Abstract:With the decrease in the total electricity consumption growth rate,how to improve the efficiency of the transmission network without violating the safety constraints has become an important concern in the planning and operation of power grid.For this reason,an evaluation method for transmission grid efficiency considering the accident probability,based on the No.599 order issued by the State Council,is proposed.This method calculates the accident probability using the cascading failure model,which takes the actual power system characteristics into account to guide the planning and operation of power grid.Meanwhile,it has avoided the defect that actual statistical data gathered from grids with different features cannot be used for horizontal comparison directly.A regional power grid in Hubei Province is selected to verify the effectiveness of the evaluation method,and the factors affecting the efficiency increment of the transmission network are discussed.

Abstract:Highly interconnected power grid is developing more and more complex. Cascading failure in such complex power grid, which can be triggered by some disturbances, will have global catastrophic effects over the entire networks. So the research on cascading failure of complex power grid is of significant concern. The foundation of such research is the modeling. In this paper, the mechanism of cascading failure in power grid is firstly explained. Then respectively from the point of view in artificial power system and complex network, several existing models are introduced and commented. And some feasible methods, which should be paid more attention to in the future, in order to prevent and control cascading failure are also analyzed and discussed. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:Considering key information of power grid,such as topology,running state,distribution of power source and load,line flow limit,a new method to identify vulnerable transmission lines was proposed based on relative probability and consequence of line outage.Firstly,comprehensive load rate of unit entropy was defined to represent power grid vulnerability.Change of this index after a line outage was modified by node importance,which measured the consequence of line outage.Hypertext-Induced Topic Search (HITS) algorithm,widely used in web page rank,was modified to evaluate the node importance of power grid.Secondly,relative probability of line outage was calculated considering line failure rate and relative probability of line flow off-limit caused by random fluctuation of loads.Lastly,the specific evaluation process for identifying vulnerable transmission lines was given.Case study of IEEE 39 power system validates that the proposed method is reasonable and efficient.

Abstract:The accuracy of power system reliability evaluation based on the evaluation of component reliability is one of the key factors for improving secure operation of power systems.The calculation of component reliability,in turn,is the foundation for system reliability evaluation.The classical statistical model of component reliability cannot characterize the component's real-time state,while some new models that take power flow,voltage,weather and other operating conditions into consideration may experience difficulty in obtaining the actual data.This paper presents two practical models for predicting operating reliability of transmissions,the grey prediction and supporting vector machine regression models,both taking the operating time,lightning density and polluting parameters into account.Test results based on the historical operating data on the 500 kV transmission system of East China Grid show that the models proposed can fairly accurately reflect the components' operating state in reliability evaluation.
Transmission Benefits and Cost Allocation under Ambiguity

Abstract:Disputes over cost allocation can present a significant barrier to investment in shared infrastructure. While it may be desirable to allocate cost in a way that corresponds to expected benefits, investments in long-lived projects are made under conditions of substantial uncertainty. In the context of electricity transmission, uncertainty combined with the inherent complexity of power systems analysis prevents the calculation of an estimated distribution of benefits that is agreeable to all participants. To analyze aspects of the cost allocation problem, we construct a model for transmission and generation expansion planning under uncertainty, enabling the identification of transmission investments as well as the calculation of benefits for users of the network. Numerical tests confirm the potential for realized benefits at the participant level to differ significantly from ex ante estimates. Based on the model and numerical tests we discuss several issues, including 1) establishing a valid counterfactual against which to measure benefits, 2) allocating cost to new and incumbent generators vs. solely allocating to loads, 3) calculating benefits at the portfolio vs. the individual project level, 4) identifying losers in a surplus-enhancing transmission expansion, and 5) quantifying the divergence between cost allocation decisions made ex ante and benefits realized ex post.

Abstract:In recent years, the ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission system has been developed rapidly for its significant long-distance, high-capacity and low-loss properties. Equipment failures and overall outages of the UHVDC system have increasingly vital influence on the power supply of the receiving end grid. To improve the reliability level of UHVDC systems, a quantitative selection and configuration approach of redundant structures is proposed in this paper, which is based on multi-state reliability equivalence. Specifically, considering the symmetry characteristic of an UHVDC system, a state space model is established as a monopole rather than a bipole, which effectively reduces the state space dimensions to be considered by deducing the reliability merging operator of two poles. Considering the standby effect of AC filters and the recovery effect of converter units, the number of available converter units and corresponding probability are expressed with in universal generating function (UGF) form. Then, a sensitivity analysis is performed to quantify the impact of component reliability parameters on system reliability and determine the most specific devices that should be configured in the redundant structure. Finally, a cost-benefit analysis is utilized to help determine the optimal scheme of redundant devices. Case studies are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. Based on the numerical results, configuring a set of redundant transformers is indicated to be of the greatest significance to improve the reliability level of UHVDC transmission systems.

Abstract:Evaluation method of circuit-based reliability statistics can reflect system structure problem in certain extent and together with equipment reliability statistical can make more objective comprehensive on the statistical evaluation of transmission system reliability.Firstly,the definition of the circuit and determination method and the statistical evaluation index system which was based on the circuit and statistical calculation formula of concrete targets were proposed.Finally,the example shows that the statistical evaluation method proposed in this paper can reflect the transmission system grid construct influence of the reliability,thus provide more referential information for the transmission system planning and the operation management departments.
The Fast Reliability Evaluation Method in Transmission Grid Expansion Project Based on Power Flow Tracing and Ward Equivalent Method

Abstract:The computational complexity of bulk power system reliability evaluation has become the main obstacle for its application in actual projects. Considering the limit influence of transmission grid expansion project to the whole system, this paper proposes a fast reliability evaluation method based on power flow tracing and ward equivalent method. The power flow tracing method is applied to select the small region that influenced significantly by the new project, while the ward equivalent method is used to solve the equality problem in the boundary of the small region. A modified load shedding model is proposed for the reliability evaluation of the selected grid. Finally, the method proposed in this paper is applied in a provincial power grid in China. The case studies indicate that the method can effectively select the influenced region by the new projects. The effect of boundary equivalent by Ward method is satisfied. By comparing the reliability evaluation results between the equivalent power grid and the whole grid, it can be seen that the computational accuracy is high and the computation speed is fast.
An Efficient Reliability Evaluation Method for Distribution System with Transmission Capacity Constraints

Abstract:On the basis of minimal path a reliability equivalent calculation with equivalence recursion is proposed.According to distance between load points and root node of feeders,the proposed method performs layer sorting for them,and based on layer-numbers of the nodes where loads locate their reliability indices are stepwise calculated.During the calculation of reliability of load points in each layer,the reliability equivalent circuit of all equipments located in this layer and upper layers is calculated and is used by following calculation procedures.Moreover,a concise Newton power flow calculation method using constant Jacobian matrix that is applied to radial power network is proposed to calculate the impact of transmission capacity on reliability of distribution system.Based on factorization method the network topology of radial power network and the topology of factor graph are analyzed and it is proved that they two topologies are the same,on this basis a Newton power flow algorithm that possesses similar program to branch-oriented forward/backward sweep algorithm is developed.This algorithm is easy to be programmed and implemented and converges as fast as traditional Newton method.Case study results show that the proposed reliability evaluation algorithm is efficient.

Abstract:This paper discusses a number of probability models for multiple transmission line outages in power systems, including generalized Poisson model, negative binomial model, and exponentially accelerated model. These models are applied to the multiple transmission outage data for a 20-year period for North America. The probabilities of the propagation of transmission cascading outage are calculated. These probability magnitudes can serve as indexes for long-term planning and can also be used in short-term operational defense to such events. Results from our research show that all three models apparently explain the occurrence probability of higher order outages very well. However, the exponentially accelerated model fits the observed data and predicts the acceleration trends best. Strict chi-squared fitness tests were done to compare the fitness among these three models, and the test results are consistent with what we observe
Impact of Standby Transmission Components on the Reliability of Generation and Transmission Systems

Abstract:An evaluation method for considering the influence of standby transmission components on the transmission system reliability is presented.Two typical cases for analyzing the standby transmission components are considered.For the cases that the system network structure is not changed by the switching of standby components,a seven-state reliability model considering the switching time of standby components is presented.For the cases that the system network structure is changed by the switching of standby components,the compensation method is used to simulate the influence of the standby components＇ switching on the system grid.Sequential Monte Carlo simulation is used to simulate systems with standby components.The practical calculation example shows that the system reliability is improved to a certain degree,and the average deviation of system reliability indicator,i.e.expected energy not supplied（EENS）,is reduced.While using the method presented,the evaluation results of the system reliability is closer to the actual situation,and the weak links of the system can be found more accurately,thus provide an important reference to the operation and planning of power systems.

Abstract:There exist uncertain factors in power systems , and the development of the smart grid has brought about more uncertainties to power systems . The traditional transmission network planning methods are not adapted to transmission system planning in the new situation . In order to make planning schemes adaptable to the effects of uncertainties , uncertainty theories have been introduced into transmission network planning with success . From the perspective of random theory , fuzzy set theory , credibility theory and whatnot the domestic and international achievements in modeling methods of uncertainties and uncertainty theories based transmission system planning approaches are reviewed . In terms of fast calculation for evaluation indices , processing methods for uncertainties and so forth , problems to be noticed and suggestions for future research on the uncertainty theory based transmission network planning are put forward .

Abstract:A novel comprehensive price method for a transmission system is presented. The proposed price is composed of two components. One is power price component; the other is energy price component. Both of them are solved with a unified operation simulation model. This method not only can offer the correct economical incentives for transmission system operation and expansion, but also has advantages in computational efficiency. A simple example is given to demonstrate the validity of proposed method.

Abstract:This paper examines the differences of power systems between China and the United States from the perspective of transmission management, and finally summarizes the institutional advantages of China’s power system reform. The research shows that there are significant operation and supervision differences between China and the United States in transmission management. China has always maintained a unified management in transmission management, while the United States has adopted a decentralized management model in transmission. The implementation of centralized unified management in transmission links cannot only ensure the timely and effective allocation of national power energy, but also be helpful to concentrate all kinds of resources to develop large-scale power projects.

Abstract:The paper proposes a probabilistic network-flow model in evaluating reliability of electric power transmission systems. The model enables us to thoroughly dissect the structure of power networks, distinguish the elements whose failure can cause cascade outages, and obtain probability to satisfy demands. The examples illustrate the usefulness in analyzing reliability of interconnected power systems. It can be used in both planning and operation security assessments. The shortcomings of the proposed model and future studies along this direction are also discussed.

Abstract:For the problem that the throughput is improved in the scene of the MUE (Multi-mode Users Equipment) Parallel transmitting high speed downlink service, but also brings a substantial increase in energy consumption. This paper proposes a multi network parallel transmission model, which through the analysis of the current research on multi network parallel transmission of energy saving ideas, defines two core contents of the energy efficiency model for parallel transmission of heterogeneous networks: optimal transmission rate allocation and network ranking and access decision rules. The specific idea is to make the ranking of all access network based on network resources in heterogeneous network. And according to the MUE service transmission requirements to decide which network needs to be selected for parallel transmission. Then getting the optimal allocation transmission rate of each bearing network, and the selected network provides downstream services for MUE according to the allocated rate to reduce energy consumption. Finally, the effectiveness of the improved model is verified by Matlab simulation analysis.

Abstract:By use of the concept of operational reliability and evaluation theory, a component’s reliability model based on real-time operating condition is built, in which the impacts of units’ operating mode, real-time fluctuation of power load and variation of power network structure on operational reliability are comprehensively considered. On this basis the modeling principle for component’s real-time reliability is proposed, the hyperbolic function model of transmission line is given, the impacts of the parameter variation of real-time reliability model of transmission line, such as probability statistics of transmission line outage, power flow off-limit threshold of transmission line, rated capacity of transmission line and so on, on evaluation results as well as on the model itself are analyzed in detail, furthermore, the method to choose the parameters of practical real-time reliability model of transmission line is put forward.

Abstract:The reliability assessment based on connection point analysis is proposed to more comprehensively estimate the reliability level of transmission system.The definition of connection point and its identification,as well as the assessment index system of transmission system and its calculation formulas,are introduced.It collects the outage information of connection points in the system and calculates the related statistical indices to reflect the power supply capability transmission system.The momentary outage is considered and the trend of reliability change is reflected by the tendency index.Its effectiveness and practicability are verified by case study,which shows the influence of system structure on system reliability in the comparison of reliability condition between different transmission systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a probabilistic modeling method for interconnected power systems based on the equivalent energy function approach. The proposed method rigorously treats probabilistic properties of unit residual capacities and the transmission capacities, and provides more accurate simulation of the energy exchange processes between two interconnected power system. The numerical examples given in the paper illustrate high accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
