Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme system inspired by the natural photosynthesis in green plants has attracted extensive attention owing to its advantages such as simultaneously wide range light absorption, highly efficient charge separation and strong redox ability. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel all-solidstate direct Z-scheme photocatalyst of Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 by depositing Ag3PO4 nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO2/TiO2 hierarchical branched nanowires (BNWs), where the CeO2/TiO2 BNWs act as a novel substrate for the well dispersed nano-size Ag3PO4. The Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits excellent ability of photocatalytic oxygen evolution from pure water splitting. It is suggested that the Z-scheme charge transfer route between CeO2/TiO2 and Ag3PO4 improves the redox ability. On the other hand, the cascade energy level alignment in CeO2/TiO2 BNWs expedites the spatial charge separation, and hence suppresses photocatalytic backward reaction. However, it is difficult to realize a perfect excitation balance in Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 and the composite still surfers photo-corrosion in photocatalysis reaction. Nevertheless, our results provide an innovative strategy of constructing a Z-scheme system from a type-II heterostructure and a highly efficient oxygen evolution catalyst. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:With the constant increase in demand for fuel energy, research on the exploration of renewable energy sources is becoming significantly critical. Herein, photocatalysis for the direct conversion of solar to chemical energy has attracted tremendous attention. In particular, because of the energy band edges mainly formed by p orbitals or s-p hybridized states, resulting in narrow band gaps and highly dispersive band structures, photocatalysts constructed from p-block elements exhibit remarkable visible-light photocatalytic activity. Taking bismuth oxyhalide-based photocatalysts, a typical family of p-block semiconductors, as an example, the following perspective mainly focuses on three significant strategies, including constituent adjustment, vacancy engineering, and the construction of heterostructures, on the design and construction of bismuth-based solar-conversion systems with high efficiencies in terms of H2 evolution, CO2 reduction, and N2 fixation. Abstract:Recently, the bismuth-based (Bi-based) Z-scheme photocatalysts have been paid great attention due to their good solar energy utilization capacity, the high separation rate of their photogenerated hole-electron pairs, and strong redox ability. They are considerably more promising materials than single semiconductors for alleviating the energy crisis and environmental deterioration by efficiently utilizing sunlight to motivate various photocatalytic reactions for energy production and pollutant removal. In this review, the traits and recent research progress of Bi-based semiconductors and recent achievements in the synthesis methods of Bi-based direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are explored. The recent photocatalytic applications development of Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts in environmental pollutants removal and detection, water splitting, CO2 reduction, and air (NOx) purification are also described concisely. The challenges and future perspective in the studies of Bi-based Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts are discussed and summarized in the conclusion of this mini review.

Abstract:A novel zinc sulfide quantum dot (ZnS QD)/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosphere/bismuth-enriched bismuth oxyiodide (Bi4O5I2) tandem heterojunction photocatalyst is fabricated through two-step solvothermal, calcination and one-step hydrothermal strategies. The successfully constructed core-shell nanostructure can increase the interface area and the active sites of the composite photocatalysts. The formation of a Z-scheme/Type-II tandem heterojunction favors the transfer and spatial separation of charge carriers, in which Bi4O5I2 plays a bridging role to connect ZnO and ZnS. Simultaneously, the participation of Bi4O5I2 significantly shortens the band gap of the composite photocatalyst. This dual functional 4O5I2/ZnS composite photocatalyst has a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 578.4 µmol g−1 h−1 and an excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency for bisphenol A (BPA) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (TCP). In addition, cycling tests show that 4O5I2/ZnS has a high stability, which is favorable for practical applications. This novel 4O5I2/ZnS Z-scheme/Type-II tandem heterojunction photocatalyst will provide new ideas for the multichannel charge transfer of other highly efficient heterojunction photocatalysts.

Abstract:Construction of heterojunctions is conventionally regarded as the prevailing technique to enhance solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting and photodegradation of pollutants. Herein, we report a novel design of a ternary Bi2O3/Bi/ZnIn2S4 system, which was facilely synthesized to satisfy these stringent criteria for sunlight photocatalytic removal of organic and ionic pollutants and hydrogen evolution. Bi2O3/Bi/ZnIn2S4 could degrade 2,4-dinitrophenol (94.6%), tetracycline (96.5%), and Cr6+ (96.3%) effectively under visible light and give a hydrogen production rate of 482.5 μmol·g−1·h−1 under visible light. Based on first-principles calculations and electrochemical results, our system could be identified as a Z-scheme. Photocorrosion of the sulfide is prohibited while the catalytic capabilities are simultaneously benefited due to lowered bandgap in light harvesting, internal electric fields in charge separations, and surface plasmonic resonance enhanced electron boost.

Abstract:Nature-inspired artificial Z-scheme photocatalyst offers great promise in solar overall water splitting, but its rational design, construction and interfacial charge transfer mechanism remain ambiguous. Here, we design an approach of engineering interfacial band bending via work function regulation, which realizes directional charge transfer at interface and affords direct Z-scheme pathway. Taking BiVO4 as prototype, its oxygen vacancy concentration is reduced by slowing down the crystallization rate, thereby changing the work function from smaller to larger than that of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN). Consequently, the photoinduced charge transfer pathway of BiVO4/PCN is switched from type-II to Z-scheme as evidenced by synchronous illuminated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, the direct Z-scheme BiVO4/PCN shows superior photocatalytic performance in water splitting. This work provides deep insights and guidelines to constructing heterojunction photocatalysts for solar utilization.
2D Bismuthene Metal Electron Mediator Engineering Super Interfacial Charge Transfer for Efficient Photocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:The interfacial charge transfer still limits the photoactivity of artificial Z-scheme photocatalysts although they showed complementary light absorption and a strong photoredox ability. In this study, layered metallene is designed as an efficient electron mediator for constructing a C3N4/bismuthene/BiOCl 2D/2D/2D Z-scheme system. This bismuthene serves as a bridge processing superior charge conductibility, abundant metal–semiconductor contact sites, and the shortened charge diffusion distance, enhancing the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction activity and stability. Density functional theory calculations show that the bismuthene creates a built-in electric field and congregates interfacial electrons, which is confirmed by the stable and consistent emission of the ultrafast transient absorption spectra. Abstract:All-solid-state Z-Scheme photocatalysts have attracted significant attention due to their great potential for solar fuel production. However, delicately coupling two individual semiconductors with a charge shuttle by a material strategy remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a new protocol of natural Z-Scheme heterostructures by strategically engineering the component and interfacial structure of red mud bauxite waste. Advanced characterizations elucidated that the hydrogen-induced formation of metallic Fe enabled the effective Z-Scheme electron transfer from γ-Fe2 O3 to TiO2 , leading to the significantly boosted spatial separation of photo-generated carriers for overall water splitting. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first Z-Scheme heterojunction based on natural minerals for solar fuel production. Thus our work provides a new avenue toward the utilization of natural minerals for advanced catalysis applications.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysts have attracted increased attention due to their great potential for solving energy and environmental problems. The formation of Z-scheme photocatalytic systems that mimic natural photosynthesis is a promising strategy to improve photocatalytic activity that is superior to single component photocatalysts. The connection between photosystem I (PS I) and photosystem II (PS II) are crucial for constructing efficient Z-scheme photocatalytic systems using two photocatalysts (PS I and PS II). The present review concisely summarizes and highlights recent state-of-the-art accomplishments of Z-scheme photocatalytic systems with diverse connection modes, including i) with shuttle redox mediators, ii) without electron mediators, and iii) with solid-state electron mediators, which effectively increase visible-light absorption, promote the separation and transportation of photoinduced charge carriers, and thus enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. The challenges and prospects for future development of Z-scheme photocatalytic systems are also presented.

Abstract:The novel Z-scheme CdS/Bi4O5Br2 heterostructure was successfully synthesized by a simple mixed-solvent thermal method. It proved that the Z-scheme CdS/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction was constructed by XRD, SEM, TEM and XPS. The synthesis of CdS nanospheres on ultra-thin Bi4O5Br2 nanosheets to form a heterojunction interface was beneficial to the dispersion and transfer of the photogenerated electron–hole pairs, which was demonstrated by PL, i-t and EIS. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra attested CdS/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction enhanced utilization of visible light. The Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance for degradation process of CIP and TC than that of pure CdS and Bi4O5Br2. In addition, recycling tests declared that the Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction compared with single CdS had higher stability and durability, attributing to effectively alleviating photocorrosion of CdS. It could be seen from the trapping agent experiment that superoxide free radicals and hydroxyl free radicals were the main active substances. The possible photocatalytic mechanism of the Z-scheme 0.5-CdS/Bi4O5Br2 heterojunction under visible light irradiation was proposed.

Abstract:The Bi-based hierarchical multi-component photocatalytic system is an important player in energy and environmental catalysis due to its full-spectrum light absorption and stable separation of photo-generated charges. In this study, a novel family of iodine doped Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 heterojunctions was successfully developed by a facile ionic liquid assisted solvothermal method. A visible light photocatalytic H2 production rate of 664.5 μmol g−1 h−1 (0.3I-Bi2O2CO3/Bi2WO6 with 3% Pt) has been durably obtained, much higher than those of pristine and undoped counterparts. The photocatalysts are also capable for persistent pollutant and dye degradation. Through electrochemical and spectroscopic tests and density functional theory calculation, the enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to formation of the Z-scheme photocatalyst. Therein, the lowered and indirect bandgap and heterojunctional band alignment spontaneously benefit visible light harvesting, electron-hole pair separation, and proton reduction. Besides a facile synthesis for effective photocatalysis, the Z-scheme mechanism is hoped to facilitate the design and realization of similar systems for photocatalytic H2 evolution and organic hazards decontamination.
Preparation and study of photocatalytic performance of a novel Z-scheme heterostructured SnS2/BaTiO3 composite

Abstract:SnS2 was hybridized with BaTiO3 to form an efficient and cheap Z-scheme heterojuncted SnS2/BaTiO3 photocatalyst by depositing nanosized SnS2 on the surface of commercial micro-sized BaTiO3. Multiple characterization techniques have been employed to study the as-prepared samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results reveal that SnS2 partly covers BaTiO3. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) investigation exhibit that the heterojunction SnS2/BaTiO3 has improved the separation and transfer of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. UV–Vis-DRS and Mott-Schottky measurement give the estimated E g, E CB, and corresponding calculated E VB, which meet the requirements of Z-scheme. The photocatalytic efficiency (degradation is 98% within 20 min) has been greatly enhanced much higher than pure SnS2. Free radical trapping experiments indicates that superoxide (•O2 −) is the dominant active species of the reaction system. The improved photocatalytic performance, as well as the free radical trapping experiments support the Z-scheme mechanism for composite photocatalyst SnS2/BaTiO3. This work reveals that Z-scheme composite SnS2/BaTiO3 has prospect in treating organic pollution in waste water.

Abstract:A series of ZnmIn2S3+m photocatalysts were synthesized to show tunable band gap energy with the variation of Zn/S atomic ratio. The junction of ZnmIn2S3+m and BiVO4 led to intimate interfacial contacts. Both experimental and theoretical results implied that electrons flowed from ZnmIn2S3+m to BiVO4 at the ZnmIn2S3+m/BiVO4 interface to form built-in electric field due to the variation of Fermi level, which promised Z scheme charge transfer feature for improving separation of charge carriers for enhanced photocatalytic performance. A higher degree of charge transfer process occurred for Zn2In2S5/BiVO4 heterostructure promised stronger built-in electric field, higher charge separation efficiency and improved photocatalytic activity in comparison to ZnIn2S4/BiVO4 and Zn3In2S6/BiVO4 heterojunctions. The optimal hydrogen production rate of Zn2In2S5/BiVO4 photocatalyst is 8.42 mmol•g−1•h−1 with apparent quantum yield of 22.32 % at 435 nm, which is about 2.2 and 1.5 times higher than that of ZnIn2S4/BiVO4 and Zn3In2S6/BiVO4, respectively.

Designing Bi2O3-Sn3O4 Z-scheme Heterojunction on TiO2 NTs for Improving Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:The design of semiconductor heterostructures as the effective strategy are recognized to enhance the photocatalytic capacity of photocatalysts for the settlement of energy shortage and pollutant treatment. To efficiently utilize solar energy, the Bi2O3-Sn3O4 nanoparticles with the Z-scheme energy band structure were synthesized on TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2 NTs) by the solvothermal deposition method. The TiO2 NTs/Bi2O3-Sn3O4 exhibited the outstanding photocatalytic dye degradation and Cr(VI) removal, which was much higher than those of single Bi2O3 or Sn3O4 sensitized samples. The H2 evolution test indicated that the Bi2O3-Sn3O4 cosensitization dramatically enhanced the photocatalytic H2 generation ability of TiO2 NTs with the rate of 58.75 mu mol center dot h- 1 center dot cm- 2. The high photoelectric conversion was also confirmed, and the outstanding photocatalytic performance was further revealed by the contrast experiment. The plausible photocatalytic mechanism based on the ESR and capturing experiments indicated that the Z-scheme energy band structure induced the photoelectron separation and the generation of center dot O2 and center dot OH radicals, which was the decisive role for the improved photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Natural or artificial Z-scheme systems have been applied for tackling environment pollution and energy crisis owing to the high reduction and oxidation ability driven by the unique interface charge-pairs transfer. However, a dual Z-scheme system combining direct Z-scheme and indirect Z-scheme is seldom adopted for photocatalysis. In this study, the self-assembly photocatalyst Ag@AgI/BiOI/g-C3N4 was successfully fabricated based on the dual Z-scheme system combining direct and indirect Z-scheme systems. The synergistic effect of the dual Z-scheme system towards tetracycline (TC) degradation over the hybrid composites under visible light irradiation was investigated. Compared with single Z-scheme system composites of BiOI/g-C3N4 and AgI/BiOI, the as-synthesized composite of AgI/BiOI/g-C3N4 exhibited superior photocatalytic performance under identical conditions. The dual Z-scheme system was verified by active species generation (O-center dot(2)-, (OH)-O-center dot and h(+)), trapping experiments and ESR analysis. Furthermore, the photostability and practical application were investigated based on a recycle experiment and controllable experiments. A possible dual Z-scheme mechanism for enhanced photocatalytic performance with ultra-fast charge-separation efficiency and high redox ability was proposed. This study will provide new insight to the design of novel heterojunction composites based on the dual Z-scheme system to deal with organic pollution and energy crisis.
Challenges of Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanisms

Abstract:Z-scheme photocatalytic systems have been extensively studied since they are supposed to promote carrier separation while boosting redox abilities. Herein, we analyze the challenges of photocatalytic mechanisms in liquid-phase and all-solid-state Z-scheme systems from various perspectives, including thermodynamics, charge-transfer dynamics, applicability, and practical synthesis. Notably, in this opinion, we analyze the challenges for electron transfer in liquid-phase Z-scheme systems, where photocatalyst nanoparticles (NPs) and redox couples are constantly under dynamic motion and the transfer of free electrons via water media is prohibited. These problems ultimately led to the flourishing of step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunctions.

Novel Ag-Bridged Z-Scheme CdS/Ag/Bi2WO6 Heterojunction: Excellent Photocatalytic Performance and Insight into the Underlying Mechanism

Abstract:The construction of semiconductor heterojunction photocatalysts that improve the separation and transfer of photoinduced charge carriers is an effective and widely employed strategy to boost photocatalytic performance. Herein, we have successfully constructed a CdS/Ag/Bi2WO6 Z-scheme heterojunction with an Ag-bridge as an effective charge transfer channel by a facile process. The heterostructure consists of both CdS and Ag nanoparticles anchored on the surface of Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The photocatalytic efficiency of the CdS/Ag/Bi2WO6 system was studied by the decontamination of tetracycline (TC) and Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420). The results exhibited that CdS/Ag/Bi2WO6 shows markedly higher photocatalytic performance than that of CdS, Bi2WO6, Ag/Bi2WO6, and CdS/Bi2WO6. The trapping experiment results verified that the •O2− and h+ radicals are the key active species. The results of photoluminescence spectral analysis and photocurrent responses indicated that the CdS/Ag/Bi2WO6 heterojunctions exhibit exceptional efficiency in separating and transferring photoinduced electron−hole pairs. Based on a series of characterization results, the boosted photocatalytic activity of the CdS/Ag/Bi2WO6 system is mostly due to the successful formation of the Ag-bridged Z-scheme heterojunction; these can not only inhibit the recombination rate of photoinduced charge carriers but also possess a splendid redox capacity. The work provides a way for designing a Z-scheme photocatalytic system based on Ag-bridged for boosting photocatalytic performance.
