Abstract:Recent progress in the adhesion mechanism of mussels has led to great excitement in the field of adhesive materials. Although great progress has been made in the mussel adhesion mechanism and underwater adhesives, there are still many unknowns and challenges in this area. Thus, it is highly important to review the recent progress in mechanisms of mussel adhesion and mussel-inspired adhesives and predict trends for the future. In this review, we (1) summarize the research progress in fundamental interaction mechanisms in natural mussels; (2) discuss the application of the mussel interaction mechanism in the biomimetic mussel adhesive materials, from permanent/high-strength adhesives to temporary/smart adhesives; (3) briefly state the potential applications of the mussel-inspired adhesives in multiple fields, such as engineering applications, smart robotics and biomedicine; (4) summarize the future perspectives and unsolved challenges of mussel adhesion mechanisms and mussel-inspired adhesive materials. We envision that this review will provide an insightful perspective in understanding the mussel adhesion mechanism and directions to further explore, and promote the development of novel biomimetic mussel adhesive materials.

Abstract:In the past decade,mussel-bioinspired surface chemistry has been an interdisciplinary research hotspot in material science,chemistry and biomedicine etc.Dopamine behaves like mussel foot proteins and is able to develop into polydopamine (PDA) nanocoating and nanoparticles with various functions by complicated oxidation,self-polymerization and further self-assembly.PDA nanomaterials have found a variety of applications in separation,adsorption,biomedical and bioadhesives etc.In recent years,we have made many efforts on the preparation and structure control of mussel-bioinspired separation materials.In our works,for the first time,mussel-inspired PDA deposition was introduced to surface construction and functionalization of polymeric porous membranes.A simple model on dopamine evolution and deposition on solid-liquid interface was proposed.Furthermore,a novel thin-film composite nanofiltration(NF) membrane with PDA coating as the active separation layer was developed.These works pioneered a new and simple way of membrane surface functionalization and NF membrane preparation.The aim of this article is to review and highlight the progress of mussel-bioinspired separation materials,especially polymeric separation membranes.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired chemistry has recently emerged as one of the most important and interest surface modification method owing to its gentle experiment conditions, high modification efficiency and universality. The mussel-inspired chemistry is mainly relied on the adhesion of dopamine toward various materials and surfaces. In recent years, great efforts have been devoted to understanding the adhesion mechanism of mussel and extending its applications in different fields. In this mini-review, we present the very recent development of mussel-inspired fabrication of functional materials for environmental applications. The surface modification strategies that based on mussel-inspired chemistry were outlined in the first part. The environmental applications (e.g. oil/water separation, environmental adsorption and catalysts) based on these functional materials are also highlighted in the following sections. Although many advances have been achieved, there still have a plenty of spaces for further development of mussel-inspired surface chemistry for functional materials and their environmental applications. Abstract:Marine organisms, such as mussels and sandcastle worms, can master rapid and robust adhesion in turbulent seawater, becoming leading archetypes for the design of underwater adhesives. The adhesive proteins secreted by the organisms are rich in catecholic amino acids along with ionic and amphiphilic moieties, which mediate the adaptive adhesion mainly through catechol chemistry and coacervation process. Catechol allows a broad range of molecular interactions both at the adhesive-substrate interface and within the adhesive matrix, while coacervation promotes the delivery and surface spreading of the adhesive proteins. These natural design principles have been translated to synthetic systems toward the development of biomimetic adhesives with water-resist adhesion and cohesion. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in bio-inspired wet adhesives, focusing on two aspects: (1) the elucidation of the versatile molecular interactions (e.g., electrostatic interactions, metal coordination, hydrogen bonding, and cation-π/anion-π interactions) used by natural adhesives, mainly through nanomechanical characterizations; and (2) the rational designs of wet adhesives based on these biomimetic strategies, which involve catechol-functionalized, coacervation-induced, and hydrogen bond-based approaches. The emerging applications (e.g., tissue glues, surgical implants, electrode binders) of the developed biomimetic adhesives in biomedical, energy, and environmental fields are also discussed, with future research directions proposed.

Abstract:Several frequently used conventional adhesives can satisfy different adhesion requirements and make our daily life convenient. However, the adhesives also produce harmful pollutants for our body and environment. The adhesive proteins secreted by marine mussels have excellent adhesive property under water and can firmly attach to almost all types of materials,and also have better biocompatibility,biodegradability and nontoxicity.In this paper,the progress on research of the mussel inspired polymeric adhesives was briefly reviewed, the potential applications and widespread effects were emphasised.

Abstract:Mussel-inspired chemistry, owing to its unique and versatile functions to manipulate dynamic molecular-scale interactions, has emerged as a powerful tool for the rational design and synthesis of new hydrogels. In particular, possessing a myriad of unique advantages that are otherwise impossible by conventional counterparts, mussel-inspired hydrogels have been widely explored in numerous fields such as biomedical engineering, soft electronics and actuators, and wearable sensors. Despite great excitement and vigor, a comprehensive and timely review on this emerging topic is missing. In this review, we discuss (1) the fundamental interaction mechanisms underpinning the spectacular wet adhesion in natural mussels and mussel-inspired materials; (2) the key routes to engineering hydrogels by leveraging on the interactions of mussel-inspired building blocks; (3) the emerging applications of mussel-inspired hydrogels, especially in the areas of flexible electronics and biomedical engineering; (4) the future perspectives and unsolved challenges of this multidisciplinary field. We envision that this review will provide an insightful perspective to stimulate new thinking and innovation in the development of next-generation hydrogels and beyond.

Abstract:Adhesive hydrogels are an emerging class of hydrogels that combine three-dimensional hydrated networks with adhesive properties. These properties facilitate intimate tissue-material contact in diverse biomedical applications, enhancing tissue joining, drug transport, and signal transmission. Inspired by the universal adhesiveness of mussel foot proteins, 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (DOPA) and its analogs have been extensively exploited for the fabrication of adhesive hydrogels, within which the DOPA moieties can not only serve as cross-linking mediators but also participate in various intermolecular and surface interactions to mediate wet adhesion. This mini-review highlights recent achievements in the development of mussel-inspired adhesive hydrogels, focusing on: (1) elucidating DOPA-mediated adhesion mechanisms through nanomechanical characterizations, (2) designing injectable adhesive hydrogels toward applications in drug delivery, hemostasis, and wound closure, which includes in situ gelling liquids and shear-thinning preformed hydrogels, and (3) fabricating tough adhesive hydrogels with enhanced mechanical properties for use in tissue regeneration, biosensing, and bioimaging, with typical examples of nanocomposite and double-network hydrogels. The challenges and prospects in this rapidly developing field are also discussed.

Abstract:After four and a half billion year evolution, creatures in nature possess almost perfect structures and properties, exhibiting the harmonization and unification between structure and function. Adhesive materials have a wide variety of practical applications in biomedical sciences, construction industry, and other fields. Inspired by biomaterials (such as gecko, mussel) with the special adhesive property, great effort has been devoted to fabricating bio-inspired adhesive materials. According to the adhesive mechanism, adhesive materials can be classified in two categories, reversible adhesion and permanent adhesion. For the gecko, the reversible adhesion can be attributed to the cooperation of micro/nano hierarchical structures of gecko toes and van der Waal's force between solid surfaces and keratinous setae. For the mussel, the glue proteins secreted by marine mussels can bind strongly to all inorganic and organic surfaces in aqueous environments. This review summarizes the recent work in biomaterials with special adhesion and the corresponding bio-inspired adhesive materials, with a focus on the gecko and mussel. The research prospects and directions of bio-inspired adhesive materials in the future are also briefly addressed.

Abstract:Mussel can achieve remarkably robust attachment to various surfaces underwater by secreting mussel foot proteins (mfps) which are heavily decorated with 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-l-alanie (DOPA) and producing the proteinaceous byssus. Efforts have been dedicated to understanding the DOPA-mediated adhesive chemistry and the intermolecular & surface interaction mechanisms practiced by the foot proteins of mussels through nanomechanical force probing techniques and surface analytical tools. Based on these interaction mechanisms, mussel-inspired functional materials have been developed with a broad range of applications in engineering, biomedical and environmental fields.

Abstract:Water molecules pose a significant obstacle to conventional adhesive materials. Nevertheless, some marine organisms can secrete bioadhesives with remarkable adhesion properties. For instance, mussels resist sea waves using byssal threads, sandcastle worms secrete sandcastle glue to construct shelters, and barnacles adhere to various surfaces using their barnacle cement. This work initially elucidates the process of underwater adhesion and the microstructure of bioadhesives in these three exemplary marine organisms. The formation of bioadhesive microstructures is intimately related to the aquatic environment. Subsequently, the adhesion mechanisms employed by mussel byssal threads, sandcastle glue, and barnacle cement are demonstrated at the molecular level. The comprehension of adhesion mechanisms has promoted various biomimetic adhesive systems: DOPA-based biomimetic adhesives inspired by the chemical composition of mussel byssal proteins; polyelectrolyte hydrogels enlightened by sandcastle glue and phase transitions; and novel biomimetic adhesives derived from the multiple interactions and nanofiber-like structures within barnacle cement. Underwater biomimetic adhesion continues to encounter multifaceted challenges despite notable advancements. Hence, this work examines the current challenges confronting underwater biomimetic adhesion in the last part, which provides novel perspectives and directions for future research.

Abstract:When it comes to bonding in an aqueous environment, intertidal marine organisms such as mussels, sandcastle worms, barnacles and polychaetes are providing inspiration for the assembly of synthetic molecules into the polymeric adhesives. Although intense demands in various life or industrial applications and many mussel-inspired systems have been shown to develop coatings and hydrogels, exploring the mimetic mussel adhesive system through the control of composition and polymer molecular weight is demonstrated less often. In this report, we showed a simple approach to synthesize mussel-inspired adhesive, P(N-butyl acrylate-co-l-Dopa-methacrylate anhydride), which possesses characteristics of simple synthesis, easy-using, no extra-crosslinker need, and excellent adhesion behaviour on diverse substrates. Adhesion behaviour was examined using low- and high-surface-energy substrates (e.g. PTFE and steel, respectively). Furthermore, the fabricated adhesives exhibited excellent underwater adhesive behaviour for steel in various aqueous solutions, including ion ((IO4)− and Mn3+), acid and alkali solutions (pH = 4, 6.7 and 8, respectively). The outstanding fabricated adhesives take advantage of the catechol functionality and wettability of the resulting polymer. These insights should help us to design next-generation underwater adhesive systems as well as open up a number of future research designs for mussel-inspired adhesives with performance not accessed previously.

Abstract:Marine mussels are able to firmly affix on various wet surfaces by the overproduction of special mussel foot proteins (mfps). Abundant fundamental studies have been conducted to understand the molecular basis of mussel adhesion, where the catecholic amino acid, l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) has been found to play the major role. These studies continue to inspire the engineering of novel adhesives and coatings with improved underwater performances. Despite the fact that the recent advances of adhesives and coatings inspired by mussel adhesive proteins have been intensively reviewed in literature, the fundamental biochemical and biophysical studies on the origin of the strong and versatile wet adhesion have not been fully covered. In this review, we show how the force measurements at the molecular level by surface force apparatus (SFA) and single molecule atomic force microscopy (AFM) can be used to reveal the direct link between DOPA and the wet adhesion strength of mussel proteins. We highlight a few important technical details that are critical to the successful experimental design. We also summarize many new insights going beyond DOPA adhesion, such as the surface environment and protein sequence dependent synergistic and cooperative binding. We also provide a perspective on a few uncharted but outstanding questions for future studies. A comprehensive understanding on mussel adhesion will be beneficial to the design of novel synthetic wet adhesives for various biomedical applications.

Abstract:The impressive adhesive capacity of marine mussels has inspired various fascinating designs in biomedical fields. Mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels, as a type of promising mussel-inspired material, have attracted much attention due to their minimally invasive property and desirable functions provided by mussel-inspired components. In recent decades, various mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels have been designed and widely applied in numerous biomedical fields. The rational incorporation of mussel-inspired catechol groups endows the injectable hydrogels with the potential to exhibit many properties, including tissue adhesiveness and self-healing, antimicrobial, and antioxidant capabilities, broadening the applications of injectable hydrogels in biomedical fields. In this review, we first give a brief introduction to the adhesion mechanism of mussels and the characteristics of injectable hydrogels. Further, the typical design strategies of mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels are summarized. The methodologies for integrating catechol groups into polymers and the crosslinking methods of mussel-inspired hydrogels are discussed in this section. In addition, we systematically overview recent mussel-inspired injectable adhesive hydrogels for biomedical applications, with a focus on how the unique properties of these hydrogels benefit their applications in these fields. The challenges and perspectives of mussel-inspired injectable hydrogels are discussed in the last section. This review may provide new inspiration for the design of novel bioinspired injectable hydrogels and facilitate their application in various biomedical fields.

Abstract:<p>Achieving strong adhesion between the interfaces of similar and dissimilar materials is highly desirable in various fields. However, the adhesion of common adhesives is diminished and even eliminated upon contact with water, because it prevents direct contact between the adhesive and adherend substrate and competes with the substrate surface groups to react with the adhesive functional groups. So far, numerous mussel-inspired catechol-based wet adhesives have been reported, opening a pathway for the development of wet adhesives. However, catechol is sensitive to pH, oxidation, and temperature, which limit its adhesion capability and application convenience. To overcome these limitations, many non-catechol-based adhesives have been explored and prepared in recent years. This review systematically summarizes and discusses several types of wet adhesives starting with the most extensively investigated catechol-based wet adhesives, followed by a focus on non-catechol-based wet adhesives that adhere though hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, dynamic covalent bonding, topological entanglement, and dry polymer crosslinking, as well as by mimicking adhesion in organisms. Finally, wet adhesives that can debond on demand are discussed. This review describes the opportunities and challenges encountered in the design and development of wet adhesives with more advanced adhesion performances and application prospects.</p>
