Abstract:A novel system of oxidant-CrO3 combined with Ce(SO4)(2), has been demonstrated to be an effective and economic oxidant for the oxidation of alkyl benzenes to ketones or aldehydes with little by-products and high yields Including 1-(2,4-diethylphenyl)ethanone (3), seven alkyl benzenes have been studied, the products have been characterized by the elemental analyses, H-1, C-13 NMR and EI-MS. The possible mechanisms of this oxidation reaction were also proposed The obtained 5-acetyl-3-methyl isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one (5), the by-product of 3 was also confirmed by the crystal structure.

Abstract:We report the first catalytic method for activating the acyl C-O bonds of methyl esters through an oxidative-addition process. The oxidative-addition adducts, formed using nickel catalysis, undergo in situ trapping to provide anilide products. DFT calculations are used to support the proposed reaction mechanism, to understand why decarbonylation does not occur competitively, and to elucidate the beneficial role of the substrate structure and the Al(OtBu)(3) additive on the kinetics and thermodynamics of the reaction.

Abstract:A core-shell structure of Pt@SnOx/SiO2 was developed for the selective hydrogenation of acrolein. Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:A tetrabutylammonium peroxydisulfate-mediated oxidative procedure for the mild selective deprotection of allyl ethers to form the corresponding alcohols is described. The alcohols are obtained in yields of 81-85% and the method is compatible with several functional groups under these reaction conditions.

Abstract:An efficient and highly selective method for the oxidative conversion of primary amines to the corresponding nitriles using trichloroisocyanuric acid in the presence of catalytic TEMPO under mild reaction conditions is described. Other functional groups such as C,C-double bonds, benzyloxy etc. were found to be unaffected under the reaction conditions. This procedure provides a new entry to the synthesis of various aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic nitriles in excellent yield.

Abstract:Iron-catalyzed direct reduction of allylic halides with benzylic alcohol was achieved, providing a new, simple, and efficient method for conducting highly regioselective hydrodehalogenation. This method not only features a readily available reductant, an inexpensive catalyst, simple manipulation, and good tolerance of functional groups including nitriles, nitro, esters, and methoxyl groups, it also has mild reaction conditions and shows complete regioselectivity in that only halides sited at the allylic position are reduced. Alternatively, this method can be applied in the selective transformation of benzylic alcohols to aromatic aldehydes without overoxidation to carboxylic acids.

Abstract:The selective oxygenation of ubiquitous C(sp 3 )−H bonds remains a highly sought‐after method in both academia and the chemical industry for constructing functionalized organic molecules. However, it is extremely challenging to selectively oxidize a certain C(sp 3 )−H bond to afford alcohols due to the presence of multiple C(sp 3 )−H bonds with similar strength and steric environment in organic molecules, and the alcohol products being prone to further oxidation. Herein, we present a practical and cost‐efficient electrochemical method for the highly selective monooxygenation of benzylic C(sp 3 )−H bonds using continuous flow reactors. The electrochemical reactions produce trifluoroacetate esters that are resistant to further oxidation but undergo facile hydrolysis during aqueous workup to form benzylic alcohols. The method exhibits a broad scope and exceptional site selectivity and requires no catalysts or chemical oxidants. Furthermore, the electrochemical method demonstrates excellent scalability by producing 115 g of one of the alcohol products. The high site selectivity of the electrochemical method originates from its unique mechanism to cleave benzylic C(sp 3 )−H bonds through sequential electron/proton transfer, rather than the commonly employed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT).

Abstract:The direct catalytic oxidation of alcohols to esters is very appealing, but the economical-friendly catalysis systems are not yet well established. Herein, we show that a pure inorganic ligand-supported single-atomic cobalt compound, (NH4)3[CoMo6O18(OH)6] (simplified as CoMo6), could be used as a heterogeneous catalyst and effectively promote this type of reaction in the presence of 30% H2O2 using KCl as an additive. The oxidative cross-esterification of various alcohols (aromatic and aliphatic) could be achieved under mild conditions in nearly all cases, affording the corresponding esters in high yields, including several drug molecules and natural products. Detailed studies have revealed that chloride ion is able to bind to the CoMo6 to form a supramolecular dimer 2(CoMo6∙Cl), which can effectively catalyze the reaction via a synergistic effect from chloride ion and CoMo6. Mechanism studies and control reactions demonstrate that the esterification proceeds via the key oxidative immediate of aldehydes.

Abstract:Herein, a site-selective paired electrochemical C–H oxidation of functionalized alkyl arenes promoted by nickel catalyst is disclosed. A Ni(II)-dioxygen species formed in situ efficiently enable the oxidation process under mild conditions with a broad substrate scope with excellent functional group compatibilities, such as free carboxylic acid, aldehyde, halogen (including aryl iodide), amide and amino acid. The use of the nickel catalyst in combination with water provides a safe, green and economical method for oxidation of a range of molecules varying in complexity and drug derivatives, demonstrating its potential application in organic synthesis and the pharmaceutical industry. Reaction outcomes and mechanistic studies revealed the key role of the in situ Ni(II)-dioxygen species for the subsequent oxidation of C(sp3)–H bonds, and short-lived reactive intermediates (aryl radical cation) was rapidly captured by the combination of a bipolar ultramicroelectrode (BUME) with nano-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Selective electrocatalytic oxidation of alcohols to value-added aldehydes has attracted increasing attention. However, due to its higher reactivity than alcohol, the aldehyde is easily over-oxidized to acid in alkaline electrolytes. Herein we realize the selective electrooxidation of alcohol to aldehyde on NiO by tuning the local microenvironment to salt out the aldehyde from the reaction system. The origin of the high selectivity was found to be the inhibition of the hydration of aldehydes, which is the result of the decreased alkalinity and the increased cation and substrate concentration. This strategy could salt out the aldehyde at the gas|electrolyte interface from the electrooxidation of alcohol with 100 % selectivity and be easily extended to other selective oxidation reactions, such as 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxaldehyde (DFF) and amine to an imine.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalytic ammoxidation provides an eco-friendly route for the cyanide-free synthesis of nitrile compounds, which are important precursors for synthetic chemistry and pharmaceutical applications. However, in general such a process requires high pressures of molecular oxygen at elevated temperatures to accelerate the oxygen reduction and imine dehydrogenation steps, which is highly risky in practical applications. Here, we report an electric field enhanced ammoxidation system using a supported Fe clusters catalyst (Fe/NC), which enables efficient synthesis of nitriles from the corresponding aldehydes under ambient air pressure at room temperature (RT). A synergistic effect between the external electric field and the Fe/NC catalyst promotes the ammonia activation and the dehydrogenation of the generated imine intermediates and avoids the unwanted backwards reaction to aldehydes. This electric field enhanced ammoxidation system presents high efficiency and selectivity for the conversion of a series of aldehydes under mild conditions with high durability, rendering it an attractive process for the green synthesis of nitriles with fragile functional groups.

Abstract:With alkyl halides (I, Br, Cl) as a coupling partner, an electrochemically driven strategy for para‐selective C(sp2)−H alkylation of electron‐deficient arenes (aryl esters, aldehydes, nitriles, and ketones) has been achieved to access diverse alkylated arenes in one step. The reaction enables the activation of alkyl halides in the absence of sacrificial anodes, achieving the formation of C(sp2)‐C(sp3) bonds under mild electrolytic conditions. The utility of this protocol is reflected in high site selectivity, broad substrate scope, and scalable.
