Abstract:The Global Settlement, along with related regulations in the early 2000s, prohibits the use of investment banking revenue to fund equity research and compensate equity analysts. We find that all-star analysts from investment banks are more likely to exit the profession or move to the buy side after the regulations. The departed star analysts’ earnings revisions and stock recommendations are more informative than those of the remaining analysts who followed the same companies. To the extent that star analysts are superior to their nonstar counterparts in terms of research ability and ability to inform the market, the exit of star analysts represents a brain drain in the sell-side equity research industry. These results are consistent with the view that the regulations introduced to protect equity investors have unintended adverse effects on the investors due to a brain drain in investment banks. Abstract:Reforms on analyst conflicts of interest prohibit the use of investment banking revenue to fund equity research and compensate equity analysts. Abstract:This study examines the effects of the Global Settlement on the departures of star analysts from investment banks. The Global Settlement prohibits the use of investment banking revenue to fund equity research and compensate equity analysts. After the Global Settlement, we find that star analysts from investment banks are more likely to exit the profession than before. We further document a significant increase in the number of star analysts who moved to the buy side. Finally, we show that the departed star analysts are relatively less biased and more accurate than the remaining analysts who followed the same companies as the departed stars. Moreover, the market reacts more to the earnings forecast revisions and stock recommendations issued by the departed stars. Taken together, these results are consistent with the Global Settlement causing a brain drain in investment banks and having an adverse effect on the information environment of the companies covered by the departed star analysts.

Abstract:Asian and Pacific Migration Journal, Ahead of Print. This article examines the effects of brain drain caused by the migration of knowledge workers from India to the United States of America (USA) during the pre- and post-global financial crisis periods, 2005–2007 and 2011–2013. Data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series for the year 2018 are used to compare the different population groups in the USA and to estimate the hourly wages of Indian and White workers using Mincer regression and Oaxaca decomposition. Following Khadria's (2001–2010) analytical propositions, three premium characteristics of Indian-origin workers to the USA consisting of: (1) an age-premium, (2) a wage-premium and (3) a vintage-premium are empirically examined. The findings uphold the theoretical construct and suggest that the migration of Indian knowledge workers to the USA results in brain drain to India and brain gain for the USA.

Abstract:I propose a novel measure of firms that hire in the same talent pool analyzing employees’ internet co-search patterns on two major online labor markets: Glassdoor and LinkedIn. I classify co-searched firms as labor market peer firms (LMPs). LMPs (1) overlap but differ from standard product-market-based industry groupings; (2) exhibit significant incremental power to explain stock return and earning comovements; (3) outperform standard industry groupings to explain return comovements when LMPs share more labor market skills. Firms that are central in the LMP network pay higher salaries. My results highlight the potential of using the wisdom of employees extracted from the internet to measure fundamental linkages that are difficult to identify by standard industry measures. Abstract:This paper is the first to use a unique dataset extracted from a popular social trading platform in China to investigate whether social learning on average encourages riskier trading and hurt stock portfolio returns. We observe an increasing trading frequency and a preference for high-volatility stocks for signal followers on average in the network over time. Furthermore, we find leading trades perform relatively better than lagging ones, indicating social learning in a social trading network is not positively associated with portfolio performance. Taken together, our empirical results are in support of Han et al. (2018).

Abstract:This paper provides one of the few evidence about migration responses among talents to air pollution. Specifically, we investigate the impact of PM2.5 concentration on job location decisions of Chinese college graduates at the beginning of their professional careers. The results indicate that a 10-unit increase in PM2.5 concentration raises college graduates' probability to leave their current city by 10% point. We also find larger impacts on graduates from elite colleges and less polluted hometowns. Our empirical results are consistent with a simple model in which the location choice of college graduates depends on their wage payment and air pollution. Our findings supplement existent literature in documenting important ways in which air pollution may associate with the loss of highly-educated talents.

Abstract:This paper examines the effects of both permanent and temporary emigration on human capital formation and economic growth of the source regions. To achieve this end, this paper explores the Chinese provincial panel data from 1980 to 2005. First, the fixed effects model is employed to estimate the effect of emigration on school enrollment rates in the source regions. Relative to this aspect, we find that the magnitude (scale) of permanent emigrants (measured by the permanent emigration ratio) is conducive to the improvement of both middle and high schools enrollments. In contrast, the magnitude of temporary emigrants has a significantly positive effect on middle school enrollment but does not have a significant effect on high school enrollment. More interestingly, different educational attainments of temporary emigrants have different effects on school enrollment. Specifically, the share of temporary emigrants with high school education positively affects middle school enrollment, while the share of temporary emigrants with middle school education negatively affects high school enrollment. Second, the instrumental variable method is applied to estimate the effect of emigration on economic growth within the framework of system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). The estimation results suggest that both permanent and temporary emigrations have a detrimental effect on the economic growth of the source regions. Our empirical tests provide some new evidence to the brain drain debate, which has recently received increasing attention.
The Brain Gain of Corporate Boards: A Natural Experiment from China

Abstract:We study the impact of directors with foreign experience on firms in emerging markets. To establish causality, we use a unique dataset from China and exploit that at different times, Chinese provinces introduced policies to attract highly talented emigrants. These policies led to an exogenous increase in the supply of Chinese individuals with foreign experience in the local labor market and ultimately increased the likelihood that firms in these provinces had directors with foreign experience in comparison to firms with a similarly high demand for these skills elsewhere. We document that hiring directors with foreign experience results in higher firm valuation, productivity, and profitability. Furthermore, corporate governance improves and firms are more likely to make international acquisitions, to export, and to raise funds internationally. These results indicate that the transfer of knowledge to emerging markets occurs not only through foreign investment, but also through labor flows and, in particular, return migration.

Abstract:Because high-status employees make disproportional contributions to firms, prior literature suggests that their departure would undermine various organizational outcomes. Building on recent literature, however, we suspect that a high-status employee may have seized disproportional resources and credits from coworkers, thereby restricting them from performing, particularly when the work context is more independent and contested. As a result, the departure of a high-status employee may bring staying coworkers more resources and incentives to perform, causing their performance to improve. To test this possibility, we examine the effect of high-status analysts' departure on the individual performance of analysts who remain, using a sample of sell-side analysts in Chinese financial brokerage firms. Employing a before-and-after treatment research design, we find evidence that after the departure of a high-status analyst, the staying coworkers' individual performance is significantly improved. It is particularly so when they share greater industry overlap with the departing analyst. Our extensional analyses also investigate additional contingencies, which helps provide valuable hints about possible mechanisms.

Abstract:We use Chinese brokerage account records to study whether market selection eliminates unskilled investors. It does not. Most months, the average cumulative returns since commencing trading of the investors who exit the market exceed those of the investors who stay. The relation between exit and cumulative returns is an inverted V with a peak at zero. Most investors experience negative cumulative returns, placing them in the positively-sloped region of the inverted V, which explains the failure of market selection. The relation between exit and cumulative returns is consistent with a disposition effect operating over investors’ entire trading histories.

Using a unique data set from China, we exploit the introduction of policies to attract talented emigrants and increase the supply of individuals with foreign experience in different provinces at different times. We document that performance increases after firms hire directors with foreign experience and identify the channels through which the emigration of talent may lead to a brain gain. Our findings provide evidence on how directors transmit knowledge about management practices and corporate governance to firms in emerging markets.

Abstract:This paper examines various factors affecting Chinese financial analysts' information comprehension, analyzing ability and job quality. We hypothesized that financial analysts with better educational background, more experience, superior resources provided by large brokerage firms and more information sources have better information comprehension, stronger analyzing ability, and higher job quality. Using a survey method to collect data, we found that information sources have a significant impact on analysts' information comprehension, analyzing ability and job quality. Specifically, analysts tend to exhibit greater information comprehension and better job quality when they conduct more company-level surveys. Additionally, when they have more access to firms' indirect information, analysts tend to have a stronger analyzing ability and better job quality. We also found that analysts' educational background has a positive impact on their analyzing ability while analysts' work experience improves their job quality. This study's results indicate that financial analysts are still a fledgling profession in current China, and the capabilities of Chinese financial analysts need to be improved through additional training and continued education. Moreover, our study is important in highlighting the urgency of fostering the development of the financial analysis profession in China.
Is There a Brain Drain in Auditing? the Determinants and Consequences of Auditors' Leaving Public Accounting

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis study investigates why auditors leave public accounting and the consequences of auditor departures, both of which have been of great concern for audit firms and regulators worldwide. Using data from China and controlling for demographics, we find that audit partners and managers, auditors who generate more revenue, and auditors who provide higher audit quality have a lower likelihood of departure, while non–Big 4 auditors have a higher likelihood of departing public accounting. We also find that an audit firm is likely to lose clients when an auditor departs. Clients who stay with the same firm pay lower audit fees but with no drop‐off in audit quality after a signing auditor departs. In supplementary analyses, we also demonstrate that the determinants and consequences of auditor departures are different for auditors who leave the firm but not the profession (i.e., auditor turnover). Specifically, high audit quality is associated with a lower likelihood of auditor departure, but it increases auditor turnover. We also observe that audit quality is reduced for the clients who stay with an audit firm after highly skilled auditors depart for high‐visibility corporate positions. Our study provides insights that should be of interest to the audit profession, audit firms, and regulators.
Chinese international business graduates: A career dilemma: Repatriate or stay?

Abstract:Abstract This paper examines the mobility paths taken by Chinese coursework graduates who studied abroad chiefly in business (Chinese ‘foreign’ graduates) and the consequences for their careers. A model is developed that focuses on the two major interconnected paths of repatriating and remaining abroad, and looks at the influence of pull–push forces. The model suggests the career consequences for repatriates, and their reactions to re-entry to China, in contrast to the career consequences for stayers and their reactions to the host country. The career capital the business graduates acquired while studying is developed. Adverse career consequences and reactions may lead to further mobility, including re-expatriation abroad by repatriates and repatriation by stayers. Overall, Chinese foreign business graduates may be caught in a dilemma when selecting the best path for their career and lifestyle. Implications for future research and management of Chinese foreign business graduates in host countries and China are assessed.

Abstract:Following the implementation of China's new asset management regulations as an exogenous event, this paper explores the changes in corporate labor income share brought about by the financial regulation. Through a series tests, we demonstrate that financial regulation has a positive impact on China's corporate labor income share. We find the ‘de-financialization’ effect associated with China's new asset management regulations has lowered the cost of corporate financing and improved the human capital structure, which act as transmission mechanisms of our result. On the cross section, the positive impact of financial regulation on corporate labor income share is particularly pronounced for Chinese State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and firms which are led by executives with a background in finance, and firms which have excessive capital investment or weak capital-labor interchangeability. In addition, this enhancement effect is affected by the degree of firms' principal agency and the importance they place on innovative. In summary, our study shed light on how government financial policy sharps corporate behavior in emerging market country, thus expanding and supplementing the existing literature. The result is of great significance to attempt to formulate financial regulatory policy and promote common prosperity in China.
An Agent-Based Modelling Approach to Brain Drain

Abstract:The phenomenon of brain drain, that is the emigration of highly skilled people, has many undesirable effects, particularly for developing countries. In this study, an agent-based model is developed to understand the dynamics of such emigration. We hypothesise that skilled people's emigration decisions are based on several factors including the overall economic and social difference between the home and host countries, people's ability and capacity to obtain good jobs and start a life abroad, and the barriers of moving abroad. Furthermore, the social network of individuals also plays a significant role. The model is validated using qualitative and quantitative pattern matching with real-world observations. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses are performed in addition to several scenario analyses. Linear and random forest response surface models are created to provide quick predictions on the number of emigrants as well as to understand the effect sizes of individual parameters. Overall, the study provides an abstract model where brain drain dynamics can be explored. Findings from the simulation outputs show that future socioeconomic state of the country is more important than the current state, lack of barriers results in a large number of emigrants, and network effects ensue compounding effects on emigration. Upon further development and customisation, future versions can assist in the decision-making of social policymakers regarding brain drain.

Abstract:How does employer reputation affect the labor market? We investigate this question using a novel dataset combining reviews from Glassdoor.com and job applications data from Dice.com. Labor market institutions such as Glassdoor.com crowd-sources information about employers to alleviate information problems faced by workers when choosing an employer. Raw crowd-sourced employer ratings are rounded when displayed to job seekers. By exploiting the rounding threshold, we identify the causal impact of Glassdoor ratings using a regression discontinuity framework. We document the effects of such ratings on both the demand and supply sides of the labor market. We find that displayed employer reputation affects an employer's ability to attract workers, especially when the displayed rating is "sticky." Employers respond to having a rating above the rounding threshold by posting more new positions and re-activating more job postings. The effects are the strongest for private, smaller, and less established firms, suggesting that online reputation is a substitute for other types of reputation.

Abstract:<p>We study the impact of CFOs with foreign experience on analysts' forecast accuracy in emerging markets. Using a unique data set from China, we find that analysts' forecast accuracy increases when firms hire CFOs with foreign experience, confirming the brain gain effect of CFOs. Our results are robust after addressing potential endogeneity by introducing the propensity score matched (PSM) procedure and Heckman two-stage method. Channel analyses show that CFOs with foreign experience are related to decreased earnings management and a greater probability of hiring high-quality auditors, indicating that the improvement in financial reporting quality and information environment brought by returnee CFOs mainly drive our results. Further cross-section tests reveal that compared to firms with more external pressure, the positive effect of returnee CFOs on analysts' forecast accuracy is more pronounced among firms with fewer analyst coverage and belonging to less competitive industries. Returnee CFOs with foreign work experience exert a more significant impact on analysts' forecast accuracy than those with foreign study experience. Overall, we provide the first evidence on the brain gain of CFOs in terms of analyst forecasts.</p>
