Abstract:The Finite Particle Method(FPM) is a structural analysis method based on the Vector Mechanics.The FPM discretizes the analyzed domain intio finite particles,and its basic idea is to simulate the motion behavior of structural particles.It has been proven that the FPM is very powerful in the analysis of structural complicated behaviors.This paper presents the structural impact analysis using the FPM.According to the discretized structural models,the contact detecting method and the impact models are proposed.The formulations of the impact force between the impact elements are derived to calculate the impact reaction.The internal forces and displacement of particles connected to the impact elements are modified correspondingly.The program based on the FPM is also developed to analyze structural impact behaviors.Two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of this method in the impact analysis.

Abstract:Damage assessment of a small-weight precision-guided warhead to evaluate the effect on the performance of high-value vulnerable targets should focus on functional damage instead of physical damage. Developing a damage assessment model that considers target function attenuation as a damage criterion for warhead design and tactical application is of great significance. In this paper, an accurate mathematical description of a preformed fragment warhead is provided. The failure of phased-array antenna elements in different initiation conditions is predicted by a shot-line model and spatial coordinate mapping. A real-time co-simulation model of the explosion damage field and the phased-array antenna electrical performance is developed and the effective damage modes are obtained through multi-condition simulation and electrical performance parameters analysis, which has more tactical application value than the structural damage assessment method with equivalent targets and the electrical simulation in artificial or random phrased-array-element failure conditions.

Abstract:In order to scientifically evaluate the target damage effectiveness when warhead fragments formed by projectile explosion attack targets, this paper proposes a new method by using the multi-layer warhead fragments distribution division mechanism to study an evaluation and calculation model of target damage effectiveness under uncertain information of warhead fragments. On the basis of the spatial relationship between projectile explosion position and target, we first analyze the target damage rules based on the target's own vulnerability characteristics. Then we use the fuzzy prior probability theory to establish the membership function of the target damage factor and an evaluation model of the target damage grade, and use the stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis method to obtain the evaluation index value of the target damage level. Finally, considering the ratio between the effective area of the warhead fragment group attacking target and the area of target itself and the effective number and area ratio of warhead fragments penetrating target, we give a numerical calculation method of target damage effectiveness. Through simulation and calculation, the results show that when the distance between the projectile explosion position and the target is less than 7 m and the coordinate interval of the projectile flight direction is −2.5 m to 2.5 m, the damage probability of warhead fragments to the target is greater than 75%. When the weight of the damage factor of the target changes, the damage effectiveness of the target also changes, and this result is in accordance with the actual experiment, which verifies the rationality of the proposed mathematical model.

Abstract:In order to meet the design need of focuses fragment warhead,the damaging evaluation of focuses fragment warhead against battleplane target is researched in this paper.Through analyses the vulnerability of the battleplane target,developing the target damage model,takes the damage probability of one missile as index,the evaluation model of the damage effect for focuses fragment against battleplane target warhead is established by Monte Carlo method.Through analyses the simulation result,the law that kill probability of one missile enhance with the increase of velocity of missile beyond target and the reduce of CEP and fuze startup time,this is consistent with theoretics.

Abstract:The dispersion distribution characteristics of prefabricated fragments from an improvised explosive device (IED) are essential in defense technology development. To improve warhead design, it is essential to predict a fragment’s velocity and dispersion distribution accurately. This paper investigates a fragment’s flying angle from a detonated warhead with a cylindrical charge under a one-end central detonation. A modified formula for calculating the fragment dispersion distribution at each axial position of the warhead was obtained based on experimental data and model analysis. The impacts of the following parameters on the flying angle were considered in the formula: ratio of charge mass to shell mass, charge diameter, axial sparse effect, and relative axial shell position. The formula was verified by experimentation to be suitable for wide applications using different validation samples. Theoretical calculations with the formula show good accuracy in predicting the flying angle of cylindrical-shell fragments, agreeing with experimental data. The proposed model meets the error requirements of engineering applications. This work provides a theoretical foundation for subsequent research on damage effectiveness and IED damage assessment.
Research on the Effect of Inner Lining on Fragment Scattering Characteristics of Fragmentation Warhead

Abstract:In order to improve the axial fragments killing power of fragmentation warhead, based on the Shapiro formula, a design method of the lining curve of the fragmentation warhead was proposed, and the fragmentation warhead was designed with a fragment scattering angle of 5° and 9° by using this method. Using LS-DYNA software and ALE algorithm, the numerical simulation calculation of fragment scattering process was carried out, and the static explosion test of the warhead prototype was carried out to verify the rationality of the lining curve design method. The influence of the shape and thickness of the inner lining curve on the scattering characteristics of the fragments is analyzed. The results show that the error value between the experimental value and the simulated value of the scattering angle and the theoretical design value is within 8%; the smaller the design value of the fragment scattering angle, the greater the curvature of the lining curve, and the smaller the initial scattering speed of the fragment; When the thickness of the inner lining is appropriately increased, the initial scattering speed of the fragments increases, and the scattering angle of the fragments decreases.
Effect Of Warhead Shell Thickness On Fragments' Formation And Penetration Performance

Abstract:To analyze fragments formation situations of warhead shells different in thickness under high power explosive charge, this paper made numerical simulation of the effect of warhead shell thickness on fragments formation by the application of fragmentation warhead design software and AUTODYN-3D finite element software and did research on fragments' mass distribution, maximum initial velocity and penetration ability in real detonation environment by experiments. With the increase of warhead shell thickness, the total quantity of 50SiMnVB steel shell forming fragments decreases under high power explosive charge while the quantity of significant fragments whose mass over 1g increases. The change laws of initial velocity along warhead axis of different thickness shells forming fragments are accordant that the minimum initial velocity appears where approaching the initiation point and the maximum initial velocity appears where about 60% cylinder length away from the initiation point. Fragments' maximum initial velocity and shell thickness are negatively correlated. With the warhead shell thickness increasing from 5mm to 8mm, fragments' total number decreases by 39.1% and the significant fragments' quantity increases by 25.5%. Fragments' maximum initial velocity decreases by 27.9%. The quantity of fragments hitting target in per unit area decreases by 36.6% while its penetration probability increases obviously, reaching to 46.2%. In other words, the fragments' penetration ability is enhanced significantly.

Abstract:To improve the damage ability of the hollow-charge warhead, and the utilization of the dynamite, added the prefabricated fragments at the circumferential of the shaped warhead, used the finite element software to calculate the influence of different prefabricated fragments, different shell structure on warhead's EFP and fragments performance, and also the penetration capability of them. The results show that: the performance of the damage elements formed by this anti-armor composite warhead are very well, it can damage the armored vehicles, ships and other targets, the sphere fragment can penetrate 12mm thick armor steel in 60m, and damage personnel in the 240m, EFP can penetrate the armor steel more than 0.5 times of the charge's diameter, this research can provide reference for the further research on multi-using warhead.

Abstract:To address the difficulty in evaluating the damage effect of missile target attacked by fragmented warheads, this paper proposes a new damage assessment method. In this paper, the damage to the missile target is regarded as the result of the continuous action of multiple layers of warhead fragments at multiple times. Based on this damage mechanism, sample data is formed using the characteristic parameters of warhead fragments, by introducing intuitionistic fuzzy neural network (IFNN), a new missile target damage effect evaluation model based on IFNN is established. Finally, training and testing are conducted on the data of actual missile target intersection damage tests, and the results are compared with other target damage evaluation methods. The results show that this evaluation method can effectively obtain the damage value of the missile target, and the evaluation model has good generalization ability. This provides ideas for developing a new method to evaluate the static or dynamic damage effectiveness of intelligent ammunition.

Abstract:The scattering of fragments is a notable characteristic of the explosive detonation of a shelled charge. This study examines the fracture and fragmentation of the shell and the process by which natural fragments form under the strains of implosion. The analysis takes into account both the explosive's energy output and the casing's dynamic response. For this purpose, utilizing a thermochemical code as an alternative to the conventionally employed cylinder test, the Jones–Wilkins–Lee equation of state (JWL EOS) was calibrated within a range of relative specific volume up to 13. The detonation of the shelled charge was subsequently analyzed using the continuum–discontinuum element method (CDEM). Following this, the formation mechanisms and scattering characteristics of natural fragments were scrutinized. The analysis found that the shell predominantly experiences shear failure with uniform evolution, displaying a "hysteresis effect" and two mutation stages in the evolution of tensile failure. Within the JWL EOS's calibrated range, the representation of fragment displacement and velocity improved by 47.97% and 5.30%, respectively. This study provides valuable guidance for designing the power field of warheads and assessing their destructive power.

Expansion And Fracture Of Fragmenting Warhead Shells Of Various Materials Under A Cl-20 Explosive Charge

Abstract:To study the effect of the warhead material characteristics upon warhead expansion and fracture and upon the formation of fragments under a high-power explosive charge, four different warhead materials; 30CrMnSiNi2A steel, 40CrMnSiB steel, 50SiMnVB steel and 82 steel; are examined. This paper builds a analytical modeling to theoretically analyze the expansion and fracture processes for the different material warheads. In addition, the AUTODYN-3D finite element software is used to numerically simulate the expansion and fracture processes of the four materials, and high-speed photography technology and a tinfoil target velocity test system are used to verify the simulation results. It is found that, for the "phi 62mm" aperture warhead under the explosive CL-20 charge, the expansion and fracture processes of the four materials all require similar to 60 mu s, and the shell expansion velocity in the whole process can be divided into three stages called libration, acceleration and stabilized. The initial velocities of the fragments along the warhead axis for the different warhead materials are consistent with each other, though the expansion velocity and the maximum initial velocity of the fragments are largest for the 30CrMnSiNi2A steel warhead. It is found that the warhead expansion velocity and the initial velocity of the fragments decrease gradually as the ultimate tensile strength of the warhead material decreases and as its dynamic fracture toughness increases. This study introduces the coefficient of radial warhead expansion and acquires the function for the distance of the radial warhead expansion over time, which is influenced by the warhead material characteristics. The results of this study will provide a reference for fragmenting warhead shell material selection and design.

Abstract:To scientifically evaluate the damage effectiveness of a projectile explosion on the equivalent target, this article studies a warhead fragment distribution parameters’ measurement method based on a six-screen-sensors’ intersection test system; establishes a parameter calculation model of the warhead fragment hitting the equivalent target, the time and space constraints’ discriminant model of six infrared detection screens, and the time-value-matching model of multiple warhead fragments; and gives the calculation of the specific fragment distribution position and the time-matching algorithm of each infrared detection screen. According to the obtained warhead fragment parameters, a calculation method of the damage probability of equivalent target is constructed. Through experiments and analysis, it is verified that the established warhead fragment parameter measurement method and the damage probability model of the equivalent target are scientific.

Abstract:To analyze the safety of energetic devices under insult of impact, the method of determining the critical impact velocity of energetic devices was proposed. The method based on the formation mechanism of hot spot of energetic materials under insult of impact load, combined the hot spot micro structure model of energetic materials and deformation analysis of energetic devices, analyzed and calculated the impact deformation of energetic devices and the hot spot formation and development process of its inner charge. Finally, by determining whether there are high temperature hot spots inside the charge, we determined the critical impact velocity to achieve the purpose of the safety analysis of energetic devices under insult of impact. The tests that the Steven impact test on the black powder inside the detonation power unit of the emergency escape system and the impact test on the detonation power unit, was analyzed and calculated, and compared with the test results, verify the theoretical model and computational method are correct and effective.

Abstract:For the air-to-air missile warhead, there is a cabin with a certain thickness at a distance around the fragments. At present, the influence of missile cabin has not yet been taken into account in the study of fragment velocity. In this paper, based on the law of conservation of energy, the theoretical equation of fragment velocity considering the kinetic energy of cabin debris was deduced. Then, the rationality of the theoretical formula is validated through the static explosion experiments of two prototype warheads, one with a titanium alloy cabin and the other without any cabin. It was found that after the warhead is equipped with the cabin, part of the energy is consumed to drive the cabin debris, resulting in a decrease in fragment velocity, but the velocity of cabin debris was greater than that of fragment of warheads without any cabin. Besides, through numerical simulation, the driving process of fragments and cabin debris during explosive detonation loading of the warhead with the cabin was studied, which can be divided into six stages, and the error between numerical result and experimental value is not more than 4.8%. Finally, the variety regulation of fragment velocity and cabin debris velocity at different interval distances was further studied by numerical simulation. The results indicate that fragment velocity of warheads with cabin at different interval distances is basically the same, but cabin debris velocity decreases with the increase of interval distance. This conclusion can provide a reference for the structural design and fragment velocity evaluation of warheads with cabin.

Abstract:In the military and chemical industry, modeling the fragmentation hazard field is of great significance in conducting the fatality risk assessment and calculating the safety distance for person. Although the ballistic methodology achieves the simulation of fragmentation flight trajectory, the acquisition of accurate initial projection data of fragmentation is a challenge. By coupling continuum-discontinuum element method and particle discrete element method, the fragmentation power algorithm is established, which achieves the integrated simulation of the initial projection data of fragmentation and the flight process of fragmentation. First, continuum-discontinuum element method is adopted to simulate the detonation products-driven fragmentation acceleration process by introducing the explosive detonation model, which achieves the acquisition of initial projection data of fragmentation. Then, the particle discrete element method is adopted to simulate the flight trajectory and power data of fragmentation. Based on the numerical and experimental result, the accuracy of fragmentation power algorithm is verified. In conjunction with the personal vulnerability model, a systematic numerical simulation framework is established to conduct the simulation-based personal fatality risk assessment when the metal-cased munition detonates accidentally, and the results indicate that the personal fatality risk due to the fragmentation becomes severer with the increase of munition curvature.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of hard-soft material interaction under impact loading is important not only in the defense industry but also in daily life. However, traditional mesh-based spatial discretization methods that are time consuming owing to the need for frequent re-meshing, such as the finite element method and finite difference method, can hardly handle large deformation involving failure evolution in a multi-phase interaction environment. The objective of this research is to develop a quasi-meshless particle method based on the material point method for the model-based simulation of the hard-soft material interaction response. To demonstrate the proposed procedure, scenarios of a hard-soft material impact test are considered, where a force is applied to layers of materials and a hard bar with an initial velocity impacts a target with layers of different materials. The stress wave propagation and resulting failure evolution are simulated and compared with available data. Future research tasks are then discussed on the basis of the preliminary results.

Abstract:The investigation of the fragmentation properties along the axis of a metal shell under explosive loading is valuable for understanding the fragment formation principles of a warhead. To investigate the axial fragmentation distribution of a metal shell, herein the fragmentation from different axial positions of a metal shell under single-end detonation conditions was analyzed based on the microelement method. Moreover, a corresponding simplified model for the average fragment mass was established. The fragment distribution characteristics at different axial positions and the internal features from the metal shell fragmentation was analyzed by designing an experiment for fragment segmented recovery and fragment perforation occurring in the fragmentation of a 1045 metal steel cylinder shell filled internally with 8701 high explosives. The similarity between the fragment perforation contour and the projected contour of fragments was applied to verify the accuracy of the simplified model of the fragmentation along the axial direction, which can provide an important reference for the design of warheads and the performance of protective architecture.
Numerical Simulation of Effect of Initiation Position on Directed Performance of Warhead Fragment

Abstract:In order to investigate the influence of different initiation positions on the directed performance of fragments,the numerical simulation for an assumed directed fragment warhead was conducted by using ANSYS/ LS DYNA in this paper. The numbers, average velocity and kinetic energy of fragments as well as their enhancements in directed area in different initiation positions were obtained. The influence of different initiation positions on the directed performance of fragments was analyzed. A preferable initiation position,which was easy to achieve in engineering,was proposed.

Abstract:Dynamic spatial distribution and killing characteristics of warhead fragments are important topics in the field of weapon effectiveness and protection. However, there is little research on the fragment distribution formed by continuous dynamic attacks of multiple projectiles that explode above the ground. This study analyzes spatial distributions of warhead fragments using witness boards in a rectangular target test. The results show that the fragment distribution of multiple projectiles in continuous dynamic attacks demonstrates a spatial superposition characteristic. The superimposed distribution is the sum of the distributions of two independent fragment distributions. The distribution characteristics are consistent with fragment scattering behavior. Therefore, they can be used to analyze the killing effects of multiple projectiles conveniently. The effects of falling speed, falling angle, and explosion height on the damage range of fragments were explored by a fragment spatial distribution model obtained from experiments. Analysis indicates that the prefabricated fragment distribution conformed to a spatial superposition relationship under dynamic multiprojectile continuous attacks, and the superposition obeyed fragment scattering characteristics. As the projectile falling angle increased at the explosion center, or as the falling height decreased, the positive pressure duration increased gradually. The falling speed had the greatest impact on the specific impulse of overpressure. The falling angle had the greatest impact on the peak value of overpressure. Both the falling angle and the explosion height had the greatest impact on the positive pressure acting time.

Abstract:Limited initiation energy or external stimulation may cause incomplete detonation in a warhead. At present, there is no quantitative method to characterize the energy release of a warhead charge for incomplete detonation such as explosion and deflagration. We propose a method based on average fragment quality to characterize the energy released by a warhead charge. The theoretical study shows that the average fragment quality after warhead initiation is inversely proportional to the initial fragment velocity. The relationship between the average fragment quality and explosive energy release is established and verified by experiment. This relation can be used to determine the charge energy released after warhead initiation. It provides a theoretical basis for optimizing efficiency of charge energy use in high-energy conventional damage technology and warhead design, and provides a quantitative method for evaluating insensitive ammunition.
