Abstract:The debate on the "concept of drama" in the New Period was carried out in the context of dramatic crisis.In the debate,the direction of the development of Chinese spoken drama was discussed,which helped widen the realism in the New Period,the trial of experimental drama and the emergence of a new dramatic performing system.On the other hand,the debate concluded that virtuality is the nature of drama,which deviates from the human nature of drama,resulted in the over-reforming of dramatic form,and inevitably left serious problems for the future development of drama.

Abstract:The New Period saw the rejuvenation of Chinese literature and art in the 20th century.In this period,Chinese drama was more open to foreign influence,totally different from absolute isolation typical in the period of Cultural Revolution.As a result,a new trend in drama creation was triggered.This trend can be exhibited by disputes in drama conception,the rise of new acting systems,the deepening of realism,the quest of modernism,confluence of problem play with unfreezing trends and the innovation of impressionistic play.

Abstract:The development of Chinese post-modern drama in 1990’s has revealed the young generation dramatists to be with an experimental gesture of rebellion and innovation. As a fundamental tendency, the young generation prefer the deconstruction of tradition and the rebellion of classics at the beginning of the 1990’s, As for the second half of the 1990’s, they mainly take the route of the mass culture and the left-wing politics. No doubt, Chinese post-modern drama actually enriches the probabilities of Chinese theatre art on one hand, but on the other hand, the urgent task for Chinese post-modern drama is to construct theatre aesthetics on the foundation of modernity from the point of view of “human theatre”.

Abstract:The 4th Shanghai International Drama Show 2007 is a festival for the small public,a festival of the tribe,symbolizing a kind of ritual experiment in drama.Plays by Richard Schechner:Hamlet:That's the Question,Educating the Wild,Two Woodsmen at Games,Yuan Ming Yuan(Gardens of Perfect Brightness),Rebounding of the Stock Market,The Scene of Daily Life at Qingming all serve as a kind of ritual.This article discusses their esthetic meaning from the perspectives of sex and identity,narration and mask.This drama show took place in such theaters as the small theater in Shanghai Drama Institute,New Space,Black Box,theater at Lianhua Road campus,Children Arts School's Flagger Theater,theater at the Drama Center.These theaters are all located in Huashan Road and Anfu Road,otherwise known as theater streets or drama space,or 'the space for the other' as Foucault put it.This article gives an interpretation of such space in view of space and city,space and stage.

Abstract:This article investigates two recent modern kunqu productions, Dang Nian Mei Lang [The Young Mei Lanfang] and Qu Qiubai (its title is the name of its protagonist), both produced by Jiangsu Kunqu Theatre House. Despite the obstacles faced by kunqu during its process of modernization, these two productions have accomplished a number of aesthetic breakthroughs: a unique form of fictional realism on the stage; its implicit use of conventionalization (that is, conventional, classical kunqu modes and their attendant aesthetic outlook); and the incorporation of recognizably up-to-date modern elements (‘fashion’) in the stage work. Meanwhile, these impressive aesthetic innovations signal, as well as facilitate, kunqu’s re-entry into the landscape of contemporary Chinese theatre as a forceful agent of cultural intervention.

Abstract:It has long been recognized that there is a particularly close relationship between art and politics in post-1949 China. And indeed this is true. The relationship, however, has usually been viewed only in “macro” terms, as one in which the Party – or the Party through its agents – stifles dissent and makes demands on writers and artists for works reflecting “the Party line”. As a general description of course there may be more than a grain of truth in this, but put in this way nothing could be less interesting. A more complex and dialectical picture emerges when one focuses more sharply on the process of artistic production in its immediate social context. The study of village-level drama and song-and-dance is ideal for this kind of investigation, in spite of the fact that it is “mere propaganda”: not only does it allow us a closer look at the actual implementation and effects of cultural policy, rather than just policy formulation, but often evidence is sufficient for us to discern salient features of the local cultural context and the ways in which artistic form and content have been adapted to specific local issues and local personalities. At this level in Chinese society, where relationships between cadres, artists and their audiences are personalized and the deeds of local labour heroes re-enacted on stage, the distinction between art and reality is not all that clear, stage action mimics political action, and vice versa, and the roles of the Party cadre and stage director are intertwined.

Abstract:Factualism and moralization characterize drama in Qing Dynasty,especially in chronicle play,current play and autobiographic play.It is influenced mainly by the thoughts of practical utility and textual criticism as well as Qing Dynasty scholars' opinion about the drama's nature.The characteristic makes the drama in Qing Dynasty have the function of preserving the history,and enhances the drama's status and aesthetic quality.

Abstract:Spoken drama in Taiwan took its turn from traditional realism to modernism in late 1960s and in 1970s. In order to vividly reveal life and people in the real world, and to inject more vitality to the declining spoken drama in Taiwan, the dramatists represented by Yao Yiwei, innovatively incorporated some elements in western modernism drama into the traditional operas of China, which eventually promoted the development of Chinese spoken drama.

Abstract:Mao Qiling is in the period of transition from late Ming Dynasty to early Qing Dynasty.His drama thought showed some character of Ming opera drama view which highly thought affection,as well as reflected the late Ming scribes' romantic self-admiring attitude.At the same time,his drama views reflected the Qing Dynasty drama view which highly stressed the importance of ethical education,and attached importance to drama because it made benefit to the world of traditional Confucianism.Meanwhile he highly confirmed that the Yuan drama was one generation's article,which was the harbinger of Jiao Xun opera view about each generation has its' wins and Wang Guowei's view about each generation has its own literature.Accordingly,his views on drama,on literature and academic have some isomorphism;each of them was both of the succession of the thought of Ming Dynasty and the pioneer of the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract:The drama idea passed a series of changes from late Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Drama idea in late Ming Dynasty was affected by Wang Yangming＇ s philosophy, and strong stressed ＂affection＂; at the beginning of Qing Dynasty, along with the rise of the Song and Ming Nero Confucianism, ideas on drama was also in the period of transition by ＂affection＂ to ＂reason＂ ; in QianLong and JiaQing era, advocating the ＂reason＂ with the essence of ＂loyalty, filial piety, chastity and righteousness＂ became the highest thrust of drama creation and criticism ; at the same time, along with the propriety of ritual research, ideas on drama ac- cordingly emphasized ritual ＇ s regulating function on the ＂ affection＂. The slow change of drama ideas from late Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty fully shows the trend that the ideas on drama and academic thoughts parallel.

Abstract:In the late twenties and early thirties of the twentieth century, when he ran the Guangdong Theatre Institute, Ouyang Yuqian promoted a “ Plebian Drama", which was comprised of the “Revolutionary Drama" and the “Artistic Drama". The central thesis of the movement was that only liberated art is pure art". It was under the guidance of this basic tenet that Ouyang Yuqian made achievements in both theory and practice, finding a path of his own in the development of Chinese modern drama.

Abstract:Li Dou's drama Qi Shuan Ji was born out of Zhang Zhupo's Ku Xiao doctrine.His purpose was to preset the story on the stage.The two scenes Twenty-four Jie and Eighteen Gun perform the sex story with songs and dance.Stylizing treatment of story because the drama has a close relationship with Wei Changsheng's performance.It had profound effect to the development of the drama,telling and singing arts in the reign of Jiaqing and Daoguang.

Abstract:The dance drama "The Wave that Never Dies" is co-created by Han Zhen and Zhou Lia. It is adapted from the true story of Li Bai, an underground radio broadcaster of the Communist Party of China. The drama reproduces the revolutionary hero who sacrificed his life for the cause of national liberation through the highly condensed narrative of the dance drama, the aesthetic image expression and the flexible and freehand stage background. This article aims to explore the artistic image shaping, main body presentation and aesthetic function in dance drama, and reveal the unique effect brought by the fusion of revolutionary spirit and contemporary aesthetic.

Abstract:One of the major legacies of the May Fourth Movement (1919) is the literature produced at the time, and within that canon the emergence of huaju (spoken drama) occupies an important position. As China's most prominent playwright of the twentieth century, Cao Yu published important plays, most notably Thunderstorm, Sunrise, and Peking Man, which feature some of spoken drama's most successful female characters. In light of the theory of literary event, this article intends to analyze those female protagonists with reference to Nora's departure, and to explore the power of social criticism embodied in their struggles to win freedom and independence. As young female intellectuals, these women undergo difficult experiences and end up with different endings. Reconsidered as pieces of political commentary, Cao Yu's plays reflect the legacy of the May Fourth Movement, that is, the idea that literature is an event that has power to act and intervene into reality.

Abstract:At the beginning of Ming,in order to establish principle of government and prevent the corruption of officials,the government unveils a series of drama-forbidden policy aiming at scholar-bureaucrat.This is a process from absolute strictness in early Ming to cease to be binding in mid and late Ming Dynasty.In early Ming,the government wants to build a ruling with Confucius image to draw the scholars,aiming at straight local administration and guides thrifty.These are the important reasons for unveiling the drama-forbidden policy.The policy itself does not forbid the dramatic event among the scholars.Playwriting is still held a place of mark in literature;the fashion of performance in court influences the scholars;and emperor's hobby of drama all lead the policy become lax.The drama-forbidden policy has a dominant effect on the scholars'drama actions.The thoughts of drama instruction is an important foundation for the theory of drama in Ming Dynasty.

Abstract:This essay offers strategies that can lead students to engage with Gao Xingjian and his plays of the 1980s through an analytical and creative learning experience. Student project design focuses on three plays that were publicly staged in China during the 1980s: Alarm Signal, The Bus Stop, and Wild Man. Reflecting on the challenges inherent in approaching Gao’s plays, I argue that students in North America require a pedagogy that foregrounds Gao’s conceptualization of theatre as an actor-centered, instead of script-centered, performing art. The essay concludes that leading students to a deeper understanding of how Gao composed “performance texts” – rather than “texts to be voiced” – is critical to their understanding of these plays as a key link in the chain of China’s drama and theatre history.
