Abstract:Droplet reactors have received considerable attention in recent years as an alternative route to the synthesis and potentially high-volume production of colloidal metal nanocrystals. Interfacial adsorption will immediately become an important issue to address when one seeks to translate a nanocrystal synthesis from batch reactors to droplet reactors due to the involvement of higher surface-to-volume ratios for the droplets and the fact that nanocrystals tend to be concentrated at the water-oil interface. Here we report a systematic study to compare the pros and cons of interfacial adsorption of metal nanocrystals during their synthesis in droplet reactors. On the one hand, interfacial adsorption can be used to generate nanocrystals with asymmetric shapes or structures, including one-sixth-truncated Ag octahedra and Au-Ag nanocups. On the other hand, interfacial adsorption has to be mitigated to obtain nanocrystals with uniform sizes and controlled shapes. We confirmed that Triton X-100, a nonionic surfactant, could effectively alleviate interfacial adsorption while imposing no impact on the capping agent typically needed for a shape-controlled synthesis. With the introduction of a proper surfactant, droplet reactors offer an attractive platform for the continuous production of colloidal metal nanocrystals.

Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals are essential to applications in a variety of areas, including catalysis, electronics, and photonics. Despite the large number of reports, there still exists a gap between academic studies and industrial applications due to the lack of ability to produce the nanocrystals in large quantities while still maintaining the good uniformity and precise controls. Because the nucleation and growth of colloidal nanocrystals are highly sensitive to experimental conditions, it is impractical to scale up their production by simply increasing the reaction volume. Here we report a new and practical approach based on milliliter-sized droplet reactors to the scalable production of nanocrystals. The droplets of 0.25 mL in volume were produced as a continuous flow in a fluidic device assembled from commercially available components. As a proof of concept, we have synthesized Pd, Au, and Pd-M (M = Au, Pt, and Ag) nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes, compositions, and structures on a scale of 1-10 g per hour (e.g., 3.6 g per hour for Pd cubes of 10 nm in edge length).

Abstract:Silver nanocrystals with uniform sizes were synthesized in droplet microreactors through seed-mediated growth. The key to the success of this synthesis is the use of air as a carrier phase to generate the droplets. The air not only separates the reaction solution into droplets but also provides O-2 for the generation of reducing agent (glycolaldehyde). It also serves as a buffer space for the diffusion of NO, which is formed in situ due to the oxidative etching of Ag nanocrystals with twin defects. For the first time, we were able to generate Ag nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes in continuous production by using droplet microreactors. For Ag nanocubes, their edge lengths could be readily controlled in the range of 30-100 nm by varying the reaction time, the amount of seeds, and the concentration of AgNO3 in the droplets. Furthermore, we demonstrated the synthesis of Ag octahedra in the droplet microreactors. We believe that the air-driven droplet generation device can be extended to other noble metals for the production of nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes.

Abstract:The mass transfer in the shear controllable synthesis process of nano-sized particles using a swirling vortex flow reactor is investigated. This type of a reactor is able to generate a strong 'Rankine vortex-like' flow with a great shear gradient in the radial direction, trapping the synthesised aggregated nano-particles into the vortex core to form aggregation. The aggregated particles are further agglomerated to form larger particles with high uniformity under the action of turbulent shear and subsequent mass transfer due to engulfment occurred in the turbulent eddies. The mass transfer is enhanced by engulfment between the slabs of the liquid streams tangentially entering into the reactor while the local shear in the turbulent eddies with the length scales down to the Kolmogorov scale shape the particles, yielding well spherical morphology and narrower size distribution. In addition, the mass transfer performance can be further improved by intensifying the local turbulent shear by applying the ultrasound to the synthesis process. The instantaneous collapse of cavitation bubbles in the vortex due to the introduction of ultrasound results in intensified micro-turbulent streaming. The particle characteristics, chemical reaction and mass transfer performance are found to be correlated with the local turbulence characteristics in the vortex. The mass transfer can be characterised using the film refresh model via the Sherwood number by considering the agglomerated particles response to the turbulent eddies. Both numerical simulation and experimental results clearly indicate the existence of the correlation in synthesis of aggregated nano-particles in swirling vortex reactor between the mass transfer and turbulence shear by using ultrasound irradiation.

Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals with well-controlled shapes or morphologies are of great interest for a variety of applications. To utilize these nanomaterials in consumer products, one has to produce the colloidal nanocrystals in large quantities while maintaining good control over their physical parameters and. properties. Droplet reactors have shown great potential for the continuous and scalable production of colloidal nanocrystals with controlled shapes. However, the efficiencies of most previously reported systems are still limited because of the complex post-treatment procedures. For example, the mixture of silicone oil and an aqueous suspension of solid products has to be separated by leveraging their miscibility and difference in density, while the solid products often need to be purified and concentrated by centrifugation. Herein, we report the design and construction of a droplet-reactor system that include new features such as a homemade unit for the automatic separation of silicone oil from the aqueous phase as well as a cross-flow filtration unit for the effective purification and concentration of the nanocrystals. Using various types of Pd nanocrystals as examples, we have demonstrated the feasibility of using this system to automatically produce and collect samples with uniform sizes and well-controlled shapes.
Synthesis of scalable microdroplets with fluid instability of shearing flow in microfluidics

Abstract:This paper reports a microfluidic reactor for synthesizing micro- and nano-droplets using fluid shearing instability of immiscible flow in microchannels. Three factors, flow rate between the two inputs, spout geometry and surface tension are numerically studied. Based on the simulation, a device with the optimal parameters was fabricated and tested. Both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation results and experimental results suggested that this technique is capable of conveniently controlling the droplets sizes from hundreds of micrometers down to several micrometers or even nanometers. This pilot research offers a proof-of-concept demonstration using instabilities in the microchannels to synthesize large quantity of microdroplets. Although the microdroplets in this study were formed by DI water containing Tween20 and silicon oil, the design with modification could be applied for synthesis of other types of micro- and nano-droplets.

Abstract:Nanodroplets have been paid great attention as they are crucial for a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological applications. In this paper, monodispersed nanodroplets are prepared and their directed motions are realized through conducting the formation of nonuniform structures via altering the ionic distribution within; all these dynamics have been observed by using in situ transmission electron microscopy liquid cell technology. It has been found that their transformation from random motion to directed motion is reversible. Moreover, combining multiple directed motions enables long‐distance travel with directed motion taking up 95% of the total time. The results here also prove that aqueous nanodroplets can slide directionally on the hydrophilic surface like droplets sliding on hydrophobic surface. Furthermore, the authors successfully achieve the unidirectional transportation of in situ prepared Ag nanoparticles by using the nanodroplets as nanoreactor, carrier, and transporter. The size and number of as‐prepared Ag nanoparticles can be quantitatively controlled. In summary, this research provides a new strategy for real‐time generation and precise manipulation of aqueous nanodroplets. Together with the quantitatively controllable in situ synthesis of Ag nanoparticles within the nanodroplets, this work can prove their promising applications in many fields.

Abstract:New strategies for materials fabrication are of fundamental importance in the advancement of science and technology 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 . Organometallic 13 , 14 and other organic solution phase 15 , 16 , 17 synthetic routes have enabled the synthesis of functional inorganic quantum dots or nanocrystals. These nanomaterials form the building blocks for new bottom-up approaches to materials assembly for a range of uses; such materials also receive attention because of their intrinsic size-dependent properties and resulting applications 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 . Here we report a unified approach to the synthesis of a large variety of nanocrystals with different chemistries and properties and with low dispersity; these include noble metal, magnetic/dielectric, semiconducting, rare-earth fluorescent, biomedical, organic optoelectronic semiconducting and conducting polymer nanoparticles. This strategy is based on a general phase transfer and separation mechanism occurring at the interfaces of the liquid, solid and solution phases present during the synthesis. We believe our methodology provides a simple and convenient route to a variety of building blocks for assembling materials with novel structure and function in nanotechnology 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 .
Continuous Production of Water‐Soluble Nanocrystals Through Anti‐Solvent Precipitation in a Fluidic Device

Abstract:This paper describes a simple and robust method for the continuous production of water-soluble nanocrystals using anti-solvent precipitation under diffusion control in a fluidic device. We use sodium chloride (NaCl) as an example to demonstrate the concept. In a typical process, aqueous NaCl and ethanol (the anti-solvent) serve as the focused and focusing phases, respectively, for the generation of a coaxial-flow system. Upon contact with each other, the rapid diffusion between water and ethanol leads to the formation of NaCl nanocrystals at the interface while a gradient in NaCl concentration is created along the flow direction. The nucleation and growth of NaCl nanocrystals can be readily tuned by varying the hydrodynamic parameters such as the ratio between the flow rates of the two phases and the total volumetric rate. By optimizing these parameters, we are able to produce NaCl nanocubes and nanospheres as small as 20 nm and 6 nm, respectively, while attaining a narrow distribution in size. We have also successfully generated KCl nanocrystals with similar controls, demonstrating the generality of this method for the production of water-soluble nanocrystals.

Abstract:The nucleation stage plays a decisive role in determining nanocrystal morphology and properties; hence, the ability to regulate nucleation is critical for achieving high-level control. Herein, glass microfluidic chips with S-shaped mixing units are designed for the synthesis of Au@Pt core/shell materials. The use of hydrodynamics to tune the nucleation kinetics is explored by varying the number of mixing units. Dendritic Au@Pt core/shell nanomaterials are controllably synthesized and a formation mechanism is proposed. As-synthesized Au@Pt exhibited excellent ethanol oxidation activity under alkaline conditions (8.4 times that of commercial Pt/C). This approach is also successfully applied to the synthesize of Au@Pd core/shell nanomaterials, thus demonstrating its generality.

Abstract:Morphological control with broad tunability is a primary goal for the synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals with unique physicochemical properties. Here we develop a robotic platform as a substitute for trial-and-error synthesis and labour-intensive characterization to achieve this goal. Gold nanocrystals (with strong visible-light absorption) and double-perovskite nanocrystals (with photoluminescence) are selected as typical proof-of-concept nanocrystals for this platform. An initial choice of key synthesis parameters was acquired through data mining of the literature. Automated synthesis and in situ characterization with further ex situ validation was then carried out and controllable synthesis of nanocrystals with the desired morphology was accomplished. To achieve morphology-oriented inverse design, correlations between the morphologies and structure-directing agents are identified by machine-learning models trained on a continuously expanded experimental database. Thus, the developed robotic platform with a data mining–synthesis–inverse design framework is promising in data-driven robotic synthesis of nanocrystals and beyond.

Abstract:Charged microdroplets are favored in microfluidic control, biomedicine, chemistry and materials processing due to their unique physicochemical environment, including interface double layers, high electric fields, surface concentration enrichment, and more. Herein, we investigated the crystallization of charged sodium chloride microdroplets and achieved the formation of hollow single crystals in a single-step process lasting only a few seconds, without the use of templates. Additionally, we discussed the plausible crystal growth mechanism, which appears to be an unconventional outward-inward growth process.

Abstract:The microstructure (composition, size and shape etc.) of semiconductor nanocrystals determine the electronic density of states of semiconductor nanomaterials and ultimately determine their optical and electrical properties. Semiconductor nanocrystal advanced structures, such as hybrid nanostructures and nanocrystal superlattices, not only integrate the function of individual nanocrystals, but also brings the materials collective and synchronic properties. How to control the monodispersity, composition and structure of as-prepared semiconductor nanocrystals during their syntheses, as well as their furthermore assembly, has been a hot research area in this decade. This critical review focuses on the development of synthetic and assembly methods (techniques) of semiconductor nanocrystals processed in the liquid phase. Emphasis is on the synthesis methodology, microstructure related properties of semiconductor nanocrystals, and their applications (243 references).

Abstract:Droplet‐based microreactors are of great interest to researchers due to their incredible ability in the synthesis of micro/nano‐materials with multi‐function and complex geometry. In recent years, a broad range of micro/nano‐materials has been synthesized in droplet‐based microreactors, which provide apparent advantages, such as better reproducibility, reliable automation, and accurate manipulation. In this review, we give a comprehensive and in‐depth insight into droplet‐based microreactors, covering fundamental research from droplet generation and manipulation to the applications of droplet‐based microreactors in micro/nano‐material generation. We also explore the outlook for droplet‐based microreactors and challenges that lie ahead and give a possible effort direction. Abstract:Electronic doped quantum dots (Ed-QDs), by heterovalent cations doping, have held promise for future device concepts in optoelectronic and spin-based technologies due to their broadband Stokes-shifted luminescence, enhanced electrical transport and tailored magnetic behavior. Considering their scale-up requirement and the low yielding of several current colloidal synthesis methods, a stable and efficient bulk synthesis strategy must be developed. Microreactors have long been recognized as an effective platform for producing nanomaterials and fabricating large-scale structures. Here, we chose microreactor platform for continuous synthesis of Ed-QDs in the air at low temperatures. By original reverse cation exchange reaction mechanism together with varying the kinetic conditions of microreactor platform, such as liquid flow rate, the Ag doped CdS (CdS: Ag) Ed-QDs with higher yield have been synthesized successfully due to the continuous synthesis advantages with a high degree of size selectivity. Enabled by microreactor engineering simulation, this research not only provides a new synthetic method towards scale-up production but also enables to improve chemical mass production of similar functional QDs for optical devices, bio-imaging and innovative information processing applications.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with sizes below 50 nm have high value in catalysis, especially in electrocatalysis. However, due to the low efficiency of mass and heat transfer, conventional batch synthesis is unable to produce high-quality Ag NPs repeatedly at a large scale. To tackle this obstacle, a droplet-based microreactor system was designed in this work. Continuous and controllable synthesis of Ag NPs with sizes ranging from 7 to 30 nm, polydispersity indexes less than 10%, and high stability which could be stored at room temperature for 2.5 months were achieved by regulating residence time and introducing seed-mediated growth. Based on the Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner model and experimental data, growth kinetics were analyzed and revealed it as a diffusion-limited reaction, providing more powerful theoretical support for the synthesis of metal nanomaterials by the microreactor system.

Abstract:Droplet microreactors are powerful tools for synthesizing chemicals, nano materials and biomolecules, but traditional methods, such as mechanical stirring, are hard to enhance the internal mass transfer of droplet microreactor due to its small reaction space. In this study, we propose a novel ultrasonic-enhancing method for droplet microreactor, and report the effect of bubbles inside micro-droplets for the first time. On this basis, the synthesis of AgInS2 nanocrystals is selected as model reaction to study the enhancement mechanism. It is discovered that the flow field in micro-droplet is significantly improved owing to acoustic streaming and cavitation microstreaming. Benefiting from them, the mass transfer coefficient is enhanced by 72.5 %, and AgInS2 nanocrystals are successfully synthesized with smaller, more uniform particle size, as well as more adjustable performance compared with no ultrasonic radiation condition. This work provides a new method and a deep insight of ultrasound enhancing droplet microreactor, enabling the continuous production of fine chemical synthesis.
