Abstract:Most of shape memory alloys (SMAs) are functional intermetallic.They are now practically being used for couplings, actuators, medical guide wires etc.And are hopeful candidates for smart materials, which already exist.Several papers review the latest developments in the modelling of SMAs constitutive behavior.The basic properties of SMAs are including the shape memory effect, pseudoelasticity, as well as other properties such as the acquired and two-way shape memory effect, damping capacity and fatigue life.This paper focus on the modelling of SMAs coil spring actuators, which are used as artificial muscle for its light weight and large deformation.In order to obtain the required force, the shear modulus method has been used in the modelling process.And the parameters of SMAs coil spring can be determined.The theoretical analysis accords well with experiment results.

Abstract:Shape memory alloy are a class of materials capable of producing a significant force or displacement in response to a thermal control input. Being simple, light, and powerful, shape memory alloy actuators hold much promise for the future of lightweight robotics and miniaturization. As classic obstacles such as further miniaturization, speed of operation and limited strain are overcome, their widespread application may become a reality, and the field of robotics will benefit from a truly novel actuator. In this paper, a novel shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator consisting of a number of thin NiTi fibers woven in a counter rotating helical pattern around supporting disks was first described. The actuator overcame the main mechanical drawback of shape memory alloys——limited strain. At the same time, a simulator was developed to predict characteristics of the given actuator, or to define its geometry under specifications such as force, speed, stroke and size. Finally, experimental and simulation results in the time domain were discussed.

Abstract:To overcome low-response speed and low-control precision in the existing traditional shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators, a new type of structure named planar bending embedded SMA actuator was developed. Two SMA wires were embedded in parallel with the axis of the elastic rod. The recovering wire, which was superposed along rod's axis, was set to obtain 'U' memory shape and the restoring wire, which was placed off-axially, got straight memory shape. The differential stain gauges were located at suitable position in corresponding to the actuator's bending direction in order to measure the signal of displacement. By making use of continuity, common origin and common limit conditions, and adjusting martensite fraction coefficients appropriately, the analytical model was deduced to adequately account for the presence of major and minor hysteresis loops. The structural parameters of 60 mm long actuator, such as rod's radius, wire's radius, wire's recoverable curvature, and offset distance, were optimized by combining analytical model with experimental results. The experimental results prove the merits in optimal prototype.

Abstract:Novel planar and spatial bending embedded shape memory alloy actuators are depicted firstly. The actuators are mainly made up of room temperature vulcanization silicone elastic rods with several axial or bias embedded SMA wires. The operating principles of actuators are discussed in detail as well as the practical specifications of prototype are determined depending on optimized design of the configuration parameters. Moreover, precise and practical shape analysis models calculating martensite fraction using two exponential equations for heating and cooling respectively are reached to overcome the inherently non-linearity arising from the nature of shape memory effect. Finally, an anthropomorphic flexible three-fingered robot hand making use of planar and spatial bending ESMAAs is developed

Abstract:SMA (shape memory alloy) actuators have found a wide range of applications due to their unique properties such as high force, long stroke, small size, light weight, and silent operation, etc. However, their strong nonlinear properties make them a challenge to achieve accurate actuation. This paper presents a simple control strategy based on the idea of adjusting the SMA wire temperature as fast as possible. This strategy is simple, stable, and requires no hysteresis model or thermal model. This strategy is tested with displacement output, and effects of updating rate and input current on control accuracy are also discussed. This control strategy is then used for active shape control of inflatable space structures. Results indicate that under this control strategy, shape memory alloy wire actuators can offer very good accuracy, and for inflatable structure shape control, great improvement can be achieved

Abstract:In recent years, there has been significant advancement in the technological development of shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators, resulting in their increased maturity and wider applicability. Concurrently, the industry’s demand for compact, rapid-response actuators with high precision has seen a notable rise. In light of this, this study presents a novel SMA actuator utilizing Ni-Ti shape memory alloy (Ni-Ti SMA) wire, driven by the concept of SMA wire heating-induced contraction. The proposed actuator serves a dual purpose: measuring the intrinsic self-sensing attributes of the SMA wire and accurately ascertaining displacement alterations through the phase transition of the SMA wire, thereby precisely determining positional changes. By capitalizing on the resistance-displacement mapping relationship during the SMA wire’s phase transformation, autonomous self-sensing control is achieved without the need for external sensors. To meet the imperatives of rapid response, superior precision, and minimal form factor for the SMA wire, the actuator is ingeniously integrated to incorporate an auxiliary position sensor and a self-resetting loading mechanism. This integration significantly downsizes the overall dimensions of the SMA actuator, aligning it with the criteria of compactness while retaining performance.

Abstract:A new structure of Entirely-integrated Spatial-bending Shape Memory Alloy Actuators (ESSMAA) is first presented. Three SMA wires, which are trained to remember “U” recovery shape, are embedded in liquid silicone rubber to be solidified upon room temperature, companied with displacement sensors and connective wires. The Spatial bending, which is accomplished through heating SMA wires by suitable current, can restore flexibly as soon as stopping heating. Thus, the compact, two-way, mechanical and electrical incorporation actuator is completed. Be provided with the merits such as high load-weight ratio, low energy dissipation and direct driving, the actuators can realize miniature configuration, simple drive and control, precise operation and flexible movement pose synthetically. On the basis of expounding the operation principle in detail, the curvature sensor, which is composed of six stain gauges, makes displacement control precise. After analyzing equilibrium of forces and moments, the numeric calculation equations are deduced. Subsequently, the approximate arithmetic making use of superpose principle is researched in contrast with numeric arithmetic. The manufacture of the prototype is discussed in details and the precise displacement control is implemented also. Finally, the experimente of the actuator proof fine qualities of the operation performances.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a new structure of compact flexible actuator based on SMA springs. The SMA actuator which allows a large bending angle and spatial bending for practical application and has a simple structure for miniaturization. An SMA actuator 6 mm in outer diameter with three shape memory alloy springs was designed and fabricated. The practical specifications of the SMA coil spring were determined based on a design chart and equation. The mechanical properties of the bending part were investigated. After analyzing equilibrium of elastic rod with distributed and concentrated loads, the parameters design process of the rod and SMA spring are deduced. Subsequently, the manufacture of the prototype is discussed in details and the drive and control system is implemented also. Finally, the experiments of the actuator proof fine qualities of the operation performances.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel flexible shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator, which is mainly composed of an SMA wire and a multilayer tubular structure. The multilayer tubular structure, which consists of a polytetrafluoroethylene tube, a metallic hose and a rubber tube, possesses the properties of good flexibility and high axial stiffness. The flexibility makes the SMA actuator easy to integrate into a compact or thin, narrow space with dimension constraints. The high axial stiffness helps in handling serious bending and prevents buckling of the SMA actuator. To verify the performance of the proposed actuator, a prototype was fabricated and a corresponding experimental setup was established. The effects of critical parameters, including heating current, winding angle, and applied load were experimentally investigated. The result demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed actuator and its easy integration into confined spaces. This work creates expanded opportunities for developing SMA actuators into broader application fields.

Abstract:The embedded shape memory alloy actuators(ESMAAs), which are actually elastic rods with embedded shape memory alloy(SMA) wires, have the abilities of integrating actuation components with deflexion components and serve as not only driving elements but also executing elements.Then, the shortcomings of conventional shape memory alloy actuators are solved radically.The ESMAAs can be divided into three sorts, i.e.ends-connected ESMAA, linear ESMAA and flexural ESMAA according to the manners of SMA wires embedded in the rods.The operation principles, analysis model, manufacture techniques and comparison of the operation characteristics were investigated.The research results show that, NiTi alloy is selected as the material for SMA wires, two-component room temperature vulcanization(RTV) is for ends-connected ESMAA, single-component RTV 401 is for linear ESMAA and single component RTV 515 is for flexural ESMAA.The flexural and linear actuators have higher integrated degree than ends-connected ESMAAs.In the linear ESMAA, the precision of location of the SMA wires greatly influences the properties of the actuators.On the contrary, the flexural ESMAAs have bigger tolerance.The flexural ESMAA, outputting the same curvature with smaller prestrain, have longer cycle life and facilitate producing humanoid robot hand's finger.

Abstract:A constitutive relationship has been applied to study the behavior of structures and composites of the shape-memory alloy (SMA). The predictability of the constitutive relationship is confirmed by the uniaxial and multiaxial examples. The paper gives out the finite element algorithmic implementations, which is applied to implement as umat of ABAQUS. As two kinds of applications, CT (compact tensile) and TPB (three point bending) specimens and SMA-fiber reinforced metal matrix and metal-fiber reinforced SMA-matrix composites are analyzed. The different distributions of martensite fraction of the CT specimens and TPB-specimens made of SMAs are explained by the-different stress characteristics ahead the cracks. The relative study on the SMA composites shows that the bulk mechanic behavior depends on the volume of SMA and the non-SMA matrix/fiber properties.

Abstract:Research on shape memory polymer is developing promptly over the past three decades, holding the promise to apply in micro actuators, medicine, basic science, biological science, deployable structure, anti-counterfeit technology, sensor and automobile. Actuation methods and mechanisms are parts of the important developments in shape memory polymer. Shape memory polymer nanocomposites are usually constructed by functional nanomaterials such as mesoporous materials, hierarchical porous materials, nanocomposite membranes, nanotubes and nanowires. Numerous studies of shape memory polymer nanocomposite have been performed to interpret experimental data and provide rational design. This review focuses on state-of-the-art actuation methods such as chemo-responsive, electrically resistive Joule heating activated, light-activated, microwave heating triggered, and magnetically sensitive shape memory polymer nanocomposites in most recent studies. Specifically, emphases are placed on the actuation mechanism, the advanced design concept, and the potential application of novel shape memory polymer nanocomposite probabilities to a wide variety of areas. Abstract:As a novel function material, shape memory alloy (SMA) is an integration of sensor and actuator which have drawn much attention in civil engineering. More and More studies on SMA are conducted at the present time, while its practical application still remains at beginning stage. In this paper, the development process is reviewed firstly, then the basic characteristic and the constitutive model of SMA are briefly introduced. According to the function of SMA in structure control, the study progress as active control devices and passive control devices are summarized respectively, and the applications of SMA devices in real projects are also presented, along with a review of the current study status of SMA intelligent concrete Finally the existing problems are pointed out and the future studies are proposed in civil engineering.
