Abstract:Searching for heavy fermion (HF) states in non-f-electron systems becomes an interesting issue, especially in the presence of magnetism, and can help explain the physics of complex compounds. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, physical properties measurements, and the first-principles calculations, we observe the HF state in a 3d-electron van der Waals ferromagnet, Fe3GeTe2. Upon entering the ferromagnetic state, a massive spectral weight transfer occurs, which results from the exchange splitting. Meanwhile, the Fermi surface volume and effective electron mass are both enhanced. When the temperature drops below a characteristic temperature T*, heavy electrons gradually emerge with further enhanced effective electron mass. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and HF state can be well interpreted by the dual properties (itinerant and localized) of 3d electrons. This work expands the limit of ferromagnetic HF materials from f- to d-electron systems and illustrates the positive correlation between ferromagnetism and HF state in the 3d-electron material, which is quite different from the f-electron systems.

Abstract:The van der Waals ferromagnet $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}\mathrm{GeT}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}$ has attracted great research attention recently due to its extraordinary properties. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of bulk $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}\mathrm{GeT}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}$. We observe largely dispersive energy bands with exchange splitting that are in overall agreement with our density-functional theory calculation. Interestingly, the band dispersions barely change upon heating towards the ferromagnetic transition near 225 K, except for the reduction of quasiparticle coherence, which strongly deviates from the itinerant Stoner model. We suggest that the local magnetic moments may play a crucial role in the ferromagnetic ordering and the electronic structure of $\mathrm{F}{\mathrm{e}}_{3}\mathrm{GeT}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}$, which will shed light on the generic understanding of itinerant magnetism in correlated materials.

Abstract:Heavy Fermion (HF) states emerge in correlated quantum materials due to the intriguing interplay between localized magnetic moments and itinerant electrons but rarely appear in 3d-electron systems due to high itinerancy of d-electrons. Here, an anomalous enhancement of Kondo screening is observed at the Kondo hole of local Fe vacancies in Fe3GeTe2 which is a recently discovered 3d-HF system featuring Kondo lattice and two-dimensional itinerant ferromagnetism. An itinerant Kondo–Ising model is established to reproduce the experimental results and provides insight into the competition between Ising ferromagnetism and Kondo screening. Abstract:The competition between magnetic order and Kondo effect is essential for the rich physics of heavy fermion systems. Nevertheless, how such competition is manifested in the quasiparticle bands in a real periodic lattice remains elusive in spectroscopic experiments. Here we report a high-resolution photoemission study of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice system CeCoGe3 with a high TN1 of 21K. Our measurements reveal a weakly dispersive 4f band at the Fermi level near the Z point, arisingfrom moderate Kondo effect. The intensity of this heavy 4f band exhibits a logarithmic increase with lowering temperature and begins to deviate from this Kondo-like behavior below 25 K, just above TN1, and eventually ceases to grow below 12 K. Our work provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the competition between magnetic order and the Kondo effect in a Kondo lattice system with local-moment antiferromagnetism, indicating a distinct scenario for the microscopic coexistence and competition of these phenomena, which might be related to the real-space modulation.

Abstract:The van der Waals ferromagnet Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ has recently attracted extensive research attention due to its intertwined magnetic, electronic and topological properties. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of bulk Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. We observe largely dispersive energy bands that are narrowed by a factor of 1.6 compared with ab-initio calculation. Upon heating towards the ferromagnetic transition near 225 K, we observe a massive reduction of quasiparticle coherence in a large energy range, which is attributed to the enhanced magnetic fluctuation in the system. Remarkably, the electron bands barely shift with increasing temperature, which deviates from the exchange splitting picture within the itinerant Stoner model. We argue that the local magnetic moments play a crucial role in the ferromagnetism of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, despite its strongly itinerant nature. Our results provide important insights into the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ and shed light on the generic understanding of itinerant magnetism in correlated materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have sparked widespread attention due to their potential in spintronic applications as well as in fundamental physics. Ferromagnetic vdW compound Fe 3 GeTe 2 (FGT) and its Ga variants have garnered significant interest due to their itinerant magnetism, correlated states, and high magnetic transition temperature. Experimental studies have demonstrated the tunability of FGT's Curie temperature, T C , through adjustments in quintuple layer numbers (QL) and carrier concentrations, n . However, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. In this study, we employ molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) to synthesize 2D FGT films down to 1 QL with precise layer control, facilitating an exploration of the band structure and the evolution of itinerant carrier density. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals significant band structure changes at the ultra-thin limit, while first-principles calculations elucidate the band evolution from 1 QL to bulk, largely governed by interlayer coupling. Additionally, we find that n is intrinsically linked to the number of QL and temperature, with a critical value triggering the magnetic phase transition. Our findings underscore the pivotal role of band structure and itinerant electrons in governing magnetic phase transitions in such 2D vdW magnetic materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferromagnets have potential applications as next-generation spintronic devices and provide a platform to explore the fundamental physics behind 2D magnetism. The dual nature (localized and itinerant) of electrons adds further complexity to the understanding of correlated magnetic materials. Here, we present the temperature evolution of electronic structure in 2D van der Waals ferromagnet, Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$, using photoemission spectroscopy in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) plus dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). With the appearance of quasiparticle peak and its evolution in the vicinity of Fermi energy, we unveil empirical evidences of incoherent-coherent crossover at around 125 K. DFT+DMFT results show that the quasiparticle lifetime surpasses thermal energy for temperature below 150 K, confirming incoherent-coherent crossover in the system. No appreciable change in the Fe 2$p$ core level, overall valence band spectra across the magnetic transition, and temperature dependent ferromagnetic DFT+DMFT results, provide substantial evidence for non-stoner magnetism in Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. We elucidate the temperature dependent intimate relation between magnetism and electronic structure in Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. Sommerfeld coefficient of $\sim$ 104 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ obtained in the low temperature limit from DFT+DMFT calculations resolve the long standing issue of large Sommerfeld coefficient ($\sim$ 110 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$) obtained from specific heat measurements.

Abstract:Fe3GeTe2 has emerged as one of the most fascinating van der Waals crystals due to its two-dimensional (2D) itinerant ferromagnetism, topological nodal lines and Kondo lattice behavior. However, lattice dynamics, chirality of phonons and spin-phonon coupling in this material, which set the foundation for these exotic phenomena, have remained unexplored. Here we report the first experimental investigation of the phonons and mutual interactions between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in few-layer Fe3GeTe2. Our results elucidate three prominent Raman modes at room temperature: two A1g({\Gamma}) and one E2g({\Gamma}) phonons. The doubly degenerate E2g({\Gamma}) mode reverses the helicity of incident photon, indicating the pseudo-angular momentum and chirality. Through analysis of temperature-dependent phonon energies and lifetimes, which strongly diverge from the anharmonic model below Curie temperature, we determine the spin-phonon coupling in Fe3GeTe2. Such interaction between lattice oscillations and spin significantly enhances the Raman susceptibility, allowing us to observe two additional Raman modes at the cryogenic temperature range. In addition, we reveal laser radiation induced degradation of Fe3GeTe2 in ambient conditions and the corresponding Raman fingerprint. Our results provide the first experimental analysis of phonons in this novel 2D itinerant ferromagnet and their applicability for further fundamental studies and application development.

Abstract:The interplay of symmetry-breaking ordered states, such as superconductivity, charge density waves, magnetism, and pseudogaps, is a fundamental issue in correlated systems. Periodic modulation and antiferromagnetism often coexist in the proximity of phase diagram region in high-Tc superconductors. It is also worth noting that different order states appear in a situation on comparable temperature scales, so these orders are intertwined and competing on the same footing. The magnetism of vdW material Fe5−xGeTe2, with one of the highest reported bulk Curie temperatures, is found to be sensitive to thermal history and external magnetic field. However, the temperature-dependent magnetization with two characteristic points still lacks a unified picture to describe it. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, magnetic property measurements, and first-principles calculations, the complex yet intriguing magnetic behaviors are gradually unveiled. A competition mechanism between charge order and ferromagnetism is proposed and firmly observed by experimental measurements. As the ferromagnetic order strengthens at low temperature, the charge order will be suppressed. Exchange splitting in itinerant ferromagnetism plays a significant role in the temperature evolution of band structure and causes a Lifshitz transition, which provides more control means to realize novel devices at room temperature.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have recently attracted increasing attention, as they provide a novel system for exploring 2D magnetism. However, intrinsic ferromagnetism in 2D systems has almost exclusively been observed at low temperatures, limiting their technological relevance. FeNGeTe2 (N=3, 4, and 5) systems are currently becoming the most attractive 2D vdW materials due to their relatively high Curie temperatures and large saturation magnetization. However, the nature of their complex yet intriguing magnetic behaviors is still unclear, in part due to the multiple inequivalent iron sites and iron vacancies. Here, we show evolution of magnetic ordering transitions in Fe5−xGeTe2 with high Curie temperature and a strong saturation magnetization using photoemission electron microscopy and transport measurements. At 275 K, the ferromagnet transitions to a ferrimagnet, and below 110 K transitions to a state with glassy clusters. These are evidenced from temperature-dependent magnetic stripe domain evolution and anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements. Our findings show a clear magnetic ground state of Fe5−xGeTe2 at room temperature which signals that Fe5−xGeTe2 system is a very promising candidate for spintronic devices and provides a material design pathway to further increase the Curie temperature and saturation moments in vdW ferromagnets.

Abstract:In heavy-fermion systems with f electrons, there is an intricate interplay between Kondo screening and magnetic correlations, which can give rise to various exotic phases. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering, we investigate the temperature evolution of the low-energy spin waves in a metallic van der Waals ferromagnet Fe_3-xGeTe_2 (Curie temperature T_ C∼160 K), where the Kondo-lattice behavior emerges in the ferromagnetic phase below a characteristic temperature T^*∼90 K. We observe that the magnon damping constant diverges at both low and high temperatures, exhibiting a minimum coincidentally around T^*. Such an observation is analogous to the resistivity minimum as due to the single-impurity Kondo effect. This unusual behavior is described by a formula that combines logarithmic and power terms, representing the dominant contributions from Kondo screening and thermal fluctuations, respectively. Furthermore, we find that the magnon damping increases with momentum below T_ C. These findings can be explained by considering spin-flip electron-magnon scattering, which serves as a magnonic analog of the Kondo-impurity scattering, and thus provides a measure of the Kondo coupling through magnons. Our results provide critical insights into how Kondo coupling manifests itself in a system with magnetic ordering and shed light on the coexistence of and interplay between magnetic order and Kondo effect in itinerant 3d-electron systems.
Observation of Complete Orbital Two-channel Kondo Effect in van der Waals Ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2

Abstract:Orbital two-channel Kondo (2CK) effect is one of the crucial systems with non- Fermi liquid (NFL) behaviors. But the full three-regime transport evidence has never been observed in one sample. Here, all three-resistive regimes for the orbital 2CK effect induced by two-level systems (TLSs) have been observed in the van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2. The electron behavior undergoes a continuous transition from electron scattering to the NFL behavior, and subsequently to Fermi liquid behavior. The magnetic field does not affect any regimes, indicating the non-magnetic origin of the TLSs in Fe3GaTe2. In addition, the slope of linear negative magnetoresistance, rather than the topological Hall effect, has been found to be related to spin-magnon scattering and can be used to infer the emergence of spin textures. Our findings indicate Fe3GaTe2 may be an ideal platform to study electron-correlation and topological phenomena.

Abstract:The emerging two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials present atomic layer thickness and a perfect interface feature, which have become an attractive research direction in the field of spintronics for low power and deep nanoscale integration. However, it has been proven to be extremely challenging to achieve a room-temperature ferromagnetic candidate with well controlled dimensionality, large-scale production, and convenient heterogeneous integration. Here, we report the growth of wafer-scale two-dimensional Fe3GeTe2 integrated with a topological insulator of Bi2Te3 by molecular beam epitaxy, which shows a Curie temperature (Tc) up to 400 K with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Dimensionality-dependent magnetic and magnetotransport measurements find that Tc increases with decreasing Fe3GeTe2 thickness in the heterostructures, indicating an interfacial engineering effect from Bi2Te3. The theoretical calculation further proves that the interfacial exchange coupling could significantly enhance the intralayer spin interaction in Fe3GeTe2, hence giving rise to a higher Tc. Abstract:Developing a comprehensive magnetic theory of correlated itinerant magnets is a challenging task due to the difficulty in reconciling both local moments and itinerant electrons. In this work, we investigate the microscopic process of magnetic phase transition in ferromagnet metal Fe$_{3-\delta}$GeTe$_2$. A new paradigm is proposed to describe the magnetic phase transition in correlated metallic ferromagnets, where Hund's coupling dominates the spectral weight transfer between different spin channels, rather than spin-splitting as described by the Stoner model. We recognize that our theory should be universal for itinerant magnets. Additionally, we reveal an efficient way to achieve novel quantum states from various competing orders in multi-site crystal structures. Our research shows that Fe1 are proximate to Mott physics, while Fe2 exhibit Hund physics due to their distinct atomic environments. These competing orders work together to produce heavy fermion behavior within ferromagnetic long-range order through well-defined quasiparticle bands, which are promoted by Hund's coupling and further hybridized with relative itinerant bands. The complex interactions of competing orders drive correlated magnetic metal to a new frontier for discovering outstanding quantum states and exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics.

Abstract:Abstract Finding d -electron heavy fermion states has been an important topic as the diversity in d -electron materials can lead to many exotic Kondo effect-related phenomena or new states of matter such as correlation-driven topological Kondo insulator. Yet, obtaining direct spectroscopic evidence for a d-electron heavy fermion system has been elusive to date. Here, we report the observation of Kondo lattice behavior in an antiferromagnetic metal, FeTe, via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy and transport property measurements. The Kondo lattice behavior is represented by the emergence of a sharp quasiparticle and Fano-type tunneling spectra at low temperatures. The transport property measurements confirm the low-temperature Fermi liquid behavior and reveal successive coherent-incoherent crossover upon increasing temperature. We interpret the Kondo lattice behavior as a result of hybridization between localized Fe 3d xy and itinerant Te 5p z orbitals. Our observations strongly suggest unusual cooperation between Kondo lattice behavior and long-range magnetic order.

Abstract:Realization of ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals opens up a vital route to understand the magnetic ordering in the 2D limit and to design novel spintronics. Here, we report enriched layer-number-dependent magnetotransport properties in the vdW ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2. By studying the magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in nanoflakes with thicknesses down to monolayer, we demonstrate that while the bulk crystals exhibit soft ferromagnetism with an in-plane magnetic anisotropy, hard ferromagnetism develops upon thinning, and a perpendicular easy-axis anisotropy is realized in bilayer flakes, which is accompanied by a pronounced enhancement of AHE because of extrinsic mechanisms. For the monolayer flakes, the hard ferromagnetism is replaced by spin-glass-like behavior, in accordance with the localization effect in the 2D limit. Our results highlight the thickness-based tunability of the magnetotransport properties in the atomically thin vdW magnets that promises engineering of high-performance spintronic devices.

Abstract:Non-trivial spin textures driven by strong exchange interaction, magneto-crystalline anisotropy, and electron correlation in a low-dimensional magnetic material often lead to unusual electronic transitions. Through a combination of transport experiments in exfoliated nanoflakes down to 16 layers and first principle calculations, we unravel emergent electronic phases in quasi-2D van der Waals ferromagnet, Fe 4 GeTe 2 , possessing ferromagnetic T C ‚ÄČ~‚ÄČ270‚ÄČK, along with a spin-reorientation transition ( T SR ‚ÄČ~‚ÄČ120‚ÄČK) with the change of magnetic easy axis. Two electronic transitions are identified. The first transition near T SR exhibits a sharp fall in resistivity, followed by a sign change in the ordinary Hall coefficient ( R 0 ), together with, maximum negative magnetoresistance (MR) and anomalous Hall conductivity. Another unusual electronic transition, hitherto unknown, is observed near ~ 40‚Äď50‚ÄČK ( T Q ), where R 0 again changes sign and below which, the resistivity shows a quadratic temperature dependence, and MR becomes positive. An analysis of the experimental data further uncovers the role of competing inelastic scattering processes in anomalous magnetotransport behavior. The density-functional theory based first-principle calculations unveil two possible magnetic phases, followed by a low-energy model Hamiltonian which captures the essence of these phases as well as explains the observed magnetotransport behavior. Thus, we demonstrate an interplay between magnetism and band topology and its consequence on electron transport in Fe 4 GeTe 2 , important for spintronic applications.

Abstract:As a van der Waals ferromagnet with high Curie temperature, Fe5-xGeTe2 has attracted tremendous interests recently. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we systematically investigated the electronic structure of Fe5-xGeTe2 crystals and its temperature evolution. Our ARPES measurement reveals two types of bandstructures from two different terminations with slight k z evolution. Interestingly, across the ferromagnetic transition, we observed the merging of two split bands above the Curie temperature, suggesting the band splitting due to the exchange interaction within the itinerant Stoner model. Our results provide important insights into the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe5-xGeTe2 and the understanding of magnetism in a two-dimensional ferromagnetic system.
