Abstract:The paper explores the spatial pattern of headquarters of multinational enterprises and the influencing factors using data from Multinational Enterprises (MNE) headquarters based in Shanghai.The results show that headquarters of MNE are highly agglomerated in the central city,in the inner ring and Pudong New District,especially agglomerated near main traffic lines and national development zones.Shanghai has developed various levels of agglomerate zones centered in development zones.The headquarters are agglomerated in the central district including Lujiazui financial trade zone,Huangpu central district,Hongqiao economic development zone,Pudong New District including Zhangjiang high-tech park,Jinqiao export processing zone,and northwest of Shanghai including the automobile park.The results of influencing factors of MNE headquarters distribution show that location,institutions and agglomeration factors affect the location choice of MNE headquarters,MNEs tend to be located near good traffic conditions and better local institutions.MNE headquarters tend to be agglomerated in national development zones to reduce transaction costs.Results also show that factors such as distance to urban centers,urban development zones,and new towns do not significantly affect the location choice of headquarters.The study further analyzed the influencing factors of location of MNC headquarters based on the Tobit model.The results show that the regional transportation infrastructure,system and agglomeration factors affect the location choice of MNC headquarters.The study also shows that institutional and agglomeration factors are more important for US multinational corporate headquarters,and Japanese multinational corporate headquarters are more affected by the impact of transport infrastructure.The influence of institutional factors and agglomeration factors on MNC headquarters before 2008 is gradually strengthened and then weakened,indicating that the influence of institutional and agglomeration factors on MNC headquarters' distribution within the city is also affected by the cultural distance of the source country.With continuous improvement of the business environment,the impact of institutional and agglomeration factors on the distribution of headquarters has gradually declined.

Abstract:Associated with globalization, industrialization and informationization, a growing number of corporate headquarters separate from their manufacturing productivity and congregate in certain areas. Witnessing this trend, some Chinese scholars put forward the theory of headquarters economy. This paper summarizes the literature of headquarters economy in terms of its concept, connotation, driving forces and developing strategies, and reviews the related theories and their current studies applying to the field of headquarters economy theory. By reasoning the former researches, the paper discusses the deficiencies of Chinese theoretical studies and headquarters economy practices, in light of which some improvements are suggested.

Abstract:The spatial pattern of headquarters of large enterprises in a city is influenced by urban development and is also the driving force of the restructuring of urban form. The paper explores the distribution and influence mechanism of the headquarters of listed enterprises based on the detailed information of publicly listed enterprises and the location of their headquarters. The results show that,(1) Headquarters of listed enterprises in Shanghai displays an obvious polycentric pattern. Most headquarters are agglomerated in central urban districts.There are several clusters of headquarters, including Lujiazui and Caohejing development districts in central area and development zones in the suburbs. The scales of the headquarters clusters show a decreasing trend from the center to the periphery area.(2) The density of headquarters declines sharply with the growing distance from the city center.(3) The listed enterprise headquarters also tend to be located near the major traffic roads. More than 77% of the headquarters are located within 500 meters away from the major traffic lines.(4) The result of econometric model indicates that enterprise ownership, the year of the listing, scale and industry type of enterprises significantly affect the location of the headquarters of the large firms. The state-owned, larger and older enterprises are more inclined to locate their headquarters near the central area of the city, while the private-owned, smaller and newly listed firms generally locate their headquarters in the suburban area, resulting the dual structure of the spatial pattern of headquarters.(5) We argue that market oriented reform, government planning and political pecking order of firms of different ownership can explain such dual structure of the spatial pattern of the headquarters in Shanghai. Agglomeration economies and location advantages induce headquarters to be agglomerated in central districts. Urban planning is the driving force for many headquarters being located in development zones of the city. Finally, the political pecking order and the rapid rise of land rents in the inner city lead more privatelyowned and smaller enterprises to locate their headquarters in the suburbs, resulting in the restructure of the spatial pattern of headquarters.(6) The spatial pattern of listed enterprises also affects the urban form and may reshape the urban structure. With the surburbanization of industry and housing, more and more new headquarters are agglomerated in the new urban districts. The spread of enterprise headquarters and the benefits of headquarters economy in new urban districts will strengthen management functions in the suburbs and help to reduce the overcrowding of inner city.

Abstract:Headquarters of large firms are the commanding centers of the economy.It is of particular interests to investigate the headquarters' distribution in China,a fast growing transition economy.However,little attention has been paid to the understanding of spatial pattern of headquarters of public companies,which dominates China's economy today.Using a comprehensive dataset of Chinese public listed firms,this paper seeks to find out the spatial pattern of public companies' headquarters and its evolution over time.First,headquarters of public listed firms are mostly located in the eastern China,especially in the Yangtze River Delta,Pearl River Delta and Beijing-Tianjin region.Second,headquarters of the public companies are inclined to be proximate to political centers at different geographical scales.Beijing,as the capital of China,houses most of the headquarters of public firms,and the provincial capital city usually accommodates the largest number of headquarters within its province.Third,Beijing,Shanghai and Shenzhen are the top three cities in terms of the number of public companies' headquarters as well as the scale of the firms.The three cities dominate the first three positions in almost all sectors in terms of the number of headquarters.As the capital of China,Beijing dominates and outperforms other cities.Fourth,headquarters of large firms in China are less agglomerated compared to those much developed countries and are becoming more agglomerated in the cities in coastal China.The number of headquarters in Beijing,Shanghai and Shenzhen is increasing faster compared with other smaller cities.Finally,the number of headquarters is highly correlated with the development of financial industry,airport volume,economic output,globalization,total population,and political level of the city

Abstract:Headquarters economy is an advanced and complex economic form, and not all places possess the conditions to develop this type of economy. However, few studies have been devoted to evaluating and analyzing the suitability of a given region to develop headquarters economy, theoretically or empirically. In this study, a novel concept of “suitability of headquarters economy development” (SHED) was proposed, and a corresponding theoretical model and a four-level hierarchical indicator system were established. Besides, through an integration of the projection pursuit model, Pearson correlation, Theil index, and so on, we examine the regional inequality, spatial-temporal dynamic patterns and heterogeneity of the 19 urban agglomerations (UAs) in China from 2004 to 2018. The results showed that the SHED level of China’s UAs had been increasing since 2004, with an extending trend of regional differences. The Theil index value confirmed that the differences in SHED were mainly owing to variations among the three hierarchies. In addition, the SHED of China’s UAs exhibited significant dimensional heterogeneity, spatial heterogeneity, and hierarchical heterogeneity. According to the overall performance of China’s UAs, their SHED can be divided into five grades: high-speed advancing zone, rapidly advancing zone, steadily advancing zone, preliminarily advancing zone, and initially starting zone. The SHED level of many UAs mismatch the level of central cities under their jurisdiction, which needs to be treated differently. This study enriches the existing knowledge regarding headquarters economy and provides useful policy implications for the promotion of high-quality development of UAs in China and other developing countries in the future.

Abstract:Based on a hypothesis of increasing returns of scale and non-perfect competitive market,spatial economics is concerned with the power,forms,and effects of agglomeration,and explains how spatial factors work in resource allocation.China's present domestic researches on spatial economics focus on diversified agglomeration,which consists of industry agglomeration,urban cities and urban crowding as well as integrated regions.Through a study on the spatial distribution of industry agglomeration,researchers analyze the causes of agglomeration formation,especially the roles the opening-up and local protectionism(two special factors in China) play in the said formation,and then the effects the various agglomeration forms bring about.After presenting diversities of the agglomeration's effects,they acknowledge that China's regional differences are inevitable in a certain period of time.Therefore,factor floating and market integration play a decisive role in regional coordination and growth.These conclusions provide a fresh perspective for the further development of the theory concerning China's development and reform,and a new theoretical basis for the formulation of industrial policies and regional policies,while making more space for the development of spatial economics itself.Finally,it is pointed out that the domestic main research orientation in the future will be focused on the theoretic innovation of spatial economics,the development of micro-level mechanism of agglomeration,and the relationships between agglomeration and regional development.

Abstract:Examining the role of China's sub-national regions in the country's dynamic entanglement with globalization has showed how different regions have played diverse roles both in China's economic and social transformations and in changes in the shape and nature of globalization itself. Abstract:The strategy of attracting corporate headquarters has been fairly popular among many Chinese cities.Research on the locational characteristics of corporate headquarters however is rather inadequate.Based on the related literature on corporate headquarters,this paper has made a special effort to investigate the spatial pattern and evolution of corpo- rate headquarters.It is highlighted that corporate headquarters are highly agglomerated at all spatial scales,which is mo- tivated by the cost-savings and efficiency-improvement resulted from external agglomeration economies.Corporate headquarters might relocate from one place to another due to cost,policy and personal considerations.There is also a se- quential stage of agglomeration and dispersion processes in the locations of corporate headquarters.The locational char- acteristics of corporate headquarters have important policy implications for Chinese cities.

Abstract:In this article, a comprehensive dataset of publicly listed firms in the People's Republic of China is used to examine the spatial pattern and evolution of headquarters functions. Results indicate that headquarters are highly agglomerated in metropolitan areas at the peak of the hierarchy of political power. While economic-agglomerative factors matter, the spatial pattern of headquarters in China also reflect a wide range of institutional-contextual factors-the relative dominance of state-owned firms, regulation of the public listing process, and important roles of the state in the economy. Regression analyses indicate that a city's level in the political hierarchy remains a significant factor in the geography of headquarters functions even after controlling for agglomeration-economic factors.

Abstract:<p>The spatial pattern of multinational corporations (MNC)' headquarters (HQs) plays an essential role in the organization of a world city. Triggered by strategies to decentralize non-capital function from the core area, the recent restructuring of the Beijing metropolitan is particularly concerning. By bridging the theory of paradigm of world cities and industry spatial agglomeration, this study provides an institutional perspective for estimating the spatial pattern of HQs in the context of a globalized economy and developmental states. We implement dynamic spatial analysis and Geographically Weighted Poisson Regression on a data set of HQs of different capital forms: central state-owned enterprises (CSOE), non-central state-owned enterprises (non-CSOE), private enterprises (PE), and foreign enterprises (FE). The findings are: 1) The dominant part of HQs tend to concentrate in the central area of Beijing metropolitan despite suburbanization, while only FEs show certain decentralization pattern; 2) A hierarchy of spatial centralization was found, from CSOEs to non-CSOEs, and then PEs and FEs, which is an exact reflection of institutional orders; 3) Only CSOEs are likely to locate approximately to central ministries, while the agglomeration of other HQ types is strongly influenced by the grouping of advanced producer services, indicating the synchronicity of state-public MNC alliance and MNC-capital networks. This makes Beijing a distinct state-centered political—bureaucratic world city mixed with certain features of market-centered bourgeois world cities. It is necessary to account for the administrative cost when considering a relocation of headquarters out of the Beijing metropolitan.</p>

Abstract:This study chose 4667 listed firms with headquarters in China as the research objects. The spatial aggregations of headquarters in sub-periods and subsectors were investigated based on prefecture-level cities using Global Moran's I statistic, the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic, and kernel density estimation. The spatial association and frequent patterns of headquarters belonging to different sectors were analyzed using the Apriori algorithm. The results showed the following: (1) Most headquarters of listed firms agglomerate around megacities and concentrate in the coastal regions. (2) Many prefer that headquarters be located in an area within a 5 km radius, forming the pivotal local industry cluster. (3) Industrial, information technology, and consumer discretionary firms show a higher degree of agglomeration than materials and health care firms. Materials and consumer discretionary industries have a stronger spillover effect on surrounding cities compared to industrial, information technology, and health care firms. (4) Service industries show a strong spatial association with other sectors at all distance thresholds and frequent items. These results can provide a reference for future considerations of headquarters locations, industrial development, and the reshaping of urban networks.

Abstract:This paper analyses the multimedia industry in the central Shanghai.It seeks to understand the relationship between industry distribution and location decision-making of multimedia industry in Shanghai.Firstly this paper introduces the definition of the multimedia industry,its development at present and the five industrial parks of the multimedia industry in the central Shanghai.The result shows the principle of the Government leads is outstanding in the progross of the industry distribution.Later it analyses the characteristics of enterprises' location decision-making on the ground of selecting six kinds of multimedia enterprises.The location decision-making presents a spatial agglomeration characteristic.Lastly this paper analyses the relationship between industry distribution and location decision-making of multimedia industry in detail and it concludes that the keys to develop the multimedia industry are to renew the role of the government and build the regional network of innovation.
