Abstract:In the past decades, enormous efforts have been put into visible light–promoted photocatalytic chemical transformations. Among the intensely studied photocatalytic systems, metal‐free, pure organic and heterogeneous photocatalysts based on conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), a class of organic porous materials featuring π‐conjugated backbone and permanent microporosity, draw much attention. The CMP‐based photocatalysts are highly attractive because of their pure organic nature, ease of synthesis, structural diversity, and nontoxicity, as well as low costs. Over the past years, various CMPs have been synthesized for a broad range of photocatalytic applications. Herein, the aim is to deliver an updated summary of this field with the focus on crucial factors, which largely affect the catalytic performance of CMPs. To name a few, band structure, charge separation and transfer, and morphology are described combined with specific energy‐ and organosynthesis‐related applications such as water splitting, CO2 reduction, organic photoredox reactions, etc.

Abstract:In recent decades, the efficient utilization of solar energy through heterogeneous photocatalytic chemical transformation has attracted much attention. As emerging metal-free, pure organic and heterogeneous photocatalysts, π-conjugated polymers (CPs) have been used in visible-light-driven chemical transformations due to their stability, high specific surface area, metal-free nature, and high structural designability. In this review, we summarize the synthesis protocols and design strategies for efficient CP-based photocatalysts based on the photocatalytic mechanisms. Then we highlight the key progress in light-driven chemical transformation using CPs developed by our group. Finally, we present the outlook and possible challenges for future progress of the field.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysis have been deemed as a versatile and colorful platform for exploring efficient transformation systems. Henceforth, the design of photocatalysts underpins a wide range of research interests. By virtue of synthetic versatility, stability, non-toxicity, purely organic properties, tunable semiconductive structures, and remarkable visible-light absorbance, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have emerged as an attractive new class of semiconductor materials that show great potential for tackling important energy and environmental challenges. Over the past decade, immense efforts have been devoted toward the construction of CMPs-based photocatalysts for versatile photocatalytic transformations. This review aims to summarize the latest representative advances in the field of carbazolic CMPs, focusing on various design strategies for the construction of tailor-made skeletons that have direct impact on their charge dynamics and thus photocatalytic performances, especially on their specific photocatalytic efficiency for organic transformations. Scrutinizing the photocatalytic features and elucidating the related design principles, it is fully described how structure modification of polycarbazoles could have an effect on optical properties, and thus on photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the bottlenecks that need to be addressed, and the future research directions of CMPs are identified in the area of photocatalysis.

Abstract:AbstractConjugated microporous polymers are a unique class of polymers that combine extended π‐conjugation with inherent porosity. However, these polymers are synthesized through solution‐phase reactions to yield insoluble and unprocessable solids, which preclude not only the evaluation of their conducting properties but also the fabrication of thin films for device implementation. Here, we report a strategy for the synthesis of thin films of π‐conjugated microporous polymers by designing thiophene‐based electropolymerization at the solution–electrode interface. High‐quality films are prepared on a large area of various electrodes, the film thickness is controllable, and the films are used for device fabrication. These films are outstanding hole conductors and, upon incorporation of fullerenes into the pores, function as highly efficient photoactive layers for energy conversions. Our film strategy may boost the applications in photocatalysis, energy storage, and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Efforts and challenges when synthesizing, characterizing and testing conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) in fields related to energy storage, conversion and production are reviewed from the author's perspective. The current state-of-the-art of such materials from synthesis and morphological control to applications that encompass gas and energy storage, catalysis and hydrogen production is reviewed. Contrary to classical pi-conjugated polymers, special emphasis is given to the morphological aspects of CPPs and the control of surface area, porosity and pore volume and the implications of those properties in the aforementioned applications.

Abstract:Solar energy conversion has nowadays attracted research interests of the community, wherein conjugated polymers (CPs) become a class of workhorses on photon-to-electron and photon-to-fuel conversion studies. In recent years, exciting breakthroughs have been made in these multi-interdisciplinary fields, with the assistance of the intrinsic flexibilities on tuning optoelectronic, mechanical and structural properties of CPs. In this review, we summarize the recent notable development of CPs in polymer solar cells, perovskite solar cells, and photocatalysts, wherein CPs function well as light-capture and conversion components for polymer solar cells and photocatalysts as well as charge extraction materials for perovskite solar cells. By analyzing the principles, status, and structural-properties of these areas, we outline the design strategies and perspectives of CPs for further advancing solar energy conversions.

Abstract:<p>With the ambition of solving the challenges of the shortage of fossil fuels and their associated environmental pollution, visible‐light‐driven splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen using semiconductor photocatalysts has emerged as a promising technology to provide environmentally friendly energy vectors. Among the current library of developed photocatalysts, organic conjugated polymers present unique advantages of sufficient light‐absorption efficiency, excellent stability, tunable electronic properties, and economic applicability. As a class of rising photocatalysts, organic conjugated polymers offer high flexibility in tuning the framework of the backbone and porosity to fulfill the requirements for photocatalytic applications. In the past decade, significant progress has been made in visible‐light‐driven water splitting employing organic conjugated polymers. The recent development of the structural design principles of organic conjugated polymers (including linear, crosslinked, and supramolecular self‐assembled polymers) toward efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution, and overall water splitting is described, thus providing a comprehensive reference for the field. Finally, current challenges and perspectives are also discussed.</p>

Abstract:Visible-light-driven chemical transformations via photocatalysis have witnessed an explosive growth in the past decade, accompanying the enormous development of the photocatalyst design. Among the intensely investigated systems, molecular photocatalysts as transition-metal complexes and conjugated organic dyes have been established as efficient homogeneous photocatalytic systems for organic photoredox reactions. Nonetheless, heterogeneous photocatalysts possess considerable advantages such as being highly stable, easily separable, and reusable. Especially, the organic, macromolecular heterogeneous photocatalysts have emerged as a nontoxic and potentially more environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional catalytic systems. Among them, poly(benzothiadiazoles) and their derivatives have demonstrated the ability to catalyze various organic photoredox reactions under visible-light irradiation. In this Review, the recent development of metal-free and heterogeneous photocatalytic systems based on poly(benzothiadiazoles) and their derivatives is summarized. An overview of organic photoredox reactions mediated via radicals obtained from the photogenerated electron and hole of the photocatalysts is given, and the underlying mechanisms of photochemical transformations are illuminated. The structural design principles of poly(benzothiadiazoles) for targeted photoredox reactions are also discussed.

Abstract:Photocatalysis can create a green way to produce clean energy resources, degrade pollutants and achieve carbon neutrality, making the construction of efficient photocatalysts significant in solving environmental issues. Conjugated polymers (CPs) with adjustable band structures have superior light-absorption capacity and flexible morphology that facilitate contact with other components to form advanced heterojunctions. Interface engineering can strengthen the interfacial contact between the components and further enlarge the interfacial contact area, enhance light absorption, accelerate charge transfer and improve the reusability of the composites. In order to throw some new light on heterojunction interface regulation at a molecular level, herein we summarize CP-based composites with improved photocatalytic performance according to the types of interactions (covalent bonding, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking, and other polar interactions) between the components and introduce the corresponding interface building methods, identifying techniques. Then the roles of interfaces in different photocatalytic applications are discussed. Finally, we sum up the existing problems in interface engineering of CP-based composites and look forward to the possible solutions.

Abstract:Solar-driven redox chemical processes necessitate the discovery of new photocatalytic materials. As such, pyrene-based porous organic materials have recently been constructed based on resilient and photoactive pyrenes. With a planar π-conjugation, pyrene can be extended toward the foundational building blocks. In principle, pyrene-based porous organic materials can be designed and constructed as potent photocatalysts. Generally, there are two types of covalent bonds, irreversible and reversible, that knit pyrene molecular building blocks for the construction of porous organic materials. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are generated with irreversible covalent bonds, whereas covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are afforded with reversible ones. Pyrene-based CMPs and COFs can drive various significant photocatalytic reactions, such as selective reduction of protons, carbon dioxide, toxic metals, and oxygen, and selective oxidation of organic molecules. Compared to amorphous CMPs, crystallinity defines COFs. The structure–activity relationships of pyrene-based CMPs and COFs are thoroughly summarized, discussed, and compared in this Review. Note that a reduction event is always associated with an oxidation event and vice versa. Moreover, an electron transfer is typically accompanied by a proton transfer for a complete photocatalytic reaction. Notably, the reaction mechanisms of visible light photocatalysis over pyrene-based CMPs and COFs are also discussed meticulously. This Review can provide a blueprint for developing state-of-the-art porous organic materials for solar photocatalysis.

Abstract:Conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) have been widely reported as promising photocatalysts. However, the realization of powerful photocatalytic hydrogen production performance still benefits from the rational design of molecular frameworks and the appropriate choice of building monomers. Herein, we synthesized two novel conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) by copolymerizing pyrene and 1,3,5-triazine building blocks. It is found that minor structural changes in the peripheral groups of the triazine units can greatly affect the photocatalytic activity of the polymers. Compared with the phenyl-linkage unit, the thiophene-linkage unit can give CPP a wider absorption range of visible light, a narrower band gap, a higher transmission and separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers (electrons/holes), and a better interface contact with the photocatalytic reaction solution. The catalyst containing thiophene-triazine (ThPy-CPP) has an efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 21.65 and 16.69 mmol g −1 h −1 under full-arc spectrum and visible light without the addition of a Pt co-catalyst, respectively, much better than the one containing phenyl-triazine (PhPy-CPP, only 5.73 and 3.48 mmol g −1 h −1 ). This study provides a promising direction to design and construct highly efficient, cost-effective CPP-based photocatalysts, for exploring the application of noble metal-free catalysts in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:This review summarizes the applications of CMPs in photocatalytic hydrogen precipitation, pollutant degradation and organic synthesis in the last five years. In honor of the significant contribution of Professor Kai AI Zhang to this endeavor, a summary of his research on CMPs is provided simultaneously. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), distinguished by their extended π‐conjugated backbones, nontoxicity and micropore characteristics, provide notable benefits in the development of heterogeneous catalysis systems for task‐specific transformations. This review aims to summarize the up‐to‐date advances in the field of photocatalysis by CMPs, with a particular focus on the applications of CMPs in photocatalytic hydrogen precipitation, pollutant degradation and organic transformation in the last 5 years. Meanwhile, this review also summarizes the major challenges in this field and gives suggestions for the feasible direction of development. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers (CPs) as photocatalysts have evoked substantial interest. Their geometries and physical (e.g., chemical and thermal stability and solubility), optical (e.g., light absorption range), and electronic properties (e.g., charge carrier mobility, redox potential, and exciton binding energy) can be easily tuned via structural design. In addition, they are of light weight (i.e., mainly composed of C, N, O, and S). To improve the photocatalytic performance of CPs and better understand the catalytic mechanisms, many strategies with respect to material design have been proposed. These include tuning the bandgap, enlarging the surface area, enabling more efficient separation of electron–hole pairs, and enhancing the charge carrier mobility. In particular, donor–acceptor (D–A) polymers were demonstrated as a promising platform to develop high-performance photocatalysts due to their easily tunable bandgaps, high charge carrier mobility, and efficient intramolecular charge transfer. In this minireview, recent advances of D–A polymers in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution are summarized with a particular focus on modulating the optical and electronic properties of CPs by varying the acceptor units. The challenges and prospects associated with D–A polymer-based photocatalysts are described as well.

Photoactive Conjugated Polyelectrolyte‐Ionomer Composite Coatings for Versatile Photoreactors

Abstract:Conjugated polymers are promising photoactive materials for heterogeneous photocatalysis, but their limited solubility hinders the scalability in practical use. Herein, we develop polymer composites using processable conjugated polyelectrolytes and ionomers to fabricate photocatalytic thin films with visible light activity. The composite of conjugated polyelectrolytes and ionomers with identical counter anions in their side chains enables compatibility in solvents and stabilized charged states within the composite. This facilitates the development of stable coatings on diverse substrates and enhances charge separation and transport. The resulting photocatalytic thin films exhibited a 1.5‐fold increase in photocurrent response and a 7.0‐fold increase in mechanical strength compared to the pristine conjugated polymer. Photoactive coatings with polymer composites showcase the potential for synergistic photocatalytic oxidation of NADH, organic dye, and sulfide under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic thin films are stable, versatile, and scalable for various photocatalytic reactions, showing promise for developing upscaled photoreactors.

Abstract:Organic visible light-active porous polymers have been established as a novel promising class of heterogeneous photocatalysts for a variety of important photoredox reactions. To date, given the usually fully conjugated nature of most polymer-based photocatalysts, precise control of the energy band structure and thereby their redox potentials in photocatalytic reactions while retaining highly active surface area is a huge challenge. Here, we design a series of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with precise control of the conjugation length within the polymer architecture as efficient metal-free photocatalysts. The polymers exhibit a high intrinsic surface areas of up to 1070 m(2)/g as well as tunable optical and redox properties that allow applications in C-H activation reactions driven selectively either by the photogenerated electron or hole species. Furthermore, as an attractive example for high-value chemical conversions, the formation of dantrolene, an active pharmaceutical ingredient, was successfully catalyzed by the PAFs in the simple one-pot cascade synthesis.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with high surface areas, tunable building blocks, and fully conjugated structures have found important applications in optoelectronics. Here, we report a new series of CMPs with tunable band gaps by introducing thiazolo[5,4- d] thiazole as the linkage. Because they are synthetic polymers, the geometries and structures could be rationally designed. Their intrinsic wide visible-light absorption properties and layered architectures endow them with a promising photocatalytic performance. The role of geometries, surface areas, and morphologies of the CMPs in photocatalysis abilities is examined and discussed. The results indicate that geometries have a direct impact on the surface areas and morphologies of the CMPs and thus exert great influence on photocatalysis.
