Abstract:The blended synchronous classroom (BSC) is an important form to promote the equity of urban and rural education. Compared with the traditional single-teacher classroom, the interaction has the characteristics of multi-objects in BSC. The teacher-student dialogue directly influences the teaching effectiveness of such classrooms. However, most existing research focuses on counting the frequency of teacher-student interaction, in similar teaching activities, which might overlook the quality and depth of teacher-student dialogue. To fill this gap, this research uses a variety of learning analytics and data mining methods (e.g., lag sequence analysis, social network analysis and K-means) to detect fine-grained attributes of transitions of teacher-student dialogue in 40 BSC lessons, based on Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives theory. The results show two kinds of classroom dialogue characteristics, as well as the transformation characteristics of questioning behaviors and the key questioning behaviors. This research deepens the understanding of the diversity of teacher-student dialogue and offers practical implications for improving the quality of classroom dialogue in BSC.

Abstract:The teacher self is a composite psychological construct which encompasses the cognitive, affective, emotional, and social dimensions of teaching. This qualitative study draws on Bakhtin’s concepts of dialogism, answerability, and addressivity to discuss how English language teachers negotiated the shifting and conflictive context to construct selves in relation to the promoted communicative language teaching approach. Based on narrative interviews and classroom observations with five tertiary English teachers in China, we found that these teachers were actively engaged in the dialog with their prior learning experiences and active, responsive in answering their contexts while authoring selves in everyday teaching practice. The multiple-case study data support a Bakhtinian understanding that teachers are active users and producers of theory in their own right, highlighting teachers’ agency, creativity, and autonomy. Based on Bakhtin’s dialogism and the case study findings, we bring cognition, identity and practice together and conceptualize the teacher self as having multiple facets and layers: the autobiographical self , the discursive self , and the pedagogical self . The three selves are constitutive of the consummated whole of the teacher self instead of being separate entities functioning individually. The study is concluded with implications for language teacher education and teacher development.

Abstract:This paper is part of an ongoing study of discursive behaviour both at home and at school. The overall goal of the analysis presented was to explore the level of dialogicity (Linell, 1998) manifest in Israeli classrooms. This quest was motivated by a sociocultural inclination towards learning, which places instructive dialogue at the core of successful teaching and learning. The question this article addresses is, what are the different types of teacher–student interaction prevailing in the classroom, and how do they affect ways of making meaning? Three main genres of classroom discourse were identified, differing in the degree of their dialogicity: Socratic dialogue – a topical discussion where the final text is created by students and teacher in concert, pseudodialogue – in which the students are made to believe they are engaged in a topical discussion while being assessed on grounds of interpersonal relationships and mode, and monologue in the guise of a dialogue – in which the teacher asks topical questions while seeking the reproduction of her own text. The two latter ones were found to be dominant in the classes we observed.

Abstract:In English classroom instruction, teacher talk is a critical role to impart comprehensible language to students and serves as a medium for the application of pedagogical strategies. The implementation of the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education requires junior high school English teachers to be more conscious of the ways in which their teaching incorporate emotional attitudes and values. Consequently, the analysis of excellent junior high school English teacher talk in terms of interpersonal function theory, proves instrumental for front-line teachers to reflect on their discourse regarding student emotion, teacher role, and the teacher-student relationships. This study endeavors to unravel the interpersonal significance embedded in teacher talk based on the mood system of the Systemic Functional Grammar model advanced by Halliday. And the research data are carefully collected through observing and recording classroom discourse of 5 distinguished junior high school English teachers in the 16th National Junior High School English Teaching Seminar. Based on the research findings, the study proposes pragmatic strategies aimed at refining teacher talk in order to foster an equitable and harmonious classroom atmosphere.

Abstract:The mind and action are the core categories of traditional research related to teacher's practice.The paradigms of positivism,interpretivism and criticism presuppose the relationship between language and mind,as well as the relationship between language and action.Positivism regards language as a tool of reflecting the objective state of teacher's mind and action.Interpretivism regards linguistic texts as the unique access to make teacher's practice meaningful.Criticism emphasizes the practical characteristics of teacher's speech act,and its constructive function in teacher's spiritual state while acknowledging the relative independence of teacher's mind,action and language.The reflexive linguistic view of criticism expresses a higher requirement for the conscious methodology of teacher's practice research,which makes the researchers realize that the language used by teachers to describe their practice is the important component of their practice.Only when this linguistic gap is noticed,will the teacher's practice research be able to fully reveal the characteristics of teacher's practice.

Abstract:With the improvement of people's awareness of gender equality, gender stereotypes in language have become a research hotspot in sociolinguistics. The materials of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) can reflect a certain social and cultural background, especially the gender stereotypes and differences in culture. This paper constructs the TCSOL dialogue corpus. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, this paper tests whether there are significant differences in the discourse characteristics of different genders from the perspectives of vocabulary richness, part-of-speech, semantics and sentiment, so as to explore the gender stereotypes in TCSOL materials. It is found that there is no statistically significant difference between dialogue texts from different genders. However, it still reflects a certain occupational gender bias and gender stereotypes in personality characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract Real-time verbal interactions between foreign language teachers and their students are of vital importance for language development, but classroom interactions are also multi-faceted and complex. The way a teacher understands and responds to learner utterances can be a powerful pedagogical strategy to scaffold learner language development. In this paper we present the Questions and Answers in English Language Teaching coding scheme which can be used to observe and describe the dynamics of teacher questions and student responses in language classrooms. We piloted the instrument in English as a foreign language lessons of four experienced teachers teaching 16 lessons in total. State Space Grids were used to visualize classroom dynamics and quantify intra-individual variability of each lesson. The results show that interactions between teachers and students have the tendency to self-organize and stabilize in one specific area of the grid. Lessons taught by three of the teachers revealed a dominant pattern formed by closed questions and short student responses. One teacher taught lessons in which more complex question and answer sequences were prevalent. These patterns of variability and stability show that teacher-student interactions have the properties of a shallow attractor state. The analysis of moment-to-moment turns in classroom interaction indicate that students in this study generally adapt their response to the level of teacher questions, but that teachers do not seem to adapt their questions to the level of the previous student answer. This suggests that, even for experienced teachers, scaffolding and adaptive teaching might be easier said than done.

Abstract:Effective teacher discourse is critical in improving English as a foreign language (EFL) education, particularly in junior high schools in China, where students are at a crucial stage in their language development. As junior high school students are at a pivotal developmental stage, this research investigates the discourse patterns employed by novice and expert teachers to assess their impact on students' engagement and language acquisition. Despite the extensive research on teacher discourse in higher education, a significant gap remains regarding its application in compulsory primary education settings. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the current classroom discourse patterns of EFL teachers in junior high schools to identify the distinctions between novice and expert teachers and explore the factors contributing to these differences. This mixed-methods study includes qualitative and quantitative analyses. Verbatim transcriptions of six classes were used to create a corpus exceeding 20,000 words. The data were analysed using cross-tabulation in Excel and Chi-square tests in SPSS 22.0, complemented by semi-structured interviews with selected teachers. The theoretical framework is grounded in Long's（1996）interaction hypothesis, which underlines the significance of communication in facilitating language proficiency through meaningful interaction, and the analysis follows Sinclair and Coulthard's（1975）discourse patterns. The initiation-response-feedback (IRF) and initiation-response-0 (IR0) emerged as predominant patterns among both novice and expert teachers. Novice teachers predominantly relied on the basic IRF pattern, while expert teachers exhibited greater flexibility and more frequent use of variant patterns, such as IRFR, I[RnFn] and [InRn]F. Such adaptability among expert teachers creates a more interactive and engaging learning environment, thereby enhancing student participation and language acquisition. The study also identifies a novel variant structure, IRnF, used more frequently by expert teachers, underlining the benefits of group work in fostering teamwork and independent thinking. Expert teachers demonstrated a greater propensity to adapt their discourse strategies to foster a more production-oriented learning environment, which was the main factor driving the teachers' differing discourse patterns. This study significantly contributes to the analysis of teacher discourse in the junior high school EFL context, providing empirical evidence and practical insights that bridge the gap between theory and practice. By elucidating the distinct discourse practices of novice and expert teachers, this study offers valuable recommendations for teacher professional development and highlights the importance of employing varied and interactive discourse structures to improve EFL teaching effectiveness. The study also provides valuable insights for educators striving to improve their instructional practices and the language acquisition in EFL classrooms.

Abstract:In China, due to the lack of a real language learning environment, the main place for students to contact English is the classroom. Therefore, teachers’ discourse in the classroom has an important impact on learners’ language acquisition. Specifically, on the one hand, teacher talk can organize and manage classroom teaching. On the other hand, it is conducive to students’ language input. At the same time, senior high school is a key period for students to learn English. The impact of excellent teacher talk on students’ language acquisition is beneficial. As a result, at this stage, it is vital to study teacher talk. Based on the input hypothesis proposed by Krashen and the interaction hypothesis proposed by Long, this article selects a senior teacher and her class in Zhengji senior high school in Jiangsu Province as the research object, and uses the method of naturalistic observation to observe and record the teacher’s discourse in the classroom. Then, through the analysis of the data, the current situation of English teachers’ classroom discourse in senior high schools is investigated in three ways in this thesis: the quantity of teacher talk, questioning methods and feedback methods, analyzes the existing problems, and tries to offer some sound counsel. Through research and analysis, this article draws the following conclusions: 1. Teachers are fully aware of the main role of students in classroom discourse, are changing the traditional teacher-centered teaching model, and strive to make students more involved in classroom activities. 2. Teachers should reasonably use the method of questioning in the classroom to combine display questions with referential questions, so as to cultivate students’ innovative thinking ability. 3. Teachers should use a variety of feedback methods to continuously stimulate students’ learning motivation and increase the number of possibilities for kids to develop language.

Abstract:Dialogic instruction, a form of instruction that engages students in meaningful and substantive classroom dialogue, has been shown to benefit students in many ways. However, few studies on dialogic instruction have focused on the role and agency of classroom teachers as they navigate and negotiate the vagaries of classroom talk, especially in contexts such as China where students are more accustomed to a more monologic mode of instruction. This practitioner research was conceived to address this gap in the literature by exploring the implementation of dialogic instruction in an English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom by the first author. A 15‐week instructional programme based on the principles of dialogic instruction was implemented in an intact English reading class in a Chinese university. Video‐recordings of all 15 lessons were transcribed and analysed using a coding system specifically designed to identify and examine the quality of dialogic moves made. The analysis shows the potential of dialogic instruction in the EFL classroom but also reveals some missed opportunities and challenges. The potential, challenges and other pedagogical implications are discussed with a view towards facilitating EFL teachers' implementation of dialogic instruction.

Abstract:This paper explores the relations between teacher beliefs and practices about the medium of instruction from the perspective of complex dynamic systems theory. Through a functional framework of teacher classroom discourse, mixed analytical models were adopted to fully describe the close interaction and non-linear relations between teacher beliefs and practices. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews from three college teachers working in a typical research-based university in northeast China. The findings revealed the complex and dynamic relations between teacher beliefs and practices about the medium of instruction. The consistency and inconsistency between the analysis of interviews and classroom observations represented the tensions and changes between teacher beliefs and practices about the medium of instruction. The study calls for attention to the socially situated and co-evolving relations between teacher beliefs and practices and how they develop with contextual affordances, attractor states, flexible goals, and high dependence on initial conditions.

Abstract:In the context of the diversity and multi-modality of teaching feedback, the importance of teacher feedback has been impacted by online (computer) feedback and peer feedback, so it's necessary to highlight and give full play to the important role of teacher feedback. After analysis of the characteristics of hybrid translation teaching, the research asserts that all feedback should be given full play to their roles in translation teaching. Teachers are suggested focusing on students' necessities to offer re-feedback and deep feedback by highlighting key and difficult points, meanwhile, to enrich cultural literacy and provide value guidance as well as promoting students to actively perceive, understand and adopt feedback information are the core work of teacher’s feedback to improve translation teaching efficiently and effectively.

Abstract:This qualitative study investigated the impact of discussion panels on language education, focusing on willingness to communicate (WTC), growth mindfulness, and autonomy among Chinese learners at intermediate and upper-intermediate proficiency levels. The study, conducted in Hebei, China, involved 27 learners, with 14 in the experimental group exposed to discussion panels and 13 in the control group receiving traditional teacher-fronted lessons. The research design employed semi-structured interviews, observations, and document analysis for data collection, analyzed manually through thematic analysis. Results revealed that learners in the experimental group exhibited heightened WTC, increased growth mindfulness, and greater autonomy compared to the control group. The discussion panels facilitated authentic language use, collaborative discourse, and turn-taking, aligning with communication theory, sociocultural theory (SCT), and learner-centered pedagogy. Findings also resonated with the significance of WTC in language learning, supported by established theories. Additionally, the study contributes to the growing literature on the intersection of mindfulness, autonomy, and language education. Implications for language teachers, policy-makers, syllabus-designers, and materials developers are discussed, emphasizing the potential benefits of integrating discussion panels. The study concludes with insights into limitations, suggestions for further research, and a call for pedagogical innovation to enhance language learning experiences.
