Abstract:In this paper, we study a single-species population model with pulse toxicant input to a small polluted environment. The intrinsic rate of population is affected by environment and toxin in organisms. The toxin in organisms is influenced by toxin in environment and the food chain. A new mathematical model is derived. By the Pulse Compare Theorem, we find the surviving threshold of the population and obtain the sufficient conditions of persistence and extinction of the population.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a periodic competitive stage-structured Lotka–Volterra model with the effects of toxic substances. It is shown that toxic substances play an important role in the extinction of species. We obtain a set of sufficient conditions which guarantee that one of the components is driven to extinction while the other is globally attractive. The numerical simulation of an example verifies our main results.

Abstract:In its simplest form, the chemostat consists of several populations of microorganisms competing for a single limiting nutrient. If the input concentration of nutrient and the washout rate are constant, theory predicts and experiment confirms that at most one of the populations will survive. In nature, however, one may expect the input concentration and washout rate to vary with time. In this paper we consider a model for the chemostat with periodic washout rate. Conditions are found for competitive exclusion to hold, and bifurcation techniques are employed to show that under suitable circumstances there will be coexistence of the competing populations in the form of positive periodic solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic delay differential equations chemostat model with nonmonotone uptake function is considered, and the nutrient conversion process involves time delay. First, we verify that there is a unique global positive solution of the stochastic system. Second, we find that the solutions of stochastic system will oscillate around the equilibria of the corresponding deterministic model, moreover, results show that time delay has critical effects on the extinction and persistence of the microorganism, that is to say, under small noise, when the time delay is small, microorganism is persistent; when the time delay is large, microorganism will be extinct. In addition, we can find by the computer simulation that large noise may lead to microorganism become extinct, although microorganism is persistent in the deterministic systems when the time delay is small. Finally, computer simulations are carried out to illustrate the obtained results and the existence of bistability is observed.

Abstract:International Journal of Biomathematics, Ahead of Print. We propose single-species population models with the psychological effects and time delay in a toxicant environment in this study, of which the concentrations of toxicant nonlinearly affect the density of adults, linearly affect the density of juveniles. The models, consisting of a system of stochastic differential equations, govern the dynamics of juveniles and adults, as well as the concentrations of toxicant in the environment and organisms. First of all, the existence and uniqueness of the global solution to the models are derived, the sufficient conditions of the extinction and the time that the densities of adults and juveniles approach zero are investigated. Further, the sufficient conditions for the weak persistence in the mean are obtained around the pollution-free equilibrium point, and the stochastic permanence of adults and juveniles occurs around the pollution equilibrium points under moderate conditions. As a consequence, the corresponding numerical simulations reveal that higher psychological effects and less time delay create larger densities of juveniles and adults in the sense of weak persistence and stochastic permanence, and that less fluctuations of white noises and less psychological effects produce the earlier extinction time for adults and juveniles.

Abstract:Thresholds for extinction and persistence are important for assessing the risk of mortality in systems exposed to toxicant. In this paper, three single-species models with random perturbation in a polluted environment are proposed and investigated. One is the generalized logistic model and the other two are the stochastic resource–consumer models of Leslie and Gallopin. For each model, the survival threshold is obtained in some cases. In general, each threshold is determined by intensity of the random noise, the mean stress measure in organisms, the population intrinsic growth rate and the stress response rate.

Abstract:In this paper, we study some general models suggested to describe the effects of chemical compounds produced by an algal population on its survival in a chemostat-like environment. The conditions for its persistence and extinction are found. In particular, in the first model we make very general assumptions to represent the uptake, the regulative and the inhibiting functions, and analyze its global stability completely. In the second one we specify the first two functions and leave general the third one. Here the regulative function has different property from that in the first model, and a saddle-node bifurcation phenomenon occurs. In addition, according to the experimental data reported in DellaGreca et al. [2010. Fatty acids released by Clorella vulgaris and their role in interference with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata: experiments and modelling. J. Chem. Ecol. 36, 339-349], we present a further model in which a new inhibiting function gives rise to a complex dynamics. The three models exhibit different dynamical behaviors, in particular the number of positive equilibria associated with each model varies resulting one, two and three, respectively. We also point out that the main differences exhibited by these models result from different specializations of the regulative and the inhibiting functions.

Abstract:This paper deals with a diffusive population-toxicant model in polluted aquatic environments, with a toxicant-taxis term describing a toxicant-induced behavior change, that is, the population tends to move away from locations with high-level toxicants. The global existence of solutions is established by the techniques of the semigroup estimation and Moser iteration. Based on a detailed study on the properties of the principal eigenvalue for non-self-adjoint eigenvalue problems, we investigated the local and global stability of the toxin-only steady-state solution and the existence of positive steady state, which yields sufficient conditions that lead to population persistence or extinction. Finally, by numerical simulations, we studied the effects of some key parameters, such as toxicant-taxis coefficient, advection rate, and effect coefficient of the toxicant on population growth, on population persistence. Both numerical and analytical results show that a weak chemotaxis effect, a small advection rate of the population, and a weak effect of the toxicant on population growth are favorable for population persistence.

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of the single-species stochastic chemostat model.In this model,we assume that the nutrient input concentration and the nutrition conversion rate are influenced by white noises.The global existence and uniqueness of the positive solution of the system are proved by using stochastic comparison theorem.By constructing stochastic Lyapunov function,using It(o)'s formula and some theorems of stochastic differential equation,we show the persistence of the system and the extinction of the microorganism.Finally,numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a stochastic delayed chemostat model with nutrient storage is proposed and investigated. First, we state that there is a unique global positive solution for this stochastic system. Second, using the classical approach of Lyapunov function analysis, this stochastic delayed chemostat model is discussed in detail. We establish some sufficient conditions for the extinction of the microorganism, furthermore, we prove that the microorganism will become persistent in the mean in the chemostat under some conditions. Finally, the obtained results are illustrated by computer simulations, and simulation results reveal the effects of time delay on the persistence and extinction of the microorganism.

Abstract:Based on the fact that the continuous culture of microorganisms in a chemostat is subject to environmental noises, we present and analyze a stochastic competition chemostat model with general monotonic response functions and differential removal rates. The existence and boundedness of the unique positive solution are first obtained. By defining a stochastic break-even concentration for every species, we prove that at most one competitor survives in the chemostat and the winner has the smallest stochastic break-even concentration, provided its response function satisfies a technical assumption. That is to say, the competitive exclusion principle holds for the stochastic competition chemostat model. Furthermore, we find that the noise experienced by one species is adverse to its growth while may be favorable for the growth of other one species. Namely, the destinies can be exchanged between two microorganism species in the chemostat due to the environmental noise.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic behaviors of a Monod type chemostat model with impulsive perturbation are investigated. Using Floquet theory and small amplitude perturbation method, we prove that the microorganism-eradication periodic solution is asymptotically stable if the impulsive period satisfies some conditions. Moreover, the permanence of the system is discussed in detail. Finally, we verify the main results by numerical simulation.

Abstract:This paper proposed a stochastic toxin-dependent competition model to investigate the impact of environmental noise on species interaction dynamics. First, a survival analysis was conducted to establish the sufficient conditions for population extinction and persistence. Second, we proved the existence of a unique ergodic stationary distribution. Finally, the spatial arrangement of random states near the deterministic attractor was investigated using the stochastic sensitivity functions technique. This analytical approach facilitates constructing confidence ellipses and estimating critical noise intensity corresponding to the onset of transition. Both theoretical and numerical findings demonstrated that significant levels of noise experienced by one species lead to its extinction while promoting persistence in its competitor; conversely, negligible levels of noise did not alter the original competition outcomes in the deterministic model. However, when both species encounter moderate levels of noise, various modifications can occur in competition outcomes. These findings have significant implications for preserving ecosystem diversity.

First, we verify that there is a unique global positive solution for any given initial conditions for this stochastic delayed system. Second, we give the dynamical behavior of the solution of stochastic delay system around the washout equilibrium of deterministic system; moreover, we discuss the competition exclusion and coexistence of microorganisms x_1 and x_2 . Finally, computer simulations are carried out to illustrate the obtained results; in addition, results show that time delay has critical effects on the survival of the microorganisms.

Abstract:A mathematical model is designed to examine plant growth under stress in the presence of toxicity with a delay. It is observed that toxic substances change the soil's structure and activity, which has a negative impact on the concentration of nutrients there. The availability of soil nutrients is one of the most significant elements affecting biomass. Total biomass is seen to be adversely affected by both nutrition deficiency and toxicity. It has been noted that the presence of toxicity changes the physiology and growth of the plant, which ultimately reduces crop growth and production. This adverse effect of toxicity is not seen immediately, but after an incubation period. This effect is demonstrated by taking into account the delay in the state variable. Additionally, Hopf bifurcation is observed for the crucial value of the delay parameter. Utilizing explicit techniques, the direction and stability of bifurcating periodic solutions are found. Sensitivity analysis is used to determine the sensitivity of solutions of the model when values of parameters are varied. MATLAB is used for simulation.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of telegraph noise on coexistence of multi-microorganisms, we propose a multi-species chemostat model with Markov switchings. First, we investigate the basic dynamic properties of the model and its subsystem. Then, we establish sufficient criteria for the coexistence of the model. Finally, the coexistence of multi-microorganisms with the same break-even concentrations for every state is verified, which expands the theory of coexistence for the corresponding deterministic model. The results indicate that telegraph noise is conducive to the coexistence of multi-microorganisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a nonautonomous discrete Lotka-Volterra system of two species with the effect of toxic substances. We prove that one of the components will be driven to extinction while the other will be globally attractive with any positive solution of a discrete logistic equation under some conditions. For periodic case, we also obtain another set of sufficient conditions which guarantee the extinction and the existence of a globally stable periodic solution. Abstract:In this paper, we formulate a classical stochastic delayed chemostat model and verify that this model has a unique global positive solution. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamical behavior of this solution. Abstract:In the present paper, a novel stochastic food chain chemostat model with Monod-Haldane functional response is proposed and studied, incorporating the mean-reversion Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process to simulate stochastic perturbation on the growth of microorganisms by environmental fluctuations. Firstly, the existence and uniqueness of the global positive solution are proved, and the stochastic boundedness of the solution is obtained. Secondly, the conditions for controlling exponential extinction and persistence in the mean of microorganisms are delved. Finally, a large number of representative numerical examples are provided to validate the theoretical results. The results show that the stochastic noise measured by the regression speed and the fluctuation intensity has significant effects on the dynamics of the model.
