Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">With the development of nuclear energy, large amounts of radionuclides are inevitably released into the natural environment. It is necessary to eliminate radionuclides from wastewater for the protection of environment. Nanomaterials have been considered as the potential candidates for the effective and selective removal of radionuclides from aqueous solutions under complicated conditions because of their high specific surface area, large amounts of binding sites, abundant functional groups, pore-size controllable and easily surface modification. This review mainly summarized the recent studies for the synthesis, fabrication and surface modification of novel nanomaterials and their applications in the efficient elimination and solidification of radionuclides, and discussed the interaction mechanisms from batch experiments, spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations. The sorption capacities with other materials, advantages and disadvantages of different nanomaterials are compared, and at last the perspective of the novel nanomaterials is summarized.</p>

Abstract:Removal of contaminants in wastewater, such as heavy metals, has become a severe problem in the world. Numerous technologies have been developed to deal with this problem. As an emerging technology, nanotechnology has been gaining increasing interest and many nanomaterials have been developed to remove heavy metals from polluted water, due to their excellent features resulting from the nanometer effect. In this work, novel nanomaterials, including carbon-based nanomaterials, zero-valent metal, metal-oxide based nanomaterials, and nanocomposites, and their applications for the removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater were systematically reviewed. Their efficiency, limitations, and advantages were compared and discussed. Furthermore, the promising perspective of nanomaterials in environmental applications was also discussed and potential directions for future work were suggested.

Abstract:With the fast development of nanomaterials and nanotechnology, environmental nanotechnology has attracted increasing concerns in the past decades. In the field of water treatment, nanotechnology exhibited great potential in improving the performance and efficiency of water decontamination as well as providing a sustainable approach to secure water supply. In this review, the current applications of nanomaterials in water and wastewater treatment were briefly discussed. The synthesis and physiochemical properties of diverse free nanomaterials, including carbon based nanomaterial, metal and metal oxides nanoparticles as well as noble metal nanoparticles, were focused on, and their performance and mechanisms towards removal of various contaminants were discussed. When concerning the large-scale application in water treatment, nanoparticles have to face some inherent technical bottlenecks such as aggregation, difficult separation, leakage into the contact water, as well as potential adverse effect imposed on ecosystem and human health. The emerging nanocomposite materials integrate the merits of functional nanoparticles and varying solid hosts of large size, and exhibit great advantages in scaled-up application. This review particularly covered the topic of environmental nanocomposites, such as those of organic and inorganic supports, nanocomposite membranes and magnetic nanocomposites. The advantages and perspectives of various nanocomposites are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have been extensively studied for heavy metal ions and dye removals from wastewater. This article reviews the role of nanomaterials as effective adsorbents for wastewater purification. In recent years, numerous novel nanomaterial adsorbents have been developed for enhancing the efficiency and adsorption capacities of removing contaminants from wastewater. The innovation, forthcoming development, and challenges of cost-effective and environmentally acceptable nanomaterials for water purification are discussed and reviewed in this article. This review concludes that nanomaterials have many unique morphological and structural properties that qualify them to be used as effective adsorbents to solve several environmental problems.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Japan recently announced the plan to discharge over 1.2 million tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean, which contained hazardous radionuclides such as 60Co, 90Sr, 125Sb, 129I, 3H, 137Cs, and 99TcO4-, etc. The contaminated water will pose an enormous threat to global ecosystems and human health. Developing materials and technologies for efficient radionuclide removal is highly desirable and arduous because of the extreme conditions, including super acidity or alkalinity, high ionic strength, and strong ionizing radiation. Recently, advanced porous material, such as porous POPs, MOFs, COFs, PAFs, etc., has shown promise of improved separation of radionuclides due to their intrinsic structural advantages. Furthermore, emerging technologies applied to radionuclide removal have also been summarized. In order to better deal with radionuclide contamination, higher requirements for the design of nanomaterials and technologies applied to practical radionuclide removal are proposed. Finally, we call for comprehensive implementation of strategies and strengthened cooperation to mitigate the harm caused by radioactive contamination to oceans, atmosphere, soil, and human health.

Abstract:Both metal hydroxides and chitosan have been recognized as effective scavengers for nuclide ions. However, the aggregation of metal hydroxides and the weak mechanical strength of chitosan beads greatly restricts their application. Herein, the in-situ formed Ni(OH)(2) nanoparticles was immobilized in chitosan matrix to obtain a novel hybrid sorbent (CSNi) for U(VI) adsorption. The CSNi showed high affinity for U(VI) sorption, with the inner-sphere complexation as the main mechanism. The maximum mono-layer adsorption capacity for U(VI) at 298 K reached 164.2 mg/g. The U(VI) sorption was endothermic and spontaneous, and kinetically followed the pseudo-second-order model. These findings highlight the possibility of using CSNi for efficient removal of U(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract:Radioactive substances have been widely used in many industrial sectors, e.g. nuclear power station, biomedical engineering, etc. With increasing applications of nuclear technology, more and more radioactive wastewater is being generated via different channels, which indeed is posing an emerging challenge and threat to the environment and human health. Given such a situation, this review attempts to offer a holistic view with regard to the state of the art of technology for decontamination of radioactive wastewater as well as shed lights on the challenges forward. Different from reclamation of other types of wastewaters, the most challenging issue in decontamination of radioactive wastewater is the effective stabilization and solidification of soluble radioactive nuclides present in wastewater, which are critical for final disposal. Moreover, the potential risk of human exposure to wastewater radiation needs to be carefully assessed, and this issue should also be taken into consideration in the selection, design and operation of the radioactive wastewater treatment process. These clearly differentiate the treatment principle of radioactive wastewater from those of traditional industrial and municipal wastewaters. Lastly, the challenges from the perspectives of technology development, environmental and human health impacts and possible solutions forward are also elucidated.

Abstract:In this study, we focused on the effective disposal of radioactive wastewater through the development of nanofiltration membranes using biomass materials. We developed functionalized nanofilms using a bio-derived polymer for the decontamination of nuclear wastewater. The synthesis involved a straightforward interfacial polymerization (IP) process, followed by post-functionalization with polyethyleneimine (PEI). We investigated the impact of curdlan self-assembly on membrane separation performance, both pre- and post-IP reaction. Simultaneous self-assembly of curdlan and PEI grafting led to membranes exhibiting superior separation performance. By manipulating PEI molecular weights, we optimized the membranes' physicochemical properties, leading to superior separation efficiency. As a result, exceptional rejections of Co2+, Sr2+, and Cs+ ions were achieved, with rejection rates reaching 95.5 %, 93.7 %, and 92.54 %, respectively. Furthermore, long-term stability experiments validated the membrane's potential for purifying nuclear wastewater. These findings hold promise for the application of biomaterial-based membranes in the treatment of radioactive nuclear wastewater.

Abstract:Significant amounts of radioactive wastewater including uranium are discharged into the environment as a result of the expansion of large-scale nuclear power. Due to uranium's toxicity and bioaccumulation, it is crucial to develop efficient and long-lasting adsorbents with functional groups for improving the selective removal of U(VI). By successfully introducing amidoxime and phosphate groups into quaternary ammonium chitosan (QCS-AO/P, i.e., QAP), an antimicrobial composite nanofiber adsorbent (PQAP) composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and the as-prepared QAP was synthesized via the solution blow spinning technology (SBS) technique for the highly efficient recovery of uranium from wastewater. The influence of initial pH, contact time, and sorbent composition on the uranyl ion absorption and the antibacterial assay was studied. The PQAP composite fiber mat had the highest adsorption capacity of uranyl ions at pH 8 (559.26 mg/g), and showed excellent antibacterial activities. After six adsorption–desorption cycles, PQAP still retained a high uranium adsorption capacity of 420 mg/g and elimination efficiency (84%). The novel integrated sorption and antibacterial strategy provides new insights for highly efficient treatment of radioactive wastewater.

Abstract:The global environment has been compromised in various ways, leading to problems such as heavy metal ions and radionuclide contamination. Novel nanomaterials are promising for the treatment of polluted water owing to their special physicochemical properties. This chapter focuses on novel nanomaterials and remediation technologies for the treatment of heavy and radioactive ions. First, the chemical behavior of different metal ions and radionuclides (e.g., Cr, As, Pb, Hg, U, Tc, and Sr) in solution are discussed. Then, advantages and disadvantages of various remediation technologies including adsorption, membrane filtration, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, electrochemical treatment, and bioremediation are discussed. Subsequently, the properties, preparation methods, and applications of novel nanomaterials such as metal-organic framework, covalent organic framework, MXene, nanoscale zero-valent iron, and carbon-based nanomaterials are systematic discussed. Finally, expectations are briefly discussed and the work is summarized.
Self-cleaning and regenerable nano zero-valent iron modified PCN-224 heterojunction for photo-enhanced radioactive waste reduction

Abstract:The expansion of large-scale nuclear power causes a substantial volume of radioactive wastewater containing uranium to be released into the environment. Because of uranium's toxicity and bioaccumulation, it is critical to develop the efficient and sustainable materials for selective removal of uranium (VI). Herein, a regenerable anti-biofouling nano zero-valent iron doped porphyrinic zirconium metal–organic framework (NZVI@PCN-224) heterojunction system was successfully fabricated. Due to the Schottky-junction effect at the NZVI/MOF interface, the NZVI nanomaterial immobilized on PCN-224 could improve interfacial electron transfer and separation efficiency, and enhance entire reduction of highly soluble U(VI) to less soluble U(IV), involving photocatalytic reduction and chemical reduction. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic effect also prompts the NZVI@PCN-224 to produce more biotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in high anti-microbial and anti-algae activities. Under dark conditions, NZVI@PCN-224 with a large specific surface area could provide sufficient oxo atoms as the uranium binding sites and show the highest uranium-adsorbing capability of 57.94 mg/g at pH 4.0. After eight adsorption-desorption cycles, NZVI@PCN-224 still retained a high uranium adsorption capacity of 47.98 mg/g and elimination efficiency (91.72%). This sorption/reduction/anti-biofouling synergistic strategy of combining chelation, chemical reduction and photocatalytic performance inspires new insights for highly efficient treatment of liquid radioactive waste.

Abstract:Nanomaterials with smaller size and larger surface area act as an excellent adsorbent for effective removal of various organic and inorganic pollutants from water and wastewater. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were found to be the promising nanomaterials for purification of water. Nano-metals and nano-metal oxides have also been utilized to render pollutants/contaminants harmless in wastewater. Nanomaterials like nano zero-valent silver are bioactive, they can destroy bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms and are an alternative to chlorine bleaches. Nanomaterials can also be used to detect the presence of virus in wastewater and can effectively remove them which cannot be removed by current techniques. Second generation nanomembranes are being designed to detect and remove various pollutants from water. However, precautions must be taken while using nanoparticles to avoid any threat to human health and environment. There is a high need to modify and synthesize nanoparticles with high efficiency, eco-friendly nature and less cost of production. In future, nanomaterials will become essential component for wastewater treatment because more and more progress is being made in the field of nanotechnology to upgrade nanomaterials in terms of economically efficient and ecofriendly technology.

Abstract:Magnetically separable adsorbents with high sorption capacity for nuclear wastewater treatment have been successfully synthesized on the basis of fungus-Fe3O4 nanoparticle bio-nanocomposites through a simple co-culture method. Experiments demonstrated that fungus-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles can be beneficial for avoiding the phenomenon of aggregation for Fe3O4 nanoparticles and effectively separating the adsorbents from the contaminated water after adsorption without sacrificing the performances of magnetic adsorbent Fe3O4. Indeed, the bio-nanocomposites with improved sorption capacity can be attributed to the quasi-monodisperse Fe3O4 nanomaterials uniformly grown on the macro-scale fungus body. Furthermore, the promising adsorbents with high biological activity can effectively and synergistically remove the radioactive ions from nuclear wastewater with the saturated sorption capacity up to 171 mg g(-1) for (UO2)(2+) ions. The fast adsorption process can guarantee that the polluted water could be recovered within only four hours. Our results clearly indicate that the bio-nanocomposites could be used as cost-effective radioactive adsorbents.
An Overview of Nanomaterials Applied for Removing Dyes from Wastewater

Abstract:Organic dyes are one of the most commonly discharged pollutants in wastewaters; however, many conventional treatment methods cannot treat them effectively. Over the past few decades, we have witnessed rapid development of nanotechnologies, which offered new opportunities for developing innovative methods to treat dye-contaminated wastewater with low price and high efficiency. The large surface area, modified surface properties, unique electron conduction properties, etc. offer nanomaterials with excellent performances in dye-contaminated wastewater treatment. For examples, the agar-modified monometallic/bimetallic nanoparticles have the maximum methylene blue adsorption capacity of 875.0 mg/g, which are several times higher than conventional adsorbents. Among various nanomaterials, the carbonaceous nanomaterials, nano-sized TiO2, and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) are considered as the most promising nanomaterials for removing dyes from water phase. However, some challenges, such as high cost and poor separation performance, still limit their engineering application. This article reviewed the recent advances in the nanomaterials used for dye removal via adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and biological treatment. The modification methods for improving the effectiveness of nanomaterials are highlighted. Finally, the current knowledge gaps of developing nanomaterials on the environmental application were discussed, and the possible further research direction is proposed.

Abstract:Heavy metals are toxic and non-biodegradable environmental contaminants that seriously threaten human health. The remediation of heavy metal-contaminated water and soil is an urgent issue from both environmental and biological points of view. Recently, nanomaterials with excellent adsorption capacities, great chemical reactivity, active atomicity, and environmentally friendly performance have attracted widespread interest as potential adsorbents for heavy metal removal. This review first introduces the application of nanomaterials for removing heavy metal ions from the environment. Then, the environmental factors affecting the adsorption of nanomaterials, their toxicity, and environmental risks are discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of applying nanomaterials in environmental remediation are discussed, which can provide perspectives for future in-depth studies and applications.

Abstract:The rapid growth in nuclear industries such as uranium ores mining, nuclear energy generation, spent-fuel treatment and nuclear weapon manufacture has caused a legacy of uranium contamination in the aquatic environment, which poses a potential threat to the ecological environment and human health. The safe and effective disposal of uranium-contaminated water has thus been an urgent requirement. For decades, various materials have been shown to be capable for removing uranium from aqueous solution by adsorption technique, namely inorganic materials (e.g., clay minerals, metal oxides, mesoporous silica), organic polymers (e.g., resins, cellulose, chitosan), carbon family materials (e.g., mesoporous carbon, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxides), and porous framework materials (e.g., covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks). In this review, we provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of the researches conducted from 2005 to 2018 for uranium removal from aqueous solution by these emerging materials. The different approaches in the determination of the adsorption mechanisms between uranium and adsorbents are also briefly summarized, involving macroscopic experimental approaches, microscopic spectroscopic and computational approaches. Finally, we discuss the current limitations and propose future research perspectives in hopes of inspiring more dramatic advancements in the material and environment remediation fields.

Abstract:Environmental nanotechnology has developed rapidly over the past few decades due to the fast advancement of nanotechnology and nanomaterials (NMs). Due to their nanoscale size, NMs are receiving immense attention in research and development worldwide. Their nano size has led to better catalysis, high reactivity, and high adsorption capacity. In wastewater treatment, nanotechnology has significant potential to improve the performance and efficiency of water decontamination; more effectively, it provides a sustainable way to keep water supplies safe. Numerous studies have found that removing harmful components from wastewater by employing nanoparticles in conjunction with various treatment methods is effective. The purpose of the current investigation is to conduct a review of the envisioned applications of various NMs in the treatment of wastewater. These NMs include carbonaceous NMs, metal-containing nanoparticles, and nanocomposites, all of which will be reviewed and highlighted in depth.

Abstract:Effective removal of uranium from wastewater is of vital significance for the human health and environmental protection. In this paper, by adopting the use of co-mingling and covalent cross-linking methods, nano-ZnO enhanced the amidoxime-functional sodium alginate composite hydrogel (SA/CMC-ZnO NPS -AO 1 ) was prepared. The mechanical stability of SA/CMC-ZnO NPS -AO 1 was improved with the assistance of ZnO. The introduction of amidoxime group effectively improved the selectivity of uranyl ions (K d U = 10016 mL/g). The fitted maximum adsorption capacity of SA/CMC-ZnO NPS -AO 1 for U(VI) was 641.7 mg/g at 298 K and pH = 4. This is higher than most of sodium alginate-based adsorbents which were currently used for uranium removal from wastewater. Furthermore, in the dynamic adsorption column experiment at the scale of the laboratory, the adsorption equilibrium (163 mg/g) was acquired after 3 days in a low-concentration uranium solution (50 mg/L). Finally, the possible adsorption mechanism was discussed. This study not only provides a new method for the preparation of adsorption agents, but also provides theoretical support for the actual application of adsorbents in the uranium-containing wastewater.

Abstract:The paper reviews the adsorption methods used for decontaminating liquid radioactive waste (LRW) and radioactive-contaminated natural water of different origins from radionuclides. The primary attention is paid to the sorption of long-lived cesium and strontium radionuclides, which, besides the high radiotoxicity, in most cases define the overall activity of radioactive waste. A standard technique was developed for evaluating the efficiency of various sorption materials in relation to cesium and strontium radionuclides by determining the distribution coefficient (K d ) values of tracer 137 Cs and 90 Sr radionuclides in solutions of sodium and calcium salts, the essential bulk components of LRW, and natural water. The results showed that natural aluminosilicate sorbents, zeolites, zirconium phosphate, and ferrocyanide sorbents could effectively remove 137 Cs from low-salt solutions. The sorbent based on manganese (III, IV) oxyhydrate exhibited the highest selectivity to strontium. A correlation between the crystalline and porous structure of the sorbents and the selectivity to cesium and strontium radionuclides was shown. The results obtained provide an adequate choice of the most effective sorbents for the decontamination of radioactively contaminated natural water and technogenic liquid waste from cesium and strontium radionuclides.

Abstract:With the rapid development of nuclear industry, effective management of nuclear waste and oversight of nuclear fuel cycle are critical. Radionuclides such as uranium (U), plutonium (Pu), neptunium (Np), americium (Am), curium (Cm), technetium (Tc), rhenium (Re), iodine (I), selenium (Se), thorium (Th), cesium (Cs), and strontium (Sr) transferred into environment are dangerous. It is crucial to design the corresponding materials to exhibit high adsorption capacity and selectivity among competing species in nuclear waste. Herein, this review comprehensively summarizes the application of advanced porous materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and amorphous porous organic polymers (POPs) as porous adsorbents for radionuclides removal. These porous materials feature uniform composition, large porosity, and good stability, which lay a good foundation for various applications. The tunable pore sizes, high specific surface areas, exchangeable sites, and functional groups are designed as accessible platforms for nuclides diffusion and adsorption. Specific binding mechanisms toward various radionuclides, such as complexation, electrostatic interaction, and ion exchange are presented. Beyond traditional adsorbents, the superior capacity, kinetics, selectivity, and reusability of COFs, MOFs, and POPs make them broad application prospects in radionuclides removal, providing a way for effective applications in environmental remediation.
