Abstract:Euphemism is a traditional figure of speech both in Chinese and English.As previous studies of euphemism are mainly concerned with its linguistic and semantic features or its functional classifications,this paper aims to make a cross-cultural analysis of the similarities and differences between Chinese and English euphemisms.On the basis of the different religious beliefs between Chinese and English people and their similar politeness principles,this paper analyses the different and similar features of some euphemisms used in Chinese and English and the relevant cultural orientations reflected in such uses.

Abstract:There are significant differences between Chinese and Western cultures, particularly in terms of communication styles. Westerners tend to be more direct in their way of speaking, often expressing their intentions in a straightforward manner. In contrast, Chinese people, influenced by their traditional culture, tend to speak in a more indirect and roundabout way. They are accustomed to expressing their ideas and purposes in a euphemistic manner. Chinese speakers typically begin with a prelude, using indirect language to convey their true intentions. They then gradually transition to the main topic, unraveling the mystery step by step. This roundabout way of speaking is why euphemisms are commonly used in Chinese communication. The use of euphemisms is preferred by people from various backgrounds for several reasons. Euphemisms allow individuals to avoid the bluntness of direct expression, creating a more comforting atmosphere for communication. They also take into consideration the feelings and emotions of the listener, maintaining the dignity of all parties involved in the conversation. Furthermore, the use of euphemisms contributes to enhancing the quality and efficiency of communication. By exploring the pragmatic function of euphemisms, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the underlying meanings behind the words. This understanding allows for the mastery of appropriate communication skills and facilitates effective communication. In this article, the author will analyze the pragmatic meaning of euphemisms from three perspectives: the avoidance function, the politeness function, and the concealment function. This analysis will be supplemented with specific cases to reveal the pragmatic significance of euphemisms and enhance the readers’ comprehension of their usage.

Abstract:There are many lexical studies on euphemisms and general studies, and there is currently a lack of research on euphemisms in context. There is a lack of relevant articles based on euphemisms for chronological studies. This article examines English euphemisms through chronological comparisons and focuses on the influence of different cultures of different generations on euphemisms. The article explains the fundamental logic of the change and development of euphemisms. The culture of Western countries emphasizes personality development, while Chinese culture emphasizes restraint. Under the influence of Western cultures, Western euphemisms are relatively simple and mostly used to express politeness. It is relatively complex and emphasizes the human understanding that Chinese culture influences Chinese euphemisms. Along with the Europeanization of Chinese, Chinese euphemisms have also been influenced to some extent by English euphemisms. However, as time passed, Chinese and English euphemisms developed in a more concise direction, but both languages retained the polite function of euphemisms. Euphemisms are meant to show politeness and avoid conflict. Therefore, it is important to use the right euphemisms in intercultural communication and inter-age communication.

Euphemism, which comes from the worship and awe of the supernatural power, has been deeply rooted in the social life, and deeply reflects the social and cultural values of a country. To a large extent, the use of euphemism depends on context. As a mass media, news reports provide us with a lot of information, covering all parts of the world, involving various fields, and deeply affect people's lives. The language of news report has the characteristics of accuracy, simplicity, authenticity and timeliness. In addition, the news media as a communication tool, but also has the characteristics of publicity, publicity and so on. Due to the vagueness and indirect features of euphemism, euphemism plays a special and important role in the news reports. The main function of euphemism is to protect the face from the author and the reader from all kinds of offensive, and ultimately safeguard the interests of politicians and the government. Specifically, these offensive terms include taboo words or topics that are more sensitive to both parties, such as political or social issues.
