Abstract:The advent of novel organic and inorganic nanomaterials in recent years, particularly nanostructured carbons, conducting polymers, and metal oxides, has enabled the fabrication of various energy devices with enhanced performance. In this paper, we review in detail different nanomaterials used in the fabrication of electrochemical capacitor electrodes and also give a brief overview of electric double-layer capacitors, pseudocapacitors, and hybrid capacitors. From a materials point of view, the latest trends in electrochemical capacitor research are also discussed through extensive analysis of the literature and by highlighting notable research examples (published mostly since 2013). Finally, a perspective on next-generation capacitor technology is also given, including the challenges that lie ahead.

Abstract:The rapid advancement in electronic devices, electric vehicles, and grid storage stations have lead to a high demand for energy storage devices with enhanced power and energy densities as well as extended lifespans. Lithium ion hybrid capacitors are constructed with battery-type anodes and capacitor-type cathodes, which enables the direct integration of the high energy from lithium ion batteries and high power and long lifetime from supercapacitors, making lithium ion hybrid capacitor one of the most promising energy storage devices. In the past two decades, tremendous efforts have been put into the search for suitable battery-type anode materials with improved Faradaic reaction kinetics so that it can match with the fast non-Faradaic charging rate of the capacitive cathodes. This review aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive summary of the battery-type anode materials for high-performance lithium ion hybrid capacitors. To date, a large variety of battery-type anode materials have been explored with smart material design strategies, such as carbonaceous materials, metal oxides, alloys, sulfides, nitirdes, and Mxenes, etc., which will be discussed in detail. A perspective to the challenges and future developing trends of lithium ion hybrid capacitors is proposed to close.

Abstract:Cost-effective microsized NiCo2O4 electrode materials were synthesized via a facile and scalable galvanostatic deposition method followed by a simple thermal treatment. The obtained materials are typical secondary microsized particles composed of ultrafine cubic NiCo2O4 nanoparticles and have a high surface area and mesoporous structure. The microsized NiCo2O4 electrode shows an excellent cycling behavior with no capacitance decays and maintains a high performance (11.4 W h kg(-1) and 2404 W kg(-1) at 8 A g(-1)) even after 3000 cycles, indicating a promising candidate for practical applications in electrochemical capacitors. Abstract:A novel hybrid core-shell structure of ZnO nanowires (NWs)/Ni as a pseudocapacitor electrode was successfully fabricated by atomic layer deposition of a nickel shell, and its capacitive performance was systemically investigated. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated that the NiO was formed at the interface between ZnO and Ni where the Ni was oxidized by ZnO during the ALD of the Ni layer. Electrochemical measurement results revealed that the Ti/ZnO NWs/Ni (1500 cycles) electrode with a 30 nm thick Ni-NiO shell layer had the best supercapacitor properties including ultrahigh specific capacitance (∼2440 F g-1), good rate capability (80.5%) under high current charge-discharge conditions, and a relatively better cycling stability (86.7% of the initial value remained after 750 cycles at 10 A g-1). These attractive capacitive behaviors are mainly attributed to the unique core-shell structure and the combined effect of ZnO NW arrays as short charge transfer pathways for ion diffusion and electron transfer as well as conductive Ni serving as channel for the fast electron transport to Ti substrate. This high-performance Ti/ZnO NWs/Ni hybrid structure is expected to be one of a promising electrodes for high-performance supercapacitor applications.
Hydrothermal and Soft-Templating Synthesis of Mesoporous NiCo2O4 Nanomaterials for High-Performance Electrochemical Capacitors

Abstract:Mesoporous nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) nanoparticles were synthesized via a hydrothermal and soft-templating method through quasi-reverse-micelle mechanism. The physicochemical properties of the NiCo2O4 materials were characterized via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and nitrogen sorption isotherms measurements. The electrochemical performances of the NiCo2O4 electrode were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. The obtained NiCo2O4 materials exhibit typical mesoporous structures, with an average particle size of about 200 nm, a specific surface area of 88.63 m2 g−1, and a total pore volume of 0.337 cm3 g−1. The facile electrolytes penetration for the mesoporous structures favors high-performance of the NiCo2O4 electrode. The NiCo2O4 electrode shows a high specific capacitance (591 F g−1 at 1 A g−1), high-rate capability (248 F g−1 at 20 A g−1), and a good cycling behavior for tested 3,000 cycles, indicating a promising application for electrochemical capacitors.

Abstract:A simple solid-state method was developed for large-scale growth of spinel nickel cobaltite (NiCo 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles on the surface of N-doped reduced graphene oxide nanosheet (N-rGO) as the enhanced performance electrode for electrochemical capacitors. The synthesis involves the room-temperature solid state reaction of a bimetallic (Ni, Co) hydroxide precursor and subsequent thermal transformation to NiCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles on the N-rGO support. Morphological analyses reveal that, with loading rate 49 wt%, NiCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles with an average size of around 12 nm are formed and uniformly dispersed on the surface of N-rGO nanosheets (NiCo 2 O 4 /N-rGO). Electrochemical measurements of NiCo 2 O 4 /N-rGO composites display a high specific capacitance of 1135 F g − 1 (based on NiCo 2 O 4 ) at a current density of 1 A g − 1 , and excellent cycling performance (100% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles) even at a very high current density of 8 A g − 1 , which are significantly higher than that of NiCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles prepared without using N-rGO. This much enhanced electrochemical performance is enabled by both the well-dispersed NiCo 2 O 4 nanoparticles that offer large accessible surface area and the mesoporous structure of NiCo 2 O 4 /N-rGO composites that facilitate electrons/ions transport. The facile two-step synthesis process developed in this work is promising to prepare electrode materials for high-performance electrochemical capacitors.

Abstract:Electrochemical supercapacitors as an energy storage device have become trademark in current electronic, medical and industrial applications, as they are sources of impressive power output. Supercapacitors supply fast power output, suitable to cover the energy demand of future electronic devices. Electrode material design is a subject of intense research in the area of energy development and advancement, due to its essential role in the electrochemical process of charge storage and the cost of capacitors. The nano-dimensions allow for more electroactive sites, different pore size distributions, and a large specific surface area, making nanostructured electrode materials more promising. Electrode materials based on metal oxides, metal nitrides, and metal carbides are considered ideal for highly efficient electrochemical supercapacitors. Recently, much effort has been devoted to metal nitride-based electrodes and their diverse compositions as they possess higher electrical conductivity and better corrosion resistance, electrochemical stability, and chemical reactivity. Among these, titanium nitride (TiN), possesses high electrochemical stability, outstanding electrical conductivity, and a unique electronic structure. Nanocomposites based on titanium nitrides are known to deliver higher electrochemical performance than pristine nanostructured TiNs due to potential synergetic effects from both the materials. In this paper, recent advancements made in the field of nanostructural TiN electrode materials for SCs are reviewed along with their challenges and future opportunities. Additionally, some of the major techniques involved in the synthesis process are discussed, along with some basic concepts.

Abstract:The depletion of traditional energy resources as well as the desire to reduce high CO2 emissions associated with energy production means that energy storage is now becoming more important than ever. New functional electrode materials are urgently needed for next-generation energy storage systems, such as supercapacitors or batteries, to meet the ever increasing demand for higher energy and power densities. Advances in nanotechnology are essential to meet those future challenges. It is critical to develop ways of synthesizing new nanomaterials with enhanced properties or combinations of properties to meet future challenges. In this Minireview we discuss several important recent studies in developing nanostructured pseudocapacitor electrodes, and summarize three major parameters that are the most important in determining the performance of electrode materials. A technique to optimize these parameters simultaneously and to achieve both high energy and power densities is also introduced.

Abstract:A simple, low cost and transferable colloidal processing method and the subsequent heat treatment has been optimized to prepare binder-free electrodes for their application in supercapacitors. NiO/Ni core–shell hybrid nanostructures have been synthetized by heterogeneous precipitation of metallic Ni nanospheres onto NiO nanoplatelets as seed surfaces. The electrophoretic deposition (EPD) has been used to shape the electroactive material onto 3D substrates such as Ni foams. The method has allowed us to control the growth and the homogeneity of the NiO/Ni coatings. The presence of metallic Nickel in the microstructure and the optimization of the thermal treatment have brought several improvements in the electrochemical response due to the connectivity of the final microstructure. The highest specific capacitance value has been obtained using a thermal treatment of 325 °C during 1 h in Argon. At this temperature, necks formed among ceramic-metallic nanoparticles preserve the structural integrity of the microstructure avoiding the employment of binders to enhance their connectivity. Thus, a compromise between porosity and connectivity should be established to improve electrochemical performance.

Abstract:In the contemporary era of technological advancement, the escalating energy consumption paralleling enhanced living standards necessitates sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions. Supercapacitors (SCs), lauded for their high capacitance and minimal environmental impact, have emerged as a focal point in this pursuit. Central to SCs' efficacy are the electrode materials, with nickel-based compounds gaining prominence due to their high theoretical capacitance, affordability, ecological compatibility, ease of synthesis, and chemical stability. Despite these merits, challenges such as inadequate rate capability and cycling property impede their broader applications. This review summarizes the latest advancements in nickel-based composite materials for SC electrodes. It comprehensively discusses their characteristics, fabrication techniques, morphological attributes, and strategies for performance enhancement. The review also analytically explores the diverse electrochemical properties of SCs, offering insights into the underlying causes. Concluding with a discussion on prevailing challenges and potential resolutions, it anticipates future directions in nickel-based supercapacitor electrode material development.

Abstract:As a new type of energy storage device, supercapacitors have the advantages of high-power densities, high safety factors, and low maintenance costs, so they have attracted widespread attention among researchers. However, a major problem with supercapacitors is that their energy densities are not high enough, which limits their application. Therefore, it is crucial to expand the application scenarios of supercapacitors to increase their energy density as much as possible without diminishing their advantages. The classification and working principles of supercapacitors are introduced in this paper. The electrochemical properties of pure NiS materials, NiS composites with carbon materials, NiS composites with sulfide materials, and NiS composites with transition metal oxides for supercapacitors are summarized. This paper may assist in the design of new electrode materials for NiS-based supercapacitors.

Nickel vanadate nitrogen-doped carbon nanocomposites for high-performance supercapacitor electrode

Abstract:A nickel-vanadium-based bimetallic precursor was produced using the polymerization process by urea-formaldehyde copolymers. The precursor was then calcined at 800 °C in an argon ambiance to form a Ni 3 V 2 O 8 -NC magnetic nanocomposite. Powerful techniques were used to study the physical characteristics and chemical composition of the fabricated Ni 3 V 2 O 8 -NC electrode. PXRD, Raman, and FTIR analyses proved that the crystal structure of Ni 3 V 2 O 8 -NC included N-doped graphitic carbon. FESEM and TEM analyses imaging showed the distribution of the Ni 3 V 2 O 8 nanoparticles on the layered graphitic carbon structure. TEM images showed the prepared sample has a particle size of around 10–15 nm with an enhanced active site area of 146 m 2 /g, as demonstrated by BET analysis. Ni 3 V 2 O 8 -NC nanocomposite exhibits magnetic behaviors and a magnetization saturation value of 35.99 emu/g. The electrochemical (EC) studies of the synthesized Ni 3 V 2 O 8 -NC electrode proceeded in an EC workstation of three-electrode. In a 5 M potassium hydroxide as an electrolyte, the cyclic voltmeter exhibited an enhanced capacitance ( C S ) of 915 F/g at 50 mV/s. Galvanic charge-discharge (GCD) study also exhibited a superior capacitive improvement of 1045 F/g at a current density ( I t ) of 10 A/g. Moreover, the fabricated Ni 3 V 2 O 8 -NC nanocomposite displays a good power density ( P t ) of 356.67 W/kg, improved ion accessibility, and substantial charge storage. At the high energy density ( E t ) of 67.34 W h/kg, the obtained P t was 285.17 W/kg. The enhanced GCD rate, cycle stability, and E t of the Ni 3 V 2 O 8 -NC magnetic nanocomposite nominate the sample as an excellent supercapacitor electrode. This study paves the way for developing effective, efficient, affordable, and ecologically friendly electrode materials.

Abstract:Abstract The article reviews the recent progress of electrochemical techniques on synthesizing nano-/microstructures as supercapacitor electrodes. With a history of more than a century, electrochemical techniques have evolved from metal plating since their inception to versatile synthesis tools for electrochemically active materials of diverse morphologies, compositions, and functions. The review begins with tutorials on the operating mechanisms of five commonly used electrochemical techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic deposition, galvanostatic deposition, pulse deposition, and electrophoretic deposition, followed by thorough surveys of the nano-/microstructured materials synthesized electrochemically. Specifically, representative synthesis mechanisms and the state-of-the-art electrochemical performances of exfoliated graphene, conducting polymers, metal oxides, metal sulfides, and their composites are surveyed. The article concludes with summaries of the unique merits, potential challenges, and associated opportunities of electrochemical synthesis techniques for electrode materials in supercapacitors.

Facile and Large-Scale Chemical Synthesis of Highly Porous Secondary Submicron/micron-Sized NiCo2O4 Materials for High-Performance Aqueous Hybrid AC-NiCo2O4 Electrochemical Capacitors

Abstract:Highly porous nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) materials have been synthesized via a facile and scalable chemical synthesis route. The obtained NiCo2O4 material displays a typical secondary submicron/micron-sized (0.1-2 mu m) agglomerate morphology, exhibiting large surface area (190.1 m(2) g(-1)) and high porosity (1.136 cm(3) g(-1)). The fabricated NiCo2O4 electrode shows high specific capacitance (351 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1)) and high-rate capability (82.1% capacitance retention at 8 A g(-1)), which is superior to many reported NiCo2O4 materials. Further, the assembled AC-NiCo2O4 aqueous hybrid capacitor exhibits high power and energy densities (2805 W kg(-1), 6.8 Wh kg(-1) at 8 A g(-1)) and high cycling stability (15% loss after 5000 cycles at 1.5 A g(-1)). The high-performance of the NiCo2O4 materials is attributed to their large surface area and highly porous structure which contribute to rich surface electroactive sites and easy ions transport pathways for facile electrochemical reactions. Synchronous Defect and Interface Engineering of NiMoO4 Nanowire Arrays for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Developing high-performance electrode materials is in high demand for the development of supercapacitors. Herein, defect and interface engineering has been simultaneously realized in NiMoO4 nanowire arrays (NWAs) using a simple sucrose coating followed by an annealing process. The resultant hierarchical oxygen-deficient NiMoO4@C NWAs (denoted as “NiMoO4−x@C”) are grown directly on conductive ferronickel foam substrates. This composite affords direct electrical contact with the substrates and directional electron transport, as well as short ionic diffusion pathways. Furthermore, the coating of the amorphous carbon shell and the introduction of oxygen vacancies effectively enhance the electrical conductivity of NiMoO4. In addition, the coated carbon layer improves the structural stability of the NiMoO4 in the whole charging and discharging process, significantly enhancing the cycling stability of the electrode. Consequently, the NiMoO4−x@C electrode delivers a high areal capacitance of 2.24 F cm−2 (1720 F g−1) at a current density of 1 mA cm−2 and superior cycling stability of 84.5% retention after 6000 cycles at 20 mA cm−2. Furthermore, an asymmetric super-capacitor device (ASC) has been constructed with NiMoO4−x@C as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode. The as-assembled ASC device shows excellent electrochemical performance with a high energy density of 51.6 W h kg−1 at a power density of 203.95 W kg−1. Moreover, the NiMoO4//AC ASC device manifests remarkable cyclability with 84.5% of capacitance retention over 6000 cycles. The results demonstrate that the NiMoO4−x@C composite is a promising material for electrochemical energy storage. This work can give new insights on the design and development of novel functional electrode materials via defect and interface engineering through simple yet effective chemical routes.

Abstract:The Co3O4@NiO composite electrode materials were successfully synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method followed by annealing treatment. Due to their three-dimensional network structure, these composite materials exhibited a large specific surface area, enhancing their electrochemical performance. Consequently, the Co3O4@NiO electrode demonstrated a specific capacitance of 1306 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, an excellent specific capacitance retention rate of 95.5% after 3000 cycles even at 8 A g-1 and a coulombic efficiency approaching 100 %. These outstanding properties make the Co3O4@NiO composite materials as the promising electrode materials for high performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Abstract This paper focuses on the latest progress in the preparation of a series of nanostructured anode materials in our laboratory and their electrochemical properties for Li-ion batteries. These anode materials include core-shell structured Si nanocomposites, TiO2 nanocomposites, novel MoO2 anode material, and carbon nanotube (CNT)-coated SnO2 nanowires (NWs). The substantial advantages of these nanostructured anodes provide greatly improved electrochemical performance including high capacity, better cycling behavior, and rate capability.
