Abstract:The development of water electrolyzer is challenging as we approach theoretical limits arising from electrochemical reactions and micro-scale bubble dynamics. In this research, two-phase flow and bubble dynamics are in-situ studied in a special designed single-channel electrolyzer. The devices fabricated by a 3D printer provide a whole vision of the electrochemical reaction within the channel. In-situ observations of channel-scale hydrogen and oxygen micro-bubbles dynamics are conducted, and the whole process of hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) are simultaneously studied. The results indicate that all bubbles generate at the interface between the proton exchange membrane and the electrode wire, and the operating conditions have a great impact on the micro bubble evolution process. The bubble detachment diameter is inversely proportional to the flow velocity, but is in direct proportion to the current density. Finally, a mathematic model has been developed, and shows a good agreement with experimental data. Those results could help to better understand the bubble evolution mechanism, in order to further understand the electrochemical reaction.
A New Contactless Impedance Sensor for Void Fraction Measurement of Gas–liquid Two-Phase Flow

Abstract:With impedance elimination principle and phase sensitive demodulation (PSD) technique, this work aims to develop a new contactless impedance sensor, which is suitable for the void fraction measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow. The impedance elimination principle is used to overcome the unfavorable influences of the coupling capacitances, i.e. the capacitive reactances of the coupling capacitances are eliminated by the inductive reactance of an introduced inductor. PSD technique is used to implement the impedance measurement. Unlike the conventional conductance/impedance sensors which use the equivalent conductance (the real part of the impedance) or the amplitude of the impedance of gas-liquid two-phase flow, the new contactless impedance sensor makes full use of the total impedance information of gas-liquid two-phase flow (including the amplitude, the real part and the imaginary part of the impedance, especially the imaginary part) to implement the void fraction measurement. As a preliminary study, to verify the effectiveness of the new contactless impedance sensor, two prototypes (with different inner diameters of 17.0 mm and 22.0 mm) are developed and experiments are carried out. Two typical flow patterns (bubble flow and stratified flow) of gas-liquid two-phase flow are investigated. The experimental results show that the new contactless impedance sensor is successful and effective. Compared with the conventional conductance/impedance sensors, the new contactless impedance sensor can avoid polarization effect and electrochemical erosion effect. The total impedance information is used and the void fraction measurement performance of the new sensor is satisfactory. The experimental results also indicate that the imaginary part of the impedance of gas-liquid two-phase flow is very useful for the void fraction measurement. Making full use of the total impedance information of gas-liquid two-phase flow can effectively improve the void fraction measurement accuracy.
A New Online Monitoring Method for Water-in-Oil Droplet Based Microfluidic Devices

Abstract:The online water-in-oil (w/o) droplet monitoring is essential for the uniformity of the droplet based microfluidic devices. In this work, a contactless impedance detection (CID) method for online w/o droplet monitoring in microfluidic devices is proposed. In the proposed method, a new CID sensor, which can work at low working frequency and overcome the unfavorable influence of coupling capacitance, is developed to obtain the impedance information of the w/o droplet. Based on the obtained impedance information, measurement models are established to realize online measurement of drop length and dispersed phase holdup. Then the coefficients of variation (CVs) of the two measured parameters are calculated to evaluate the uniformity of the droplets for online monitoring. Online monitoring experiments of w/o droplet were carried out in a microfluidic device with a 500 $\mu \text{m}\,\,\times $ 500 $\mu \text{m}$ microchannel. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed droplet monitoring method. The developed CID sensor can realize impedance measurement at a working frequency lower than 50kHz. The drop length and dispersed phase holdup are useful parameters for online monitoring of droplets. With the established measurement models, the maximum relative error of droplet length measurement is less than 10% in the droplet length range of 1.5mm-3.5mm. And the maximum error of dispersed phase holdup measurement is less than 5% in the dispersed phase holdup range of 0.20-0.67.
A New Method for Online Monitoring of Boiling Process in Mini-Channels

Abstract:A new method for online monitoring of boiling process, which is suitable for conductive fluids in mini-channels, is proposed with the introduction of contactless conductivity detection (CCD) technique and perceptron algorithm (PA) technique. Series resonance principle and simulated inductor technique were adopted to develop a new CCD sensor. PA was used to implement the boiling stage identification, i.e., to identify the current stage was which stage of the boiling process. Three prototypes of the CCD sensors with inner diameters of 1.6, 2.0, and 2.5 mm were developed. With three kinds of conductive fluids (tap water, ethanol-tap water mixture, and KCl solution), boiling experiments were carried out. The experimental results show that the CCD sensor can effectively track the bubble growth of boiling process. The research results also indicate that the proposed method is effective and the identification accuracies are greater than 90.0%. Abstract:The deactivation of the reaction surface caused by bubble covering is an important factor that causes the decrease in the efficiency of water electrolysis. By combining an electrochemical workstation with a high-speed camera, the evolutionary properties of hydrogen bubble and potential were obtained on a horizontal microelectrode with a diameter of 100 μm. During the electrolysis, individual bubbles evolved periodically on the electrode surface. Under the influence of electrode adsorption, the detachment diameter of the bubble is independent of current density, but with the increase of current density, the bubble detachment frequency increases. With the increase of ethylene glycol (EG) concentration, the bubble detachment frequency increased. When the concentration of EG is greater than 7.5 g/L, the surface tension of the solution is lower than that of water, at which time the detachment mode of the bubble changes. Separating the resistance caused by the bubbles from the total resistance, it was found that the additional resistance caused by the bubbles rapidly became smaller as the EG concentration increased until the EG concentration reached 7.5 g/L. The total resistance decreases first and then increases when the EG concentration is greater than 3 g/L.

Abstract:Improved understandings of two-phase transport in electrochemical gas-evolving systems are increasingly demanded, while high-performance imaging techniques using simplified instrumentations are not readily available. This work presents volumetric scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) imaging for quantifying the dynamics of gas bubbles and electrolyte in porous Nickel electrodes with different wettability and structures during alkaline water electrolysis (AWE). We realize high-resolution 3D imaging at 10's um level using high frequency spherically focused ultrasound. The high resolution allowed us to clearly visualize the spatial distributions of produced bubbles in the porous electrodes over time. Moreover, we are able to quantify the residual gas volume in an electrode and its coverage due to bubble evolution, which dominate its transport overpotential. Taking these advantages, we elucidate the impacts of electrodes' wettability and structures on their electrolysis performance, on a regular laboratory base. The obtained knowledge provides us important optimization guidelines of AWE designs and operating schemes.

Abstract:Gas bubble dynamics and two-phase flow have a significant impact on the performance and efficiency of proton exchange membrane electrolyzer cells (PEMECs). It has been strongly desired to develop an effective experimental method for in-situ observing the high-speed/micro-scale oxygen bubble dynamics and two-phase flow in an operating PEMEC. In this study, the micro oxygen bubble dynamic behavior and two-phase flow are in-situ visualized through a high-speed camera coupled with a specific designed transparent PEMEC, which uses a novel thin liquid/gas diffusion layer (LGDL) with straight-through pores. The effects of different operating conditions on oxygen bubble dynamics, including nucleation, growth, and detachment, and two-phase flow have been comprehensively investigated. The results show that temperature and current density have great effects on bubble growth rate and reaction sites while the influence of flow rate is very limited. The number, growth rate, nucleation site, and slug flow regime of oxygen gas bubbles increase as temperature and/or current density increases, which indicates that an increase in temperature and/or current density can enhance the oxygen production efficiency. Further, a mathematical model for the bubble growth is developed to evaluate the effects of temperature and current density on the bubble dynamics. A mathematical model has been established and shows a good correlation with the experimental results. The studies on two-phase flow and high-speed micro bubble dynamics in the microchannel will help to discover the true electrochemical reaction at micro-scale in an operating PEMEC.
Electrolyte spraying within H$_2$ bubbles during water electrolysis

Abstract:Electrolytically generated gas bubbles can significantly hamper the overall electrolysis efficiency. Therefore it is crucial to understand their dynamics in order to optimise water electrolyzer systems. Here we demonstrate a distinct transport mechanism where coalescence with microbubbles drives electrolyte droplets, resulting from the fragmentation of the Worthington jet, into the gas phase during hydrogen evolution reaction, both in normal and microgravity environments. This indicates that the H$_2$ bubble is not only composed of hydrogen gas and vapor but also includes electrolyte fractions. Reminiscent of bursting bubbles on a liquid-gas interface, this behavior results in a flow inside the bubble, which is further affected by Marangoni convection at the gas-electrolyte interface, highlighting interface mobility. In the case of electrode-attached bubbles, the sprayed droplets form electrolyte puddles at the bubble-electrode contact area, affecting the dynamics near the three-phase contact line and favoring bubble detachment from the electrode. The results of this work unravel important insights into the physicochemical aspects of electrolytic gas bubbles, integral for optimizing gas-evolving electrochemical systems. Besides, our findings are essential for studying the limits of jet formation and rupture relevant to acid mist formation in electrowinning, generation of sea spray aerosols, impact of droplets on liquid surfaces, etc.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling hydrogen bubble growth and detachment during water electrolysis is crucial for improving its efficiency. This study investigates bubble dynamics for hydrogen evolution on a platinum microelectrode in an acidic electrolyte with different gas/electrolyte surface tensions by adding varying surfactant concentrations. Three hydrogen bubble evolution patterns were observed: periodic detachment of individual bubbles at low surfactant concentrations of 0 and 1 × 10−7 M, respectively; one or two small bubbles are formed at the foot of the bubble during the evolution of single main bubble at intermediate surfactant concentrations of 1 × 10−6 and 1 × 10−5 M; and periodic detachment of large bubbles with aperiodic release of tiny bubbles at higher surfactant concentrations of 1 × 10−4 M. The concentration Marangoni force on individual H2 bubbles decreases significantly with surfactant concentration. This results in shorter evolution cycles from 138.12 to 6.98 s at −0.6 V vs the saturated calomel electrode, reduced detachment radii from 765.95 to 359.54 μm at −0.6 VSCE, and accelerated hydrogen bubble growth. This finding offers a new way to control bubble dynamics during electrochemical bubble formation.

Dynamic equilibrium of electrochemical bubbles growing on micro-electrodes

Abstract:In gas evolving electrolysis, bubbles grow at electrodes due to a diffusive influx from oversaturation generated locally in the electrolyte by the electrode reaction. When considering electrodes of micrometer-size resembling catalytic islands, bubbles are found to approach dynamic equilibrium states at which they neither grow nor shrink. Such equilibrium states are found at low oversaturation for both, pinning and expanding wetting regimes of the bubbles and are based on the balance of local influx near the bubble foot and global outflux. Unlike the stability of pinned nano-bubbles studied earlier, the Laplace pressure plays a minor role only. We extend the analytical solution of Zhang & Lohse (2023) by taking into account the non-uniform distribution of dissolved gas around the bubble obtained from direct numerical simulation. This allows us to identify the parameter regions of bubble growth, dissolution and dynamic equilibrium as well as to analyze the stability of the equilibrium states. Finally, we draw conclusions on how to possibly enhance the efficiency of electrolysis.

Abstract:This study systematically explores the impact of the anodic flow field design on the transport of O2 bubble and subsequent energy efficiency in electrolysis devices. Two distinct configurations, namely a conventional serpentine flow panel and an interdigitated flow panel, are integrated at the anode side of the electrolyzer. The interdigitated flow field exhibits superior performance in both alkaline water splitting and CO2 reduction despite the experience of an increased pressure drop. Numerical simulations reveal that the enhanced convective flow of the O2 bubbles induced by a forced anolyte flow through the porous electrode within the interdigitated panel design resulted in a 3 orders of magnitude increase in the level of the O2 bubble transport compared to the serpentine configuration. These findings not only underscore the significance of flow field design on bubble management but also provide a basis for advancing the electrolysis efficiency at industrial-level current densities.

Abstract:Water electrolysis with sustainable energy is a pivotal element in realizing a carbon-neutral future. A closely stacked assembly has been implemented in industrial applications to effectively minimize voltage loss through the electrolyte. Nevertheless, gas bubbles are vigorously and constantly formed during overall water electrolysis, particularly at high current densities. This study investigates the bubble-induced resistance in a closely stacked assembly where the interelectrode gap was minimized to mimic a practical device. At high current densities, extra ohmic resistance was found in the assembly because bubbles build up at the point where the electrodes and separators meet. The interface of the electrode and separator was observed in situ, which provided evidence for the presence of a gas bubble slug. The gas-void fraction in the assembly was evaluated using various kinds of electrolytes and electrodes.

Serological follow-up after treatment of Borrelia arthritis and acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans.

Abstract:To study the serological response to Borrelia burgdorferi after treatment of late Lyme borreliosis, consecutive serum samples from 20 patients with Borrelia arthritis and 21 with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans were analysed with capture IgM ELISA and indirect IgG ELISA, both using B. burgdorferi flagella as antigen. Seven patients had positive IgM OD values, whereas all 41 had positive IgG OD values before therapy. In the majority, highly elevated IgG OD values were seen. All patients improved after antibiotic therapy, 32 recovering completely, while 9 had sequelae. At follow-up after 6 months to 5 years, 4/7 patients became negative IgM ELISA, whereas 3 still had slightly elevated IgM OD values 6 months, 1 year and 4.5 years, respectively, after therapy. Only one patient became negative in IgG ELISA during follow-up, although a significant decline in IgG OD values was seen in 22 of the remaining 40 initially IgG-positive patients. The serological response after successful treatment of Borrelia arthritis and acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans may persist for several years even with highly elevated IgG OD values in patients who have recovered completely.
Measuring three-dimensional bubble dynamics for hydrogen production via water electrolysis

Abstract:The commercialization of mass hydrogen production via water electrolysis is presently limited by low operational current densities. The optimal performance of electrolysis cells is significantly influenced by the substantial formation and residence of bubbles at high current densities. Thus, it is crucial to design electrodes with the ability for rapid bubble discharge to ensure appropriate bubble management. However, the quantitative volumetric measurements required to determine the bubble discharge ability of an electrode are not yet sufficiently accurate. This paper describes a quantitative volumetric method that combines a stereoscopic shadowgraph imaging system with particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) to measure the three-dimensional position, size, and velocity of micrometer-sized bubbles. The proposed method successfully captures hydrogen bubbles larger than 30 μm bubbles in an alkaline water electrolyzer. Considering the different luminance patterns of small bubbles (r ≤ 4 pixels) and large bubbles (r > 4 pixels) in the current imaging system, a bubble-size adaptive detection algorithm is established based on the cascade correlation method to obtain the two-dimensional centroid coordinates and radius of the observed bubbles. The bubble size information is also introduced into a two-view PTV algorithm for retrieving the Lagrangian trajectory of each bubble. Both the bubble detection and PTV algorithms are validated using synthetic datasets. Once the bubble trajectories are resolved successfully, the three-dimensional bubble velocity is obtained, and the actual bubble sizes are further corrected using the depth information. Analysis of the trajectory and velocity components indicates the existence of lateral bubble motion, reflecting interactions among bubbles. The rise velocity is positively correlated with the bubble radius in two regions, respectively, and the deviation from the theoretical value reveals the influence of non-buoyancy factors. The proposed technique provides effective diagnostics of the three-dimensional dynamic characteristics of micrometer-sized bubbles and can be used to evaluate and design bubble management systems for various electrochemical energy conversion devices.

Abstract:To understand the relationship between electrolytic hydrogen bubble evolution and electric potential fluctuations, a synchronized measurement system, comprising a high-speed camera and an electrochemical workstation, was employed to analyze single hydrogen bubble evolution on a microelectrode and investigate the voltage–time characteristics of a typical hydrogen evolution reaction. The results show periodic potential fluctuations caused by the periodic evolution of single hydrogen bubbles. The overpotential fluctuation during single bubble evolution exhibits two stages: an initial increase (Stage I) followed by a decrease (Stage II). The duration of Stage I decreases with increasing applied current. Subsequently, a balance of known forces was developed to clarify the critical roles of the Marangoni effect and electric force in bubble detachment dynamics, enabling the prediction of bubble detachment size. Furthermore, it was observed that, during single bubble evolution, the overpotential shifts from activation dominance to ohmic dominance. The magnitude of ohmic overpotential correlates with the bubble diameter, whereas activation overpotential correlates with the bubble's contact diameter. This study contributes to the understanding of activation and ohmic overpotentials linked to bubble evolution in water electrolysis devices, thereby facilitating the development of more efficient multiphase electrochemical reactors.

Abstract:Enhancing the efficiency of water electrolysis, which can be severely impacted by the nucleation and growth of bubbles, is key in the energy transition. In this combined experimental and numerical study, in-situ bubble evolution and dissolution processes are imaged and compared to numerical simulations employing the immersed boundary method. We find that it is crucial to include solutal driven natural convection in order to represent the experimentally observed bubble behaviour even though such effects have commonly been neglected in modelling efforts so far. We reveal how the convective patterns depend on current densities and bubble spacings, leading to distinctively different bubble growth and shrinkage dynamics. Bubbles are seen to promote the convective instability if their spacing is large ($\geq4$mm for the present conditions), whereas the onset of convection is delayed if the inter-bubble distance is smaller. Our approach and our results can help devise efficient mass transfer solutions for gas evolving electrodes.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is considered as a promising and sustainable solution for energy storage and hydrogen production. The dynamic behaviors of gas bubble in microchannels have an important impact on the gas/liquid two-phase transport process during electrochemical reaction, consequently affect the performance and efficiency of PEM water electrolyzers. This paper aims to investigate and understand the phenomena of bubble detachment in microchannels during the operation of PEM water electrolyzers. The detachment process is captured in-situ/operando, and the four stages of bubble detachment are qualitatively analyzed. Three-dimensional numerical simulation is conducted to study the dynamics of bubble detachment in a Poiseuille flow of microchannel. A strategy of determine the critical flow velocity, pressure drop, and power consumption of bubble detachment in a microchannel with consideration of main forces acting on a bubble during detaching process is developed. The simulation results reveal that various factors, including the contact angle, microchannel size, and the shape and parameters of the upper wavy wall, significantly influence the behavior of bubble detachment and the associated power consumption. Based on these findings, a design strategy is proposed to enhance bubble detachment efficiency in microchannels. The suggested approach involves the implementation of a rectangular upper wavy wall with appropriate wavelength and amplitude, resulting in the lowest power consumption during the bubble detachment process. The present analysis results provide a better understanding of bubble dynamics behaviors and offer practical insights for optimizing the design of microchannels in PEM water electrolyzers.

Abstract:Bubble status monitoring is essential for designing material nanostructures and optimizing industrial processes. However, tracking the fluid dynamics of bubbles is challenging due to their random distribution and irregular dynamic changes. In this study, a tube liquid-solid triboelectric nanogenerator serves as a probe to investigate bubbles at the liquid-solid interface. The study explores the impact of bubble fluid dynamics on liquid-solid contact electrification, examining variables such as flow rates, volumes, and release intervals of bubbles. The study demonstrates that the liquid-solid triboelectric probe can work as a non-intrusive and self-powered sensor for monitoring bubble states in chemical fluid control. The sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 13.2 V center dot cm-3, a signal-bubble volume correlation coefficient of 0.9964, and a rapid response time of 0.15 s. The sensor, integrated with a wireless module, enables continuous remote detection. This work provides a valuable tool for investigating tri-phase contact electrification dynamics and presents promising technology for bubble state monitoring. Abstract:The green hydrogen economy is expected to play a crucial role in carbon neutrality, but industrial-scale water electrolysis requires improvements in efficiency, operation costs, and capital costs before broad deployment. Electrolysis operates at a high current density and involves the substantial formation of gaseous products from the electrode surfaces to the electrolyte, which may lead to additional resistance and a resulting loss of efficiency. A detailed clarification of the bubble departure phenomena against the electrode surface and the surrounding electrolytes is needed to further control bubbles in a water electrolyzer. This study clarifies how electrolyte properties affect the measured bubble detachment sizes from the comparisons with analytical expressions and dynamic simulations. Bubble behavior in various electrolyte solutions and operating conditions was described using various physical parameters. A quantitative relationship was then established to connect electrolyte properties and bubble departure diameters, which can help regulate the bubble management through electrolyte engineering.

Abstract:A cross-shaped transparent electrolysis flow cell was designed to simultaneously perform polarization experiments to about 2 A cm-2 while monitoring the current response due to bubble formation and detachment. The flow cell was designed to accommodate a large electrolyte flow and have flow conditions similar to a PEM electrolyzer. Ir foil experiments using rapid electrochemical cycling techniques were performed first as a quality control measure for cell functionality. Literature quality cyclic voltammograms were obtained, with the anodically formed iridium oxide film growth plateauing after 1000 cycles. The performance of four different Ti current collector meshes were evaluated using a commercial IrO2 CCM using 3.5 M H2SO4 at 21 ± 0.5°C. The best performing current collector mesh had the largest triple-phase boundary (TPB) length of 56 mm and a porosity of 52%. Using Fourier transform analysis, the bubble ratios for different current collector and frequency regimes were obtained. The lowest frequency bubble analysis (< 1 Hz) showed the best correlation with the performance of the different meshes.
