Abstract:Because of their high energy density and long cycle life, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have dominated the portable electronics market for over 20 years. However, with the increasing demand for large-scale energy storage systems for grid applications, the price of Li resources has increased owing to the low abundance of Li in Earth's crust and non-uniform distribution on the planet. Because Na has similar physical and chemical properties as Li and is an abundant natural resource, room-temperature sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are expected to be among the most promising next-generation large grid energy storage devices. It is known that the cathode, anode, separator and electrolyte materials are the main components of batteries. Among these, Na-containing cathode materials are of critical importance. As a cathode material for SIBs, polyanion-type compounds have become a hot research topic owing to their versatile structural frameworks, high thermal stabilities, high ambient stabilities even in the charging state, small volume changes, tunable operating voltage by tuning the chemical environment of the polyanions, and high operating voltages owing to the inductive effects of the polyanionic groups (PO43-,SO42-, SiO44- etc.). In particular, for Earth's abundant resources and inherent stability, polyanion-based compounds are suitable for large-scale stationary energy storage. Taking grid balancing into account, batteries with fast charge rates are in demand, which requires cathodes having high rate capability. However, despite the presence of ion diffusion channels in polyanion compounds, the electronic transport channels are blocked owing to the separation of the metal polyhedral and the strong electronegativity of the anions, leading to poor electron conductivity, which largely limits the rate capability of polyanion compounds. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the inherent limitation of the kinetics in terms of the structural aspects and to determine strategies for improving the rate capability. This review discusses the intrinsic reasons for the factors impacting ion diffusion based on the different structures of polyanion-type cathodes. From the perspectives of surface modification and morphology, strategies for enhancing the transport of sodium ions and electrons at the surface and interface are summarized and discussed. Then, from the standpoint of the hierarchical structures of materials to the design of a structural framework, which have been rarely reported, this review proposes schemes that intrinsically enhance the rate capability of polyanion compounds and provides a perspective on developments that can further improve the rate capability of cathode materials. This review provides suggestions for designing and optimizing high-rate polyanion-type and other kinds of cathodes from both academic and practical viewpoints.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, are now widely used as power sources for portable electronics and electric vehicles, but material innovations are still needed to satisfy the increasing demand for larger energy density. Recently, lithium- and sodium-rich electrode materials, including the A2MO3-family layered compounds (A = Li, Na; M = Mn4+, Ru4+, etc), have been extensively studied as potential high-capacity electrode materials for a cumulative cationic and anionic redox activity. Negatively charged oxide ions can potentially donate electrons to compensate for the absence of oxidable transition metals as a redox center to further increase the reversible capacity. Understanding and controlling the state-of-the-art anionic redox processes is pivotal for the design of advanced energy materials, highlighted in rechargeable batteries. Hence, experimental and theoretical approaches have been developed to consecutively study the diverting processes, states, and structures involved. In this review, we attempt to present a literature overview and provide insight into the reaction mechanism with respect to the anionic redox processes, proposing some opinions as target oriented. It is hoped that, through this discussion, the search for anionic redox electrode materials with high-capacity rechargeable batteries can be advanced, and practical applications realized as soon as possible.
Reversible Redox Chemistry of Azo Compounds for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sustainable sodium-ion batteries (SSIBs) using renewable organic electrodes are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for the large-scale renewable energy storage. However, the lack of high-performance anode material impedes the development of SSIBs. Herein, we report a new type of organic anode material based on azo group for SSIBs. Azobenzene-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid sodium salt is used as a model to investigate the electrochemical behaviors and reaction mechanism of azo compound. It exhibits a reversible capacity of 170 mAh g-1 at 0.2C. When current density is increased to 20C, the reversible capacities of 98 mAh g-1 can be retained for 2000 cycles, demonstrating excellent cycling stability and high rate capability. The detailed characterizations reveal that azo group acts as an electrochemical active site to reversibly bond with Na+ . The reversible redox chemistry between azo compound and Na ions offer opportunities for developing long-cycle-life and high-rate SSIBs.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries have proven themselves to be indispensable among modern day society. Demands stemming from consumer electronics and renewable energy systems have pushed researchers to strive for new electrochemical technologies. To this end, the advent of anionic redox, that is, the sequential or simultaneous redox of the cation and anion in a transition metal oxide based cathode for a Li-ion battery, has garnered much attention due to the enhanced specific capacities. Unfortunately, the higher energy densities are plagued with problems associated with the irreversibility of anionic redox. Much effort has been placed on finding a suitable composition of transition metal oxide, with some groups identifying the underlying features and relationship for anion redox and cationic redox to occur reversibly. Accordingly, it is timely to review anionic redox in terms of what anionic redox is with emphasis on the mechanism and the evidence underlying its discovery and validation. To follow will be a section defining the nature of the transition metal and oxygen bond accompanied by three subsequent sections bridging the redox spectrum from pure anionic, to a mix of cationic and anionic and pure cationic.

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have been extensively investigated as a promising alternative for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) owing to the readily available character of sodium, lower costs of battery systems, as well as a similar working mechanism to LIBs. However, this view turns out to be oversimplified; countless reviews especially in the last years contradict each other, and it is still a challenging task to design highly performing electrode materials for SIBs. Due to the larger radius of Na+, its lower covalent character, and the resulting changes in intercalation chemistry, sodium is far from being only the bigger relative of lithium, and the difference leads to altered loading curves, and the occurrence of a multiplicity of binding sites. An in‐depth holistic understanding of the sodium storage mechanisms is needed to resolve the controversial discussions in the research community, ideally starting with unquestionable thermodynamic points. Here, taking a tutorial perspective, first the recent discussions on the storage mechanism of sodium in carbons are reviewed from an unorthodox viewpoint, namely addressing sodium uptake as a multifaceted adsorption process with an added electrochemical binding potential. This model is based on literature data. Afterward, challenges and perspectives revealed by such a model are discussed. The authors provide an in‐depth holistic understanding of the sodium storage mechanism in carbon anodes by building a revised model from a thermodynamic view. Based on the discussions of recent storage mechanisms of sodium in carbon anodes from an unorthodox viewpoint, sodium uptake is addressed as a multifaceted adsorption process with an added electrochemical binding potential.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been powering portable electronic devices and electric vehicles for over three decades. However, growing concerns regarding the limited availability of lithium resources and the subsequent surge in costs have prompted the exploration of alternative energy storage systems beyond LIBs. Among these alternatives, sodium-based batteries, with their similar intercalation chemistry, have emerged as the most promising alternative due to their cost-effectiveness and the abundance of sodium reserves in nature. Developing sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) that possess high energy density, long lifespan, and high-rate capability necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the reaction mechanisms, especially the intricate chemistry involved in cathode materials. In this review, we delve into the reaction mechanisms of the most commonly used cathode materials for SIBs, which include layered transition-metal oxides, polyanionic compounds, Prussian blue analogues, etc. We also highlight the specific physicochemical properties that have been uncovered through the application of advanced operando characterization techniques. Building upon the insights gained from this comprehensive review, we put forth future perspectives on the development of novel cathode materials for SIBs. By leveraging the extensive knowledge generated, we aspire to pave the way for further advancements in sodium-ion battery technology.

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are promising in several aspects due to their many advantages over lithium‐ion batteries. Among SIB’s several outstanding attributes, its low cost, resource abundance, and potential safety make it suitable for large‐scale energy storage systems (ESS). Among the potential cathode materials, poly‐anionic cathode materials could be a better choice for their stability and safety in comparison to layered transition metal oxides and Prussian blue analogues (PBA). However, on the other hand, the conductivity as well as the available capacity of the polyanion compounds are still poor, which limits their applications; moreover, some polyanion cathode operate at low voltage, which reduces the energy density and raises the cost of the battery system. We here try to summarize the recent progress of polyanion compounds as cathode materials for SIB. These compounds are categorized based on the metal redox couple, including V‐, Cr‐, Mn‐, Fe‐, Co‐, and Ni‐polyanion compounds. Our attention is specifically drawn to properties such as reversible redox voltage, capacity, cycling stability, and sodium storage mechanisms. We also discuss the challenges and potential development strategies for the future.

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have enjoyed speedy development in the past decades driven by sustainability and cost advantage. Electrolytes are in large part responsible for battery performances in terms of lifetime and durability. In this review, the fundamentals, recent developments, and limitations of electrolytes for SIBs are summarized and discussed in detail. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), driven by sustainability and cost advantage, have been recognized as one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage devices. Electrolytes, as the most unique component that not only ionically connect while insulating electronically electrodes but also determine the eventual improvements in performance mainly regarding cycle life, Coulombic efficiency, energy density, and safety, hold the key to the practical implementation of SIBs. In this review, the fundamental design principles of Na+‐ion electrolytes and the chemical properties of the Na+ cation over the Li+ cation in terms of ion transport, salt dissolution, and solvation structure are first discussed. Then, a sequence of crucial experimental discoveries and strategical achievements in the field of electrolytes for SIBs are presented, with focuses on the ether‐based electrolytes for co‐intercalation into graphite, diluted and highly concentrated electrolytes, wide temperature range electrolytes, nonflammable electrolytes, indispensable electrolyte components (functional additives and new sodium salts). Finally, a detailed analysis of research trends of practically feasible Na+‐ion electrolytes is presented to aid in the ongoing quest for better SIBs of the future.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) featuring the merits of low cost and abundant resources have attracted extensive interest and are considered one of the best alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the large radius of Na + limits the conductivity and energy density of SIBs, and the search for electrode materials with excellent sodium storage properties is imminent. Among various anodes, SnS-based anodes have been considered an excellent candidate for SIBs due to their unique layered structure and superior theoretical capacity. However, the slow ion migration of SnS and the huge volume expansion during the sodiation/desodiation process can lead to material crushing, which results in an impractical capacity. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the recent research progress of SnS and SnS-based composites in SIBs in terms of structural properties, synthesis methods, electrochemical reaction mechanisms, and modification strategies. Among all the modification strategies, carbon coating and heterostructure design of SnS are the effective approaches to these challenges. Finally, this review provides an outlook on the future research and development of SnS-based anodes for high-performance SIB applications, which provides ideas for future research on SnS-based anode materials and promotes their rapid development and practical applications.

Abstract:This review summarizes a basic understanding of anionic redox related to the current positive electrode materials for Li/Na‐ion batteries. A comprehensive summary of different categories of materials is proposed with corresponding characterization, challenges, and strategies. It can provide guidance for developing high energy density positive electrode materials for Li/Na‐ion batteries involving anionic redox. Compared with conventional positive electrode materials in Li‐ion batteries, Li‐rich materials have a huge advantage of large specific capacities of >300 mAh g−1. Anionic redox mechanism is proposed to explain the over‐capacity, which means anions can participate in the redox process for charge compensation. The concept enriches the range and design considerations of high‐energy‐density positive electrode materials for both Li‐ion and Na‐ion batteries, which therefore arouses extensive attention. This review summarizes the progress of anionic redox in rechargeable batteries in recent years and discusses the fundamental mechanism that triggers anionic redox. Moreover, the state‐of‐the‐art materials involving anionic redox are illustrated, accompanied by the challenges for practical applications. Furthermore, the common techniques for monitoring anionic redox are reviewed and compared for an advisable choice in future studies. Finally, the consideration and discussion for designing stable positive electrodes based on cationic and anionic redox are presented. The perspective is highlighted and this review provides a basic understanding of anionic redox in rechargeable batteries and paves the way to develop high‐capacity positive electrodes for high‐energy battery systems.

Abstract:One of key issue in SIBs is the development and characterization of anodes. In this review, it is aimed to provide an overview of how the ssNMR approaches can help us better understand the underlying mechanisms, dynamics, and structures of sodium anodes by its unique and innovative role. The advancements of ssNMR used in sodium anode research are also highlighted. Battery performance is highly related to the intrinsic properties of battery materials. To develop commercial anode electrode materials for advanced sodium‐based batteries, it is crucial to understand whose fundamental issues including compositions and structure of the bulk and interface, dynamics and electrochemical reactions during cycling. The key for present and ongoing success of carbon‐based and sodium metal anode is to overcome an intrinsic challenge associated with transport and storage of ions and complicated interface activities, especially for the sodiation process with associated risk of dendrite. Advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique has unique advantages in characterizing the local or microstructure of anode electrode materials and their interfacial evolutions down to the atomic level by a noninvasive and nondestructive manner. In this review, an overview is provided of the recent advances in understanding the fundamental issues of carbon based and sodium metal anode materials using advanced NMR approaches. Here, latest advancements of NMR are presented for applications in characterizing structures and dynamics of anode electrode material as well as their interfacial evolutions. Finally, the prospect and limitation of NMR techniques in batteries research will be highlighted, thereby paving the way for accelerating the development of next generation sodium batteries.

Status of Li(Na)-based anionic redox materials for better batteries

Abstract:For decades, Li-ion batteries are serving as a transformative technology in propelling off-network energy use as exemplified by the prosperity of portable electronics and electric vehicles. However, they are suffering from the shortage of energy density for modern-society energy storage, as the conventional way of Li-ion batteries work solely relies on redox reaction of transition metal (cationic redox) upon Li removal/uptake. This situation has been changed since the emergence of anionic redox, i.e., anions is redox center, that offers extra capacity in Li-rich electrode materials. In this chapter, we aim to briefly introduce how anionic redox chemistry concept rises and revolutionizes the cathode materials design in Li(Na)-ion batteries. We revisit the fundamental science behind anionic redox, and indicate how these knowledge opened new dimensionalities of electrode material design. We also summarize the progresses in understanding and solving the practical roadblocks for anionic redox, and highlight the remaining issues deserving to be explored in the future.

Abstract:Considering the natural abundance and low cost of sodium resources, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have received much attention for large-scale electro-chemical energy storage. However, smart structure design strategies and good mechanistic understanding are required to enable advanced SIBs with high energy density. In recent years, the exploration of advanced cathode, anode, and electrolyte materials, as well as advanced diagnostics have been extensively carried out. This review mainly focuses on the challenging problems for the attractive battery materials (i.e., cathode, anode, and electrolytes) and summarizes the latest strategies to improve their electrochemical performance as well as presenting recent progress in operando diagnostics to disclose the physics behind the electrochemical performance and to provide guidance and approaches to design and synthesize advanced battery materials. Outlook and perspectives on the future research to build better SIBs are also provided.

Abstract:Along with great attention to eco-friendly power solutions, sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have stepped into the limelight for electrical vehicles (EVs) and grid-scale energy storage systems (ESSs). SIBs have been perceived as a bright substitute for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to abundance on Earth along with the cost-effectiveness of Na resources compared to Li counterparts. Nevertheless, there are still inherent challenges to commercialize SIBs due to the relatively larger ionic radius and sluggish kinetics of Na+ ions than those of Li+ ions. Particularly, exploring novel anode materials is necessary because the conventional graphite anode in LIBs is less active in Na cells and hard carbon anodes exhibit a poor rate capability. Various metal compounds have been examined for high-performance anode materials in SIBs and they exhibit different electrochemical performances depending on their compositions. In this review, we summarize and discuss the correlation between cation and anion compositions of metal compound anodes and their structural features, energy storage mechanisms, working potentials, and electrochemical performances. On top of that, we also present current research progress and numerous strategies for achieving high energy density, power, and excellent cycle stability in anode materials.

Abstract:Room-temperature nonaqueous rechargeable sodium ion batteries (SIBs) were first studied in 1980s, which had undergone rapid revival since 2010 and could be considered as the most promising candidate for alternative to lithium ion batteries (LIBs) because of their similar chemistry and the abundant sodium reserves. Extensive efforts have been devoted in the last decade to the development of advanced SIBs including cathodes, anodes, electrolytes, as well as electrode/electrolyte interphases. Nowadays the development of SIBs comes at a critical period. Considerable encouraging works have been reported, however, several challenges still hinder their practical applications. In this review, we summarize and discuss the current progress on electrode materials and electrolytes for SIBs. To push forward their practical applications, several promising materials as well as the electrolytes are highlighted. At the end of this review, the crucial challenges and perspectives for advanced nonaqueous SIBs are also proposed.

The previous studies on voltage hysteresis, capacity decay and oxygen release induced by oxygen redox as well as the effectiveness of different strategies including superlattice engineering, elemental substitution, and surface modification on the electrochemical performances of cathode materials with oxygen redox are comprehensively summarized with typical examples. Finally, the remaining challenges and the future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:As one of the next generation battery system, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been attached great interest for its abundant resources, low cost and good safety. Recently, high energy density cathode materials with anionic redox chemistry in SIBs have become the mainstream. The working potential of oxygen redox in layered transition metal oxide cathodes is about 4.2 V (vs. Na + /Na), which can not only elevate the battery potential but also harvest extra capacity. Thus, reasonably utilizing the oxygen redox can drastically increase the energy density of the batteries. However, the undesired phase transition and structural distortion resulted from oxygen redox usually lead to severe voltage hysteresis and capacity decay of the cathodes. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the relationship between the transition metal components and cycling stability of the cathodes, which provides valuable understanding for discovering novel cathodes with more reversible and higher capacity. To improve the structure stability and promote more anionic redox, we have been focusing on tuning the structure of P2-layered cathode materials with the different transition metal ligands such as Al/Ti/Zn-Mn. We have performed in-situ XRD and ex-situ XAS characterizations to investigate the charge compensation mechanism of the cathodes. The O K-edge XAS results indicated O e g orbits variation at fully charged state and provided solid evidence of oxygen redox chemistry. Moreover, we combined EXAFS results and DFT calculations to construct the model of local structure distortion. These results provide further understanding of the oxygen redox chemistry mechanism and promote the development of high energy density SIBs. Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have drawn considerable interest as power-storage devices owing to the wide abundance of their constituents and low cost. To realize a high performance-price ratio, the cathode and anode materials must be optimized. As essential components of SIBs, electrolytes should have wide electrochemical windows, high thermal stability, and exceptional ionic conductivity. Therefore, improved electrolytes, based on various materials and compositions, are developed to meet the practical demands of SIBs, including organic electrolytes, ionic liquids, aqueous, solid electrolytes, and hybrid electrolytes. Although mature organic electrolytes are currently used in production, aqueous and solid electrolytes show advantages for future applications, as discussed here in detail. Current efforts in modifying electrolytes to optimize their interfacial compatibility with electrodes, leading to longer battery lifetimes and greater safety, are described. The advanced characterization techniques used to investigate the properties of electrolytes and interfaces are introduced, and the reaction processes and degradation mechanisms of SIBs are revealed. Furthermore, the practical prospects of SIBs promoted by high-quality electrolytes appropriately matched with electrodes are predicted and directions for developing next-generation SIBs are suggested.

Abstract:Recently, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted extensive attention as potential alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the abundance, even distribution, low cost, and environmentally friendly nature of sodium. However, sodium ions are larger than lithium ions so that the anode materials of LIBs are not suitable for SIBs. Therefore, many negative electrode materials have been investigated. Among them, Sb 2 S 3 -based nanomaterials have gradually become a research focus due to their high theoretical specific capacity, good thermal stability, simple preparation, and low price. In this review, the research progress of Sb 2 S 3 -based nanomaterials in the SIB field in recent years is summarized, including Sb 2 S 3 , Sb 2 S 3 /carbon composites, Sb 2 S 3 /graphene composites, and Sb 2 S 3 /M x S y composites. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects for the development of Sb 2 S 3 -based nanomaterials are also put forward. We hope this review will contribute to the design and manufacture of high-performance SIBs and promote its practical application.
