Abstract:Parabens have attracted extensive concerns due to their wide occurrence in wastewater and potential health risk. In this study, nitrogen vacancy engineered reticulate graphitic carbon nitride (Nv-RCN) was successfully synthesized by hot-fluid annealing synthesis followed by calcination treatment, and applied for propylparaben (PrP) photodegradation. According to the characterization results, Nv-RCN exhibited remarkable photocatalytic oxidation performance due to the special nanostructure merits and introduction of suitable nitrogen vacancy defect sites, which could enlarge specific surface area, improve light absorption ability, and boost transfer and separation efficiency of charge carriers. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance and density functional theory (DFT) further proved that the nitrogen vacancy in Nv-RCN could facilitate oxygen adsorption to form ·O2- radicals. The Nv-RCN exhibited an outstanding PrP removal efficiency of 99.25%, and the corresponding apparent rate constant was 4 times higher than that of bulk g-C3N4. Based on intermediates identification and DFT calculation, a possible PrP photodegradation pathway was proposed, which indicated that the bond between benzene ring and carboxyl group on PrP was the first and dominant site to be oxidized by decarbonylation and dealkylation. This study provided new insights to the improvement of photodegradation performance of g-C3N4 for parabens removal and related environmental remediation.
