) in high yields (up to 82%). The polymers possess perfect 1,3,5-regiostructures and high degrees of branching (DB similar to 88%). Little weights are lost when the polymers are heated to 390 degrees C under nitrogen or 380 degrees C in air. The polymers are highly transparent, allowing almost all light in the entire visible spectral region to transmit through. Thin solid film of hb-P1 shows high refractive indices (RI = 1.6255-1.681) in the wavelength region of 400-1700 nm, extremely high modified Abbe number (nu(D)' = 1030.7), and very low optical dispersion (D' = 0.00097). Its RI values can be modulated and its thin films can be cross-linked by UV irradiation, enabling ready generation of negative photoresist patterns.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents a new synthetic route to hyperbranched polymer. An arylene bipropiolate monomer, dimethylmethylenebis(1,4-phenylene) bipropiolate, was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction of bisphenol A with propiolic acid. Polycyclotrimrtization of the monomer was effected by reflux in dimethylformamide (DMF), producing a soluble hyperbranched poly(aroxycarbonylphenylene) in a good yield. The polymer was perfectly branched with a degree of branching of 100%.

Abstract:Exploration of efficient and powerful polymerization methodologies is of crucial importance for polymer science. Among the established polymerization methodologies, the polymerization of internal alkynes is less developed and still in its infancy stage. In this work, a new polymerization of internal alkynes of bromoalkynes and phenols is established, and polymers with high weight-average molecular weights (up to 47 600) are obtained in excellent yields (up to 95.2%) in as short as 1 h without using a complex transition-metal catalytic system. The resultant polymers possess good solubility, exhibit high thermal stability, and could display typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics upon introduction of tetraphenylethylene, a typical AIE-active luminogen. Moreover, the polymers could be post-modified by a thiophenol derivative because they contain bromovinyl groups in each repeating unit, enabling it to possess a higher refractive index than that of the pristine one. Therefore, it displays a convenient platform for polymer functionalization. This work not only establishes a new polymerization of bromoalkynes and phenols but also provides a powerful strategy for the preparation and modification of functional polymers under mild reaction conditions without using transition-metal catalysts.

Abstract:Post-polymerization modification is a facile and efficient method for the generation of diverse functional polymers. Herein, polymer-based molecular arrays were obtained by using sequential modification. First, periodic polyketone P0 was synthesized via acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of α,ω-diene M0. Oxime chemistry was employed in the functionalization of the ketone moieties of P0 using three commercially available alkoxyamine hydrochlorides. Finally, electrophilic alkoxyetherification, a four-component reaction, was employed in the modification of alkene groups on polymer main chains using N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), tetrahydrofuran, and fluorinated carboxylic acid. Complete conversion of reactive sites was observed in both steps, and the two modification reactions exhibited excellent compatibility. The thermal properties of the polymers as thermal stability, and glass transition and melting behaviours were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Abstract:The three-dimensional structures of hyperbranched materials have made them attractive in many important applications. However, the preparation of hyperbranched materials remains challenging. The hyperbranched materials from addition polymerization have gained attention, but are still confined to only a low level of branching and often low yield. Moreover, the complication of synthesis only allows a few specialized monomers and inimers to be used. Here we report a 'Vinyl Oligomer Combination' strategy; a versatile approach that overcomes these difficulties and allows facile synthesis of highly branched polymeric materials from readily available multi-vinyl monomers, which have long been considered as formidable starting materials in addition polymerization. We report the alteration of the growth manner of polymerization by controlling the kinetic chain length, together with the manipulation of chain growth conditions, to achieve veritable hyperbranched materials, which possess nearly 70% branch ratios as well as numerous vinyl functional groups.

Abstract:Water is an abundant, natural, and sustainable resource. However, it has not been used as a monomer for the construction of polymers. In this paper, we take this challenge and develop a new polymerization of water and triple-bond based monomers of isocyanides and bromoalkynes, and polyamides with high molecular weights (up to 41 700) and stereoregularities (the fraction of Z-isomer generally higher than 80%) are obtained in excellent yields (up to 98.1%) under mild reaction conditions. The polymers possess good solubility and exhibit high thermal stability and refractive index. The tetraphenylethene-containing polymers show the unique aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE) characteristics. Moreover, thanks to their containing bromoacrylamide groups in the main chains, these polyamides could be easily easily postmodified through different reactions, providing a convenient platform for polymer functionalization. Thus, this work not only established a stereoselective polymerization of water and triple-bond based monomers but also provided a powerful strategy for the preparation of functional polyamides under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract:Here, we report the synthesis of new thermoresponsive hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) via one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) copolymerisation of poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA, Mn = 475 g/mol), poly(propylene glycol)methacrylate (PPGMA, Mn = 375 g/mol), and disulfide diacrylate (DSDA) using 2-cyanoprop-2-yl dithiobenzoate as a RAFT agent. DSDA was used as the branching agent and to afford the HBPs with reducible disulfide groups. The resulting HBPs were characterised by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) of these copolymers, which are in the range of 17–57 °C. Moreover, the studies on the reducibility of HBPs and swelling behaviours of hydrogels synthesized from these HBPs were conducted. The results demonstrated that we have successfully synthesized hyperbranched polymers with desired dual responsive (thermal and reducible) and crosslinkable (via thiol-ene click chemistry) properties. In addition, these new HBPs carry the multiplicity of reactive functionalities, such as RAFT agent moieties and multivinyl functional groups, which can afford them with the capacity for further bioconjugation and structure modifications.

Abstract:Pure organic, heterogeneous, metal-free, and visible light-active photocatalysts offer a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional metal-based catalysts. Here we report a series of microporous organic polymers containing photoactive conjugated organic semiconductor units as heterogeneous photocatalysts for a visible-light-promoted, highly selective bromination reaction of electron-rich aromatic compounds using HBr as a bromine source and molecular oxygen as a clean oxidant. Via a simple Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction, the microporous organic polymers were obtained by cross-linking of organic semiconductor compounds with defined valence and conduction band positions. The utilization of the simply prepared porous polymer-based photocatalytic systems opens new opportunities toward a sustainable and efficient material design for catalysis.

Abstract:We demonstrate that polynorbornene containing dibromomaleimide side group is a novel polymer platform for post-polymerization modification. Polymer P0 was obtained through ring-opening metathesis polymerization of monomer 2 by using Grubbs third generation catalyst. Subsequently, P0 was chemically modified with 1-butanethiol and benzyl mercaptan to generate P1 and P2, respectively. In this way, the dibromomaleimide units on polymer side chain were quantitatively converted to dithiolmaleimide moieties. All the polymer samples exhibited good thermal stability and relatively high glass transition temperature. Meanwhile, the effects of substituent and solvent on fluorescent properties of the polymers were elucidated.

Abstract:Fluorinated polymers have attracted increasing attention in a broad range of areas, and access to such polymers with low-cost agents and simple conditions would offer improved application opportunities for both academia and industry. An efficient preparation of a variety of semifluorinated poly(meth)acrylates without the use of a fluorinated iniferter/initiator or a solvent via photo-controlled radical polymerization is herein reported. The polymerizations can be efficiently switched between ON and OFF both in the presence and absence of a photoredox catalyst in response to visible light while maintaining a linear increase in polymer molar mass with conversion and first order kinetics. As demonstrated with gel permeation chromatography analysis and kinetic investigations, catalyzed photopolymerizations provide polymers with narrower molar mass distributions, shorter induction times and higher conversions in comparison with catalyst-free reactions, representing a reliable and efficient synthetic approach starting off from fluorine-free agents. The high chain-end fidelity of the polymer was confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS measurements and chain-extension experiments. Furthermore, the method using fluorine-free iniferters facilitated surface fabrication with fluoropolymers, providing highly hydrophobic materials. These results illustrate the simplicity and utility of the light-controlled polymerization of semifluorinated monomers.

Abstract:Alkyne polycyclotrimerizations have become efficient synthetic tools for constructing hyperbranched polyphenylenes. However, the polycyclotrimerization reactions of internal alkynes are rarely reported. Herein, we present the first example of RhCl3-catalyzed polycyclotrimerization of activated internal diynes to prepare hyperbranched polymers. The polymerization reactions of diphenylpropiolates (1a–c) were performed in toluene under reflux in the presence of RhCl3·3H2O and N,N-diisopropylethylamine (DIPEA), affording soluble hyperbranched poly(triphenylbenzoate)s (hb-PTPBs), hb-P1a–c, with high molecular weights (up to 187000) and high regioregularities (fraction of 1,2,4-triphenylbenzoate isomer up to 88.2%) in satisfactory yields. The degree of branching of hb-P1a was determined to be 0.73. The resultant hb-PTPBs are thermally stable, with 5% weight loss temperatures higher than 330 °C. Abstract:Modification of commodity aromatic polymers is highly desirable for accessing materials with new properties. The long-standing challenge for such approaches lies in the development of catalytic methods that can functionalize the aromatic polymers with high precision while preserving the molecular weight and distribution of the starting polymers without any alteration. Herein, we report a highly efficient AuCl3-catalyzed site selective aromatic C-H halogenation of polystyrene. The most important feature of this method is that the degree of halogenation can be precisely controlled by simply changing the loading of the halogenating agent, thus allowing the tuning of functional group density in an accurate and predictable manner. Various functional groups, including NH2 and Bpin, can be installed through effective derivatization of the resultant brominated polystyrene, thus making the method a valuable strategy for the synthesis of value-added materials with tailored properties.

Abstract:A facile method for modifying a polymer with specific chemical groups was conducted through the incorporation of hydroxylbenzene groups into an ozone-treated polymer. The hydroxylbenzene pendent groups on the functionalized polymer provided reactive sites for further chemical reaction and modification. A poly(vinylidene fluoride) possessing benzoxazine pendent groups (PVDF-Bz) was prepared to demonstrate this polymer modification. The performance of the polymer functionalization and chemical structure characterization were determined with Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. PVDF-Bz was a crosslinkable polymer, and the crosslinked poly(vinylidene fluoride) exhibited improved mechanical properties.

Abstract:We report on the facile synthesis of a range of new linear functionalized polyesters by controlled atom transfer radical polyaddition reactions. One bis-styrenic type monomer, 1,2-bis(4-vinylbenzyloxy) ethane (AA), and two bis-methacrylate type ATRP initiators, 1,2-bis(2-bromoisobutyryloxy) ethane (BB) and bis[2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy) ethyl] disulfide (BssB), were synthesized. The polymerizations of monomer AA with BB and BssB were carried out in anisole at 0 degrees C, using Cu/CuBr2 coupled with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)octylamine (BPMOA) as the catalyst. The polymerization kinetics were investigated and the polymers were characterized by GPC and NMR, both confirming the step-wise mechanism with the formation of the expected linear polyesters having pendent bromides. When BssB was used, additional disulfide groups were incorporated in the polyester main chain, imparting a tunable degradation mechanism to the polyester. Moreover, the pendent bromides on the polymers could serve as initiation sites or precursors to azides to prepare biodegradable graft copolymers. This has been proven by two examples, reactivating the pendent bromides at room temperature to initiate the ATRP of other methacrylates, and transforming these groups into azido-groups by substitution reaction followed by click chemistry with alkynyl-terminated polyethylene glycol.

Abstract:Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of bridged bicyclic lactones has been proved to be effective method for degradable polyesters, especially recyclable polymers. Herein, we reported a novel bromo-functionalized bridged bicyclic lactone ( MBr ) from a biobased olefin carboxylic acid. The investigation of polymerization system showed that urea/1,8-Diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene (DBU) catalyzed ROP of MBr is well-controlled. Quantitative monomer conversion (98 %) was achieved and bromo-functionalized polyesters ( PMBr ) with high molecular weights (up to 91800 g/mol) were produced. Cu(0)-mediated controlled radical polymerization of methyl acrylate with PMBr as macroinitiators afforded grafted copolymers. This strategy would provide more convenience for the synthesis of bromo-functionalized polyesters and grafted copolymers.

Abstract:A highly reactive thiourea-contained polycondensate, poly(dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-thione) (poly(DHPMT)) has been facilely synthesized via the Biginelli polycondensation using thiourea and a difunctional compound containing benzaldehyde and β-keto ester groups as monomers. The thiourea moiety in the polymer structure has similar reactivity as the thiourea, thus the poly(DHPMT) is an excellent polymer precusor for preparing new functional polymers through the postpolymerization modification (PPM) strategy. After simple reaction with functional haloalkanes, the parent poly(DHPMT) could be almost completely converted (>99%) to daughter polymers containing alkene or alkyne side groups. Then, the daughter polymers have been further transferred to granddaughter polymers through another PPM via thiol-ene or Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions. Besides, when 3-phenylpropargyl chloride was used as the reactant, a bright yellow fluorescent polymer could be simply achieved due to the in situ formed conjugated heterocycle in the polymer structure, further demonstrating the diversity of the functional polymers through PPM. Considering the easily available monomers, simple polycondensation, and the excellent reactivity of the thiourea moiety in the polymer structure, this thiourea-contained Biginilli polycondensate might be a versatile platform for new functional polymer preparation.

Abstract:The dibromomaleimide derivative, N-(4-bromobutyl)-dibromomaleimide (dBMIB), is found to be a highly efficient coupling agent to dimerize thiol-terminated hydrophilic polymers by substituent reaction. When mono-thiol poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO45-SH) is mixed with dBMIB in an equivalent molar feed in water, a dimer of PEO45 with a maleimide unit located at the chain center, (PEO45)2MIB, is obtained quantitatively. Moreover, the butylene bromide of (PEO45)2MIB is transferred into a butylene azide, which is allowed to react with alkynyl-terminated polystyrene to give a A2B miktoarm star polymer via a copper-catalyzed azidealkyne cycloaddition coupling reaction.

Abstract:Hyperbranched aliphatic polycarbonates (HBPCs) have attracted significant attention in the field of biomedical application owing to their abundant end groups, biocompatibility, and nontoxic degradation products. However, their practical application is hampered by tedious synthesis procedures. The present work described a novel organo-catalyzed “A1+B2”-ring-opening polymerization (ROP) using a monofunctional primary alcohol (A1) as an initiator and a bicyclic carbonate monomer (B2) for the straightforward synthesis of HBPCs under mild conditions. No gelation was observed up to 90% conversion of the cyclic carbonate ring. HBPCs with molar masses in the range from 7 to 20 kg/mol were obtained. Based on the “A1+B2”-ROP, HBPCs bearing a variety of functionalities including alkene, alkyne, aldehyde, furan, azide, and mPEG groups, which are of great significance in the field of click chemistry, have been successfully prepared by using functional alcoholic initiators. This polymerization strategy allowed for precise control over the HBPC structure: (1) the hyperbranched polymer (HBP) backbone can be adjusted by design of a bicyclic carbonate monomer with various linkages; (2) the use of an appropriate initiator leads to the introduction of functional end groups. Overall, the “A1+B2”-ROP provides an efficient method for preparing a variety of HBPs like hyperbranched polyester, polyether, polyphosphate, and poly(amino acid) with complex architectures in a single step.
