Abstract:Contemporary Chinese culture consists of traditional Chinese culture, Marxist culture through the Soviet Union and Western liberalistic culture. This special cultural structure includes the following cultural conflicts: the conflict between universalism and ethnocentrism, the conflict between totalitarianism and individualism, the conflict between the unbalanced development of market economy and achieving common prosperity, the conflict between the development of science and technology and the rampancy of scientism, and the conflict between radicalism and conservatism. This paper argues that the outlets of contemporary Chinese culture lie in establishing the necessary tensions between accepting universal values and stressing China’s particularity, between the economic construction and the reform of the political system, between the construction of the legal system and the moral construction, and between developing science and technology and promoting humanist spirit.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese culture covers a variety of ethical principles and behavioral norms that have arisen from thousands of years of Chinese social life to handle interpersonal relationships in an appropriate way. Such principles and norms are a typical expression of Chinese people's wisdom in the analysis of their surroundings. However, traditional Chinese culture also contains some poisonous thinking that has been carefully nurtured by feudal rulers to maintain their power. In the practice of the great social changes of pre-1949 China, after repeated experience, people gained a relatively clear and comprehensive understanding of traditional Chinese culture: it should neither be totally affirmed nor totally rejected. Rather, we should analyze it concretely, endeavoring to separate the dross from the essence. In late Qing and Republican China, traditional culture was continuously handed on and renewed, and this process will be carried on and on.

Abstract:As the cultural conflicts between the West and the East have been intensifying, the cultural spirit and identity of China have become the focus of Chinese literature in the context of globalization. The basic characteristics are revealed in the following six aspects: 1. more concept of linear time than that of ideological space; 2. more Western discourse than Chinese identity; 3. more deconstructive discourse than constructive spirit; 4. more mass-consumption discourse than focus on select cultural goods; 5. more concentration on non-literature than the literature of Chinese culture; 6. more focus on physical significance than the stance of the intellectual individual. We should always try to discover the Orient and the export of our culture on the basis of a dialogue between Chinese literary criticism and Western literary criticism to make Chinese literature better known to the whole world and to correctly interpret mankind.

Abstract:The national culture security is one of the important domains of contemporary non-traditional security studies. In the nationalistic universal system, the major aspects of national culture security are political culture security, language and information security, and civil education system security. The wide field of nontraditional security studies inspires national governments to pay more attention to the benign interaction between domestic cultural innovation stratagem and transnational culture exchange stratagem. First, they reflect the history of ideology ″cold war″ between U.S. and Soviet Union, and reevaluate the function of national political ideology, all these reflections and reevaluations possess the consciousness of ″open″ and (″transcendence″). Secondly, in order to protect the native language and information security, most governments start to advocate and cherish the multiplex unity. Thirdly, many state leaders now focus on the transnational education network system and carefully deal with the tendency of study abroad. They are trying to encourage these exchange education programs and reform the domestic education system at the same time. All these changes offer many inspirations for us to establish the strategy of contemporary Chinese culture security. First, Chinese political culture needs modern (opening and enlightened) nationality and China can cooperate with others to create the common transnational ideology. China can also actively participate in the construction of international cultural criterions. Secondly, we should make innovation to our self-knowledge of ″great power of national culture″. Thirdly, we have to enhance the transnational cooperation to supervise those cross-nation linkage of cultural extremists and be on guard against different type of confusions based on cultural non-consciousness.

Abstract:It is virtually in the context of postmodernismthat the popular topic of has been interrogated and expounded. The exponents on modernity have enquired into its secret worry in various aspects, and the question as towhose modernityhas again touched upon the issue of cultural centralism, thus having converted the query of modernity into a consideration on the diversity scheme of modernity, and having exerted a profound impact on the ideological circles in China. There are two orientations to be noted in the diversity scheme of modernity : one is the attempt of Charles Taylor to seek resources from communalism to construct the non-centralized global graph by virtue of cultural discrepancies, the other being the assumption of obtaining bases from traditionalism. Modernity remains unfulfilled in China whereas the impact of traditionalism is strongly felt, thus the proponents for adhering to basic concepts of western modernity may even propose instituting the ideological and cultural bases of Chinese modernity by relying on traditionalism. It is opined in this paper that by transcending the contrast between homogeneity and diversity as well as between center and periphery and returning to the individual genuine instincts , an ideological culture of minimum subject can be established, which may be an assumption fit for modem Chinese cultural context and which, as a new starting point, may lead to more vibrant postmodern culture under the pretext of preserving the fundamental value concept of modernity.

Abstract:This book is divided into three main parts: an introduction to theories of culture, a section on Chinese culture, and one on cultural construction. The first part can be interpreted as an attempt to explore the meta-theoretical system of culture at the philosophical level. Based on the concept of “culture as ways of living,” the book further defines “culture” as “the preparation of people,” including the processes by which people adapt to local cultural and social customs. It stresses the subjectivity of culture, and the cultural rights and responsibilities of humankind. The second part takes on the subjective perspective of contemporary Chinese culture, interpreting it within the context of the historical situation of the Chinese people and nation, before engaging in a systematic reflection on several fundamental issues of Chinese culture. It closes by evaluating Chinese cultural practices and formulating a type of contemporary cultural self-identity. The book’s third part focuses on the interconnection between the revival of the Chinese nation and the modernization of Chinese society, analyzing the conditions and challenges for the three primary types of contemporary Chinese culture: material culture, political culture and spiritual culture. Lastly, the book puts forward suggestions concerning several of the critical problems facing a society in transition.

Abstract:Following the trend of quick development of international organizations, China has to find out her cultural orientation in her closer cooperation with international organizations. First, China should actively join different kinds of international dialogues, to advance cultural “taking” and “giving” simultaneously. Secondly, emphasize the dynamic study of “idea strategy” and the construction of “cultural politics”. Thirdly, truly comprehend and well explain the contemporary value of Chinese cultural tradition, based on the deep understanding of the practical demands of modern world and China's national interests. For example, we should exploit more theoretical space on the issue of “human rights” and “sovereign rights”. Considering the peaceful international communication, the studies of “evolutionary learning”, “communication and human behavior”, “intercultural conflict”, are good sources of inspiration.

Abstract:In the perspective of modernity, the narration of modern Chinese literary history should be unfolded as modernity with Chinese characteristics , which are as follows: First, its premise of modernity is misplaced. In contrast with the fragmentation in western modernity, the Chinese counterpart quests for the unity of forces in politics, morality, esthetics, etc. Second, it mistakes the western resources of modernity. The Chinese intelligentsia misreads, misplaces and misuses the western modernity. Third, its modernity is ambivalent. The ambivalence can be found both in and outside its modernity. Last, its philosophy of modernity is confusing. Rationalism and irra- tionalism are mixed up, which results in a confused holist thinking-a neutrality with stress on unity and an avoidance of polarity.

Abstract:Based on a social-historical analysis of "Chinese modernity" and "Chinese cultural identity" in the context of social transformation,i.e.recovering the face of modernity as a "historical event" since the late Qing Dynasty,we can conclude "the Deng Zhenglai Question" deals with the pathology of "crisis of cultural identity" and "absence of Confucian orthodoxy" in our time.Because of the coexistence of pressure of rightness and crisis of identity in contemporary China,we are supposed to shape a new cultural identity which can response to the pressure of rightness,and seek for a "hybridity identity" among Confucian tradition,socialist tradition and partial western tradition.When reconstructing the cultural identity,we should act up to "the Precept by Deng Zehngali-Wang Hui & Deng Xiaomang-Qing Hui",which means the constriction of a "new civilization"(in the sense of Liang Qichao) between China and the West,neither returning to the tradition unconditionally nor adhering to the West unreflectedly.

On the Innate Tensions In the Western Rationalist Culture:A Way to Understand the Secret Behind the Image of China Constructed by the Western Mass Medias

Abstract:As for the image of China constructed presently by the western mass medias,this paper points out that this image has resulted from the innate tensions within the western rationalist culture.Starting from the critique of religions,this rationalist culture has successfully constructed human beings as the subject of life at the dimension of individuals,nations and the history. However,at the same time,the development and enrichment of this rationalist culture is always accompanied by the romantic critique of modernity. The latter has finally been embodied in the correspondence between Karl Marx's critique of the private property and other contemporary philosophers' (like John Dewey's ) critique of the belief in rationality.These two critiques are then integrated into one in those western Marxist's(Like George Lukacs') critiques of the capitalist society.In this way,the innate tensions within the rationalist culture have been made clear and pushed to the surface.What is most noteworthy about this is that these innate tensions have not naturally resulted in the dissolution of the rationalist culture,but rather have strengthened its ideological language,since the critiques have stopped at the theoretical and negative critiques.The image of China constructed by the western mass media recently is just the direct product of this strengthened language of rationalism.

Abstract:Modernity is closely related to social changes in the process of modernization. As the process of modernization deepens, scholars begin to reflect on the issue of modernity. Generally, modernity is characterized by a historical break, which has three aspects: motivation, institutional framework, and ideology of daily life. The issue of modernity presents itself in China as the universalization of modernity takes place. Chinese conceptions of modernity are compatible with other conceptions. The May 4th Movement is justified against the background of historical break. The issue of modernity in China has its own concerns. It is argued that our discussion of modernity has already taken the right orientation by endeavoring to construct a new pattern of cultural transformation of the Chinese society on the basis of self-identification.
