Abstract:The High School English Curriculum Standard (2017 edition) states that it's crucial to cultivate core competences for students, which includes language ability, learning ability, cultural awareness and thinking quality. There is no doubt that critical thinking, as one of the key components of thinking quality, should be emphasized. However, due to the influence of examination-oriented education and other factors, most teachers tend to pay too much attention to the cultivation of students' language knowledge and language skills, neglecting the cultivation of students' critical thinking ability. The traditional mode of interpretation of language knowledge still dominates in most English reading teaching, teaching design tends to be modeled and text processing is so superficial that students can not understand the discourse deeply. Students in the classroom did not experience a deep thinking level of ability training. Therefore, teachers should think carefully about how to cultivate students’ critical thinking in high school English reading class and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. This paper will take the teaching design of a reading lesson as an example to explore how to cultivate students' critical thinking in high school reading class.

Abstract:Reading is not only one of the difficult problems for students, but also one of the most important teaching parts for teachers. 126 students in Xingfeng Jiudu Middle School were taken as the research objects, and their English reading learning was investigated by means of questionnaire survey, so as to find problems existing in junior English reading teaching. Based on the three characteristics of discourse reading: integrity, comprehensiveness and applicability, the paper analyzes junior English reading teaching strategies from the three aspects of pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading. The research shows that under the guidance of discourse reading theory, using the method of discourse reading teaching is beneficial to stimulate students' interest in reading and improve their reading ability. For English teachers, it is also a good way to improve teaching efficiency and reduce teaching pressure.

Abstract:"English Reading" is a professional compulsory course combining theory with practice. This course covers English language knowledge, culture and literature knowledge, national knowledge, cross-cultural communication knowledge, basic knowledge of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, etc., aiming to improve students' reading efficiency and ability to obtain main information, especially text appreciation, rhetoric and critical thinking ability. The task of the lesson is to cultivate students' ability of discourse analysis, semantic appreciation, logical thinking, independent thinking and proficient communication, so as to make them become "application-oriented talents” of high-quality and with innovative consciousness and creative ability". The study aimed to correlate the reading comprehension of English linguistic students, then inform some pedagogical implications for the teaching of reading comprehension (Cuc Thi Kim Pham, 2017). Through the data analysis of an authoritative reading test officially organized by the university, the author found that a large proportion of students in sophomore year failed to perform well in the test and did not demonstrate excellent reading skills. The reasons are as follows: firstly, the "teacher-led role" is neglected in reading teaching; Secondly, students ignore discourse analysis in reading; thirdly, the students' understanding of vocabulary is limited to the meaning of completely equivalent Chinese; Fourth: Grammatical awareness is not strong. The author finds out the problems that students have in reading, and combines relevant cases to conduct in-depth discussions on these issues.

Abstract:In this study, we explore the current situation of teaching college English reading in China and offer suggestions for improving it from the perspective of invitational rhetoric, mainly in terms of the three external conditions it advocates, safety, value and freedom, and its core, understanding. We distributed the questionnaire about the current situation of college English reading instruction to students majoring in English and analysed the results. Concerning the conditions of safety, the teachers respected students’ views, but the students were not confident and were unwilling to participate in teacher-student interaction; therefore, teachers should create a safe external environment so that students trust them. Concerning the conditions of value, teachers allowed students to fully express their perspectives, and they prepared and conducted classroom activities from the students’ standpoint. Regarding the conditions of freedom, students were selective in accepting teachers’ views and formulated their own views, but when their views differed from those of teachers, few presented their opinions; teachers must acknowledge their weaknesses at the right time so that students can realise disagreeing with teachers is not equal to offending them. Regarding the conditions of understanding, teachers no longer aimed to instill knowledge; they paid more attention to students’ understanding and encouraged them to form their own ideas while understanding students and accepting reasonable feedback.

Abstract:Under the background of post critical pedagogy, teachers should pay attachment to the awakening of students’ self-identity consciousness and the cultivation of critical thinking skills. The teaching model of writing course adopted by the author is as follows: firstly, the writing course is equipped with a dedicated reading manual. It is compiled to establish cultural reading materials which include 12 theme reading passages to introduce Chinese and American culture and 12 writing sharing to promote identity thinking based on the relevant theories of Constructivism and Output Hypothesis by using the Flesch Kincaid Readability Test. The teaching process emphasizes the integration of students’ vertical and horizontal knowledge. Referring to the Knowledge Transformation Model of Writing proposed by Bereiter and Scardamalia, the teaching model vertically emphasizes the integration of pre-class cultural reading, in-class skill training, and post-class thinking reinforcement; it horizontally emphasizes on the integration with reading courses, cultural courses, and speculative courses. Overall, the model stresses the cultivation of cross-cultural communication skills. It emphasizes understanding oneself and the other and stimulates students’ writing interest in cultural reading; it emphasizes that the other is for my own use and enrich students’ cultural illustrations in skill training; it emphasizes that I see the world and reflect on my own learning, life, and social hotpots in theme writing. In short, the author actively explores “playing” with learning, “stealing” with learning, and “using” in learning.

Abstract:: English reading is not only an important part in English teaching, but also an important English ability. There are various teaching methods about English reading teaching, but many of them haven’t embodied good effects which makes many students’ English reading in trouble. Nowadays, many scholars in English teaching advocate task-based teaching method. This method emphasizes English reading teaching and task in order to make students have purpose to read relevant articles. This paper intends to explore how to improve the quality of English reading teaching through Task-based teaching method. As an important part of English teaching, the main purpose of English reading teaching is to cultivate students' reading comprehension ability and cultivate students' understanding of English reading. But the current situation is that English reading teaching in middle school emphasizes more grammar points and word memory and neglects the cultivation of students' reading ability, which will formal a negative impact on students' English learning. As I just mentioned nowadays, more and more scholars advocate task-based teaching method, which can not only improve students' reading ability, but also help them master relevant reading strategies more effectively. Abstract:With a focus on fostering core competencies, nurturing students’ critical thinking has emerged as a crucial facet of English reading instruction. However, current English reading instruction in high schools tends to neglect the cultivation of critical thinking, leading to a widespread phenomenon of “absence of speculation” in teaching. Therefore, this study aims to explore effective strategies, including designing teaching objectives for critical thinking, utilizing visual aids, introducing cognitive level questioning, and implementing embedded evaluation for cultivating critical thinking in high school English reading instruction. The findings of the study provide insights for constructing a coherent framework for critical thinking teaching.

Abstract:Reading teaching is highly valued among the five major skills teaching, but traditional reading teaching still has some problems. At the same time, General Senior High School Curriculum Standards have put forward higher requirements for high school English reading teaching, requiring "high school English curriculum should emphasize the further development of students' comprehensive language proficiency, and focus on improving their ability to obtain information, process information, analyze problems, and solve problems in English; with special emphasis on improving students' ability to think and express themselves in English." Since the new curriculum reform advocates a student-centered teaching model, focusing on cultivating students' thinking abilities and optimizing their thinking qualities, the “Literature Circles” model has gradually become popular in middle school English classroom teaching. This model focuses on reading as the core, and through independent research and collaborative exploration, enables students to more effectively integrate their English language abilities. While improving English knowledge and skills, students' critical thinking abilities have also been trained and strengthened. The cultivation of critical thinking not only enhances students' ability to analyze and solve problems, but also provides an important foundation for students to distinguish right from wrong, correct erroneous knowledge, and innovate. Therefore, this article summarizes the current problems in English reading teaching, the concept, theoretical basis, advantages, development trends, and implementation processes and suggestions of “Literature Circles” teaching model, in order to bring new inspiration and ideas to English reading teaching.
A Study of Embodied-Cognitive Teaching Approach to Teach English Reading in College

Abstract:English Reading plays an important role in English learning. Hence, improving the learners' English reading ability is one of the key issues for English teachers in colleges. This study conducts an experiment on teaching English Reading for the freshmen of E-Commerce major in a higher vocational college, in which the experimental group adopts the Embodied-Cognitive Teaching approach and the control group the traditional teaching approach. In order to ensure the reliability of the study, the data of the two groups of learners are obtained and recorded from the teaching platform. With the help of SPSS Statistic analysis software, the study finds that there is no significant difference in the scores of the instant intensive reading test and the instant vocabulary test between the experimental group and the control group. But there is significant difference in the scores of the instant extensive test and after-class vocabulary tests between the two groups; the experimental group performs better than the control group on the aspects of conceptual understanding and word decoding skills, which shows that Embodied-Cognitive teaching approach helps to improve the learners' reading ability and is one of the new and effective ways for teaching English Reading in Chinese colleges.

Abstract:The traditional college English intensive reading class is mostly taught by teachers, students are passive learners, and the learning atmosphere is serious and the study is inefficient, which cannot meet the high requirements of modern society for the practical knowledge and ability of contemporary college students. The traditional class education mode should now been changed. In English intensive reading class, students show negative participation or even non-participation, so the teacher has become the master of English class teaching. The communication between students and teachers in speech, behavior and emotion is not ideal, therefore, on the basis of the inability to interact, teaching becomes more boring, students are more reluctant to participate in it. To solve this problem, the author tries to analyze the internal factors that influence students’ effective participation in intensive reading class, and external factors affecting students’ effectiveness. The effective participation strategies are put forward.
