Abstract:The Badain Jaran Desert is the third largest desert in China, covering an area of 50000 km2. It lies in Northwest China, where the arid and rainless natural environment has a great impact on the climate, environment, and human living conditions. Based on the results of 1∶250000 regional hydrogeological surveys and previous researches, this study systematically investigates the circulation characteristics and resource properties of the groundwater as well as the evolution of the climate and ecological environment since the Quaternary in the Badain Jaran Desert by means of geophysical exploration, hydrogeological drilling, hydrogeochemistry, and isotopic tracing. The results are as follows. (1) The groundwater in the Badain Jaran Desert is mainly recharged through the infiltration of local precipitation and has poor renewability. The groundwater recharge in the desert was calculated to be 1.8684×108 m3/a using the water balance method. (2) The Badain Jaran Desert has experienced four humid stages since the Quaternary, namely MIS 13-15, MIS 5, MIS 3, and the Early–Middle Holocene, but the climate in the desert has shown a trend towards aridity overall. The average annual temperature in the Badain Jaran Desert has significantly increased in the past 50 years. In detail, it has increased by about 2.5°C, with a higher rate in the south than in the north. Meanwhile, the precipitation amount has shown high spatial variability and the climate has shown a warming-drying trend in the past 50 years. (3) The lakes in the hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert continuously shrank during 1973–2015. However, the vegetation communities maintained a highly natural distribution during 2000–2016, with the vegetation cover has increased overall. Accordingly, the Badain Jaran Desert did not show any notable expansion in that period. This study deepens the understanding of groundwater circulation and the climate and ecological evolution in the Badain Jaran Desert. It will provide a scientific basis for the rational exploitation of the groundwater resources and the ecological protection and restoration in the Badain Jaran Desert.© 2021 China Geology Editorial Office.

Abstract:The Badain Jaran Desert is the second largest desert of China with a total area of 49 200 km2. At least 72 perennial lakes are scattered throughout the desert, sustaining a unique desert–lake ecosystem. Groundwater of various origins was believed to play an essential role in maintaining those desert lakes, but hydrological measurements are lacking due to difficult field conditions. This study applied the distributed temperature sensing technique to continuously measure temperature variations in one of the desert lakes – the Badain Lake – to identify groundwater discharge to the lake based on the temperature differences between groundwater and lake water. Because temperature may be influenced by various unforeseen and temporary factors, it is critical to discern those factors that may affect the temperature such as solar radiation and vertical temperature stratification and to ensure that the temperature variations of the lake water as detected by the distributed temperature sensing are mainly caused by groundwater discharge. A time window was identified during which the groundwater discharge is the dominant factor that determines the temperature pattern of the lake water. The results show that the temperature near the eastern and southeastern lakeshore of the eastern Badain Lake is colder than the average, indicating that this area is the main groundwater discharge zone. Near the northwestern lakeshore adjacent to a sand dune, a weak cold abnormal area was identified, indicating that the sand dune is another recharge source to the lake through channelling the local precipitation toward the lake. The contribution from the sand dune, however, appeared to be less than that from the regional groundwater flow. This study provides the first identification of the temperature abnormal areas, which imply groundwater discharges into desert lakes and contributes to a better understanding of the unique desert–lake ecosystem. A Characterization of the Hydrochemistry and Main Controlling Factors of Lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert, China

Abstract:Badain Jaran Desert, the coexistence of dunes and lakes, and the presence of the world’s tallest dunes, has attracted worldwide attention among hydrologists. Freshwater, brackish, and saline lakes coexistence in the Badain Jaran Desert under extremely arid environmental conditions. This raises the question of why diverse lake water types exist under the same climatic conditions. Answering this question requires the characterization of lake hydrochemistry and the main controlling factors. The purpose of the presented research was to systematically analyzed samples from 80 lakes using statistical analysis, correlation analysis and hydrogeochemical methods to investigate the hydrochemical status and evolution of lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert. The results showed that the lake water in Badain Jaran Desert is generally alkaline, with the average pH and TDS were 9.31 and 165.12 g L−1, respectively. The main cations to be Na+ and K+, whereas the main anions are Cl− and SO42−. HCO3− and CO32− decreased and SO42− and Cl− increased from southeast to northwest, whereas lake hydrochemistry changed from the SO42−-Cl−-HCO3− type to the SO42−-Cl− type and lakes transitioned from freshwater to saline. The freshwater and slightly brackish lakes are mainly distributed in the piedmont area at a high altitude near the Yabulai Moutains, whereas saline lakes are mainly distributed in the desert hinterland at a low altitude, and there is a roughly increasing trend of ions from the Yabulai Mountains. The evaporation-crystallization reactions are the dominant in the study region. Moreover, some saline mineral deposits, are extensive in these regions caused by intense evaporation-crystallization.

Features of Hydrogen and Oxygen Isotopes in Lakes and Groundwater in Southeast Badain Jaran Desert

Abstract:The Badain Jaran Desert is located in the centre of the Alxa Plateau to north of the Qilian Mountains and the Tibetan Plateau.It is the second largest desert in China with an area of 52 162 km2.Elevation in the interior of the Badain Jaran ranges from 1 500 m in the southeast to 900 m in the northwest,producing a regional hydraulic gradient from SE to NW.The unique desert environment with its lakes attracted many scientific investigations,so in this paper,by analyzing hydrogen and oxygen isotopes in the desert lakes and groundwater in the southeast of Badain Jaran Desert,connecting with totally dissolved solids（TDS） of groundwater,we discussed the recharge relationship between lakes and groundwater in the desert area,and made a further investigation on the evaporation in the Badain Jaran Desert.The hydrogen and oxygen isotope test indicated that the averaged δD and δ18O compositions had a relationship of δD=4.1δ18O-30.02‰（n=37,R2=0.94）,and the low slope of the evaporation line indicated the enhanced evaporation in the Badain Jaran Desert.The lakes had a similar evaporation trend with the groundwater in the southeast Badain Jaran Desert,and it implied that there was some degree of recharge between them.Comparison of the isotopic enrichment degrees of groundwater in the central region and the southeastern parts of the desert showed that the groundwater evaporated in the central region was more severe than in the southeast margin.Comparison of the evaporation of lagoon in the study area and in other arid regions illustrated that the lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert were affected by the effect of excessive evaporation.
Groundwater Chemistry in the Badain Jaran Desert Region of China

Abstract:The comparative chemistry of surface and subsurface waters and their geographical distribution in the Badain Jaran Desert of northwestern China, was assessed through field sampling. The chemical properties of the phreatic water fraction showed the recharge from atmospheric precipitation to be significant; however, the temporary runoff can only recharge groundwater in the desert margins. While montane bedrock fissure water plays an important role in recharging groundwater in the piedmont alluvial-diluvial layers, its contribution to that of the desert interior is very limited. Artesian water recharges shallow groundwater through the scuttles, particularly in interdune lands. Water quality ranges from 1.0-1.5 g L-1 at the top of sand mountains to 1.5-2.0 g L-1, or even above 10 g L-1 in lakes of interdune lands. Between these locations water chemistry shifts from HCO3 --SO4 2--Cl--Na+ to Cl--SO4 2--HCO3 --Na+. The more soluble Cl--Na+ accumulates in the topsoil layer, while insoluble bicarbonates accumulate in deeper layers, resulting in a vertical zonation. Strongly, slightly and very weakly salinized zones form at depths of 3-6 m, 10-12 m, and 15m, respectively. In the Bayinnuer area, the salinity of shallow (0.5-10 m) and deep (20-80 m) wells were 1.74 g L-1 and 1.39 g L-1, respectively, their water chemistries Cl--SO4 2--HCO3 - and HCO3 --SO4 2--Cl-, respectively, and their total hardness 32.9 German degrees for both. The existence of low salinity water or even freshwater beneath the shallower highly saline groundwater is significant in terms of the development and use of arid water resources in this arid region.

The results show that the pH, salinity, TDS and electrical conductivity of the lakes are greater than those of groundwater. The ion contents of the water samples are dominated by Na + and Cl-. Most of the higher salinity lakes are Na(K)-Cl-(SO4) type, and a few low-salinity lakes are Na-(Mg)-(Ca)-Cl-(SO4)-(HCO3) type. Most of the groundwater bodies are Na-(Ca)-(Mg)-Cl-(SO4)-(HCO3) type, attribute brackish lake, and only a few present a Na-Cl-SO4 type, flowing under salt water lake. The pH, salinity, TDS and electrical conductivity of the southeastern lakes are relatively low, and there are slightly alkaline lakes, while the pH value, salinity, TDS and electrical conductivity of water in the northern lakes are much greater than those of the southeastern lakes, so the northern lakes are mederately alkaline and salt water ones. In the southeastern part of the Badan Jaran Desert, the chemical characteristics of ions of the lakes water show a changing trend from south to north in the order of brackish lake→salt water lake→Salina. The changing trends of chemical compositions of ions in recent 9 years indicate that most of the ion contents have a shade of reduced in Boritaolegai, east Badain, west Badain, Nuoertu and Huhejilin Lake, which states clearly that the amount of fresh water is increasing in the 9-year period. The chemical compositions of the lake water reveal that the flow direction of lake water is from the southeast to northwest in the Badan Jaran Desert.

Abstract:The Badain Jaran Desert,the third largest sand sea in China,lies in Western Inner Mongolia from 39°20'N to 41°30'N,and 99°48'E to 104°14'E.Obviously different from other large deserts in the world,the desert is characterized by high dunes and permanent lakes within the dune field.In this study,the chemistry and isotopic compositions of groundwater and lake water samples,collected at 37 sites in the interior of the desert and its southeast margin,are analyzed.In the field,we measured water temperature,pH and TDS.Laboratory analysis included Na+,K+,Ca2+,Mg2+,Li+,NH+4,Cl-,SO2-4,NO-3,F-,H2PO-4,CO2-3,HCO-3,δ18O and δ2H.In desert lakes,pH varies between 8.5 and 11.0 while the content of total dissolved solids(TDS)varies between 1.02g/L and 398.20g/L.Based on TDS,the desert lakes can be di￣vided into three types:brackish-water lake,salty water lake and salina.Most of desert lakes belong to Na-Cl-(SO4)type of water.pH in groundwater of southeastern margin varies between 7.0 and 9.0.TDS in groundwater of southeastern margins is <12g/L.Most of groundwater samples belong to Na-(Ca)-(Mg)-Cl-(SO4)-(HCO3)type.Values of deuterium(δD)and oxygen-18(δ18O)in our study area vary over a large range,in desert lakes:1.8‰-5.9‰ for δ18O,-32.0‰--5.3‰ for δD;in desert groundwater:-3.9‰--1.7‰ for δ18O,-38.7‰--26.5‰ for δD;in groundwater of southeastern margin:-10.6‰--3.9‰ for δ18O,-91.1‰--45.1‰ for δD.By analyzing environmental isotope and ion chemistry in the desert lakes and groundwater of the Badain Jaran Desert and in its southeastern margin,we discuss the relationship between lakes and groundwater in the desert area.Referring to the salinity,the content of CO2-3 and HCO-3 and geological data,the big northern lake group is different from the southeastern lake group in the desert,because a fold belt lies inbetween.The isotopes indicate the lakes and groundwater in southeast desert have a similar evaporation trend with the groundwater in the southeast margin of the desert,whose vaporing slope is 4.21.It implies there would have some kind of contact between groundwater in the margin and lakes of southeastern desert.The isotope shows that the groundwater in the desert and Yabulai area should be phreatic water which have a high water table.Therefore,we conclude that the groundwater in the southeastern part of the desert and southern margin are mainly recharged by precipitation of local rainfall and groundwater in the adjacent south mountains.

Abstract:Four distinctive but poorly documented landforms in the Badain Jaran megadunes were studied: arcuate steps, multi-stage fans, depressions formed by runoff erosion, and groundwater overflow zones around lakes. The development of these four landform types indicates the following: (1) The hydrological balance in the sand layers of the megadune areas is positive; (2) After evaporation and transpiration, precipitation is able to infiltrate the deep sand layers; (3) Precipitation is a source for the groundwater and for many of the lakes of the area. The groundwater recharge mechanism is characterized by intense precipitation events that provide a water source, high infiltration rate, shallow evaporation depth, and low water retention. These factors together enable the precipitation to be transformed into groundwater. The energy of gravity water and the high water film pressure of adsorbed water together provide the forces necessary for effective water recharge.

The ion chemical composition, moisture content of sand layer water level height and hierarchical cluster analysis of the lake water and groundwater demonstrate that the lake water is mainly supplied by local rainfall and infiltration of precipitation in Yabulai Mountains and Heishantou Mountain, and the supply from the Qilian Mountains is almost impossible.
Groundwater Discharge Rate and Salt Fluxes of High Salinity Lakes: Insights from Δd and Δ 18 O in the Badain Jaran Desert, Northwest China

Abstract:The quantification of the amount of groundwater discharge and salt flux input into lakes is crucial for the sustainable development and utilization of regional water resources, particularly in arid areas. This study aimed to determine the δD and δ18O of ten lake basins in the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) in northwest China in April and September 2021. The δD and δ18O mass balance models were employed to estimate lake surface evaporation, groundwater discharge rates, and salt flux input. The results suggest that the distribution pattern of δD and δ18O in water bodies and the seasonal variations of groundwater and lake water levels indicate that lakes primarily receive groundwater recharge, local rainwater is not the primary recharge source for lakes and groundwater. From April to September 2021, the mean evaporation and mean groundwater discharge rates of the ten lakes traced by δD and δ18O were 1140.51 ± 174.68 mm and 7.48 ± 1.37 mm/d, respectively. Assuming that the groundwater discharge rate of 105 lakes in the BJD hinterland is similar to that of the ten lakes investigated in this study, the groundwater recharge amount and salt received by these lakes are 5.97 ± 1.09 × 107 m3/a and 3.59 ± 0.68 × 107 kg/a, respectively. The evaporation and groundwater discharge amounts determined in this study fall within the range of values reported in previous studies, suggesting that the mean values calculated using δD and δ18O are reasonable. These findings provide insights on using δD and δ18O to quantify evaporation and groundwater discharge rates in arid high salinity lakes globally.
A Preliminary Study the Spatial Distribution of Chemical Parameters of Lakes and Groundwater in Badain Jaran Desert

Abstract:In this study,71 water samples were collected from Badain Jaran Desert,which included 8 springs,12 wells and 51 lakes.The spatial distribution patterns of chemical parameters and total dissolved solids(TDS) of lakes during the past 10 years were analyzed.Result shows that total dissolved solids of lakes gradually decrease from northwest to southeast.Affected by weather conditions and local environments the hydrogeochemical type of lakes turns from Na-Cl-CO_3-(SO_4) into Na-CO_3-Cl-(SO_4).The lakes that lie in the southeast Badain Jaran Desert have low TDS and the content of SO～～2-__4 is more than CO～～2-__3 for a large recharge of fresh water resource.The TDS of groundwater are different from surface water,and there is no clear linear correlation between them.
Human Impact on Climate and Eco-Hydrological Systems in the Badain Jaran Desert in Northwest China

Abstract:The Badain Jaran Desert in northwest China has the world's largest stationary sand dunes and an impressive lake–dune system. During last decades, many lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert have disappeared and the process is still accelerating. Using remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) methods, we identified 132 lakes from satellite images taken in 1987 in the area between 101.79 – 102.58E and 39.69– 40.19N, but this number had fallen to 68 in 2006. The rapid decrease of lake numbers and concurrent shrinking of the lake area have been attributed to groundwater reductions in the drainage areas as a result of rapid socioeconomic changes, including urbanization, irrigation, and water diversion, along with an overall population increase. The area also show an exaggerated warming from 1960 to 2006, imply the arid desert area in NW China possibly response quickly and contribute a great deal to human induced global warming. The human-induced runoff water redistribution and lake disappearance in the Gobi-desert area not only impact on the climate and eco-hydrological equilibrium today, but also resulted abandon of the compacted town in the oasis in 1732 and the death of vast area of the Popular Diversifolia forest in Ejina basin.
Hydrological Cycle and Water Balance Estimates for the Megadune–lake Region of the Badain Jaran Desert, China

Abstract:The hydrology and water balance of megadunes and lakes have been investigated in the Badain Jaran Desert of China. Field observations and analyses of sand layer water content, field capacity, secondary salt content, and grain size reveal 3 types of important natural phenomenon: (a) vegetation bands on the leeward slope of the megadunes reflect the hydrological regime within the sandy vadose zone; (b) seepage, wet sand deposits, and secondary salt deposits indicate the pattern of water movement within the sandy vadose zone; (c) zones of groundwater seeps and descending springs around the lakes reflect the influence of the local topography on the hydrological regime of the megadunes. The seepage exposed on the sloping surface of the megadunes and gravity water contained within the sand layer confirm the occurrence of preferential flow within the vadose zone of the megadunes. Alternating layers of coarse and fine sand create the conditions for the formation of preferential flows. The preferential flows promote movement of water within the sand layer water that leads to deep penetration of water within the megadunes and ultimately to the recharging of groundwater and lake water. Our results indicate that a positive water balance promotes recharge of the megadunes, which depends on the high permeability of the megadune material, the shallow depth of the surface sand layer affected by evaporation, the occurrence of rainfall events exceeding 15 mm, and the sparse vegetation cover. Water balance estimates indicate that the annual water storage of the megadunes is about 7.5 mm, accounting for only 8% of annual precipitation; however, the shallow groundwater per unit area under the megadunes receives only 3.6% of annual precipitation, but it is still able to maintain a dynamic balance of the lake water. From a water budget perspective, the annual water storage in the megadunes is sufficient to serve as a recharge source for lake water, thereby enabling the long‐term persistence of the lakes. Overall, our findings demonstrate that precipitation is a significant component of the hydrological cycle in arid deserts.

Abstract:The salt lakes in arid deserts serve as crucial ecological resources and tourist attractions. However, due to the limitations of aeolian sand cover, it is challenging to directly investigate the underground contact relationship between lake water and groundwater. In the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) of China, the fresh groundwater near salt lakes is the sole source of drinking water. Consequently, a pressing concern arises regarding how groundwater exploitation impacts the intrusion of salt water into groundwater. In this study, Lake Cherigele (CRG) was chosen as a case to investigate the characteristics and migration mechanisms of the saltwater-freshwater interface using numerical simulation methods. The results reveal that: (1) The saltwater-freshwater mixing zone exhibits a wedge-shaped morphology, with a length of 250 to 290 m and a depth ranging from 50 to 70 m within the model. (2) The hydrodynamic conductivity coefficient ( K ) of the sand layer and molecular diffusion coefficient ( D m ) in the desert are identified as the primary parameters influencing the characteristics of the interface. (3) The annual fluctuations in the current groundwater level have a limited impact on the saltwater-freshwater interface; however, excessive groundwater exploitation can lead to the intrusion of salt water into freshwater body. Abstract:<p>Saline lakes are characterized by high salinity and limited biological diversity. The nutrient cycle directly determines biological diversity. Many factors including internal loading, riverine inflows, salinity, and/or anthropogenic activities affect the nutrient cycle in saline lakes. The Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) is featured by hyper-arid climate and by mega sand dune-lake landscapes. In this study, nutrients in groundwater and lake water in the BJD were analyzed to explore the control factors on the nutrient cycle. Results show that 76% of the lakes are nitrogen-limited and the rests are phosphorus-limited, 56% of lakeside groundwater samples are phosphorus-limited and the rests nitrogen-limited, and most of the well water in the mountain area surrounding the BJD is phosphorus-limited. The lake water in the BJD is mainly supported by mountain block recharge and local groundwater, but nutrients in lake water are mainly supplied by the mountain block recharge and lakebed diffusion. Lakebed diffusion delivers up to 70% total ammonium and 97.6% total orthophosphate to the lake water, while mountain block recharge accounts for about 72% nitrate/nitrite and about 73% silicate to the lake water. Nutrients in local groundwater systems are highly variable due to the complexity of hydrological and hydrogeochemical conditions (rainfall, precipitation/dissolution, and redox reaction). This study systematically investigates the control factors on the nutrient structure and cycle in groundwater and lake water in the BJD. The findings of this study will be constructive to explore the nutrient cycle in saline lakes worldwide with similar hydrogeological conditions.</p>

Abstract:Deserts are distributed in arid areas, and groundwater is the primary source of drinking water and agricultural irrigation for the residents. However, owing to an insufficient understanding of desert groundwater sources, water management policies in arid areas often fail to meet actual water demands. The Badain Jaran Desert is a typical desert with abundant groundwater. However, local economic development has been severely limited due to water resource shortages. To address this challenge, in this study, an integrated approach was utilized to perform a groundwater exploration of the study area. Evidence from delta H-2 and delta O-18 and tracer logging tests in different interdune basins suggests that the desert's groundwater originates from the Qilian Mountains through rapid cross-basin flow and then upwells from hidden volcanic craters in the desert. The deep channels likely comprise contraction joints formed by cooling of the overlying rocks during magmatic diagenesis. Several deserts worldwide receive external recharge from plateaus or mountains rather than from "fossil" water. The initial characteristics of low Sr-87/Sr-86 values, which were less than 0.7065, changed with the retention time of groundwater in the aquifer. We conclude that desert groundwater resources have abundant recharge and can meet water demands under a reasonable development approach.
Environmental Significance of the Chemical Composition of Sediments in Groundwater‐Recharged Lakes of the Badain Jaran Desert, NW China

Abstract:For lakes in desert hinterlands that are not recharged by river runoff, sediment is input solely by wind transport; however, the mechanisms that control the spatial variations in geochemical characteristics of sediments in such lakes remain unclear. Moreover, it remains uncertain whether some element ratios can be used as proxies for environmental characteristics. In this study, 100 surface sediment samples were collected from five lakes in the hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert, NW China, and examined for their major, trace and rare earth element contents and mineral assemblages. Chemical composition and mineral components of the sediments differed significantly between lakes with different total dissolved solids (TDS). Geochemical characteristics of the lake sediments and their spatial variations are influenced by eolian sands, saline minerals, and sediment sorting. Eolian sands dominate the immobile and nonsoluble elements, whereas authigenic minerals are important in influencing variations in the mobile and soluble elements. Sediment sorting is reflected in the spatial variation of the sediment chemical composition. The positive relationship between the SiO2/Ti of sediment and lake area indicates that changes in the SiO2/Ti ratio can reveal approximate lake area. The Na2O/K2O ratio in sediments can reveal the TDS of salt lakes more effectively than can the Rb/Sr ratio. However, the key factors and mechanisms governing the chemical composition of sediments at different brine evolution stages vary among lakes with different TDS levels, which should be carefully considered when interpreting the environmental significance of the chemical composition as a proxy for paleoenviroment change.

Abstract:To elucidate the slope hydrology and their influence on the regional water balance and desert lake development, water migration and soil water conditions were studied in the megadunes of Badain Jaran Desert. Simulated rainfall of 15-60 mm with infiltration depths of similar to 0.3-0.5 m, the lateral water migration ratios of similar to 52.9 %-86.2 % and the differential distribution of tracers with depth in the flat sand lands indicate that 15 mm rainfall is the critical rainfall for effective recharge of deep soil water and that there is a shift from piston flow to preferential flow of water during infiltration. Soil micro-bedding and 4.2 % soil gravity water from locally wet surface soils and 6 mm of natural rainfall resulted in lateral migration of the tracer similar to 1.2 m and 0.4 m in the slope surface and soil respectively, indicate surface flow and lateral gravity water flow resulting from differences in hydraulic conductivity and water-holding capacity of the soil micro-bedding. Soil water storage at 0-4 m depth showed that the bottom of the slope was similar to 30 mm higher than the middle of the slope after the rainy season and similar to 9 mm higher before the rainy season; in general the post-rainy season was similar to 30-40 mm higher than the pre-rainy season. Surface flow and lateral gravity water flow in unsaturated soils increase the intensity of lateral water movement on the slope and improve the effective conversion rate of rainfall to deep soil water, especially below 15 mm. Annual recharge of deep soil water, assessed using soil water change and critical rainfall, will not be less than 8.5 mm and may even reach an upper limit of similar to 30-40 mm. The megadune slopes respond strongly to local precipitation, which is sufficient to maintain the lake, but extreme precipitation does not play a decisive role. The methods and results provided in this work can advance our understanding of the desert hydrological cycle and water resources.

Abstract:The amount and timing of aquifer recharge and the evolution of lakes and groundwater in the south-eastern Badain Jaran desert of Inner Mongolia, with high megadunes, has been investigated using stable isotopes and hydrochemistry. Unsaturated zone moisture profiles down to 22 m have recorded recharge over 1185 years. Small but finite amounts of recharge are recorded with mean recharge rates of 0.95-1.33 mm year −1 , determined using a chloride mass balance technique. The unsaturated profile also acts as a unique archive of hydrological and climate change. Before 1300, it was relatively dry but distinct wet periods may be recognised during 1340-1450, 1500-1610 and 1710-1820. Since the mid 1800s, the climate shows a trend towards greater aridity. The interdune lakes are generally fresh but locally, hypersaline lakes are found in juxtaposition. This implies that in general, the lakes have low residence times and flow back into the dune system, but sedimentary obstruction locally prevents outflow and extreme evaporation occurs. The stable isotope records show that the lakes are fed by palaeowaters which on the basis of other proxy data must predate the Last Glacial Maximum. Their recharge source is problematic but most likely this derives from a diminishing water table extending some 30 m south to the Yabulai Mountains.

Abstract:The Badain Jaran Desert, located in western Inner Mongolia, China, is characterized by an arid climate and by occurrence of large dunes and permanent lakes within the dune field. The main objective of this paper is to describe landscape evolution and climatic change in this desert since the late Pleistocene. Special attention is given to the dune and lake deposits as well as to the water chemistry of the lakes. On the megadunes of the desert several calcareous cementation layers and cemented plant roots were observed, indicating a relatively moister climate during the last 31,000 years. The present hypersaline lakes were filled with fresh or brackish water between 9 and 4ka BP. On the basis of dune morphology and stratigraphy and lacustrine deposits, it is concluded that the enrichment of ions in the lakes and decline of their water surface result from aridification since the middle Holocene. The existence of more humid periods implies that the intensity of westerlies and Asian monsoons has changed periodically in this desert since the late Pleistocene.
