Abstract:The amount of studies and patents on royal jelly in 2012 reached the top in the past five years. Both the amounts of SCI papers and articles in Chinese core journals increased over last year. The overall number of royal jelly patents remained stable. Studies and patents on royal jelly in different regions and applied areas at home and abroad in 2012 were classified for calculation and comparison. The hotspots of studies and important achievements of royal jelly were introduced.

Abstract:Royal jelly (RJ) is a yellowish-white and acidic secretion of hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of nurse bees used to feed young worker larvae during the first three days and the entire life of queen bees. RJ is one of the most appreciated and valued natural product which has been mainly used in traditional medicines, health foods, and cosmetics for a long time in different parts of the world. It is also the most studied bee product, aimed at unravelling its bioactivities, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-aging, immunomodulatory, and general tonic action against laboratory animals, microbial organisms, farm animals, and clinical trials. It is commonly used to supplement various diseases, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, and Alzheimer’s disease. Here, we highlight the recent research advances on the main bioactive compounds of RJ, such as proteins, peptides, fatty acids, and phenolics, for a comprehensive understanding of the biochemistry, biological, and pharmaceutical responses to human health promotion and life benefits. This is potentially important to gain novel insight into the biological and pharmaceutical properties of RJ.

Abstract:China is the largest royal jelly producer and exporter in the world, and high royal jelly-yielding strains have been bred in the country for approximately three decades. However, information on the molecular mechanism underlying high royal jelly production is scarce. Here, a cDNA microarray was used to screen and identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) to obtain an overview on the changes in gene expression levels between high and low royal jelly producing bees. We developed a honey bee gene chip that covered 11,689 genes, and this chip was hybridised with cDNA generated from RNA isolated from heads of nursing bees. A total of 369 DEGs were identified between high and low royal jelly producing bees. Amongst these DEGs, 201 (54.47%) genes were up-regulated, whereas 168 (45.53%) were down-regulated in high royal jelly-yielding bees. Gene ontology (GO) analyses showed that they are mainly involved in four key biological processes, and pathway analyses revealed that they belong to a total of 46 biological pathways. These results provide a genetic basis for further studies on the molecular mechanisms involved in high royal jelly production.

Abstract:In this article, we reviewed the research status of propolis at home and abroad in 2012. Based on 278 Chinese and English literatures as well as 7 master’s dissertation, we classified the literatures and analyzed them based on the research areas, geographic and journals distributions. We also highlighted the researches on the topic of propolis about the pharmacological activities, chemical compositions, quality control, safety as well as the applications of propolis in agriculture and animal husbandry. We also summarized the issued patents in 2012.

Abstract:Propolis is one of the most fascinating honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) products. It is a plant derived product that bees produce from resins that they collect from different plant organs and with which they mix beeswax. Propolis is a building material and a protective agent in the bee hive. It also plays an important role in honey bee social immunity, and is widely used by humans as an ingredient of nutraceuticals, over-the-counter preparations and cosmetics. Its chemical composition varies by geographic location, climatic zone and local flora. The understanding of the chemical diversity of propolis is very important in propolis research. In this manuscript, we give an overview of the available methods for studying propolis in different aspects: propolis in the bee colony; chemical composition and plant sources of propolis; biological activity of propolis with respect to bees and humans; and approaches for standardization and quality control for the purposes of industrial application.

Abstract:Being abundant in nutrition,royal jelly(RJ) still has multi-biological activities as a good material for scientific studies.Anti-aging effect of RJ has received great attention for a long time while its mechanism is still not clear.Owning to the development of technology,studies were performed to determine the components and mechanisms of RJ which indicated that active proteins might be the main functional factors and its antioxidative activity was likely to be one of the most important reasons for presenting anti-aging property.Basing on studies about antioxidative activity,immunostimulatory effect and stimulation of cell growth of RJ,we discussed its material bases and action mechanisms,in order to offer theoretic evidence and do good to enhance its extra value as well as develop its applicable area.

Abstract:Royal jelly (RJ), a secretion produced by honeybees, has garnered significant interest for its potential as a therapeutic intervention and functional food supplement. This systematic review aims to synthesize current research on the health benefits, bioactive components, and mechanisms of action of RJ. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, focusing on studies published from 2000 to 2024 (April). Findings indicate that RJ exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-aging effects. Beneficial biological properties of RJ might be due to the presence of flavonoids proteins, peptides, fatty acids. Both preclinical and clinical studies have reported that RJ improves the immune function such as wound healing, and also decreases the severity of chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. The molecular mechanisms underlying these effects involve modulation of signalling pathways such as NF-κB, MAPK, and AMPK. Despite promising results, the review identifies several gaps in the current knowledge, including the need for standardized dosing regimens and long-term safety assessments. Furthermore, variations in RJ composition due to geographic and botanical factors necessitate more rigorous quality control measures. This review underscores the potential of RJ as a multifunctional therapeutic agent and highlights the necessity for further well designed studies to fully elucidate its health benefits and optimize its use as a functional food supplement.

Abstract:The food and pharmaceutical industries have utilized royal jelly, an alternative medicinal food, as a natural pharmaceutical product since ancient times. Royal jelly has a unique remarkable composition containing lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, hormones, and phenolic compounds. The rapidly expanding functional food market has coincided with the increasing consumer demand for royal jelly. Over the past two decades, royal jelly, a rich source of certain bioactive components, has been used by humans as a functional and nutritious food due to recent studies of the effect of royal jelly in underlying pathogenic processes in a variety of animal models. Scientific evidence has accumulated supporting a wide variety of health-promoting effects from the intake of royal jelly that supports cardiovascular health, immune and antioxidant function, wound healing, blood lipid, and glucose control in addition to antibacterial and antihypertensive effects. The main bioactive ingredients are Major Royal Jelly Proteins (MRJPs), essential oils, fatty acids, peptides, and phenolics, which are thought to have a significant role in the development of honeybee queens. The health-endorsing qualities of royal jelly make it a significant functional ingredient in the food, and cosmetic industry. Apisin is one of the main proteins in royal jelly that has antibacterial properties. Other bioactive ingredients of royal jelly that have multifunctional health-promoting properties include defensin-1, royalisin, apisimin, apidaecin, jelleins, royalactin and 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10HDA) in epigenetic diseases. This review highlights the important role that royal jelly plays as an agent in various fields of medicine, paying special attention to its biological features. Additionally, we discuss royal jelly's composition as a possible therapeutic for vital natural sources of bioactive substances.

Abstract:Royal jelly is not only a natural health substance for human beings, but also a lucrative hive-product for beekeepers. Achieving a higher royal jelly yield is an important pursuit for beekeepers engaged in commercial royal jelly production. Since breeding a higher production royal jelly bee in the 1980s in China, royal jelly production has had a burgeoning growth. In this article, a special queen excluder and factory production method are introduced that will enable collection of up to 10 kilos of royal jelly per colony.
The Combining Ability and Heterosis Analysis of Royal Jelly Yield and Quality Properties in Western Honeybees

Abstract:The NC II mating design of 2 x 4 was made in order to evaluate The combining ability and heterosis of royal jelly yield and quality properties that included royal jelly yield, royal jelly yield per cup, acceptance ratio and acidity in Apis mellifera. The results were as follows: (1) For all characters, general combining ability in six parents (GCA) achieved highly significant level (P < 0.01), special combining ability (SCA) only significant (P < 0.05), therefore the additive effect is more important for royal jelly yield and quality properties; (2) The GCA of A. m. acervorum in four characters was higher, and the SCA variance of A. m. carpatica, A. m. caucasica was greater, so they were good parents. ZND-1 Apis mellifera lingustica in royal jelly yield, royal jelly yield per cup, acceptance ratio was an excellent parent, but A. m. carnica only could be used in increasing royal jelly quality; (3) The heterosis over high-parent is negative, thus it is difficult to improve royal jelly yield and quality by cross breeding, but by appropriate choice of parents, high yield and quality combination can be obtained.

Abstract:Royal jelly is a yellowish, creamy and acidic substance secreted by mandibular and hypopharyngeal glands of young worker bees. Fatty acids including (E)-10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, 10-hydroxydecanoic acid, 3,10-dihydroxydecanoic acid, 8-hydroxyoctanoic acid, sebacic acid and so on are one of the major components of royal jelly with a variety of biological activities, such as anti-inflammation, anti-bacteria and anti-tumor. Fatty acids are one of the main active components of royal jelly which are considered an important indicator in quality control. This article summarizes the identification methods of the royal jelly fatty acid including the principle of the method, the comparisons of technology and application features of methods, as well as the future research prospects. This review will provide a reference for the development of determining methods for fatty acids and pave the way for quality control of royal jelly.

Abstract:Royal jelly (RJ) is a milk-like secretion produced by honey bees that is used to nourish larvae in the honeycomb. It contains many nutrients, including proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, and minerals. Fatty acids from RJ are gaining popularity owing to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunoregulatory, and antibacterial properties. Solvent and Soxhlet extraction are the most commonly used methods for fatty acid extraction from RJ. Owing to the inherent limitations of these methods, the development of a rapid and efficient method for fatty acid extraction from RJ is challenging. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the chemical composition, extraction methods, and biological activities of RJ fatty acids to provide a theoretical basis for expanding the prospective applications of RJ in human health.
