Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC), an eco-friendly bio-product obtained from fermentation of various microorganism, consisting of the interconnected networks structure attracted widespread interest due to its unique physical properties, including the large specific surface area, remarkable mechanical strength, high water-holding ability, good chemical stability, and environmental benign material. These advantages enable BC to be applied to fabricate the highly versatile three-dimensional (3D) carbon nanomaterials, and tunable flexible scaffold to support other multifunctional materials. In this review, the production process of various carbon nanofibrous composites based on BC, such as carbon nanofiber (CNF), doped CNF, CNF/metal oxide and CNF/conducting polymer, is presented. Their emerging applications in supercapacitors are illustrated, in particularly, the design of hybrid bendable electrodes based on BC substrate for flexible supercapacitor is highlighted. The challenges and opportunities in this fascinating area of designing functional nanomaterials and flexible electrode from BC for various energy storage are addressed. Moreover, the perspectives are given for the future development, including several significant kinds of study for applications in the rechargeable battery.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose, a type of biopolymer, demonstrates considerable potential as a raw material for the development of electrochemical energy storage devices. This review offers a comprehensive overview of bacterial cellulose, focusing on its applications in electrolytes, binders, and separators, as well as its role as a derived host for anodes and cathodes. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is produced via the fermentation of various microorganisms. It has an interconnected 3D porous network structure, strong water‐locking ability, high mechanical strength, chemical stability, anti‐shrinkage properties, renewability, biodegradability, and a low cost. BC‐based materials and their derivatives have been utilized to fabricate advanced functional materials for electrochemical energy storage devices and flexible electronics. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of BC‐related functional materials for electrochemical energy storage devices. The origin, components, and microstructure of BC are discussed, followed by the advantages of using BC in energy storage applications. Then, BC‐related material design strategies in terms of solid electrolytes, binders, and separators, as well as BC‐derived carbon nanofibers for electroactive materials are discussed. Finally, a short conclusion and outlook regarding current challenges and future research opportunities related to BC‐based advanced functional materials for next‐generation energy storage devices suggestions are proposed.

Abstract:The emerging generation of flexible energy storage devices has accelerated the research pace in terms of new materials, new processing techniques, and new designs that can meet the demands of mechanical stability upon bending or stretching at an acceptable cost, without compromising their electrochemical performance. Among the materials currently explored, biomass-derived materials have received extensive attention, because they are renewable, low in cost, earth-abundant and structurally diverse. This review is focused on fundamentals and applications of the bio-derived material bacterial cellulose (BC) in flexible electrochemical energy storage systems. Specifically, recent advances are summarized in the utilization of BC in stretchable substrates, carbonaceous species, and scaffolds for flexible core component construction. Finally, several perspectives related to BC-based materials for flexible electrochemical energy storages are proposed, aiming to provide possible future research directions in these fields.

Abstract:This article provides a comprehensive review of the processing and applications of bacterial cellulose (BC) for energy conversion and storage devices. These emerging technologies enable the transformation of sustainable energy sources into electricity. Once converted, energy storage devices are vital for stable energy supply. To promote green manufacturing practices in this field, bio-based materials are explored as alternative materials for energy devices, addressing the growing demand for sustainable solutions. From a research and development perspective, the materials chosen for energy devices must exhibit exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, along with the necessary chemical reactivity to unlock new applications. Furthermore, for successful commercialization and industrialization, these materials must be suitable for large-scale production within practical timeframes. BC fulfills all of these requirements. The review begins with an overview of BC growth, detailing the composition and operating parameters of the culture medium and the design of bioreactors for large-scale production. It then defines and summarizes both in-situ and ex-situ modifications and processing strategies, offering a comprehensive perspective on these techniques. Unique and interesting properties linking BC's structure to its properties are reviewed to demonstrate its potential as a substitute for benchmark materials. The exceptional performance and synergistic effects of BC-derived hybrid materials highlight their potential for state-of-the-art applications in energy devices, and are suitable for the next-generation energy devices. The papers reviewed in this work have gained significant attention and been widely cited over the past 10 years for their relevance to various practical applications, allowing readers to have a better understanding in development of BC based materials for energy conversion and conversion devices.

Abstract:Living in a world of heavy industrialization and confronted by the ever-deteriorating environment, the human race is now undertaking serious efforts to reach the target of carbon neutrality. One major step is to promote the development of sustainable electrochemical energy storage and conversion technologies based on green resources instead of the traditional nonreusable petroleum-based technologies. As an almost inexhaustible bioresource, nanocellulose derived from natural biomass exhibits outstanding physiochemical properties that could be well leveraged to bring about numerous opportunities for electrochemical processes. Through structure engineering, nanocellulose with a width of a few tens of nanometers and a length of up to micrometers could be realized. The drastic reduction in dimensions leads to superior mechanical, optical, and functional properties inaccessible to the bulky cellulose counterpart. In this review, different types of nanocellulose with distinctive physiochemical properties and their respective preparation methods are first examined. This is followed by a detailed and insightful analysis of the superiority and unprecedented performance gains that nanocellulose imparts to different electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications as a result of nanosizing. Finally, we humbly put forward our perspectives on the problems regarding current studies as well as on the future research direction for nanocellulose-mediated electrochemical processes to enable practical applications. This review is intended as guidance to initiate cross-disciplinary research effort in this engaging field and help evoke inspiration to effect solutions to critical energy issues of the day. Abstract:Nanocellulose has emerged as a highly promising and sustainable nanomaterial due to its unique structures, exceptional properties, and abundance in nature. In this comprehensive review, we delve into current research activities focused on harnessing the potential of nanocellulose for advanced electrochemical energy storage applications. We commence with a brief introduction to the structural features of cellulose nanofibers found within the cellulose resources’ cell walls. Subsequently, we explore various processes that have been investigated for utilizing cellulose in the realm of energy storage. In contrast to traditional binders, we place significant emphasis on the utilization of solid electrolytes and 3D printing techniques. Additionally, we examine different application areas, including supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and Zn-ion batteries. Within this section, our primary focus lies in integrating nanocellulose with other active materials to develop flexible substrates such as films and aerogels. Abstract:Nanocellulose is a green nanomaterial obtained from natural plants,several marine animals and exceptional microbes.As the results of its unique network structure,outstanding mechanical properties and high specific surface area,nanocellulose can be effectively compounded via layer-by-layer self-assembling,in-situ chemical polymerization and electrochemical deposition with various nanoparticles such as metal oxides,conductive polymers,and two-dimension nanomaterials,to form different nanocellulose-based porous film material and electroconductive composites.These nanocomposites have great application prospects in the separator and electrode materials for mental ion battery and supercapacitor.Based on the differences in source materials,preparation methods,and fiber morphology,nanocellulose is divideed into cellulose nanocrystal,cellulose nanofibril,bacterial nanocelluloe,and electrospun cellulose,and the former three are widely used for energy storage materials.Naturally,nanocellulose is frequently mixed with water and maintains in the stable colloidal state.After the loss of water,the nanocellulose mixture is able to form self-assembled nanocellulose film with outstanding mechanical properties and thermal stability.The film exhibits good ability of moisturizing in electrolyte solution and smoothness for free ion and electron transfer as a promising choice for separator in green energy storage.Due to the advantages of sufficient active groups,unique network and easiness to form film,nanocellulose,incorporating with other conductive active ingredients such as carbon nanomaterials,metal oxide,and conductive polymers,plays significant role of skeleton material in the preparation of electrode for energy storage.The nanocellulose can also be directly carbonized for electrode materials,and its electrochemical performance is closely related to the degree of graphitization.To improve the electrochemical performance,the carbonized nanocellulose is often further treated by N-and C-doping.Currently,the major nanocellulose based electrode materials include nano-cellulose carbon fiber materials,two-dimension nanomaterials,conductive polymer materials and multi-component materials.Although nanocelluse poses incomparable merits and perspective future in the application to green energy storage,it still faces huge challenges in the incorporation pattern between nanocellulose and electrode active material,poor interfacial compatibility and microstructure regulation.It is suggested that the future work would focus on the tough problems of maximizing the size effect in nanometer and instinctive network structure,building more elaborate nano-system and designing energy storage device with higher conversion efficiency.This paper briefly introduces varieties and properties of nanocellulose,highlights its present application status in separator materials and novel electrode materials,and predicts its future development.

Abstract:The interest in studying cellulose especially bacterial cellulose (BC) and BC-based composites has increased dramatically, due to their outstanding properties. Among them, BC-based electroconductive composites seem to capture more attention because of their perfect structure and controllable synthesis as well as potential values. Meanwhile, the development of carbon fibers is becoming a hot spot in recent years. Here, we concentrate on describing their numerous approaches, and some improvements in the process, which are discussed in greater details with an emphasis on their functional properties and potential applications. The challenges in commercial scale applications are discussed and the efficiencies of various electroconductive composites are compared, in order to exploit its far-reaching application value.

Here, we present a comprehensive review of the current research activities that center on the development of nanocellulose for advanced electrochemical energy storage. We begin with a brief introduction of the structural features of cellulose nanofibers within the cell walls of cellulose resources. We then focus on a variety of processes that have been explored to fabricate nanocellulose with various structures and surface chemical properties. Next, we highlight a number of energy storage systems that utilize nanocellulose-derived materials, including supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and sodium-ion batteries. Abstract:The ongoing surge in demand for high‐performance energy storage systems inspires the relentless pursuit of advanced materials and structures. Components of energy storage systems are generally based on inorganic/metal compounds, carbonaceous substances, and petroleum‐derived hydrocarbon chemicals. These traditional materials, however, may have difficulties fulfilling the ever‐increasing requirements of energy storage systems. Recently, nanocellulose has garnered considerable attention as an exceptional 1D element due to its natural abundance, environmental friendliness, recyclability, structural uniqueness, facile modification, and dimensional stability. Recent advances and future outlooks of nanocellulose as a green material for energy storage systems are described, with a focus on its application in supercapacitors, lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), and post‐LIBs. Nanocellulose is typically classified as cellulose nanofibril (CNF), cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), and bacterial cellulose (BC). The unusual 1D structure and chemical functionalities of nanocellulose bring unprecedented benefits to the fabrication and performance of energy storage materials and systems, which lie far beyond those achievable with conventional synthetic materials. It is believed that this progress report can stimulate research interests in nanocellulose as a promising material, eventually widening material horizons for the development of next‐generation energy storage systems, that will lead us closer to so‐called Battery‐of‐Things (BoT) era.

Abstract:The growing demand for energy and environmental issues are the main concern for the sustainable development of modern society. Replacing toxic and expensive materials with inexpensive and biodegradable biomaterials is the main challenge for researchers. Nanocomposites are of the utmost consideration for their application in energy storage devices because of their specific electrochemical properties. Cellulose-based bionanocomposites have added a new dimension to this field since these are developed from available renewable biomaterials. Studies on developing electrodes, separators, collectors, and electrolytes for the batteries have been conducted based on these composites rigorously. Electrodes and separators made of these composites for the supercapacitors have also been investigated. Researchers have used a wide range of micro- and nano-structural cellulose along with nanostructured inorganic materials to produce cellulose-based bionanocomposites for energy devices, i.e., supercapacitors and batteries. The presence of cellulosic materials enhances the loading capacity of active materials and uniform porous structure in the electrode matrix. Thus, it has shown improved electrochemical properties. Therefore, these can help to develop biodegradable, lightweight, malleable, and strong energy storage devices. In this review article, the manufacturing process, properties, applications, and possible opportunities of cellulose-based bionanocomposites in energy storage devices have been emphasized. Its challenges and opportunities have also been discussed.

Abstract:This review paper provides a recent overview of current international research that is being conducted into the functional properties of cellulose as a nanomaterial. A particular emphasis is placed on fundamental and applied research that is being undertaken to generate applications, which are now becoming a real prospect given the developments in the field over the last 20 years. A short introduction covers the context of the work, and definitions of the different forms of cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) that are most widely studied. We also address the terminology used for CNMs, suggesting a standard way to classify these materials. The reviews are separated out into theme areas, namely healthcare, water purification, biocomposites, and energy. Each section contains a short review of the field within the theme and summarizes recent work being undertaken by the groups represented. Topics that are covered include cellulose nanocrystals for directed growth of tissues, bacterial cellulose in healthcare, nanocellulose for drug delivery, nanocellulose for water purification, nanocellulose for thermoplastic composites, nanocellulose for structurally colored materials, transparent wood biocomposites, supercapacitors and batteries.

Abstract:Recently, in response to the major challenges in energy development and environmental issues, tremendous efforts are being devoted to developing electrochemical energy storage devices based on green sustainable resources. As a class of green materials, nanocellulose (NC) has received extensive attention. In this review, we summarize the research progress of NC derived materials in electrochemical energy storage. Specifically, we first introduce various synthesis methods based on NC and the pretreatment process to increase the conductivity. Then we focus on the specific application of NC in electrochemical energy storage devices. Finally, we summarize the previously reported work and put forward views on the further development of NC in the field of electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC), a fascinating and renewable polymer, can be applied widely in various bio-based materials. However, its synthesis is generally limited by medium acidosis. Herein, we demonstrated a built-in galvanic cell within the BC fermentation medium to alleviate the acidosis, by which BC yield was promoted by 191%, and simultaneously the yield of electrical power of 0.68 W to 8.10 W during the incubation.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for energy storage and the quest to overcome the shortcomings of lithium-ion batteries, various zinc-based batteries are developing rapidly for their high safety, low cost and reliable ecological compatibility. Cellulosic materials made from abundant natural resources are becoming a widespread concern of scientists due to the rich, versatile, sustainable and inexpensive properties. They could be endowed with many new properties after modification or nano treatment, such as the better solubility in common solvents and improved mechanical properties, which would facilitate the reaction kinetics and longevity of the batteries. Herein, we divided natural cellulose into three categories, namely pristine cellulose, cellulose derivatives and nanocellulose, and reviewed in detail their inherent functions in the assembly of electrodes, electrolytes and separators in zinc batteries. These cellulose materials show great prospects in improving the electrochemical performance and durability of zinc batteries by inhibiting zinc corrosion, preventing dendrite growth, providing greater mechanical properties, improving ionic conductivity and catalyzing chemical conversions. At last, the current challenges and future development of cellulose in zinc batteries were presented.

Abstract:Cellulose-based conductive materials (CCMs) have emerged as a promising class of materials with various applications in energy and sensing. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthesis methods and properties of CCMs and their applications in batteries, supercapacitors, chemical sensors, biosensors, and mechanical sensors. Derived from renewable resources, cellulose serves as a scaffold for integrating conductive additives such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, metal particles, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), carbides and nitrides of transition metals (MXene), and conductive polymers. This combination results in materials with excellent electrical conductivity while retaining the eco-friendliness and biocompatibility of cellulose. In the field of energy storage, CCMs show great potential for batteries and supercapacitors due to their high surface area, excellent mechanical strength, tunable chemistry, and high porosity. Their flexibility makes them ideal for wearable and flexible electronics, contributing to advances in portable energy storage and electronic integration into various substrates. In addition, CCMs play a key role in sensing applications. Their biocompatibility allows for the development of implantable biosensors and biodegradable environmental sensors to meet the growing demand for health and environmental monitoring. Looking to the future, this review emphasizes the need for scalable synthetic methods, improved mechanical and thermal properties, and exploration of novel cellulose sources and modifications. Continued innovation in CCMs promises to revolutionize sustainable energy storage and sensing technologies, providing environmentally friendly solutions to pressing global challenges.

Abstract:ConspectusCellulose is the most abundant biopolymer on Earth and has long been used as a sustainable building block of conventional paper. Note that nanocellulose accounts for nearly 40% of wood's weight and can be extracted using well-developed methods. Due to its appealing mechanical and electrochemical properties, including high specific modulus (∼100 GPa/(g/cm3)), excellent stability in most solvents, and stability over a wide electrochemical window, nanocellulose has been widely used as a separator, electrolyte, binder, and substrate material for energy storage. Additionally, nanocellulose-derived carbon materials have also drawn increasing scientific interest in sustainable energy storage due to their low-cost and raw-material abundance, high conductivity, and rational electrochemical performance. The inexpensive and environmentally friendly nature of nanocellulose and its derivatives as well as simple fabrication techniques make nanocellulose-based energy storage devices promising candidates for the future of "green" and renewable electronics. For nanocellulose-based energy storage, structure engineering and design play a vital role in achieving desired electrochemical properties and performances. Thus, it is important to identify suitable structure and design engineering strategies and to better understand their relationship.In this Account, we review recent developments in nanocellulose-based energy storage. Due to the limited space, we will mainly focus on structure design and engineering strategies in macrofiber, paper, and three-dimensional (3D) structured electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices and highlight progress made in our group. We first present the structure and properties of nanocellulose, with a particular discussion of nanocellulose from wood materials. We then go on to discuss studies on nanocellulose-based macrofiber, paper, and 3D wood- and other aerogel-based EES devices. Within this discussion, we highlight the use of natural nanocellulose as a flexible substrate for a macrofiber supercapacitor and an excellent electrolyte reservoir for a breathable textile lithium–oxygen battery. Paper batteries and supercapacitors using nanocellulose as a green dispersant, nanocellulose-based paper as a flexible substrate, and nanocellulose as separator and electrolyte are also examined. We highlight recent progress on wood-based batteries and supercapacitors, focusing on the advantages of wood materials for energy storage, the structure design and engineering strategies, and their microstructure and electrochemical properties. We discuss the influence of structure (particularly pores) on the electrochemical performance of the energy storage devices. By taking advantage of the straight, nature-made channels in wood materials, ultrathick, highly loaded, and low-tortuosity energy storage devices are demonstrated. Finally, we offer concluding remarks on the challenges and directions of future research in the field of nanocellulose-based energy storage devices.

Abstract:The various forms of cellulose-based materials possess high mechanical and thermal stabilities, as well as three-dimensional open network structures with high aspect ratios capable of incorporating other materials to produce composites for a wide range of applications. Being the most prevalent natural biopolymer on the Earth, cellulose has been used as a renewable replacement for many plastic and metal substrates, in order to diminish pollutant residues in the environment. As a result, the design and development of green technological applications of cellulose and its derivatives has become a key principle of ecological sustainability. Recently, cellulose-based mesoporous structures, flexible thin films, fibers, and three-dimensional networks have been developed for use as substrates in which conductive materials can be loaded for a wide range of energy conversion and energy conservation applications. The present article provides an overview of the recent advancements in the preparation of cellulose-based composites synthesized by combining metal/semiconductor nanoparticles, organic polymers, and metal-organic frameworks with cellulose. To begin, a brief review of cellulosic materials is given, with emphasis on their properties and processing methods. Further sections focus on the integration of cellulose-based flexible substrates or three-dimensional structures into energy conversion devices, such as photovoltaic solar cells, triboelectric generators, piezoelectric generators, thermoelectric generators, as well as sensors. The review also highlights the uses of cellulose-based composites in the separators, electrolytes, binders, and electrodes of energy conservation devices such as lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, the use of cellulose-based electrodes in water splitting for hydrogen generation is discussed. In the final section, we propose the underlying challenges and outlook for the field of cellulose-based composite materials.
