Abstract:The electromotive force of a galvanic cell composed of Na-glass electrode (or potassium ion-selective electrode) -chioride ion-selective electrode pair dipping in a mixed aqueous solution of NaCl and KCl were measured at total ionic strength of 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 moles/kg and 298.15K. By using the Nernst equation and measured EMF data, the corresponding activity coefficients of the electrolyte components were calculated. The obtained activity coefficients were well correlated by Pitzer equation, and the corresponding Pitzer parameters and interaction parameters were obtained. The activity coefficient data calculated from correlated equations were in good agreement with the experimental results.

Abstract:Electromotive force measurements of the cell, Na-ISE|polyelectrolyte( m p(mono) ),NaCl( m a)|AgCl,Ag,are carried out at the different molalities of NaCl in aqueous poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride)(PDADMAC)and poly(anetholesulfonic acid, sodium salt)(PAS) solutions at 308.15 K. The mean activity coefficients of NaCl in aqueous polyelectrolyte solutions are determined by using the standard cell potential which are obtained from the measurements of the electromotive force of cell,Na-ISE| NaCl( m )|AgCl, Ag, combining with the Pitzer model for electrolyte solution.At different concentrations of PDADMAC solution, the mean activity coefficients of NaCl decrease monotonically as the concentrations of NaCl increase.However, for the aqueous solutions of PAS, there is a maximum value as the concentrations of NaCl increase.

Abstract:The simple equation relating the activity coefficient of each solute in mixed electrolyte solution to its value in binary solutions under isopiestic equilibrium was tested by comparison with the experimental data for the 18 electrolyte solutions consisting of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 electrolytes. The isopiestic measurements were made on the quaternary system BaCl2-NH4Br-NaI-H2O and its ternary subsystems NaI-NH4Br-H2O, NaI-BaCl2-H2O, and NH4Br-BaCl2-H2O at 298.15K. The results were used to test the applicability of the Zdanovskii's rule to the mixed electrolyte solutions which contain no common ions, and the agreement is excellent. The activity coefficients of the solutes in the above quaternary and ternary systems calculated from the above-mentioned simple equation are in good agreement with the Pitzer's equation.

Abstract:Electromotive force (emf) measurements of the cell Na ion-selective electrode (glass)\NaCl, MeOH + H2O\Cl ion-selective electrode (solid state) were made in methanol + water containing 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 mass % of methanol, at 308.15 K and 318.15 K, respectively. Using the Fitter's equation calculations of standard cell potentials were made. The mean activity coefficients of NaCl were also derived.

Abstract:The cell potentials were determined by the cell without liquid junction K-ISE |KCl (m 0) |Cl-ISE firstly. Using Nernst equation and the measured cell potentials, the response slope κ of the single-salt electrode and the standard cell potential E 0 were fitted well. The total ionic strengths range from 0.0100 to 1.0000 mol·kg−1, the cell without liquid junction K-ISE |KCl (m 1), SrCl2 (m 2) |Cl-ISE is used to determine the mean activity coefficients of KCl in the KCl + SrCl2 + H2O solutions, the ionic strength fractions y b of SrCl2 are 0.8, 0.6, 0.4, 0.2 and 0. According to the measured cell potentials, the mean activity coefficients of KCl in the KCl + SrCl2 + H2O solutions were calculated by Nernst equation, and the relationship diagrams between the mean activity coefficients and total ionic strengths of the mixed solutions are drawn at 278.15 K. The mixed interaction parameters θ K,Sr, and ψ K,Sr,Cl in the Pitzer model were also obtained by regression of the mean activity coefficients of KCl in the mixed solutions. The mean activity coefficients of SrCl2, the osmotic coefficients, the water activities, and the excess Gibbs free energies of the mixed solutions were also calculated by Pitzer equations. Additionally, in order to verify the mixed ion parameters of Pitzer model fitted in this work, the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method is used to measure experimentally the phase equilibria of the mixed solutions at 278.15 K, and then the Pitzer equations and the mixed ion parameters are used to predict the solubilities of the salts in the mixed solutions at 278.15 K. The experimental and predicted phase diagrams are good agreement.

Abstract:The activity coefficients of the individual chloride ions were measured at 298.2K using a chloride ion selective electrode in aqueous solutions of MgCl2 and CaCl2 up to 3m and BaCl2 up to 1.4m. For these 2:1 electrolytes, the activity coefficients of magnesium, calcium and barium were calculated using values of the mean ionic activity coefficients of the salts. At low electrolyte concentrations, the activity coefficients of the cation are smaller than that of the anion and at higher concentrations the trend is reversed. These results are different from those reported for 1:1 and 1:2 electrolyte solutions studied previously. The activity coefficient of the chloride ion has similar behavior and similar values with Mg2+, Ca2+ or Ba2+ as counterions. Two different methods were used to evaluate the activity coefficients of the individual chloride ions from the emf measurements and the results were undistinguishable within the experimental error. The activity coefficient of the individual ions were correlated with the Khoshkbarchi–Vera equation values and compared with the values obtained from the hydration theory of Bates.

Abstract:Resorting to Debye-Huckel equation, the conception of the apparent dielectric constant epsilon' of sodium aluminate solution is introduced. By supposing that all the influences are attributed to it, epsilon' is successfully related to caustic ratio alpha(K), concentration m(NaOH), (T) and temperature T. Then an activity coefficient calculation model for NaAl (OH)(4)-NaOH-H2O system from 25 degrees C to 100 degrees C is established, which can be used in much wider alpha(K) and m(NaOH), (T) ranges than those covered by the equilibrium solubility data.

Abstract:This work reports the results of a thermodynamic investigation of the ternary mixed-electrolyte system (CsCl+CaCl2+H2O). The activity coefficients of this mixed aqueous electrolyte system have been studied with the electromotive force measurement (EMF) of the cell: Cs ion-selective electrode (ISE)|CsCl(mA), CaCl2(mB), H2O|Ag/AgCl at T=298.15K and over total ionic strengths from (0.01 to 1.50)mol·kg−1 for different ionic strength fractions yB of CaCl2 with yB=(0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8). The cesium ion-selective electrode (Cs-ISE) and the Ag/AgCl electrode used in this work were made in our laboratory and had a good Nernst response. The experimental results obey the Harned rule, and the Pitzer model can be used to describe this ternary system satisfactorily. The osmotic coefficients, excess Gibbs free energies and activities of water of the mixtures were also calculated.

Abstract:The relative static permittivity is a pivotal property in electrolyte solutions, playing a crucial role in thermodynamic calculations. This study employs the "Ion − Ion + Ion-Water" approach to calculate individual ionic activity coefficients within various electrolyte solutions at 298.15 K, including aqueous sodium chloride solutions at different temperatures. Two types of relative static permittivity are employed for these calculations: experimental values and modeled values. Notably, the "Ion − Ion + Ion − IWater" approach demonstrates robust performance in determining activity coefficients, regardless of the type of relative static permittivity used. Although minor discrepancies arise between calculations employing these two approaches, this research also delves into the impacts of varying relative static permittivity on activity coefficient determination.

Abstract:Activity coefficient gamma, of HCl in quaternary system of HCl-KCl-BaCl2-H2O was investigated by means of a reversible cell.H-2 vertical bar HCl(I-1), KCl(I-2), BaCl2(I-3) vertical bar AgCl-AgIt has been shown by the experiments that log gamma(1) varied linearly with I-3 at the constant total ionic strength I and I-3, but its value is only a little different from that of log gamma(1) calculated from the data by Harned for the corresponding ternary system. The log gamma(1) of HCl in quaternary system may be expressed bylog gamma(1) = log gamma(1) ((0)) - a(12)I(2) - a(13)I(3) - K23I3where the constant K-23 is the interaction coefficient between the electrolyte 2 and 3. For this system, K23 is very small. It was shown by our experiment that the Glue ckauf equation which we extended far the activity coefficient gamma of x(1)y(1) in a mixed electrolyte solution in presence of solutes x(2)y(2), ... ... x, y, ... ... x, y. (see formula 5) may be used approximately for the calculation y of the actual system by means of the activity coefficient y(a), y(i) of individual constituents.Using the crossing equation of thermodynamics to the quaternary system, we have deduced some thermodynamic relations which are similar with those of the ternary systems. a(21) and a(31) can be computed from the experimental data of a(12) and a(13) by these relations.

Abstract:It is believed that the thermodynamic properties, such as activity coefficient of UCl3 in molten LiCl-KCl, are concentration-dependent. However, most of the available experimental data now are limited to the extreme dilution cases. In the present study, thermodynamic integration (TI) method was applied to calculate the Gibbs energy of supercooled UCl3 and UCl3 in LiCl-KCl molten salt with different concentrations of UCl3 and then calculate the activity coefficient directly for different concentrations at a given temperature of 723 K. The calculated activity coefficients at low concentration cases were compared with available experimental measurements, and the comparison indicates the calculation results agree well with the literature. Most importantly, the present calculation shows that the activity coefficient of UCl3 in the molten salt is indeed a function of its concentration and increases with the mole fraction. Abstract:To explore the complex correlation between local structure and properties in the alkali chlorides ternary system, simulations were systematically conducted for 11 different (Li, Na, K) Cl compositions from 900 K to 1200 K as the fundamental study of magnesium chloride electrolysis. For the ternary system, the density was calculated across the full composition and database was established. Furthermore, the structure simulation results revealed that the coordination of Li-Cl pair tended to be a distorted tetrahedron and the Na-Cl and K-Cl pairs tended to be an octahedron. The prediction of the properties was compared with available experiments and extrapolated analytical data, the deviations are acceptable. The temperature had no significant effects on the local structure and thermal conductivity. The results also showed that the Tosi-Fumi potential predicted positive temperature dependence of self-diffusion coefficients and ionic conductivity, and negative temperature dependence of the viscosity. In addition, the correlation between the local structure and transport properties was explored. The hydrodynamic radius of Li+ and K+ is similar in the ternary system, it can be found that whilst the K+ ion diffuses as an atomic species, the Li+ ion carries at least some of its coordinating ions in the diffusion process, giving the diffusing species a larger effective size than the bare ion. Abstract:Studying the concentration and temperature dependence of the conductivity of electrolyte solution is of great significance for the evaluation and improvement of the performance of the electrochemical system. In this paper, based on the influence of the number of free ions and ion mobility on the conductivity, a semiempirical conductivity model with five parameters was proposed to correlate the conductivity, concentration and temperature data of electrolyte solutions at medium and high concentrations. The conductivities of NaCl and CaCl2 in propylene carbonate-H2O binary solvents were measured at temperatures varying from 283.15 to 333.15 K. The validity of the model was verified by the experimental data of this paper and the conductivity, concentration, and temperature data of 28 electrolyte solution systems in the literature. The electrolyte solutions investigated in this paper included binary organic solvent systems, pure organic solvent systems, and aqueous solution systems. The results showed that the proposed model can fit the experimental data well for both pure solvent and mixed solvents systems, which is of great value to practical engineering applications.

Abstract:The electromotive forces of a symmetrical concentration cell with transference, Ag; AgCl|LaCl3 (m*):LaCl3 (m)|AgCl; Ag, were measured over the concentration range from 8.762 × 10−4 mol kg−1 to 6.788 × 10−2 mol kg−1 at 298.15 K to obtain the mean activity coefficients of LaCl3. The mean activity coefficient for reference solution at 298.15 K and the ion size parameter for LaCl3 in the extended Debye–Hückel equation are evaluated by using an approach extrapolating concentration to unlimited dilution. A modified Debye–Hückel equation with new parameters has been established for the studied concentration range. A comparison is done of the thermodynamic data of LaCl3 that are determined by this experiment with those reported by previous literatures, and evaluated by some models.

Abstract:In this article, the three-particle-interaction correlation model was introduced for prediction of thermodynamic properties in electrolyte solutions. We proposed a new formula to estimate the water activity for aqueous electrolyte solutions at 298.15K; results showed our model could fit the experimental data very well. Variations of density and electric permittivity were included to improve the predictive accuracy for aqueous systems at other temperatures. This model also was extended for different kinds of nonaqueous solutions. The results of standard deviations (usually below 5%) indicated the good performance of our model. Based on Kumar mixing rule, we developed the model to estimate the mean activity coefficient for mixed aqueous systems with a common ion. Results of NH4NO3-KNO3 (aq) and KCl-K2SO4 (aq) system indicated the possibility of prediction of thermodynamic properties for multicomponent system directly from the binary information by using our model.

Abstract:Transport properties of concentrated electrolytes have been analysed using classical molecular dynamics simulations with the algorithms and parameters typical of simulations describing complex electrokinetic phenomena. The electrical conductivity and transport numbers of electrolytes containing monovalent (KCl), divalent (MgCl2), a mixture of both (KCl+MgCl2) and trivalent (LaCl3) cations have been obtained from simulations of the electrolytes in electric fields of different magnitude. The results obtained for different simulation parameters have been discussed and compared with experimental measurements of our own and from the literature. The electroosmotic flow of water molecules induced by the ionic current in different cases has been calculated and interpreted with the help of the hydration properties extracted from the simulations.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate some structural and dynamical properties of aqueous KCl solutions at different temperatures and concentrations. We study a 1.6 mol·kg –1 aqueous KCl solution at five temperatures and five concentrations at ambient conditions only. Molecular dynamics simulations with the flexible SPC water model were conducted to characterize all partial pair correlation functions, the velocities auto-correlation ones, and the dielectric constants. The analysis of the water pair correlation functions shows a disruption of the H-bond network and a decrease of the oxygen-hydrogen coordination number as temperature or salt concentration increases. The increase of each parameter favors the exchange of molecules between the first and the second hydration shells. Ions pair correlation functions show principally that the fraction of K + -Cl − contact ion pairs increases and that of separated ion pairs decreases with increasing temperature or concentration. For all particles, the values of the calculated self-diffusion coefficients rise with temperature and fall with salt concentration. The self-diffusion coefficients of K + and Cl − tend to towards each other at high concentration. Temperature or salt concentration causes a drop in the dielectric constant. For all studied temperatures or salt concentrations, the calculated ratio of the orientational correlation times τ 1 /τ 2 for the OH vector indicates that the motion of water molecules can be accounted for by an angular jumps model.

Abstract:CaO solubility in equimolar molten salts CaCl2–x (x=0, NaCl, KCl, SrCl2, BaCl2 and LiCl) was determined at 873–1223K and activity coefficient calculated. CaO solubility in the binary salts is less than in CaCl2, and the activity coefficient is greater than one.
