Abstract:In recent time, Organic Solar Cells (OSCs) have made a great progress in pursuing high power conversion, reaching the application threshold. Researchers have advanced past basic concepts of charge carrier dynamics in organic semiconductors to create devices with an experimental power conversion efficiency of about 18%. This review highlights the progress of OSC efficiency and investigate the state-of-art of organic cells in various factors such as temperature, energy conversion efficiency, solar shedding, operation and monitoring that affect the solar panel efficiency. Literature has shown how organic solar cells are seen as the solar technology of the future where it is offering the lowest energy payback times, ecology sustainability, while its energy efficiency still dropping, and a high energy loss is observed.

Abstract:During past several years, the photovoltaic performances of organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved rapid progress with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 18%, demonstrating a great practical application prospect. The development of material science including conjugated polymer donors, oligomer-like organic molecule donors, fused and nonfused ring acceptors, polymer acceptors, single-component organic solar cells and water/alcohol soluble interface materials are the key research topics in OSC field. Herein, the recent progress of these aspects is systematically summarized. Meanwhile, the current problems and future development are also discussed.

Abstract:In the last few decades, organic solar cells (OSCs) have drawn broad interest owing to their advantages such as being low cost, flexible, semitransparent, non-toxic, and ideal for roll-to-roll large-scale processing. Significant advances have been made in the field of OSCs containing high-performance active layer materials, electrodes, and interlayers, as well as novel device structures. Particularly, the innovation of active layer materials, including novel acceptors and donors, has contributed significantly to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement in OSCs. In this review, high-performance acceptors, containing fullerene derivatives, small molecular, and polymeric non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, highly efficient donor materials designed for fullerene- and NFA-based OSCs are also presented. Additionally, motivated by the incessant developments of donor and acceptor materials, recent advances in the field of ternary and tandem OSCs are reviewed as well.

Abstract:AbstractSingle‐junction organic solar cells (OSCs) have made significant progress in recent years. Innovations in material design and device optimization have improved the power conversion efficiencies to over 19 %. In this Minireview, based on recent advances, we discuss molecular design strategies to tune the absorption spectrum, energy level, and intermolecular aggregation as well as highlight the role of molecular electrostatic potential in decreasing energy loss. Then, we introduce the latest progress in four types of OSCs composed of different donor:acceptor combinations: polymer donor:small‐molecule acceptor, all‐polymer, all‐small‐molecule, and small‐molecule donor:polymer acceptor. Finally, the challenges of OSCs in practical applications, including material cost, stability, and multi‐function integration, are discussed.

Abstract:Among other photovoltaic techniques including perovskite solar cells and organic solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are considered to be a potential alternative to conventional silicon solar cells. Porphyrins are promising dyes with the properties of easy modification and superior light-harvesting capability. However, porphyrin dyes still suffer from a number of unfavorable aspects, which need to be addressed in order to improve the photovoltaic performance. This feature article briefly summarizes the recent progress in improving the V oc and J sc of porphyrin-based DSSCs in terms of molecular engineering by modifying the porphyrin macrocycle, donor and acceptor moieties of the porphyrin dyes, coadsorption of the porphrin dyes with bulky coadsorbents like chenodeoxycholic acid ( CDCA ), and cosensitization of the porphyrin dyes with metal-free organic dyes. Notably, concerted companion (CC) dyes are described in detail, which have been constructed by linking a porphyrin dye subunit and a metal-free organic dye subunit with flexible alkoxy chains to achieve panchromatic absorption and concerted enhancement of V oc and J sc . In one sentence, this article is expected to provide further insights into the development of high performance DSSCs through the design and syntheses of efficient porphyrin dyes and CC dyes in combination with device optimization to achieve simultaneously elevated V oc and J sc , which may inspire and promote further progress in the commercialization of the DSSCs.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) are considered as a promising new generation of clean energy. Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure has been widely employed in the active layer of efficient OSCs. However, precise regulation of morphology in BHJ is still challenging due to the competitive coupling between crystallization and phase separation. Recently, a novel pseudo-planar heterojunction (PPHJ) structure, prepared through solution sequential deposition, has attracted much attention. It is an easy-to-prepare structure in which the phase separation structures, interfaces, and molecular packing can be separately controlled. Employing PPHJ structure, the properties of OSCs, such as power conversion efficiency, stability, transparency, flexibility, and so on, are usually better than its BHJ counterpart. Hence, a comprehensive understanding of the film-forming process, morphology control, and device performance of PPHJ structure should be considered. In terms of the representative works about PPHJ, this review first introduces the fabrication process of active layers based on PPHJ structure. Second, the widely applied morphology control methods in PPHJ structure are summarized. Then, the influences of PPHJ structure on device performance and other property are reviewed, which largely expand its application. Finally, a brief prospect and development tendency of PPHJ devices are discussed with the consideration of their challenges. This review first introduces the fabrication process of active layers based on pseudo-planar heterojunction (PPHJ) structure, then mainly reviews the morphology control methods of PPHJ, and its unique device properties. image

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have gained a rapid development in the past two decades and the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of single-junction OSC has recently approached 20%. The novel materials and device engineering are two key factors of this evolution. In this review, the device engineering, including morphology characterization and optimization, device physics, flexible and large-area OSCs, and stability of OSCs are systematically summarized. In addition, the current challenges, problems and future developments are also discussed.

Abstract:With developments in materials, thin‐film processing, fine‐tuning of morphology, and optimization of device fabrication, the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) has improved markedly in recent years. Designing low‐bandgap materials has been a focus in order to maximize solar energy conversion. However, there are only a few successful low‐bandgap donor materials developed with near‐infrared (NIR) absorption that are well matched to the existing efficient acceptors. Porphyrin has shown great potential as a useful building block for constructing low‐bandgap donor materials due to its large conjugated plane and strong absorption. Porphyrin‐based donor materials have been shown to contribute to many record‐high device efficiencies in small molecule, tandem, ternary, flexible, and OSC/perovskite hybrid solar cells. Specifically, non‐fullerene small‐molecule solar cells have recently shown a high power conversion efficiency of 12% using low‐bandgap porphyrin. All these have validated the great potential of porphyrin derivatives as effective donor materials and made DPPEZnP‐TRs a family of best low‐bandgap donor materials in the OSC field so far. Here, recent progress in the rational design, morphology, dynamics, and multi‐functional applications starting from 2015 will be highlighted to deepen understanding of the structure–property relationship. Finally, some future directions of porphyrin‐based OSCs are presented.

Abstract:All‐small‐molecule organic solar cells (ASM‐OSCs) have achieved exciting research progress in recent years. A brief summary from the perspective of materials, morphology, and device optimization techniques have been performed, which will provide valuable guidelines for further enhancement in ASM‐OSCs area. Active layer material plays a critical role in promoting the performance of an organic solar cell (OSC). Small‐molecule (SM) materials have the merits of well‐defined chemical structures, few batch‐to‐batch variations, facile synthesis and purification procedures, and easily tuned properties. SM‐donor and non‐fullerene acceptor (NFA) innovations have recently produced all‐small‐molecule (ASM) devices with power conversion efficiencies that exceed 17% and approach those of their polymer‐based counterparts, thereby demonstrating their great future commercialization potential. In this review, recent progress in both SM donors and NFAs to illustrate structure–property relationships and various morphology‐regulation strategies are summarized. Finally, ASM‐OSC challenges and outlook are discussed.

Abstract:The performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) has increased substantially over the past 10 years, owing to the development of various high-performance organic electron–acceptor and electron–donor materials, including polymers, small molecules and fullerenes, used in the photoactive layer. Depending on the combination of donor and acceptor materials, OSCs can be categorized into several types: polymer–fullerene, polymer–small molecule, all-polymer and all-small molecule, as well as multicomponent OSCs in which the photoactive layer comprises three or more photoactive components. This Review provides an overview of the historical development of the different material types used in the photoactive layer of solution-processed OSCs and compares their advantages and limitations. Effective molecular design strategies for each type of OSC are discussed and promising research directions highlighted, particularly those relevant to facilitating the industrial manufacturing of OSCs.

Abstract:π-Conjugated polymers show promising potential in the application of organic photovoltaics, including organic solar cells (OSCs) and organic photodetectors (OPDs) because of merits of light-weight, flexibility, facilely tuned color, large-scaled solution-processability, etc. Over the past three decades, various π-conjugated polymers have been developed owing to the continuous efforts of researchers, which significantly promote the OPVs technology to an unprecedented stage. In order to reveal the relationship among polymer structures to the optical and electronic properties and interchain aggregation and morphology and finally to device performance, it is of great significance to review the progress of π-conjugated polymers for OPVs, particularly for outstanding achievements in recent all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs), indoor organic photovoltaics (IOPVs), thick-film OSCs, single-component organic solar cells (SCOSCs) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) OPDs. This review highlights general design strategies of π-conjugated polymers for high-performance OPVs, including conjugated backbone engineering, side-chains engineering, regioregularity engineering, halogen substitution and molecular weight control. Then, the development of conjugated polymers for all-PSCs, IOPVs, thick-film OSCs, SCOSCs and OPDs has been summarized. At the end, we summarize the challenges and future directions for studying π-conjugated polymers for OPVs. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of designing π-conjugated polymers is speculated to advance the development of current OPV materials and thus accelerate the ultimate industrialization of the OPV technology.

Abstract:The increasing energy demands of the global community can be met with solar energy. Solution-processed organic solar cells have seen great progress in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) have made enormous progress in recent years and have been considered one of the most promising solar cell technologies for applications in building-integrated windows, agricultural greenhouses, and wearable energy resources. Therefore, through the synergistic efforts of transparent electrodes, engineering in near-infrared photoabsorbent materials, and device engineering, high-performance ST-OSCs have developed, and PCE and average visible transmittance reach over 10% and 40%, respectively. In this review, we present the recent progress in photoabsorbent material engineering and strategies for enhancing the performance of ST-OSCs to help researchers gain a better understanding of structure–property–performance relationships. To conclude, new design concepts in material engineering and outlook are proposed to facilitate the further development of high-performance ST-OSCs.

Abstract:Three novel organic small molecules based on asymmetric porphyrin-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) backbone, namely ZnPTDPP, ZnPTDPPCN and ZnPTDPPO, have been designed and synthesized for solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs). The terminal units of 4-cyanophenyl and 4-methoxyphenyl were introduced into ZnPTDPPCN and ZnPTDPPO respectively, and the structural modification effects on photoelectric and photovoltaic performance were fully investigated. Depending on the characteristics of porphyrin and DPP, all three molecules possess narrow bandgaps of lower than 1.50 eV, showing excellent absorption properties. Structural modification of terminal groups can effectively regulate energy levels of ZnPTDPPCN and ZnPTDPPO. As expected, extended molecular structure from D-A type to D-A-A(1) or D-A-D-1 type, was conducive to enlarging the pi-conjugation and affecting the push-pull effect of intramolecular electrons, thus affecting the photoelectric character of materials. Solution-processed OSCs employing these molecules as the donor materials and PC61BM as the acceptor material were fabricated. It was worth mentioning that devices based on materials ZnPTDPPCN and ZnPTDPPO achieved moderate power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 4.26% and 4.24%, respectively, while ZnPTDPP showed an inferior PCE of 1.46%. To our knowledge, the work based on asymmetric porphyrin-DPP backbone for solution-processed OSCs, is first reported. The work will provide valuable hints for rational design of asymmetric porphyrin-based donor materials.
